Isn't it mandatory while in London to eat fish and chips? I think so. That would be like going to New York and not having a slice of pizza. My friends and I stumbled upon this place while doing the tourist-thing in London. It was quick service, but the food was great. The fish was already fried and was lightly breaded and crisp. The fillets were huge! You also got a side of thick-cut fries (err, I mean chips) and another side of mashed peas. I didn't care for the mashed peas because I don't even like peas when they're not mashed - but the mashed consistency was just a texture I didn't care for. The decor in the place was cute - it was homey. The furniture was a hodge-podge of different tables and chairs. Nothing matched, but that was the point. This place isn't anything really special. It was crowded enough we had to stand outside so I'm glad that it was a fairly warm night. The bartender was friendly, but no more than he had to be to get your drink order. There are a few nice beers to choose from, but once again no more or less than you'll find in an average place. The atmosphere is fun for a tourist and in a good location between Trafalgar Square and the London eye. Honestly I was just mostly disappointed with the food. I may have had the most bland fish sandwich I've ever had in my life. There was almost no fish to it and what it was had no flavor, hard (not just crispy), and severely disappointing. I lived near here for awhile and this place is continually packed. There's a constant stream of tourists taking pics of the outside as well as streaming in. Drinks tend to be on the pricier side, service tends to be friendly but slow and most times you are lucky if you can find a seat. All in all, it has a nice pub vibe - plus the added quirkiness of housing a mini-sherlock museum - so worth a go as a tourist for a pint when it's not overly heaving with people and you happen to be by Embankment.Just down the walkway beside it is the lest touristy, more authentic Ship & Shovel pub that I tend to like just a bit more. read more

Even though it's kind of a touristy place (not a proper English Pub) it does have however, good cider on tap and great fish and chips. My friends and I went on the Hop On/Off of London and received coupons for 3 pound Fish and Chips at Sherlock. Portion size was great; very tastey! read more

Beer selection is top notch, tons of hand casks. Best Guinness I've ever had. We had dinner, way more than just bar food. It was the second best meal of our trip. Weirdly, this Sherlock Holmes themed pub is nowhere near Baker Street. Since it's a tourist attraction the food and drink are expensive, but it's worth getting a half and looking through all the cod Holmesian memorabilia they have on display. I'm sure there are all kinds of continuity errors that would make hardcore Holmes fans angry, but I like it. read more

I go here with my wife whenever we're in London. Our initial visit was due to the fact that we're both fans of Sherlock Holmes, and Pubs for that matter. Well, let me tell you that this place does not disappoint. It's got a great Pub downstairs, and upstairs there's a really good restaurant. Some folks may think that the whole Holmes theme is a bit cheezy (they've got a recreation of Holmes' study behind glass and the menu items are "Holmescentric"), but I'm into that shit so it was fine with me. The food was was really good, nothing too fancy, just GOOD comfort food. Great fish & chips, bangers & mash, mushy peas,etc. Try the spotted dick, it's very tasty. Dope pub. We ate upstairs outside which was very chill. it was pretty well covered so it wasn't too cold. We all got fish n chips was was pretty good. Very fishy and it came out as one large fish. The breading on it was great and the fries were good as well. I dont know why there was this peamash thing that was like baby food which was random since it doesnt go with the dish. Other than that the meal was really good. The whole environment of the place is great. Fuck the service though but thats that UK shit so i cant really complain. read more

We weren't planning on eating here, we just walked by and stopped in after going to the London Eye. It had a really nice pub feel and the waiters were very attentive. My wife and I had the fish and chips, which was really good and a good sized portion. They had fountain drinks which a lot of places in London didn't have, so that was nice instead of just getting a single can or bottle. Frankly, Watson A pub like most others, the Sherlock Holmes is a good place for a relatively quiet drink. They sometimes put chairs outside when the weather is nice, so it's a good place to relax and watch the day go by. This isn't an overly themed pub, the Sherlock memorabilia is around, but it isn't in your face. read more

