We have eaten at this Shields and enjoyed the food. This was the 2nd time I've ordered food for a small gathering. (20 people). This Shields location has so much to offer. The food is fresh, they don't skimp on salad toppings in their full tray antipasto. The staff is always so nice and helpful. Whether it's menu selections or computing costs on larger orders, they go the extra mile. To get good food and good service in one, it has been a pleasant experience. I haven't tried other locations so I can't comment. The owner at Troy often answers the phone or is available if I need help planning the menus for my groups. Shields is larger than i even expected! Service was great and friendly - he talked and tried to get to know you on a personal level. The food was hot, fresh, and came out super fast!! Very family friendly atmosphere and great for large parties! Ambiance was a little loud but i think that was to be expected with a large facility and kids and families everywhere. I will say the food tastes better dining in! We only ever carried out until this visit. We will definitely be making more dine-in experiences from now on. The breadsticks - like Olive Garden but BETTER! Bigger, softer. Zucchini sticks - they could probably be smaller in size. I think i was thinking more like fries, but good nonetheless. My first time going to Shield's for a "normal" sit down dinner (last time was a banquet, years ago). Gentleman waiting on us was ok, seemed distracted, kept forgetting stuff/not bringing things we needed, i.e. condiments, silverware, refills. Otherwise, our food was alright. I had a Caesar salad with steak, and it was good, nothing to write home about. I could have used a little more steak. First of all, we love going to Shields for lunch. The pizza plus is a great value & so tasty. Went there today & were greeted by the crabby, rude woman with the short grey hair. This is not the first time she's been this way, but this is the third time that the folks I was with mentioned her demeanor. So, after telling a manager the last time I was in, and he obviously didn't care, I'm mentioning it here. I know that it's hard to find help but really do you want to not at least mention their behavior to them & maybe they could at least try to be friendly. It's been about a year since we have came here... shortly after they switched management. We were giving them another try because service had been spotty. We asked to get started in the bar (low table since I use a wheelchair). There were only 3 low tables but it was perfect because it was by the open window. After getting seated no one came for about ten minutes but it's OK because we were not in a rush. The waitress approached us and asked if we sat ourselves. I said no and we had menus. She said well we have a reservation for these seats. Then she walked away and another employee asked if I could move into a booth. My husband pointed to my wheelchair and said no she can not climb up into a booth. Then they decided to seat the people in any of the many other tables. The salad definitely looked like it was from yesterday so I asked for a new one. The sub was good. Took waitress a long time to check on us so we ended up getting up grabbing our own mustard etc. I doubt we will come back.... maybe give it another year. We use to come here once or twice a month. I've been to Shield's pizza before, just never this location. I was meeting a group of friends here for a birthday get together, and it was pretty good. Parking can get a little crazy here, but nothing that is awful. Since my friends wanted a meat lovers pizza and I don't do pork, I ended up getting a chicken sandwich instead. We also ordered breadsticks and fried zucchini which was pretty good. (better than fried okra, if you ask me.) Service was a bit touch and go, but nothing really awful. As a Missouri girl who has never had Detroit style pizza, I've been looking forward to trying it while at work for 3 months in the area. I tried three other places and was disappointed in those. After a Google search for best in Troy, I tried Shield's. Upon arrival, everyone was very friendly. We sat at a nice table with an open window and enjoyed that. I told Kelsey we were looking for a Detroit experience and she immediately said we wanted the original square Shield's Super. We also got a Michigan Harvest salad to share between the two of us. The pizza wars incredible and exactly what we were looking for. The salad was also great. Kelsey was friendly, attentive and helpful our entire dinner. I used to go to this establishment with some regularity, but I haven't been here in years...and definitely not since they did their big renovation. It certainly looks different, but we sat outside, so I didn't get to see much. We went at lunch time on a weekday, so my wife