Best Tianjin food in Flushing, they specialize in "tofu brain" which is just super soft homemade tofu with a delicious savory sauce over it. The sauce is similar to hot and sour soup, is the closest way to describe it but thicker. You can add spice or not. Pair it some fresh buns and it's an ideal breakfast. My favorite is the lamb bun but today I went at 2PM so the lady there reminded me it's not fresh anymore (she can microwave it but don't recommend to), and recommended me the veggie bun that's straight out of the steamer. I paid $4.75, cash only of course. Side note: some reviewers are leaving reviews for the Fuzhounese stall that's next to Sheng Jin it's not the same but they've got some good Fuzhou style noodles and wontons there! Solid no frills place for breakfast. It's inside a food hall. Have been looking for someone where that serves the Northern Chinese classics. I've been exploring Flushing specifically searching for a northern Chinese dessert called rolling donkey, which is a soft mochi-like rice cake roll with a red bean paste filling. The name comes from the soybean flour that is dusted atop the dessert, which resembles a donkey rolling in the sand. I had a particularly delicious version at Juqi, and wanted to look for a street food friendly option. My friend recommended Sheng Jin, which was incredibly tricky to find. All I can say is look for the yellow awning and walk all the way inside the cramped little mall to the back where you will find Sheng Jin. Their rolling donkeys are all packaged neatly at the counter and they are comically huge. They sell for $8 for 4, and will comfortably feed 2-3 per slice. Great bang for your buck, but I thought the hefty size of each slice, coupled with the chunky red bean paste made for an incredibly rustic version of a rolling donkey. Overall, not my favorite version, but if you like large portions and texture, this would be a great choice! I'll also add that there are a lot of other snacks available at the stall, though I did not get a chance to try anything else. One of the only spots that serves dofunao ("tofu brains", savory tofu soup)!! I feel like I tried to come here 10 years ago but couldn't find the shop, now 10 years later I was finally able to satisfy my tofu cravings. The main menu is Chinese but there is also a menu in English with pictures on the side with their main items. Between two people we got 1 small tofu soup (dou fu nao), 1 small soy milk (dou jiang), 1 fried dough (you tiao), 2 pork buns (zhu rou bao), 1 scallion pancake roll (jian bing guo zi) and 1 donkey roll to go (lu da gun). It came out to be ~$17. Honestly the only actual good thing was probably the tofu soup and the donkey roll. They add sesame paste to the soup which I've never had before, it was interesting! They didn't add cilantro by default so I should have asked. The pork buns, scallion pancake roll, and fried dough stick were simple and homey, but nothing special. I wish the fried dough stick was fresh but they were just sitting out on the side. The scallion pancake roll is made fresh, it's basically a crepe with egg and either fried dough stick or a crispy cracker thing in the middle. The pancake is $7 here which is quite pricey! (Maybe because of the eggflation ?). The donkey roll I ate at home - I'm a sucker for mochi so this was right up my alley. Apparently this is a popular Beijing dessert but I've honestly never had this in China at least. They also had shao bing which is another classic breakfast bread, but I didn't try it this time. I found myself in Flushing craving scallion pancake breakfast. Having no idea where to go, I yelped and found Sheng Jin. Good thing yelp had a pic of the storefront and "stall", because I would have never have found this place. Being that I don't speak a lick of Mandarin or read Chinese, I got really lucky that they just brought out a fresh batch of scallion and egg pancakes. I pointed and handed over a $10 bill and was handed back $8.50. What a bargain for such a uniquely tasty experience! The scallion pancake was steamy and fresh with a good amount of chew and flakiness - just perfect! I couldn't help but smile, as I sat on a folding chair, at a folding table with strangers knowing that this was my first time here. I got back in line to try this "donkey roll" that everyone on yelp seems to like and I wasn't disappointed. It was a unique combination of flavors - slightly sweet red bean paste, rolled/wrapped with thin mochi paper, dusted with a toasty powder. I've never had this dessert before, but I would do it again. To all my non-Chinese speaking homies out there - don't be afraid to check this place out despite the lack of English signage! Find it by my outside picture and then walk to the back past the fish balls place. I was following a recommendation for trying a "Chinese crepe" and "tofu brains" (doesn't actually have brains - just called that because it looks like it). These are both, from what I understand, classic northern Chinese breakfast street food items. The pro tip, I heard, was to dunk your crepe into your brains. And I can confirm that that was a great call. Especially because the doughy stuff in the crepe was kind of dry (not in a bad way, just in need of sauce) - it was basically fried dough sticks. They also just complement each other separately. I looked up the names of these foods in Mandarin to show the person at the counter and that worked out well. Here they are for your reference - Chinese crepe - 煎饼馃子 Tofu brains - 豆腐脑 The only question I was faced with aside from tofu brains size (I went with small) was how spicy - and I said "very." I'm not sure if she toned it down for me or if it just wasn't very spicy, but I didn't find it to be particularly intense. Although I do have a