No fuss groomer in Pleasanton - we take our spaniel to him every few weeks for a trim. Our Cavalier King Charles spaniel is a sweet dog and perfect in every regard, except she has a knack for growing fur! Which becomes an issue when the weather gets warm, especially as she also tends to shed a lot when that happens. Fortunately, we have Michael at Shear Magic in our corner - he usually can take her at a couple of days notice, and his fees are reasonable ($70 including brushing of teeth). We drop our dog off between 10 and 11 am and pick her up around 5 pm, lighter and a lot happier (especially when Michael gives her a treat as she leaves with us). On May 24, 2025, around noon while passing Shear Magic during my son's music lesson nearby, I heard a dog yelp loudly through the open door, followed by whimpering for about five minutes. It sounded like the dog was in distress, which was really concerning and made me decide not to bring my dog here for grooming. I didn't see what happened inside, so it could have been a one-off incident, but the prolonged whimpering worried me. I'd recommend pet owners ask about their grooming practices and how they handle sensitive dogs before booking. The place seems to have a good reputation, but this experience gave me pause. read more

Honestly they deserve hazard pay for taking on my rather aggressive Pomeranian. That growls and snaps. They did a great job with a dog that seems to be part dire wolf. Lovely owners, great place. We have been taking both of our Standard Golden Doodle and Medium Labradoodle to Mike at Shear Magic Grooming for the past 8 years or so. I had been to at least nine or ten groomers in the tri-valley area and was always so disappointed at how the dogs were groomed. They always came out looking like poodles or they shave them! Mike has been amazing every time we go. The best thing is, my dogs don't mind going and are always happy there. He is so kind to them and takes his time to comb them out. They always look and smell incredible and he has never once shaved them but takes his time to make sure every tangle is out. He is also very reasonably priced. read more

I have a 17 yr-old chiweenie who is sensitive to "pawdicures" after a previous one resulted in a severe nerve & spinal injury, but he has to get them every 2 wks or he can't walk correctly, which only exacerbates the hip & spine pain for him (poor little guy). This brings us to Shear Magic... Michael was welcoming, kind, courteous, and downright angelic in his care of my little furbaby, Frank. He had me set him on the table, and before he had finished asking about our day, we was DONE! Zero resisting out of Frank, zero injury, zero muzzling, zero problems! Michael and Frank had an immediate bond. It was as if Michael just emits a "this is a safe space, I'm a dog-lover" energy. we're headed back today for our 2nd visit and couldn't be more thrilled. People are so quick to criticize a less-than-perfect experience, but hesitant to show praise or give credit where it's due, which is a shame, because then others miss out on outstanding service options such as this! Overall we were fairly pleased with the grooming of our pup. We were charged $55 for bath, groom, nail clipping (And I think teeth brushing I can't remember) for our 25 lb. pooch. As others have pointed out sometimes your dog will be kenneled for a long time depending on how busy they are. Our dog is fairly comfortable in a kennel so this wasn't a big deal to us. Our only concern is that it seemed like they trimmed his nails a little short. Our dog was a little uncomfortable with one nail in particular but after a few days he was fine. read more

I have used Shear Magic twice now: the first time for a very initial conservative trimming and the second for a major shearing. Both times, I was able to get Boda in right away. Michael has a great rapport with the dogs and seems to specialized in over over-the-top-cute dogs. He is priced lower than other groomers, too. I recommend him. Boda looks great and is a happy dog. I have been bringing my Chow Chow here for over a year and a half now and it is always a pleasure dealing with Cinda and Michael. Originally trying to find a groomer who actually works on Chows was quite difficult but luckily I found Shear Magic and I couldn't ask for better. I feel bad making a review on Yelp without contacting the business owner first but the grooming was so bad. We have a labradoodle. No one had groomed her face because they explained they were busy that day and short staffed. They offered to do it if we waited but we did not have time. Unfortunately when he got her home we notice no one had trimmed under the floppy ears and there was bad matting. I had to cut them out myself over several evenings. Labradoodles have an under-coat which must be "stripped" to rid matting. It doesn't appear that the staff knew this although doodles and poodles are often owned. We tried them out but will go back to our regular groomer which is expensive but so worth it. read more

