If you choose upgraded seating your name is on the chair. Tickets are reasonably priced and are easy to obtain. The management is special. Seems this is an organization that took an old movie and vaudeville theatre and redid it. The owner meets and greats and it is a special touch. Asks if you enjoyed the program as you leave. Nice. The seats are comfortable, and the sound system is great. They sell sodas and popcorn and other treats just like the old show would have done. Parking is not a problem, getting there from Indpls is not a problem, about 20 minutes from 465 east. Looking forward to another presentation that catches "our fancy."

Have you ever driven by a vacant building and found yourself fantasizing about all the…read morepossibilities? You think to yourself "What if?" It kind of seems like that's what's happened with Shelbyville's Christi's Off-Broadway Theatre, a former church turned small regional theater that serves as performance space, event space, stand-up comedy host, and host for Christi's School for the Arts. While Christi's may lack the pizzazz of the nearby Strand Theatre, it's the sort of place that you look at and you immediately understand why someone was tempted to pick it up off the market and try to turn it into something special. In this case, owner Tina Frankl has, indeed, guided it toward a small but special place in the community of Shelbyville and this small theatre, seating is right about 120, is quite the delight. The only reason I'm knocking off a star, which I have to do out of a sense of integrity, is due to the fact that as an old church turned theatre there's no question that accessibility is a bit of a concern here. Parking is generally to be found either in a small parking lot about a block away or along the street. As this is a smaller city, parking is free with no meters to worry about. The Christi's website does note not to use the lot behind the building, which appears to go with it but apparently belongs to someone else who doesn't respond well to its use. While there's a lack of truly "accessible" parking, it's worth noting that Shelbyville is a fairly quiet city and it's not really difficult to find manageable parking. Curb cuts do exist along the sidewalks, though with some degree of disrepair. The front entrance into Christi's is not wheelchair friendly - there's several steps into the building. There is, however, a wooden ramp along the side of the theatre that gives you access via a backstage wing. The ramp itself isn't ADA compliant, though it's rather workable. This might be a ramp best tackled with the assistance of a companion. Seating is old auditorium style. There's a back row that leaves plenty of room for wheelchairs. If comfort is your thing, just be aware that the seats are somewhat old school. I found it rather adorable, but if you need extra cushioning I'd suggest you bring it. The stage itself is also not accessible, though I didn't check if you could access the stage from the back. I'm not sure how old this building is, but it's definitely well before ADA was even a thought. In all likelihood, I think Central State was still a popular option when this building was created. So, accessibility is a concern. Realistically, there goes one star. However, the rest of the experience is an absolute delight. Those who work the theatre are warm, friendly, accommodating, and quite hospitable. The theatre itself is warm and intimate enough that you don't really have a bad seat in the house, while the sound system is really surprisingly good. Christi's hosts a wide variety of shows - from comedy to stage plays to music events and more. They do rent the space out for special events, which is how I finally visited the place I'd long heard about, and I was quite impressed while working with them from beginning to end. There's a small marquee out front - one can't help but wish they had better signage, but better signage can come as the theatre grows. I sure hope it does. The best way to contact them is either via their website, social media, or actually at a show. Christi's is more of a passion project for those involved, most of whom have other jobs and you're not really going to reach the theatre any other way. I definitely give my Christi's experience a thumbs up. While noting accessibility concerns, this is a terrific venue and a great option for area residents seeking either local theatre experience or a place to hold a special event. I do wish I lived a bit closer, but there's simply no doubt I'll go back.

Every attention to detail was seen in the costumes, the set was awesome, the actors were flawless with beautiful voices, and a wonderful live orchestra provided the music. Good news travels fast - every show was a sellout. The venue seating is nicely tiered so there is not a bad seat in the house. Very reasonable priced refreshments are available for purchase and there is plenty of parking. Keep an eye out for the entrance sign, it's tricky to spot. I have been here 50 times over the years for various shows, including some plays that my granddaughters have been in, and have volunteered to usher. The local talent is always top notch. I went to see Little Women musical and the cast did a wonderful job. Even though I have seen the story many times I was still drawn in to the story. The actors played their parts well and left me laughing several times. I followed my GPS to take me there and once I got off the interstate I noticed a few small signs to direct me further. Make sure you pay attention to where the turn is into the Theater. There is a sign, but my GPS did want to take me a tad further on the road. The building sits alone and just looks like a warehouse. There was plenty of parking and no traffic to get there. The surroundings inside were comfortable as well. They do have a small selection of snacks if you want some thing to munch on during the performance. The seats were comfortable and they offered one intermission. The cost of the performance was $20 which was very reasonable. You can purchase your ticket online and show them your ticket electronically. When I arrived at the ticket counter they were very organized and I just had to give them my name. This was their 48th season in production and it appears like they perform Six shows in the season.
