Stopped at this grocery store for some sweets and drinks. They had so much more to offer with a deli and the bakery goods. I even picked up some discounted succulents. The drink section was huge, I grabbed some local hard kombucha that did not disappoint. I enjoyed the lemon cupcakes and even went back the next day for another batch. They had more than one check out lane open which made the check out fast. I will definitely be back when I'm in Morro bay again. read more

I'm only giving this 4 stars because I will admit that some of the prices here are going to be slightly higher than other big chain markets. But honestly, that was to be expected. I think it's offset by knowing that the produce & meats are very high quality. We were staying nearby and needed to pick up a few items for our stay and decided to check out Spencer's. I'm glad we did. It's such a lovely community market. And they had a small farmer's market going on just outside that added a whole different shopping experience where we were able to pick up some things that we knew were grown locally. The selection isn't as massive as a chain market, but they will have just about everything you would ever need. From cereal to alcohol they have it all. The customers here were all so lovely. Several times we walked by a few just chatting away. You can tell that this is a local gathering place for the locals and that only adds to the charm. The employees are nice. Once again, they feel like they're all locals. It was a short trip for us to pick up essentials. But it only took that short trip to fall in love with this place. We are in the area maybe once a week and we will absolutely be coming here every time we stay from here on out. read more

I get the ads for Spencers but both are more than a 1/2 an hour away. So we were in Morro Bay for breakfast and decided to go there. So based on the ads I had a list of what I wanted to get. We got everything I wrote down. Good pricing on steaks, fruits etc. The store is much larger than Santa Maria, lots of room to move around. Everyone was very friendly. This is a specialty local market featuring Harris Ranch meats. , which are outstanding and reasonably priced. i came here for the oxtails, which are outstandingly fresher than fresh! The butcher was very friendly and knowledgeable. Wandering around this store, there are so many locally made gourmet and home made food items that are displayed in various parts of the store, which supports exploring the different aisles to find more treasures, like Harris Ranch Beef Tallow. The ambiance is a combination of down home and gourmet specialty. Customers say that the meats are very high quality. If I lived closer, I would make this my go-to grocery store. Lots of wonderful whole French breads that were unsliced so I politely asked a tall, brunette woman at the deli counter if they had a bread slicer? Coming from Kingsburg,Ca. This store has everything I want in a store. Fresh meat counter. You can buy the cut and portion you want. Your not forced to buy an already package meat. And they have a full functioning Deli. Yes they do. Just like all stores USE to have. Wine and beer , great produce department. And all the employees seems to be helpful and happy. Morro Bay Spencer's Market is a fine grocery store. They have a good selection, the employees are helpful and courteous, and the store is neat and clean. The store is ADA compliant and has mobility shopping scooters for the disabled, unlike some businesses such as Morro Bay Miner's Hardware. read more

Local Take: While the market has some charm as being kind of a vintage building, the best thing is not in the store, but is in the parking lot, on Thursday afternoons. What am I referring to? The Thursday Farmers Market! While even the vendors, pop into Spencer's for basics like milk & staples, the parking lot FM, is one of the best on the Coast. It has both variety and good prices. It kind of reminds of the Wednesday FM in Arroyo Grande, which takes place also in a Supermarket Parking Lot. Before or after you grab what you need from the dozens of mainly food & produce vendors, you can also grab some thing from inside the store. While they have some local products, and even some things from Cal-Poly Farms, much is rather standard, and kind of hit & miss. On the other hand one of our other local prolific Yelper's, Terry C., posted a whole bunch of Spencer's housemade brands of bottled/pickled/preserved goodies, & did find some more local products. As far as, gourmet Whole Paycheck type of items, the general selection is rather pedestrian, with a few stand outs. The service here is quite friendly and nice, at least at the checkout area, but quite a few others have had issues. Some locals have also criticized this place for a perceived lack of friendliness/cleanliness/freshness, especially with the Deli & some produce. Since I never impressed by near-generic Boar's Head products not stuff sitting in Grocery Deli for who knows how long, I steer clear away from many of these areas, unless I notice a new fresh batch come out. I find that many Groceries & Supermarkets generally are reluctant to give you a good idea of how "fresh" something is....with some exceptions, depending upon staff. Since it is independently owned, I guess they can hire & do what they wish. If you happen to live in the area and do not want to go far, this and one other supermarket [Albertsons] is pretty much it. If you happen to be staying for a 4 day weekend vacation in the area, and want to stock up your hotel, condo, or other place to stay with some goodies, a Thursday outing here is a good idea. One thing I did find that was good here was one of our local fresh breads inside the store on a random day. On Thursdays, you can find even fresher locally made bread in the FM. For those who are curious, Spencers is a shrinking local chain, which decreased from 3 stores to about 2, several years back {Lassen's & Cal-Fresh are the others}. They use to have a store in SLO, right where the newer 99 Cents store & Grocery Outlet used to be, off Los Osos & Madonna. I kind of miss that location since they had a better selection of local & Cal-Poly Farm products. One objectionable thing is that they somehow choose to place ads in one of the local rags. Since they may be one of the easiest supermarkets to get to from the Cambria areas, they probably help fulfill their needs for a bigger market. Of course, the big Kahuna of the markets in this area is the Albertson's on the other side of Hwy #1. read more

