Family owned businesses are getting harder and harder to come by these days, but Shelton's is still the shop to beat in town. What was once an old gas station (so my Dad tells me) is now a full service and repair center that even dabbles in buying and selling used cars. Alignment readjusting, struts replacement, suspension check ups -- all the brutal beatings our cars get from the crater-sized potholes on the dirt roads gets fixed up at Shelton's. The owner (Myron), his son, and the owner's grandson all work here, in addition to a handful of other mechanics. Very honest and trustworthy, which is important if you're like me and wouldn't know a wheel bearing from a ball joint (or how much either one retails for). My mom even gets her oil changed here because they offer a better price than the Jiffy Lube down the street. An added bonus: if you have to wait on your car, the Farmers' Market is in close proximity, and a snack at Steady Eddy's (if they're open) definitely trumps sitting in the waiting room. read more

Dealt with Myron Shelton for over 2 decades. He always tried to get that extra dollar out of me, lol. But that's business. Couldn't complain about the work, though. Always top notch. Moved back to Flint after being away for 18 years. When I needed service my first call was to Shelton's. I just needed a ball joint pressed into my steering knuckle (off the car). Simple job, I had already removed the old one. The guy I assume was the owner now laughed at me and said, "No thanks." I said, "Really, just no thanks?" Great work, and they will save you hundreds if not more! My wife's car had an issue with air conditioning- brought it to a dealership in grand blanc that deals with Honda's and they wanted at least $700 and a day to fix the issue. Shelton's work? 3 hours and $50. Not to mention they'll help you with transportation needs while servicing your car. I agree with the other comment here- support local businesses, and at a 93% savings why wouldn't you? read more

I recently had my back brakes and routers replaced at sheltons. They picked my car up from work and brought it back when finished. The job was reasonably priced. I would definitely come here again for brakes or tires. read more

Please save your self some time and money and take your vehicle to a place that knows how to properly inspect a vehicle, provide honest and accurate pricing while maintaining professionalism. If your looking to have your vehicle inspected because you don't know what's wrong it; then this is not the place to go. They don't inspect vehicles properly and they charge a $50.00 fee for you to tell them what's wrong with your vehicle. They don't tell you that they charge a fee until after they have your keys and this is the ONLY place that does not apply that fee to your repairs. If I could post my receipt I would. Walk away and use another repair shop. You wont be sorry. read more

So I needed a safety inspection done on my vehicle (I live out of state but spend half my time in Flint). I have a list of 10 points from my State to be verified and then I could take the invoice and send it in before I can get my Registration and tags. I wanted to support a local business so I stopped in on a Saturday. The place was not busy, and I explained that I simply needed a certified mechanic to complete the check. Bottom line is that they refused to do it and said "I've never heard of such an inspection and I don't know what you are going to do with it." In short, the lunatic that was apparently owner or head mechanic implied I was trying to use him to get something illegal done. I left, went to Belle Tire and they pulled out a standard DOT form used in Michigan and said, "No problem, we do these all of the time." Not sure if Sheldons is a front or they simply have no awareness of anything in the world past Atwood Stadium or Chevy in the Hole. I'm an engineer, and my advice is to stay away. read more

They claimed they put a new ignition lock cylinder in my truck. They charged me $150. They claimed they did not need to reprogram the key to the new cylinder. Bullshit. Now the security light will NOT go off. Now my truck won't start. You can jump the relay and it will start up for like 2.2 seconds and shut off instantly after that. We dripped all the plastic down from the dash so we could trace some wires down. We found wires and brackets they NEVER hooked back up. Well long story short... I took it to them Monday morning for them to call me Tuesday to tell me they are refusing to even look at my truck! I am serious! I have called the pontiac dealer and they informed me that the key DOES need to be programmed to work with the new ignition lock cylinder!!! They are liars and they do NOT stand behind their "work"! Stay away from these people at ALL costs even if they are a little cheaper. Be smarter then I was with trusting this business aInd pay for work to be done by people who will stand behind and garantee their work!!! read more

I regret going here. I got a used tire from them. They did not put a valve cover on, and I had to ask for one. The tire ended up crusty and was damaged within a month. Why give me a bunk tire? read more

I don't think I will come here again. Waited more than an hour to get a tire aired up and back on my car, because someone who appeared to be friends with the people working there was pushed in front of me to have the same exact thing done to his car. Was spoked to like I was an idiot, which seems pretty typical at car repair shops, and everyone was yelling. Hello, I would just like to warn everyone to proceed with caution when deciding to use Shelton Automotive. I don't doubt their service work, and I'm sure their repairs are dandy, but their customer service is god awful. I had the worst experience talking with a man on the phone today. I wanted more answers about my car, but instead I got a snooty response from the guy over the counter who lied to me about if they had looked at the car or not and the damage done to it, especially since my red flag was that I already knew what the biggest problem was. Once I gave him attitude back and told him what I saw happening to the car, they realized it was a bigger issue and called me back within an hours time to give me an estimate and had actual answers of what needed to be done to it. I will never recommend this place to a single person. Good luck to this business if they are going to continue to hire rude men who think girls don't know cars. read more
