Looking for a quick snack and stopped here and wow pleasantly surprised! They have bbq plates and brisket sandwiches for 14.99. The bbq, okra and corn were delicious. The corn was as roasted and blew me away because I had not seen that before as a side. I really enjoyed the fixins bar. See pics. The place was nice and so were the workers. I really wanted to like this place, but it just was not good. The food was subpar and definitely not worth the money. Everything tasted off and lacked the flavor I expected from a barbecue restaurant. It was disappointing from start to finish. The atmosphere was fine, but that is about the only good thing I can say. The food came out tasting like it had been sitting for a while, and nothing had that fresh smoked flavor you look for in barbecue. Yes, they are open on Mondays despite what their website says. Anyhow, I don't think the price fits the servings. It wasn't life changing or even Top 5 BBQ for me but that's okay! It was easy to get to on route way elsewhere and definitely had better options than some places before and after it. Bottom line: Good food, a tad pricey, nice people. Turkey - super moist and delicious. I'm so picky about turkey so I didn't order it my husband did. After his first bite he was like "You gotta try this!". Worth it. Baby back ribs - Good for sure! Not the best not the worst. Like super juicy on one side and then dry as a bone meat on the other. Would order again but might try St. Louis style. Sides - BBQ Beans, Mac (for my husband), and Cole slaw. He says the Mac was standard good. I think the beans were beans. The cole slaw however was traditional cookout style, stringy not chopped as it should be! Delicious! Avoid this stop! We passed Smolik's Smokehouse and should have kept driving. The food was a major disappointment and a waste of money. All the meat tasted old, dry, and not fresh at all. Looks like reviewers either love it or hate it...obviously I'm on the 'loved it side. We saw about 20 worker's tricks in the parking lot, so it's popular with various contractors! We stopped for lunch and I got a chopped brisket sandwich and my wife got a pulled pork sandwich. We both got the beans. Both meats were moist and delicious, and the buns were soft and fresh. Beans had chunks of peppers and sausage and were very good. Food prepared in front of you and the line moved quickly. Texas is a big state, both in geographic terms and other contexts (think GDP, etc.) It is also a scenic state ideal for travel via old school road trippin'. It is my preferred means of intrastate travel. Since I now live in Corpus Christi, and much enjoy the amenities of bigger cities such as San Antonio or Austin, Choke Canyon Bar-B-Q has become a go-to pitstop going to or coming from those areas. It's a great little Texas barbecue restaurant that makes for an ideal break while traveling. Not only does it have great "Q," but it is also connected to a very nice gas station with the same name. From experience I can also say that it is ran by some of the friendliest Texans you'll ever meet. I often stop here on roadtrips with my dog. There is a lot of space behind the restaurant for discretely taking him out. Occasionally, meat scraps are dropped on their way from the smoker to the restaurant, and if we are lucky, it ends up being a nice little unwasted treat for my boy to eat. My husband & I stopped in seemed a bit pricey but after getting our food and trying it, the price was worth it! Our brisket sandwiches were stuffed! They ask you if you want moist (more fatty) or lean (less fat), it's sliced right in front of you. We ordered 1 of each. The meat is kept in a warmer right behind them, great idea! I'm very picky about potato salad & loved it! The fryer wasn't on & we wanted to try the okra but it wasn't available so we just sat down to eat. Minutes later a young woman comes out with the okra, loved it! Very thankful. I'd love to try the alligator bites next! The ambience is not bad, something my husband would do if he had a bbq place. By the outside it looks like a great place to eat but this was not the case. There was flys and gnats flying everywhere. The chopped bbq sandwich looked worst than a sloppy jo. My dad ate half of it. The sausage sandwich did not have that bbq crunch on the outside it taste more like the boiled sausage. The dessert display was not appealing at all. This place is situated on Interstate 37 just outside of Three Rivers. I have been stopping at the truck stop next door for a while but we finally decided to stop at the BBQ place.