We took our Shichon 'Coco' for her first 'Doggie Spa' treatment, and Michael could not have been kinder or more professional. He was able to fit her into a tight schedule but finished exactly when he said he would be done. Just an absolutely fabulous job, and Coco looked and felt like a 'new dog'. We've been taking our Shih Tzu there for many years. Michael always takes great care of him and our dog trusts him and is never traumatized or shaking when we pick him up as he has been with other groomers. They have always done exactly what we have asked for, from a shave down to a puppy cut to leaving him long and their products are mild and don't irritate his skin as many do. I've seen some poor reviews but have to say that we've come to Shear Magic since our dog was a year old and he's now 13 and have never had a problem. We've been going to Shear Magic for 11 years. Our dog is perfectly groomed and loves to go. He wags his tail and understands the routine and goes right to his cage. WOW! My review is honest & was mysteriously "filtered" while my other reviews remained. Yelp has lost a lot of credibility with me! When Cinda was running this place it was excellent, but now her husband has taken over and the quality has truly fallen! Cinda, you need to get back and straighten up the business you built! There seems to be a huge turn over in the groomers. The last time we had our dog groomed there will be the last and I have being using this groomer for at least 15 years. The five star rating on Yelp is questionable, because all of the one star reviews (SEVEN) have been filtered out. Now, I know to always read these filtered reviews and not trust the ratings. Hopefully my review won't be filtered (check out the one star reviews that have been filtered)! Who has the ability to filter these reviews? Our dog was groomed in late June and she looks horrible! She was trimmed unevenly and started licking her fur the evening she returned. I don't know whether she picked up some sort of skin condition, but I have an appointment tomorrow at the vet. Five starts is NOT enough! The following review is from 2008: I can't tell you how wonderful this groomer is. I've been taking my dog here for over four years. I work in Pleasanton and live in San Jose. I'd tried several groomers in San Jose but his coat kept getting his white film over it or he seemed distressed when I picked him up (and he's pretty easy going) or things weren't done (like his toenails) or his skin was all pink and itchy. I took a lunch hour to drive by the two groomers near work here in Pleasanton. I stopped by the groomer near main street (I can't find them on line now...I guess maybe they went out of business...no great loss if you ask me). They cages were in disrepair, dirty, and rusty. The place was dirty. The groomer told me that she only worked until noon. Ooo-kay... I stopped by Shear Magic and they were closed on Mondays. I looked through the windows and it looked very professional. I could see the washing room and the doggie condo room (where the kennels were). There were kennels in the main room and a table grooming station. It looked cute. Next day I phoned and talked with the owner Cinda. I explained my past experiences and asked about how the dogs are placed in the baths (my dog has a bad knee). She was very professional and answered all my questions satisfactorily. On the plus side, when I said that his coat had a white film on it, she immediately said "They are not rinsing him, smell his coat. It will smell soapy". I made an appointment for the woof. Later that night I smelled his coat...it *did* smell soapy - just like a shampoo bottle. When Saxon went in for his appointment we did an intake card and she came out and met Saxon. When I picked him up, the price was reasonable. He was VERY happy and in good spirits. He looked great...but I was suspicious...he always looks great at first... At home I went over that poor dog with a fine toothed comb. He looked great! She did such a great job! I called the next day and let her know how happy I was. Saxon has been going there for 4 years now. He always looks great and I know he is treated well. I even started shaving him for the summer (I would never trust anyone else to do this). A shaved German Shepherd looks VERY silly...but is a lot more comfortable! You won't go wrong with Shear Magic. She and her husband now run the shop and they are both fantastic. If I ever stop working in Pleasanton, I'm going to bring him all the way up here for grooming - it's worth the drive. Tell her Saxon sent you! UPDATE - February 2011: I stopped working in Pleasanton May of last year (2010)...and I am still going up to Pleasanton from San Jose to see Cinda and Michael. They are so good and careful! My 13 year old German Shepherd has a bum knee and slips easily. They support his hind quarters when walking across the floor. They lift him into the tub. They really give TLC and care about their 4-legged clients. It's worth waiting the day in Pleasanton for him have a spa day with Cinda and Michael. I've been going to Shear Magic since 2003...and will continue to do so! read more

