I had a bad haircut and color job at the first place I went to in Ithaca when I first moved here a few months ago from out of state. I waited a couple of months for the bad dye job to grow out and then made an appointment with the owner of Shear Style, Joyce, based on good reviews online. Joyce gave me a super short, super cute pixie and figures one or two more haircuts and the bad dye job will just be a bad memory. If I could give 0 star, I will. It happened on 12\29\19. The service was very unprofessional. I went to there to pick up my girlfriend. My girlfriend bleached her roots there before but it turned out very yellow, so she went there again to get it fixed. She was not expecting to pay the full price. Yeah it has been more than 4 weeks but she did call 2 times in between to make an apppointment but scheduling did not work. Snow, final weeks of school, working 35hours a week , I mean who would put hair priority? Here are the very unprofessional parts of the salon. I did not like the fact that her hairstylist Lorraine was rushing so much because she had to go to church. She said it 5 times. She made us feel bad because she said we are stopping her when she has to feed her kids. Unprofessional again because why would she accept the customer when she knows she cannot meet the satisfaction of the customer? Again unprofessional. Second, she was raising her voice, so we felt very threatened. I had to tell her please do know raise your voice because my gf was scared. She said you are not walking out I need my money. Another African American hairsylist joined her and basically started to say that we are not responsible for each other. We are independents,so we are individuals. We never planned to walk out. I am a Veteran, so I know what is right or wrong. One thing that made me feel really upset was how the owner responsded. I was next to my gf when they talked, and she kept saying it has been more than 4weeks,we can't do anything. She did not try to fix the problem but said we cant do anything. When she was listing things that my girlfriend was charged, my girlfriend found out there were services that she not request(hair repair products) But the owner bluntly said there is nothing she can do since it was already done. What? You are the owner and how would you feel if you get charged for things that you never asked? The owner kept saying that my gf got a huge discount. We have no idea why it would cost 135 dollars when she only wanted roots done again. At the end, of course, she ended the conversation saying her client is waiting. It is just sad how unprofessional and threatened Shear salon can be when it comes to service. Do not recommend here. read more

I had an appointment for a color with Joyce M earlier this week. Prior to the color application, Joyce did a demineralization/clarifying treatment. She explained that mineral buildup interferes with color and chemical processes and causes hair to be dull, flat and damaged. I am very happy with the results! The color turned out great and my hair is shinier and has much more lift than it has had in a very long time! I am very, very pleased to learn that my hair was not dull and flat due to aging - but because of mineral buildup ... and there is a solution! Joyce- really, thank you for that! read more

I found this salon on Yelp and decided to take a chance based on the reviews. I'm so glad I did! Kelly was my stylist and did a fantastic job! She's very knowledgeable, friendly, and great personality. The reason I needed my hair cut was because last place I went the stylist cut it all uneven. I tried to have her fix it but she ended up making it worse so I said that's it, won't be going back there! This salon, I found, to be very professional, clean, and very nice decor. I liked so much that I booked my next appointment with Kelly, going to color my hair. I was so happy to find this place. I did my wedding hair with Rachel. I called in June for a late July wedding. Hair trial was only $30 before tip and the day of $55. Rachel was very responsive over email because I sent her photos. Salon location is easy to find with lots of parking space available. My husband got his hair cut there and it is was about $20 after printing a coupon off of the website. Had a great experience! read more

Highly Recommend!!! Just moved here from out of state and Shear Style was my first choice. Joyce the owner cut my hair and she did a fantastic job on it. I'm really picky when it comes to my hair because I have a longer style of hair, and Joyce nailed it! She is really super polite and so were the other employees I talked to on the phone when I called to make my appointment. They have great customer service! Joyce is really good with picture references, and she really cares about your opinion to make sure if it looks okay or not. Very accommodating, quality cuts, fairly priced... a great value. On a Saturday I reached out for a last minute haircut and the owner, Joyce, ran through everyone's schedule for the day and felt bad telling me they were all booked up. However, she volunteered to give me a call if they received any cancelations. A few hours later Joyce called to tell me that during one of her clients coloring, she could squeeze me in. What a horribly run business. I made an appointment for a blowout and when I showed up they had scheduled me for a trim. They didn't have enough time for a blowout and showed me in their calendar where whomever scheduled the appointment entered it wrong. There was no attempt to reschedule, make suggestions for the time we did have - nothing. The whole reason I made the appointment is because I have an event but they commented on the humidity being the real issue. The humidity doesn't change the fact that I had an appointment. I'm gobsmacked by the lack of empathy and sense of responsibility for the situation. Instead, I was made to feel as though it were my issue. Never again, no thank you. When I first went to her, I'd had a hard time finding a stylist who knew how to work with my naturally curly hair, and I'd had some awful haircuts. Went in for an 8" hair donation. The hair dresser did not measure the length of the ponytail before cutting and ended up cutting off 11". After this she spent about 5 minutes adding a few layers to my hair. She did not check to make sure the lengths were the same on each side of my head. Very disappointed. read more