Been a regular customer here for nearly 15 years. The employees have always been nice. So, over that time I've purchased countless moldy cheeses, expired items on the shelf and witnessed the poorest food handling I've ever seen. They literally BBQ next to the dumpster. The deli is disgusting (gotten sick more than once buying their deli meat), but let it slide because the employees were always courteous - until recently. I had just spent a few hundred dollars on their overpriced, under refrigerated food, and realized I forgot something once I got home. I decided to walk my dogs and pick up the salsa I forgot. I tied my elderly big dog in the front, and put my small dog in a messenger bag. I was in there less than 30 seconds grabbing the salsa and went right to the register. I see an employee duck quickly away from my big dog who is by the door. He had fed him something secretly and NEVER asked or told me what it was. Quick backstory. When I lived in Chicago and San Francisco there were people who were poisoning dogs. My biggest fear for my furry family. So when he acted so suspiciously I was furious. WTF? And not only didn't they apologize. They tried to rationalize that bad decision. "Well he was blocking the door" the cashier chimed in. Ok? So you feed him to encourage that? Feeding a dog who's doing something you don't want rewards him and encourages him to keep doing it. He is also old and has a specific diet. I've tied him out front there at least 50 times and if someone wanted to feed him a treat they would typically ask and I would politely decline, because he has food allergies. You wouldn't give a random kid a peanut, would you? You don't feed other peoples dogs without permission. As a result my dog got sick and when I called the manager he defended them feeding my dog. Not caring about making him sick and now I have to euthanize him. The manager also threatened to ban me from the store, not taking my 15 years of being a loyal customer at heart. So I will gladly no longer shop in your cesspool of a store. Sunshine has better produce and a great selection at a fair price. They will be getting all my business, because they respect loyalty and treat their customers with respect. Unlike Spencer's pathetic manager. read more

When shopping at Spencer's Fresh Market, it is like stepping back in time. The interior has a home town atmosphere compared to the chain-store experience. The associates acknowledge their customers in a friendly, easygoing manner. They seem happy, and this carries over to an enjoyable shopping experience. This full-service supermarket offers a selection of Independent Grocers Alliance (IGA) brand merchandise, as well as their own branded line of specialty, premium products. Their meats are sourced from Harris Ranch, while their seafood offerings are a bit limited. We wish they would offer a better selection of fresh, wild-caught seafood. Their deli department features Boar's Head brand premium meats and cheeses, as well as numerous ready-made side dishes & salad selections. For example, they offer in rotation 6-plus types of potato salads, which should satisfy any discerning palette. The deli also offers freshly prepared hot foods for a ready-to-eat meal at home or a picnic at the beach. Some people do not like the fact that Spencer's Fresh Markets do not carry everything that one may find at a chain supermarket, however they have many products not found in the big conglomerates - an advantage. Weekly sale items are rarely restocked for bakery, canned, dry or jarred goods. Get your mind right to be disappointed even asking if items would be restocked soon, if you get there in the morning or afternoon....empty shelf. What a terrible grocery store. The staff at the deli is rude AF! Her exact words when she approached me was " what do you want" I was taken back and responded "what?" Took me a sec to say it. She then said " did you want something" I simply asked for what I wanted, said thank you and walked away. After paying I stopped to look at the house plants they had in the front as you exit. One of the cashiers made a comment about my appearance. Said, I had to much egg not. Yuck!! I'm completely offended. Egg not is gross. I'm not drunk I'm tired. I turned and looked and her and the lady she was helping. They were just staring at me. Wtf!! I literally just got off from a 12 hour shift and was just hungry. Why so rude? Yes ok, I was a mess. I'm a Baker, we get messy. But still no excuse to treat or talk about your customers like this. So disappointing!!! I will never ever ever go back here. Sometime it's difficult to find what you need at the name brand stores and thankfully that is why we have this wonderful market. I was looking for a specialty cut of meat and they had no problem getting it for me. The other stores in the area said no. Not only were the employees very friendly, but they were curious about how it was being used which was nice. On top of Spencer's always being a reliable market their prices are usually very reasonable if not good. They are a great local company to have. There's nothing "awesome" about this market. It has been a stop off for me over the past few years to pick up supplies but this will be the last time. The wine and liquor selection is boring, and forget the service Deli. Nobody working there and the have a shitty selection. Blah. The only Interesting thing here is the bathroom. I don't know what's happened to Spencer's in the past few months. We were always willing to pay a bit more to shop there because of the fresh fish and meat counter, but the fish lately has been awful and they have really jacked up the prices beyond what is competitive. Today's so called fresh Alaska halibut was neither fresh nor Alaskan at $30 per pound. I won't ever buy that again. Skin on, bony and tough. Their produce counter is still good but it's tough to know what you're paying until you check out. They used to label their produce. Now it's a mystery map. Come on guys. Aloha, we love finding great "local" establishments from restaurants to bars, but wow, a local specialty market! Spencer's is amazing - from home-made sausages in all kinds of flavors to home-made jams & jellies and more. Major local produce (we found out cheaper than on the side of the road & fresher looking, LOL) - local meats, local chips, local cakes, pastries etc. Wow, wish we were staying a week & cooking in, as you could totally get hooked on all of the partially prepared meals, just take home & voila you have a gourmet meal. My husband and I usually love this market, and it has been our "go to" for years. We have recently become very disheartened during the COVID-19 pandemic. We do not believe the owner is taking the pandemic seriously. Carts are not sanitized, there is not hand sign available for customers, there may or may not be wipes, and there is not a separate entrance and exit door. Recently the Morro Bay store decided to rearrange their lay out. As a result, people were going back-and-forth, bumping into each other, and certainly not practicing social distancing. It looks like we will be shopping at Albertson's from here on. read more

