My coworker ordered the burger and said it was really good. Next time i want to try the chicken fried steak and onion rings. Service was excellent. We drove all the way from San Antonio to try a different restaurant, but it was closed. I looked up food places and this one came up as a "hidden gem". I wish it had stayed hidden from me. While the mushrooms were hot and delicious, the rest of the food that came after was not. We had the meatloaf special, meatloaf was over seasoned and dry, mashed potato's were as if they just took a dry baked potato and made it look like mashed potatoes, very dry. Bacon avocado cheeseburger... they forgot the cheese, we added a cold piece, then they were not added a very small ring of mayo and no mustard, so I had to ask for condiments to add to my burger. The patty was unseasoned and tasted previously frozen that layed on top of 1 wilted piece of lettuce, and tomato and a smear of avocado. What a treat of a find! Not even a burger fan but decided to listen to the locals and best bang for your buck! I am so incredibly full and didn't even finish it! The juicy burger was amazing would HIGHLY recommend! I'd probably even try it without cheese it was that good! The bread was toasted and just thick enough not overly thick! The servers I dealt with were above kind and advice given ! I genuinely felt so welcome and not annoyed by over visits! Ease and comfort is what this place is about! The only down fall was when I walked in and was unsure if it was self seating order at the bar or what, but thankfully a server m came and told me to sit wherever and that she'd be right with me! I arrived around noon and it was pretty crowded, but there was a table available. I was in the mood for chicken fried steak. It was good, but a little over breaded. The meat was well tenderized, and was obviously prepared there, not some frozen patty. The plate was served with fries, which were good the tea was really good and fresh. I also got a piece of German chocolate cake from the dessert cooler by the register that was very good. The parking lot does fill up. read more

We stopped in today at Shifter's American Grill. We have been here maybe a dozen times before and I always ask myself why we don't come more. It is always very good. Fried zucchini is delicious. Be careful though, it's hot. Their ranch dressing is good. I had a grilled chicken burger and added bacon and avocado. My husband had a Bacon Avocado Burger. Seriously both, so good! We both went on and on about how good the flavor was. Curly fries had a good crisp and flavor. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. The room is decorated fun. Honestly it's a 3 and a half but I rounded up. The food is good not great. Service was good not great. But what got me was it's a bar and grill and there was literally not beer on tap. Hmmm? On my innumerable road trips throughout the great state of Texas, I find myself repeating a mantra coined by the inimitable Yelper Don B. of Kerrville: "Always hoping for serendipity." When passing through a town unfamiliar to me, I take a cursory glance at Yelp and end up dining at some quirky, family-owned hole in the wall. Will my Yelp brethren steer me wrong (e.g., The Local Fix in Uvalde -- scathing Ryan M. review forthcoming) or will serendipity prevail and lead me to a hidden gem? In the case of Shifters American Grill, the Yelp consensus is accurate; this is top-notch down-home cooking, comfort food given the respect it deserves. Followers of mine know that I hold onion rings to a high standard. I expect nothing less than a shatteringly crisp batter speckled with cracked pepper and onions that teeter between soft/caramelized and crisp/astringent. The ones at Shifters (eight to an order for $5.99) rose to that standard, ranking among the best I have tried in recent memory. My dad and I both noted that not one drop of cooking oil was present in the basket, proving that the fry cook at Shifters is indeed a master of the Maillard reaction. Burgers, chicken tenders, and various sandwiches sounded tempting, but I went with the chicken-fried steak dinner, a wise choice. The sprawling steak -- pounded out about 1.5 inches thick -- featured a tender cut of good-quality cube steak, a craggy crust, and a rich, homemade cream gravy resplendent with glistening meat drippings in the roux (no ersatz gravy cubes or powders here). The "loaded" mashed potatoes would have benefited from more cheese, bacon, and chives, but the potatoes themselves were smooth (not *too* smooth like instant mashers), buttery, and unquestionably homemade. Alas, the appeal of warm undressed lettuce and mealy tomatoes on the plate failed to resonate with me. The vegetation was likely intended as a garnish or perhaps an attempt to brighten the dish, but I would have been happier without it. Methinks I protest too much, for this is Texas; ignore that vegetable matter and give me more fried foods smothered in cream gravy! I typically visit an establishment a minimum of three times prior to writing a review, but I'm not sure when I will return to Pleasanton for a followup meal. Will your experience match or exceed mine? I make no guarantees, but I have learned that if a small-town diner can execute the basics (onion rings and chicken-fried steaks in this case), then it will likely succeed elsewhere. If you don't trust my learned opinion (in which case, shame on you), then consider the opinion of our Governor, the Honorable Greg Abbott. He was apparently so impressed that he bestowed upon Shifters a signed letter of recognition for its "amazing hospitality" and "outstanding food." How did I end up at such a place, you ask? Found this spot on our way back from the Gulf and it did not disappoint. We arrived right when it opened and after about 30 minutes, this place was packed! Now I know why. I loved the chicken fried steak, burgers were excellent, staff were friendly. What more do you need on your wayside stop to indulge the palate and refill for the long journey ahead? This place. First time trying this place. I know this is late but I really needed to give this place kudos! My mom and I split the chicken fried steak, yep that big. It was delicious and cooked perfectly with excellent flavor. When we got there we ordered fried zucchini. Very tasty. We ate them all. My dad had the chicken sandwich, he is a very good eater and could not finish the beast. Now about the service. Hmm how should I put this... Phenomenally friendly. Ummm where do I start. I'm giving it 2 stars because the bottle beer was cold and the water tasted good. However, we thought ordering the grilled chicken plate was safe but no. Chicken was a small little thing that could have passed for salmon at a glance and it was over cooked. The asparagus that came with it was over cooked and the little bit of super chopped salad seemed to be an unexpected garnish. We watched one of the servers stand on the bar to get napkins from an overhead shelf then hop down and go about her way. In a Covid crazy obsessed world you would think she would have cleaned an sanitized the bar afterward. Instead servers would come up and place their arms and hands where the dirty shoes had been. I didn't expect much from a little town on a short overnight but come on have a little more pride in your service. I feel weird saying a burger place was flawless, but this was. We had great service! My boyfriend's beer was cold, and my tea was delicious. I ordered a side salad to start, and he got some chips and queso. The salad was fresh with good ingredients. I had it with wing sauce, instead of dressing, which I love, and they were happy to do that. The queso was so tasty, also! For meals, my boyfriend got a double burger with fries. Simple, but done perfectly. I got a burger, except asked if they could do grilled chicken, instead, with burger toppings. A small upcharge that I was happy to pay. I got it as a lettuce wrap, no mayo. So, yes, you can eat healthily, here. The chicken was cooked perfectly. Broccoli as the side, which was a perfect texture. The waitress never made me feel like an annoyance, even though I'm sure I probably was after my order, but she remained one of the nicest servers ever. It was kinda pack and our food took awhile, but we got our drinks and wow! The strawberry lemonade was amazing!