fairly high tolerance, so your mileage may very. But I think anyone who likes spicy would have no problem with the "very" spicy I received, at least. I will admit this is the first time I've had these foods, so I'm not, obviously, as good of a reference point as those more experienced in these reviews, but hey - maybe there's value to saying that to a foreign palate, it was great! The place is definitely a little grungy, but no problem, it's still fun. There are seats, but I took my food and brought it to the nearby James Bland playground / park, where there were some tables for eating and it was a nice break from the hubbub. Glad I did. Also found the woman working the counter to be super nice - it was very busy and she was still happy to go through the language shuffle with me. Got the rolling donkey since they're known for it. It's basically a mochi and red bean roll that is coated in soybean powder. The location is close to the train station, but can easily be missed because the entrance is so small and most of the signs are all yellow on that block. Look for the "Tian mei" and "Jin feng fishball" sign outside or the 41-40 building number in the corner. Once you go in, head straight to the back and it'll be on your left. You'll notice a clear display case filled with pastries and right by the cashier is their famous rolling donkey. If you feel intimidated to speak mandarin, just point to it and tell the lady behind the counter how many you want to order. They have other food options too, but the menu is fully chinese. You really have to know exactly what you are here to eat to order. Behind the stand are a few small tables for you to sit down and quickly eat. - Rolling Donkey (驴打滚, lv da gun) ($1.25) - a more traditional chinese treat that will easily be a great hit among your parents and grandparents. If you aren't a fan of sweet red beans, you wouldn't like this. The red beans are mashed, but still have some of the whole beans mixed in, not entirely smooth. You'll walk past another business or two to get to this one - it was the only one open for breakfast at 8:30 on a Monday. As others have remarked the tofu (dou fu) nao is almost like a mild hot and sour soup - the tofu is much smoother and creamier, the broth is not exactly sour. It's a very nice dish. I also ordered a sort of open face jian bing with fried egg over the layers of thin pastry. They did not provide a sauce, but it was tasty enough. Consumed these on one of the tables that run along the wall opposite the food stalls. I had a nice pork stuffed bao when I got home - the dough was not too thin, not too thick, and the filling was savory and juicy. I am not a fan of you tiao, can't speak to those. This is our first time trying Northern Chinese breakfast. We got the tofu nao and the jian bing. The tofu nao is a soft tofu in a soup that taste almost like a mild hot and sour soup. We're used to eating sweetened soft tofu so our brains felt like our tastebuds were playing tricks. It's like our brain expect it to taste sweet and when we eat the tofu nao, it tasted sweet and sour. We got the small size which was $3 and the large is $5. They probably raised the price because one of the reviews showed pictures of their menus and the price is different. Even with the raise (given the rise of our cost of living), it's still so cheap! We also tried their jian bing which is the Chinese fried dough (you tiao) with a brown/ black sauce spread over wrap in a thin egg omelette. The jian bing is good, but it was a bit too much dough for us. The spread had a unique taste, which we also enjoyed. But the next time we come back, we would probably get the large tofu nao and try that rolling donkey. We minus 1 point because you have to be able to speak mandarin and read Chinese to order. By the window there is a chestnut vendor. They make authentic Muslin food, mostly pancakes and buns. Hmm we were in long island last week, and I decided to come to Sheng Jin Eatery in Flushing for Chinese styled breakfast. The staff were nice but the service was really slow. Cash only restaurant! We ordered a lot of food. My favorite was the "You Tiao", the Chinese cruller, that goes best with soy milk. The meat Buns were pretty good too. We were really disappointed that they did not have any lamb soup in the morning. We ordered the Douhua instead. Although there were some building and health violations(a staff member was smoking in the kitchen and there was a leak from the ceiling), but that didn't stop me from trying the Donkey Roll, and sampling a noodle dish. Came here at 8am on a Saturday for breakfast and had their sesame shao Bing, egg and chive and rice vermicelli stuffed pancakes. Line is short and moved pretty fast, giving me just enough time to scope out the menu. Love the youtiao and dou fu nao. It might be difficult for people who don't know Chinese to eat here so just come with your Chinese friends to help you do the ordering ( pointing also works) My Chinese is borderline proficient but I was still able to order things. Ordered the: 1. Tofu nao - this was a 5/5 item. Savory sesame, crunchy wood-ear mushroom, and hot tofu. If you haven't had this before, it's probably an acquired taste. I recommend paying attention to the variation in textures and how the spicy hot pepper oil and umami of the sesame paste balance and taste with the different textures. 2. Jian bing - 3/5. Not very inspiring. The fried dough inside was dense, neither chewy nor crunchy, two preferred variations. 3. Chinese chives filled bing - 3/5. As noted there's very little space to sit. If you're close by I recommend getting it to-go to eat at home. If you're making a special trip to Flushing, I recommend trying the tofu nao if you're passing by, but skipping the other items.