and I split a couple of things from their lunch menu - the caesar salad and the pretzel sticks. Both were good, but nothing spectacular. I didn't see them on the menu but asked for them and then the server said "they're making more so just ask" when she gave us some but I don't know if that was to imply ours had been sitting out, which could be why they tasted stale. The service was lacking. It took 30 minutes to even get the opportunity to place our order, which was stressful. The bartender Jen is AWSOME, although the manager/waitress there named Amber I have health conserns with. I have watched her on multiple occasions making bloody Mary's and she has put the olives and pickles on the unsanitary server bar to grab more veggies to put on the toothpick then put them in a customers drink! This is a new favorite find in the Detroit area. Today is actually taco Tuesday and they have great deals on tacos but I wanted to try the pizza. They have multiple types of pizzas and I went for the deep dish square. It was awesome! Fresh ingredients and very good. They actually have a huge menu with soups, salads, sandwiches, wings, and bigger entrees. I was pleasantly surprised by the reasonable prices and specials. It's cold out and it snowed earlier. Seems like a good night for pizza, right. Been by and heard about this place thousands of times before. Decided to give it a whirl. We were seated a freshly dirty table, how nice is that. No one has come to take our order or clean our table yet. Order a chicken Parmesan, added sauce since some folks said they tend to skimp on the red sauce here. Order a regular Greek salad and a veggie small square with added garlic, spinach, yellow peppers and chicken too. The Greek salad was smaller than I was thinking for it feed two of us. Mixed greens. Cucumbers I could have done without, not necessary for a Greek to me. It was good overall and generous with the feta. Behind the curtain is a private party. I hear those horns for birthdays or NYE, the kazoo sounding ones. The square crust is quite thick and doughy. The sauce is rather sparse on my veggie too. The chicken is dried out like jerky on both pizzas. $3 for adding on dried chicken on my veggie, super. The chicken Parmesan is okay, they added more sauce. The sauce is chunky. I ate the top off the pizza on my other pieces, since the doughy thick dough wasn't doing it for me and it had little to no flavor to it. The crushed pepper helped get it down. Our table is once again dirty and messy on our departure too. No clean spot to sign the receipt. read more

Yes, I am giving a Detroit pizza icon an average rating because it earned it. I have eaten pizza in many states, lots of famous places, and award winners in the nation contests. The pizza I had wasn't the best Hawaiian, they call it Polynesian, not even close. Others in the group like theirs but none talked about it being the best. The J. L. Hudson salad was a take out and tried the next day. Its size said it was worth the price and could have feed 2-3. It was the worst Maurice salad I have ever had. The garbage disposer got at least half of it and it is almost a sin to me wasting food. The service and willingness to allow large groups helped me add 1 star. But if I want Detroit style pizza, I will stick to Buddy's. read more

HUGE KUDOS and shoutout to Shields! I placed an online order to be delivered for a large pizza with cheese on the whole thing, and toppings on just one side (so the kiddos could have only cheese). Unfortunately, toppings covered all of it I called, and they couldn't have been more apologetic!! Rock Solid detroit-style pizza in the top 10 of my favorite Square pizzas. The Gold Medal has a solid kick to it that is not for the timid but well worth it. THe parking is ample and they've got a great dinging area + bar. -1 star because carry out food has been stone-cold at times and it's always a gamble ordering "to-go" so I simply stopped doing it. Classic Detroit style pizza and I am a huge pizza connoisseur. My boyfriend and I decided to try Shields because we have passed it a ton of times but never tried it before. The first thing I noticed is, the pizza slices are huge!! One slice was the size of my hand! The small pizza came with 4 slices and the large had 8. If I'm being honest, this isn't my favorite Detroit style pizza. I though the dough was great but my pizza was lacking sauce. The lack of sauce and musty pizza did not make me the biggest fan. I think I might just have to try a different type of pizza because I didn't love it. I tried the grilled chicken parmesan pizza I also tried prime rib sandwich. The au jus that came with the sandwich was perfection. It was so delicious and juicy and the fries with the sandwich were delicious. Overall, not my favorite place, but not bad either.
