Mrs. Lovett can rejoice, because The Worst Pies In London has found a new home at Sherlock Holmes. The only mystery is what incredible substance they've discovered for their pie crust. An inedible (and indestructible) material resembling a mix of particle board and cardboard, this miracle material is impervious to gravy, forks, knives and digestive systems. Add "triple fried" A.K.A "really greasy" chips, and indifferent service, and you've got nice Holmesy ambiance on indigestion. The wife liked her fish and chips, so it wasn't a total loss. read more

Yeah, this pub is ok. Came here because it was packed in the Ship and Shovel and it was just OK. Nothing special. It was packed in here too - but on a Friday night I shouldn't have been surprised. It was also just under a fiver for a pint and a coke. It's rare I drink soft drinks in a pub but to me, that seemed expensive? Am I wrong? It pulls in the crowd that don't care on a Friday night. They've just finished work and they'll probably head off into Leicester Square. Other than that it's just a bit average. And the guys here should really not kick up a fuss when people ask them to move their coats so they can sit down. Grrr. I'm not sure I'll bother coming here again. read more

As many past visitors correctly noted, the pub is nowhere near Baker Street - but it is close enough to the famous Charing Cross, Trafalgar Square, and a handful of London landmarks. The menu is a repertoire of names that owe their origin to Sherlokian stories, and judging by the food I had there it is a splendid adventure, you will certainly not be disappointed. Better yet, for all Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson fans worldwide, in the pub there is a room filled with the famous sleuth's memorabilia. I was especially surprised to see a figure of Holmes with a hole in his head. To this day, I've no idea why they decided to place that particular mannequin in the pub. The walls along the staircase are decorated with some of Conan-Doyle's own drawings; in one of those, made shortly before his death, he depicted himself as a horse who carries an overloaded cart. Last but not least, the Russian visitors will not be disappointed either: they will find a photograph and a letter presented to the pub by Igor Maslennikov, the director of the Russian TV series based on Conan-Doyle's stories. The series, starring Vassily Livanov as Sherlock Holmes and Vitaly Solomin as Dr Watson, has wowed the audiences in Russia and in the West since its release in 1970s-early 1980s. After a day of sightseeing (27 October 2011) and riding the London Eye, several of us headed to the Sherlock Holmes Pub located near Trafalgar square. I had a beer here back in 2005 and liked the atmosphere, so I wanted to go back. The place was filled with people who were just off from work enjoying a pint or two of ale. We found the London pubs filled to capacity, with people sprawled out onto the street (not so on the weekends), and a lively atmosphere. I had the steak and mushroom in ale pie (£10.95), which had a flaky crust on top and served with mashed potatoes and green beans and carrots. It was tasty and satisfying. Tony had the fish and chips £9.25, a large cod with a crispy batter and served with mushy peas. Food and drink prices are reasonable. It's a busy place, but cozy and warm. read more

We had a number of issues here. Clueless staff, forgotten food, and known pick pockets here! The manager was incredibly unhelpful and rude when we addressed the pickpocketing issue. I would never go here again, the food wasn't worth the other issues! read more

I went there because I was in the area and looking for a pub using qype as recommendation. Unfortunately this time I didn't agree with the reviewers. Looks by far better from the outside than on the inside feels rundown and the atmosphere is less than cozy the Sherlock Holmes paraphernalia didn't change that. Service is grumpier than usual. We wandered into this restaurant after a long day of travel and Bianca took great care of us even though we had no reservation "booking". I'd recommend having a reservation, but we got lucky. Scotch Eggs and Fish & Chips were excellent. Service was fantastic making us feel incredibly welcome. Location is also convenient to Covent and Leicester. read more

Steer clear of the food here! I got food poisoning from eating in the restaurant upstairs. While the place is charming for tourists like me, we had to wait almost an hour for our food to come and the place wasn't even that busy. Everything was overcooked and cold by the time it was finally brought up. Between our table we tried the roast beef, risotto, mac and cheese, and the prime steak burger. All of it was dry and disgusting. If I could give 0 stars, I would. The womens restrooms were absolutely filthy--used tampon applicators and toilet paper everywhere. If you insist on visiting this landmark I would strongly recommend only getting a beer at the bar. read more

We were recommended this place by a cab driver while we were in London on 3/12. It was cool....until I finished my meal and turned to the left and saw 2 mice running around on the ground. Really cute pub close to Trafalgar Square, seems touristy, but seems to have a good amount of locals as well. Great cider, nice bartenders. Downside was the kitchen was already closed around 10pm when we tried to order dessert. Overall, good times, fun place. read more