I'm super late to reviewing this place, as my haircut was back in April, but I thought they were awesome! Joyce did my hair, for the record. I came in with just-past-shoulder length, heavily damaged hair and basically said "what can you do to help me?". I ended up with a beautiful, layered, a-line bob, exactly what I'd wanted, and Joyce was incredibly careful to remove as much of the un-repairable ends as she could! I came for a haircut; my hair was way too long (for me)! Rachel was really attentive, looked at the picture I showed her, and did well at making it the same style (side part with layers) and couple inches longer than the picture (which is exactly what I wanted). My hair looks great, it didn't take very long, and it wasn't pricy ($30 pre-tip)- basically, things went perfectly! Plus it was nice to have my hair cut in a little sectioned-off room/area, rather than to be on one of a lineup of chairs- it made it feel more personal. Definitely recommended. read more

I have to admit. The origonal problem was my own. I tried to bleach my own dark hair and go blond by myself. I called up Shear Style in hopes that they could save me. I went in and saw a stylish, who I don't want to name. But basically she tried really hard to help me. She was very understanding that I wanted to go blond and tried to help me get to that point. She did an all over color to cover the green that had shown up in my hair. I loved it! But after two days it had faded out and the green came back! So I went back and saw the same stylist and she ended up putting something in my hair called "quickies". These sticky little hair extensions. She charged me 10 dollars to put two pieces in to cover up the green, because she didn't want to dye my already damaged hair again. I got home and took a shower to help blend the new pieces into my hair. They immediately fell out!! I was infuriated. But then I thought that maybe I wasn't supposed to shower so soon after having them stuck to my head. As they were just an adhesive. So I called and spoke to the same stylist and asked if there was a certain amount of time to wait before showering, and she said no. That anytime is fine. And then I told her what happened. Her entire tone changed. And she got pissed. She started freaking out that it was a waste of product and that that should not have happened. I was taken aback and apologized, that it might be my fault. And she said she could order more and put them in. But I declined and asked if I could get my money back. She said yes but that I would have to wait until tomorrow. But she was totally rude about the whole thing. In conclusion... I won't be going back. read more

It's usually hard for Asians with super straight hair to get a nice haircut in America with a reasonable price like this. I'm very satisfied with Shear Style compared to my previous experiences. I had my hair done here numerous times and each time it came out uneven. The hair stylist Lorraine, rushed my service, not telling me ahead of time she had a prior church engagement, so I had to leave with wet hair in freezing weather. I felt bad saying anything because she was making me feel guilty by repeatedly mentioning that she is serving kids who are hungry. I am also broke, but paying money I work hard for to have my hair done for my birthday. I feel like if I am paying such a large sum of money, I should recieve the same service as others and should'nt have to feel bad about her church plans I didn't know about beforehand. My hair was left with 3 drastic different colors: yellow, silver, and bonde at the ends. I wasn't able to get a refund or any price reduction for getting my hair redone either because it had been some time since I came in again, but it was due to the fact I didn't have the money, school, my job, and I did call a few times, but they always said they didn't have time to dye hair that day so weeks went by. Afterwards, a huge conflict arose because I asked for a discount. I would normally never ask for one, but each time I had gotten my hair done here, the same yellow color was left in my hair. She was raising her voice, and again, brought up hungry children so I would feel bad and pay without continuing to complain. I wouldn't recommend ever going here for blonde hair. Maybe something simple, or a haircut, but blonde seems to be too complex for this salon. read more

I've come here three times over the years to get my hair colored, each time with a different stylist. The first two times were excellent and my first two stylists were amazing and kind, which is why I'm rating it two stars instead of one. However, the last time I was there will unfortunately be the last time I ever go. This salon is great for many things, but apparently "blonde" is not one of them (or the stylist I worked with was just not that experienced in this area). My natural hair color is already fairly blonde but I decided I wanted to get an even lighter shade just for fun since it's something I had never done before. I trusted them since they had done such a great job with my other colors (not natural ones) and so I didn't protest at all during the session, thinking it would eventually turn out good-- but so many things went wrong during this session. First of all, my stylist seemed to shut down my ideas of what I wanted. I showed her a picture and she had a very hesitant tone about achieving this color, even though it was only a little bit lighter than my natural color. Of course, I'm not a hair stylist myself so I wanted an expert's opinion, but her attitude was not helpful at all in trying to work with me. Secondly-- I didn't even realize how bad this next thing was until after telling this story to other hair stylists-- she told me the bleach would burn and itch but "beauty is pain"; it did burn and itch the entire time, which I now realize was probably a chemical burn (I've had my hair bleached since this time and it didn't burn at all). Again, I just went with it because I trusted she knew what she was doing. But apparently this is not normal at all and is actually really dangerous. Thirdly, when she was all done with the procedure, it looked incredibly brassy and orange. She told me she could "try and make it lighter" but it would cost me more, which I couldn't afford since it was already almost $200. I left, cried a bunch, and had my friend fix it at home with $20 toner. In short, I wasted so much money on a terrible looking color while experiencing unnecessary physical pain. If you're looking to go blonde/blonder, I would steer clear of this salon. read more
