My wife doesn't have a YELP account, so she asked me to submit this review on her behalf. As a woman of color, my wife has had a difficult time in Austin finding a salon and stylist who can do her hair correctly. Many places offer services for ethnic groups, but that doesn't mean they know how. Well, I came across Shelia Marie when doing a Google search for "best black salon". My wife has been doing the natural thing for a year or two, but she want to change things up. My wife got her hair virgin relaxed, and my mom did a partial relaxer. Shelia did a fantastic job! Both my wife and my mom left there with nothing but smiles, and feeling sexier and more confident than ever! My wife is happy to have found someone who can do her hair confidently. My wife also said it was a pleasure getting to talk with Shelia during her time there. The only negative part though: Shelia only takes cash or check. This shouldn't be a problem if you know ahead of time and just come prepared. This issue wasn't big enough of a deal to lower our rating of such an experienced stylist! I've been going to Sheila Marie for a few years now as a natural client. I don't go often because I'm normally in braids, but when I do go, she gets me in and out and does a great job with my hair. My hair is always nice when I leave and she's accommodating. HARD PASS. Ladies, please please please save yourself some time, money and grief and go somewhere else. I've been going to her for a while now (YEARS BRUH, YEARS), and wanted to hold off on writing a review, thinking things would get better, but today was finally enough. I booked my appointment online like I always do-I booked for a relaxer. There is a disclaimer when booking online that says "Cancellations with less than 24 hour notice will result in a additional $25 fee." Sure, that's fine! However, today was the day of my appointment and she apparently cancelled it without informing me, so you owe me...is that how this works?, hahaha. I was booked for 6:15 PM. I hauled ass thru traffic and made it there at 5:45 PM. Her door was closed and locked, so I waited. And waited. ANNND waited. 6:18pm rolls around and she still hasn't arrived, so I send her a text-No reply. I call and she doesn't pick up. 6:26pm I send another text with a screenshot of my appointment confirmation-No reply. I call 2 or 3 times, she doesn't pick up so I leave a voicemail. 6:38pm I send her ANOTHER text message-No reply. I call once more time before leaving. My time is valuable too. If you are sick, or something came up-that's life, that's perfectly fine, things gon' happen, but you need to let your customers know that. COMMUNICATION is the word of the day. TBH though, I was already planning on dropping this lady when she quoted me $75 for a mofo trim. A trim that I needed because she jacked up my hair the last time I needed a trim, and cut your girl all crooked (srsly, one side was 3 INCHES longer than the rest of my hair; I did not ask for some futuristic asymmetrical look). BTW Sheila, I went to a salon down the street and got a trim for $15. ONE-FIVE. And why every appointment with you last all damn day? One time I booked a relaxer at 11 AM and didn't get home until almost 4 PM. Girl, you trippin and you know this. You just lost a customer for life. Peace out with that nonsense. I'm still on the hunt for a new stylist. I'm mixed.( African, Irish, polish, and German) my hair is curly and I usually flat iron it straight. I was going to another Austin salon, but sadly the owner who was my stylist passed away. I went to another stylist there but was fed up with her being unprofessional and quite frankly rude. My hair is damaged. I wear pony tails for work. I teach young kids with special needs. I know I have some breakage, but when I go get my hair done I do not expect to feel bullied. That is unfortunately my experience with Sheila as well. I'm in my thirties and I am a grown woman. I expect to be treated the way I treat people and that is always with respect. There is a way that you can talk to customers and let them know how they can improve their hair with out being rude or talking down to them. I color my own hair since as a teacher I do not have much of a hair budget. She also put down my hair color. I know it's not perfect as I am an educator and not a hair stylist, but I normally get compliments on it. Even another stylist cam into the room and complimented my color. I would just warn if you do not have perfect hair be prepared for her to pick on you and make you feel bad about your hair. I am a great costumer who is on time, kind, and tips very well. I found Sheila by googling "African American Hair Salons Austin, Tx". Her salon as well as a few others pulled up on Yelp through a google search. I just moved here 5 days ago from Memphis and I had a wonderful stylist there, so I wanted to make sure I could find someone that could duplicate her work. Due to her portfolio, I was instantly drawn to research her even more. Then I visited her website and read her bio, and I was immediately sold on the fact that she's from Atlanta (known as the hair capital) as well as being a celebrity stylist in Dallas. I immediately called to schedule an appointment. She was very warm and nice over the phone, booking me for an appointment the following morning. The minute I walked into