My family and I were here on a Sunday evening. We ordered dinner which did not arrive for an hour and a half. The dinner was cold for half of our party. We requested that they heat the dinner back up, and it took another 15 minutes for that to happen. The service at this pub is abyssal and dismissive. I highly suggest moving along to the next eatery. read more

This pub was literally around the corner for our hotel so for both nights we stayed in London we stopped in. They have a good selection of beer and the best part was the ample amount of space to stand outside and drink. Bartenders were also very nice, although I do feel bad the bartender helped me pay with the credit card and basically made it so I wouldn't tip her. Must have known by my accent I'm American and she probably sees that most Americans feel the need to tip every time they are served. TOURIST TRAP! RUDE! LAIRS! I rarely write reviews but this one needed to be written so others dont make the same mistake. My fiance and I were only in London for one night and while walking back to our hotel we were to hungry to be picky so we stopped at Sherlock Holmes. The bar downstairs seemed nice, but once we went upstairs for dinner everything changed. The host and waitress were very rude and completely ignored us. When we finally were able to order dinner they told my fiance they were out of Fish and Chips. He ended up ordering the sausage and mash. I got the roast chicken. Both were the most BLAND food we have ever eaten. After we were done they bused every other table in the restaurant but ours and I had to get out of my chair to ask them to come over to our table. THE WORST PART- The waitress LIED to us about being out of Fish and Chips! We saw numerous other tables upstairs and downstairs get Fish and Chips after they told they were out.... huh... really you were out of them? We are not stupid. A tourist trap filled with cheap memorabilia, conveniently located along the touring bus routes. Not proximate to anything relevant to Sherlock Holmes except Charing Cross. The bar staff seems to enjoy not bringing your pint to the table, and wonders why you cry out when your first forkful of steaming bread pudding with curdled treacle singes the roof of your mouth. This is a nice spot. We had a plate of fish and chips here w/ a drink before getting back out. The service was pleasent.

The decor is charming and the fish and chips the best I've had anywhere out of 65 countries. But the rest of the food is lacking. The roast beef was small and a bad cut. (We has also heard the same from our friends.). The staff upstairs and downstairs really weren't too interested in the customers. The bathroom smell was miserable. read more

I can only write about the drinks and the atmosphere, as we didn't try any of the food. We stopped in while waiting on the Ghost Bus Tour (don't waste your money on THAT!) to have a couple of drinks. The place was packed, and is definitely very touristy. Anyone who's a fan of Sherlock Holmes will enjoy the place though, as there are lots of kitschy things on the walls and overall the atmosphere is that of a typical London pub. The drinks were good, nice & cold, and service was friendly, so I have no real complaints. The ONLY negative is that once our tour was over, we came back hoping to get something to eat, only to find that they were closing...and although there were still several customers in the place, the bar had closed as well. This restaurant has so much potential with its theme and location. Unfortunately, there must be a serious lack of management. Downstairs is a bar. Upstairs is the restaurant. I went upstairs. It was somewhat busy, but not packed. It took over an hour for me, party of one, to be seated and to get my soup appetizer. An hour! And I did not even have to wait for a table! I sat at my table with no food for an hour. I specifically ordered an appetizer because I was very very hungry from traveling and walking all day. Servers were nice but not very attentive. Had to flag them down for a drink list, and by the time my food arrived it was time for me to leave so I unfortunately had to scarf it down. Didn't even have time to eat my salad. Food quality was just fine. Not sure about the bar, but upstairs in the restaurant it was all tourists -- FYI. An avid Sherlock fan may want to go to this bar/restaurant if they have plenty of time and patience. read more