I took my little year and a half cava poo to get groomed. I brought him in at 10 AM and was told he'd be done around three, at 3:30 I called and apparently he'd been done for a while and no one called me. He seemed very frightened when we got home and he had about a 3 inch in diameter razor burn, the skin was taken off on his chest and on his leg He had about a four or 5 inch razor burn where the skin was shaved off as well. I was so upset I didn't know what to do for him. he kept licking and crying. I will never go back there. They sprayed some dog cologne that was strong for three days. When I called about the burns I was told to put Neosporin on it. I was never told about the razor burns when I left, also his haircut was an even I had to fix it at home. I could write more but I'm just too upset I will never go back there again I see there are a lot of good reviews so I'm happy that people are happy with their cuts but personally I will never go back I had to put a collar on him and kept applying Neosporin so he wouldn't lick. Poor little thing did not eat for a day and a half and when he got home he drank almost a whole bowl of water which makes me think he was not given any water. He also Peed for a very long time when he first came home so I don't think he was taken out to do his business. Poor little thing he was so traumatized as was I. read more

We had taken Suki for grooming here at least 5 times. Every single time, her cut was always different, and she was always anxious to get out of there. I suppose that is how all dogs feel about their groomers. BUT - the last time I took her there, I was told to drop her off between 8-9am, and that she would be ready by 5pm. I dropped Suki off at 8 on my way to work. When I returned at 5, they told me they hadn't started on her because they were so busy. Poor Suki - she was stuck in her crate all.day.long! I came back an hour later, and was shocked to see how short her hair was. She was just NOT herself. I intuitively knew something was wrong. And immediately upon arriving home, I found that she had tiny cuts on her ears, near the tail area, and she was itching, itching, itching like crazy. So bad for a week - that we had to take her to the vet. Turns out her skin had a reaction to the razor and/or the type of shampoo they used. I had to pay $110 for vet bill/special shampoo. I just do not feel that this place is well-run and that they care all that much about their four-legged customers. I now take Suki to Paws About Town - I LOVE that place! I moved to the area from the peninsula a couple years ago and had 3 previous groomers plus tried another tri-valley groomer before finding this place when the other one stopped offering services. My dogs had a few random bad experiences with an old groomer, and since then they haven't been fans of the process. No matter who what where they don't like it. I read the reviews of this place and although there were a few negative ones, it was worth trying. I know there isn't a perfect spot. I told the guy who basically runs it my expectations. My dogs are over 12 year old standard poodles. They are old and high maintenance. They need a lot of tlc and time to get through one of their least favorite activities. This is the last groomer I will use. We are in it for the long haul. Every experience has been great. If they run late, they call and always try to work with my schedule. They don't rush and do a lousy job. My dogs are safe. They always always always turn out awesome which isn't easy considering the breed. My dogs are my life. Don't avoid this place based on a few shmucks that were unrealistic and single minded. This place has been an incredible find! read more

I have been coming to Shear Magic for 15 years now. Michael took great care of my Mr. Bruce for 13 years and did such a great job on giving an Airedale Terrier a true Airedale cut, not a modified Schnauzer cut. Bruce would bounce in always so happy to be at Shear Magic and to see Michael. One of the things that impressed me the most was that they could provide tarter scraping on the teeth, don't need to sedate and they do such a great and gentle job. Now Michael takes care of my Fionn McCool and Irish Setter who gets shown regularly. Fionn is always happy to go in and they do such a fabulous job of bathing and combing out his coat which is kept log for showing. I can't tell you how wonderful Michael and the Shear Magic team are. I have recommended them with out reserve to a number of people who have also been so pleased with the results! I also have boarded my dogs with Michael and Cinda and they are fabulous and my dog always comes back happy and clean to top it off. I am really disappointed that this appointment did not go well. It's so close to home that I really wanted it to. Brought my maltipoo, Daisy, in for a grooming. When I first walked in, the guy had a massive hole in his shirt and the girl there with him looked like a meth addict. I was not going to judge though...I didn't care what they look like as long as they can groom. But then they kept her for 7 hours and when I finally picked her up, the guy was complaining about how scared she was. I warned him that she is timid with strangers when I dropped her off but he made the following insensitive comments anyway: "Wow, she is scared of everything isn't she?" And "She doesn't like anything," and "she doesn't even like to be touched!" I told him "She loves us and all her family and friends. You just have to earn her trust." But he just shook his head and kept repeating his rude comments. He may not like a shy dog but surely he knows better than to talk to the owners that way?! Guess not. What a jerk. As a teacher, I would NEVER talk about my students to their parents that way. This guy doesn't care about his clientele at all. Definitely don't recommend. Oh and when I first walked in, he was complaining to someone else about Spanish speakers working in America. It irked me but I let it go. Should have trusted my instincts. Aside from the guy being so rude, Daisy's haircut was not very good at. The hair on her head was butchered and I'm pretty sure they didn't grind her nails like I asked. read more