the salon, it was as if we were old friends. She has the sweetest spirit and she instantly got started on my hair. a few hours later, we were like great new buddies. My hair turned out very well, and I will be returning to her to do a full head weave. I currently have short hair with a perm, and a few bonded pieces in the front. But im looking forward to working with her again and pleased to say I found my stylist. I will say this, she gets you in and out and doesn't overbook her days. I've gone back and fourth with myself for the past 3 weeks on if I should write this review. I've decided to finally give in. It's important to have a variety of views so others can gain more perspective of a business. This review will only detail MY experiences during my visit. Week prior my visit: I was scheduled for a partial relaxer early in the week at 9:45am, which was done online. I'd found the salon on Yelp! and was trilled to have my hair done by someone with the years experience and resume as detailed on Shelia's website. I'd just moved to Austin and had a wonderful relationship with my former stylist. Shelia has extremely impressive background, which is important to me as a customer. Just as I was about to walk out of the door, I get a phone call from Shelia having to cancel the appointment. She was extremely apologetic. Her website had some technical malfunctions and she was actually out of town that entire week. As unfortunate the cancellation was considering my hair was in dire need of a relaxer, I totally understood. Mistakes happen. She said that she would open her schedule for the following week and would call me when she went into the site and fixed it. She ended by once again apologizing and stating that this is not how she operates her business. We ended on good terms. No harm done. Day of visit: I was schedule to come in at 9:45am earlier in the week once again. I had some difficulty finding the salon but was able to locate it after I called Shelia to ask for directions. There were 2 customers ahead of me when I got there. Fast forward a bit to save time, it's close to 10:15am and I am still waiting. Finally close to 10:20am, I am seated in the salon chair. Let me stop here and say that since the salon is small, there was a lot of "musical chairs" going on. Sit here, please. Move over there, please. When I get my hair done, I enjoy being treated during my appointment. Constantly moving from chair to chair hinders that from happening. Back to story, Shelia proceeds to begin my partial relaxer (back of hair and edges). I was disappointed that there is no consultation. No questions on the type of products I use on my hair, when was my last relaxer, my routine for up-keeping my hair, etc. As a new client, I think this is an important step in the visitation so that as a stylist, you're better able to meet the client's needs. In fact, there wasn't much conversing at all. She spent most time while I was in the chair speaking with the other clients. Think she asked me 1 or 2 general questions. Fast-forward again. My hair is washed, wrapped and dried. At this point 2 more clients have arrived. By now, it's close to 11:30am. I am moved to another chair so she can begin another client relaxer. OK, sure. It's now close to noon. Still waiting to have my hair styled. It's now close to 12:15pm. Still waiting to have my hair done. I hadn't eaten at this point and there were still 2 other people in front of me who needed their hair styled. At this pace, I was not going to get out of the salon before 1:30pm. I proceed to tell Shelia that I must be going and so I could go home and get ready for my 3pm job interview that was downtown Austin. Think she was a bit taken back. She proceeds to state that I should have told her when I walked in that I had an interview at 3pm. Hmmm.... I should not have to lay out my itinerary. I could totally see if there was a 2 -hour gap between hair appointment and time of interview but that was not the case. My appointment was to begin at 9:45am. I was not planning on spending 3+ hours in a salon. She stated that I could come back later in the day or in the week to have it styled. At this point, I was just done. I asked how much do I owe her she states $75 for partial relaxer. On her website, it stated that a partial relaxer was $25. I didn't feel like to arguing. Since she doesn't accept credit cards (Yelp! page states she does), I had to go get cash. I paid the $75 and left. The previous week mishap I was able to look over but not the second time around. I've never walked out of a hair service in my life and did not take up her offer to come back for a style. I should also mention that when I left close to 12:30pm, not one client had their hair 100% done. Based on my observations, I believe she overbooks. On her site, appointments are booked in 15-minute increments. For a one-chair salon, that is not enough time in between clients... especially for first time customers. This only leads to clients waiting well after their scheduled time before their visit actually starts. Based on the great Yelp! reviews, she clearly has skills. It is just unfortunate that I did not get the full experience that I was hoping for. I give 2 stars because while I did not have a good experience, I was satisfied with the results of my partial relaxer. read more
