Great beverage, wine, and alcohol selection! I went in to peruse the cold case for an afternoon libation to enjoy at the beach. I found one of my favorite Kombuchas in a new flavor (Nova Easy Kombucha - Sexy Piña Colada). The woman who rang me up - and I presumed owned the store - was friendly, and we chatted over our shared appreciation for incense, which she was burning behind the counter, so I decided to purchase some of that too (Nag Champa, of course)! This is by far one of the most awful customer service places I've ever seen. I went to go pay for my stuff, and he said there was gonna be a $.69 charge for something, and the chips were already $5 for a small bag that would be about $2 at 7-Eleven. Not a big deal so far, but when he said "5.69+ the charge" I said, "oh my god." Just slipped out- it's really freaking expensive! That's where the story would normally end, this guy in a mocking invoice, said "oh my god oh my God!!" That alone shock to me. I've never seen someone in customer service mock a customer and a voice. I said, excuse me? And he continued to do it. I said wow, I've never seen customer service like this. And he continued on "well you said oh my god!" Like arguing with me even after I literally stopped talking. I walked out and I said, "you are a total asshole." I've never said that to anyone in customer service in my life! My blood is boiling! This place is more of a convenience store rather than your traditional grocery market but since I was just looking for some drinks, this fit the bill. They did have a big selection of drinks but as you can expect from a place where there's not a lot of competition, the prices are a bit expensive and they charge you $0.25 for a plastic bag and $0.69 to use your credit card. I could understand these things since it's a small business but the guy behind the counter is just rude and makes you feel like you are bugging him when you go to the counter to buy something. The minute we walked in they kept staring at us like we were up to no good. I have 2 little kids so we were looking for a quick snack for them but I decided not to buy anything because the lady at the counter kept eyeing us. A couple minutes after we left she came outside looking suspiciously for us maybe assuming we stoled from her store. We walked down the ways to purchase food instead. The market is small but then again the town is a small cozy place so can't complain on that. Has all the things you need if your a tourist. We were tourists, so I can see why this place would disappoint as an actual grocery store, but for us it had errrrrrthang we could possibly need and then some. Huge liquor selection, including a discount rack, huge wine selection, including a wide variety of well-priced local wines with descriptions (try the Chronic Cellars Purple Haze wine), a small grocery section (eggs, dairy, some produce, prepared foods, ice cream, etc), household needs, pet needs.... you name it! So you're in Shell Beach and you drive up to this place and from the outside he kind of expect a miniature convenience store, or less. However when you walk in the door it is immediately evident to even the most casual Observer that this place is huge. It seems to have a little bit of everything. And more than anybody needs to have any picnic party or meal. Stop here pick up that drink, or a little wine or little spirits, and the lotto ticket, and any little condiment or goody you could find in a grocery store is here. I agree with everyone on the rudeness of the owner. He has a look of hatred the minute you walk through the door. Charges 0.69 to use your card. The merchandise looks like it's never checked for freshness. I would rather walk a mile to De Palo's, be treated with respect and friendliness even if I have to pay more there. There is another market several blocks down close to Dinosaur Park. It has a little Mediterranean Food counter. The staff there is so much more friendly!!!