A smaller grocery store that is good for local homemade jams/jellies/salsas. Outstanding butcher/meat department that makes their own sausages. Carries a good selection of local produce (of course that's possible because they operate near some of the best farmland in the world.). They also carry a full array of products made at Cal Poly. Go Mustangs! They could improve their selection of wine (it's strange that it's not better given their proximity to some of the best.) They could also enhance their deli - it's good but not great. I used to love shopping at this store, the produce is the best and I love that it is local and not touristy like Albertsons. I love being able to find things that you can't find at the other markets, but wow, the checkers and baggers are so rude. They used to have nice people who remembered you each time that you came in, now it is a bunch of really, really rude people. Today, I got my very heavy over-filled bag thrown at me because the bagger was more interested in something else. I get it, this is just a stepping stone for you, but in your career path, there are a lot of jobs that we have to do as part of our growth and how you approach them is how you succeed. We like to come here when we are in town for speciaity items not available in our city. There are some very good sauces, pickled items and preserves, as well as some good honey. Purchased a "Prime" graded prime rib from Spencer's. It should have been graded "select" or approaching maybe and I mean maybe "choice". Got ripped off. I think the meat dept. pulled a bait and switch. They stuck a Harris Ranch Prime sticker on the roast. Been buying prime rib roasts from Spencer's in Morro Bay for 20+ years. It was cooked rare to medium rare. Driest prime rib ever. At $27.99 a pound, it should have been "Prime". I think I'll buy my roasts from Costco from now on. I can cut the roast off the rib, season it and tie it back to the rib with my roll of butcher's string. Beware of Spencer's meat dept. read more

Spencer's has the best deal on the Central Coast for little succulents! It's a little weird that this grocery store would be the best for plants but I'm not arguing! We bought about 100 little succulents over the course of a month for our wedding. That said, it's not the succulents that have me rating Spencer's as 5 stars, it's the employees. The employees remembered that my fiancé and I were going to come in frequently for succulents and made sure to have them available without any extra conversation or payment on our part. I have now been living in North Morro Bay almost two years and want to update this review. My perspective has changed on this store. Spencer's is still not a high-end independent grocery (like SB's Lazy Acres) but a solid and reliable neighborhood grocery somehow not yet bought out. Their's is the parking lot used by the Morro Bay Farmers Market Thursdays (which is itself worth going to). Going to this I have now visited Spencer's several times. They are a fairly local chain as far as I can tell, and seem one worth supporting. Their produce is mostly local and pretty good. Their sales on goods are minimal, however, prices high, and variety limited with quality mostly mediocre. I can only imagine their high cost of doing business given their location. Unfortunately Albertson's lower prices and selection gives Spencer's stiff competition. That said, it is great that there is a full-service grocery store so close to so many of Morro Bay's and the SLO coast's campsites and RV Parks - especially visitors who want to try local specialties and products. I still wish they had more kinds of avocados and citrus -- two excellent products from this area -- seems a great place to showcase and sell more of such produce. ***************** I really don't understand the high-star reviews of this place. I've shopped here a few times, and it is sort of a glorified corner store in terms of variety of products versus competitive price points. I like Spencers and everything but I just threw away 3 packages of lunch meat that I bought Thursday all expired. I got some Drumsticks that were so soft we just threw those away .