This is definitely a tourist trap. We went to the restaurant upstairs, the service was polite but unhelpful in many regards. Food took about an hour to arrive which was very annoying especially due to the simplicity of the menu and the off hour time. Worst service ever. Nobody to greet us and rude when they did! Sat down and the server just stared at us and didn't even say anything luckily we knew why we came! Ordered Sherlock ale beer and it was super flat and bad taste and ran out so only one person could get it. Then when asked to trade for a different one after only taking a few sips they refused and told me that's how it's supposed to taste. Server never came back by! We went here for dinner at the recommendation of Frommer's Easy Guide to London 2017 Edition on Pg. 255, as part of the Westminster Walking Tour. The place was packed with the after work crowd downstairs, mostly drinking some beers and winding down. The upstairs restaurant was 75% full and looked promising. It took 11 minutes for us to get served drinks (we only ordered water), 41 minutes to receive our awful appetizer (smallest portion of buffalo chicken I have ever seen), and finally after 64 minutes, a portion of fish and chips with a taste slightly better than eating cold french fries. Speaking of that...there was a total of 9 french fries on my plate. I can't believe the other reviews commenting on here at the great taste of the food. Really though, the worst part of this place was the service. We could tell that all of the other parties (7 or 8 tables) were getting frustrated by the lack of attention from the serving staff. We at least got to order drinks and an appetizer, the family next to us that arrived at the same time somehow waited at least 30 minutes before they placed an order for anything, even drinks. The couple next to us asked for water, and their check, only to wait at least 15 minutes for each separate request. I figured their staff would have noticed each table continuously asking for different things that they might pay for attention, but nope. Interestingly enough, after noticing the empty appetizer plate on our table that w had finished about 20 minutes before, a random server (one of the 4 or more on the floor not paying attention) asked us if we wanted dessert, only for us to respond that we haven't even eaten dinner yet. The staff were more concerned with setting up tables for a group of 8-10 for an hour or more, only for that party to not even show up during our time there. As someone else mentioned, they were just joking around behind the bar and doing random tasks, basically doing anything they could do to ignore the customer. We repeatedly asked to know if our order was put in, or on the way, or if we could get the check early, only for no one to ever return and let us know anything. After exiting to the downstairs bar, we noticed that the work crowd just had drinks still, and maybe an appetizer or two, so there should be no reason for the restaurant crowd upstairs to suffer. Not one to complain very often, but this was just a dismal experience and a poor way to end a great day in the London/Trafalgar Square area. This restaurant must have paid to have their name advertised. But, I guess we got what we deserved for trying a place right off of a main tourist attraction. I went to The Sherlock about a week ago for a reunion with some friends and I had a really good time. We were able to secure a few tables outside, which really made all of the difference, since it was a beautiful day and the pub inside doesn't offer a lot of seating for big groups. When I went to find my friends, I roamed the pub/restaurant and the upstairs part offers a little Sherlock exhibition, which seemed pretty cool and unique. We had many pints there and the bar service is excellent - the bartenders were really warm and friendly. We were having such a good time that we decided to stay to eat. I ordered my favorite - the pulled pork burger and I have to say, I was disappointed. I can't even tell you how many pulled pork burgers I've consumed in London and this was the worst of all of them: it didn't have that sweet flavor to it - it wasn't bitter but the after taste just seemed off. However, I will say that their apple pie dessert is totally worth ordering - it was delightful! I would come back here again given its very central location (between Charing cross and Embankment) and the friendly service. I just might order something else to eat. read more

Pretty nice pub -- we ate upstairs during our recent trip to London after a failed attempt to get dinner at 4-5 other pubs due to the pre-theatre crowds. Here, I was introduced to my first steak and ale pie which was very good. Otherwise it's a pretty average, more quiet pub. read more

I wouldn't eat here again. We deiced to check this place because it was right by our hotel and the downstairs pub seemed to be popping. Once we were seated upstairs, our waiter took our beer choices (of there were 2 and one of which was tapped out) and then left. We watched as he walked around and chatted with his coworkers for a long time before coming back with the beers and taking our order. The beer was horrendous! It tasted like drinking copper pennies. I tried to flag down our waiter for a glass of water, no luck. He just continued to walk right past us. I was able to get another waiter to bring us water. Our food came out and it was so-so. The gravy was watery and meat unseasoned. Midway through our meal, I was out of water and tried again to flag down our waiter, with no avail. Another waitress saw me waving around and I was able to get her to get me a glass of water. Please keep in mind that we were sitting right next to the bar where all the waiters were walking back and forth. I even watched as OUR waiter turn people away from the restaurant even tho there were a number of empty tables. I did not have the best experience with the food, service, or beer. Hopefully, the downstairs beers were much better than the selection they had upstairs. If asked to recommend this place to a friend, I wouldn't. read more

Came in tonight. Just landed in London, wanted a couple of drinks and a pub meal. The place is busy, full of locals which is always a good sign- right? We'd been before too on another trip so thought it was the perfect choice. We couldn't have been more wrong. We ordered drinks and dinner. Drinks were fine, but after an hour and 20 minutes we finally got our meal. Cold, sparse, pretty terrible all around. We at first thought we would just suck it up, but after the third bite of cold food we were totally annoyed. We talked to the bar staff, they were helpful and got approval to refund the meal. We asked, since it was now 10:15pm, to re order our meal as we weren't sure where else we could eat as kitchens were closed around town. They asked their manager- who agreed to request a new meal. 35 minutes later the meal comes out. Still sparse, still cool to the touch. Pretty unimpressed all the way around. Stick to drinking here folks- the kitchen has no interest in your satisfaction or enjoyment of a meal! read more

V. near Charing Cross station so convenient, and I only ever come in here outside the key peak hours of lunchtime and 5-7pm weekdays if I can help it, as the pub area downstairs is quite small - so gets packed quickly. But it is worth trying to get a seat if possible, or coming at the weekend, as the food is quite reasonably priced and tasty enough, and drinks are fairly average price. My other half likes the Sherlock Holmes theme so it keeps him happy when he doesn't really like central pubs. I didn't know about the upstairs though - thanks Templar! read more

Husband and I stopped for a quick bite and we were pleasantly surprised. Broccoli and Stilton Cheese soup was excellent. The soup had a prefect, creamy texture with just a hint of Stilton bite. Our fish and chips were hot were they arrived at the table, perfectly done. Tea and a pint hit the spot. The best we've had in London this trip.