Horrible service!!! We were visiting from the states and decided to go here for dinner (since it's Sherlock Holmes) and why not. But we quickly regretted it. Got seated fairly quickly. Then took about 10-15 minutes to get our drinks ordered and then another 10 minutes to even get our drinks and our food ordered. Then it took about another 45-50 minutes to get our food. Our waitress did not check on us until we waved her over and whenever she brought us our drinks/food. I guess that's the quality service you get in the UK when tip is not expected. What a shame. Unless you really, really love Sherlock Holmes, keep walking. If you really, really love Sherlock Holmes, go for a drink and eat elsewhere. We stopped at this pub after an exhausting day of travel and were just looking for simple pub food and a pint. It was around 8:45pm at night, and while the place looked a little shabby from outside, there were quite a few people in the main level bar area so we decided to give it a go. When we went in, we were told food was upstairs so up we went. Upstairs was considerably less crowded. We were promptly seated by an extremely cheerful waitress whose enthusiasm and somewhat blue-collar charm were the only really good part of our experience. The place has what is claimed to be a replica of Holmes and Watson's study behind a large glass wall. I guess that's what it is, but it looks incredibly cheesy. That didn't stop tourist after tourist from having their photo taken in front of "the study" and the flashes from their cameras did get a bit distracting. Their local ale - the Sherlock (of course) was actually decent. Not fabulous, but pretty good. The food however. Ugh. I had fish and chips with mushy (mashed) peas. Hard to screw up, and it was, if I'm charitable, mediocre. The peas were actually bad tasting. Probably from a can. My two dining companions had Bangers and Mash in Yorkshire pudding and the steak pie. Both said their meals bordered on disgusting. From the look of the food, I wouldn't disagree. I had the best of the bunch, and mine was on the low end of pub food quality. Service was consistently good and I do have to applaud our waitress for staying so cheerful after 9pm at what must be a non-stop tourist trap. If you really love Sherlock Holmes, give this place another star. If you don't, and you are not impressed by cheerful service, subtract a star. Bottom line - stay away from the food. read more

A short walk from Trafalgar Square lies Sherlock Homes. An english pub built in 1957, as a themed pub attracting Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts supported by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's family. There is a glass enclosed replica of Holmes' and Watson's sitting room and study upstairs and bar downstairs. First off, the bartender was a bit of a snobby witch. She asked to see id (no problem) and made some snarky comment about how I was older than she and looked alot younger (uhh let me slap you youngin' and yes I will take your backhanded comment as a compliment aka see you in 10 years you haggard *ok calm down NYC girl!*) Boyfriend and I ordered two beers and bar staff said there was a credit card limit. Not sure if the same applies to the UK but as a bartender in the US, I know that credit card limits are pretty illegal but I was too tired, thirsty to care. We were sure that we'd drink more but the beer recommended by the bartender tasted like crap and I forced myself to get it down making me regret listening to such a youngin' smh. We sat at the end of the bar drinking our beers minding our own business when two other bartenders/barstaff came over and said to each other "I wish all these bloody customers would just leave already, I can't wait til close" I found it comical and interjected with "yea, you ain't gotta go home but you gotta get the hell outta here!" making a joke to which I guess isn't funny across the pond. Oh for pete's sakes, you girls work in a bar, that's like one of the most fun jobs in the world, get the stick out of your butts, loosen up and have some personality or fake it/go get it elsewhere sheesh. Credit card limit aside, we got some bags of crisps (funky onion one and salt and vinegar) and a sherlock holmes' pint glass my boyfriend thought was nerd cool. Sherlock Holmes was probably my least favorite pub we visited and with all the other historical and friendly pubs we frequented, I would recommend you pass over this one. Pretty standard pub fare here, but the menu items have been given names to reflect the Sherlock Holmes theme. The cool thing in the eating area is that there is also a room you can see that is set up like how one would imagine Holmes' flat would look at 221b baker street. It was pretty cool to check out the display while eating; other than that, it's a pretty typical place. read more

Very touristy. The atmosphere is great, but considering a lot of people are coming off a tour, they charge more for a not so great bar and food. So rest assured it will be crowded and you'll spend a lot of money. Just skip it all together. I won't be going back, that's for sure. read more

Maybe this is just a locals only destination that a tourist wouldn't know about, but we were treated so terribly here by hostess and manager alike. Husband and daughter walked thirty minutes to eat here, arrived 8:25, and were told they don't serve children (our child is 12, so not exactly the young and disruptive type). As we walked out, a boy exactly her age walked in and sat down with his family. The hostess' explanations seemed to be invented as they went along. First, he arrived "before." Before when? Before now. Oh, so there's a cutoff time for when children are served? Yes. When is that? I dunno, now. Well, what do you mean now?...and around it went. She told me 8:30 they stop seating children, but by that time we'd been chatting around in circles about it since before that time. To end the whole scene, the manager comes and tells me that the cutoff time is actually 8! Clearly they are more in the business of fantastical storymaking than serving good food to fine patrons.
