Perfectly adequate for an overnight stay, as my family was just passing through on a road trip. I booked a "King bed suite with river view" from a third party travel site. We were situated on the ground floor of building A, near the end. Our view was mostly the service road that runs behind the hotel, but we did get a glimpse of the river, so I guess that counts. The room was large and "clean". I definitely believe it was cleaned prior to our stay, however, the carpet is old and stained, and furniture chipping away. Not really a big deal since we only spent about 12 hours in the room, mostly sleeping. Linens were fresh and the bed was comfy. We were also able to have our dog stay with us, which is one of the reasons why I booked to this location. This Shilo Inns is extremely dated, though the property is in the midst of an upgrade. When we arrived for check in, the main entrance was inaccessible because they were redoing it, so it took me a minute to figure out where I could enter on the side. Signage would have been helpful! The check-in process was quick and the man at the counter was super nice and accommodating. Other than that, we had no interaction with the staff. Breakfast was included in our stay (5a-9a daily). Nothing fancy, your typical free continental breakfast at a low/ mid-range hotel: coffee, tea, little plastic container juices, fruit, bagels and muffins, some cereals, oatmeal, etc. Enough to get some food in our bellies before we hit the road. read more

This was the nicest Shilo we've ever stayed at, and we've stayed at several in the Northwest. Our room was typical Shilo, meaning, very spacious with comfy beds, and clean. The front desk ladies were all friendly, as were the staff in their lounge. And what a great view of the dam from the lounge! We were there on a Sunday night, so we had the pool all to ourselves. The pool area was very well maintained, too. They have a decent complimentary breakfast to get your day started. We were just passing through, but would love to come back for a few days to explore the Columbia River Gorge more. read more

Planning a trip out to Hood River to visit the wineries I needed a place to stay, and rolled the dice on Priceline which put me in this place. I didn't know what to expect as there have been some not too favorable reviews on Yelp and also on other sites for this location. If you are from the big city your expectations maybe shot down hard coming here, not being used to not being in a nicer establishment, all I needed was one night to stay and sleep during my rounds into this part of the State. Getting here was pretty simple, as the location is very close to the highway, and pulling up, it's right next to a Chevron you really can't miss it, right off the highway exit, bam.. and tons of parking.. like tons!! When you get in this place, the reception area feels like an old style lodge, very wooden, with some colorful tacky carpet, like you have been whisked away back to the 80's in one of those National Lampoon Vacation movies, it's really out of date, it maybe hard for you to adjust your internal system to this! After my confirmation check in, I was given a key, a real key, you know, the little flat metal thing with indistinguishable teeth that goes into a door, it's this old fashioned here, no swipe cards, and you better not lose this key, or you are not getting into your room. The room we were in was seperated from the main lobby structure, and luckily it was close to the entrance door, as I had lot's of luggage that needed to get in this room. When you enter the room, after wrestling with the key to open the lock, you will either accept it, or cringe at what you see in this hotel room. As I said above, like a bad memory from yesteryear is the color patterns, of a place that needs an entire makeover, but it is still liveable. There's an old tube tv (wow.... they still use these?), there is a good sized fridge, queen size bed (whch felt like a twin), a coffee table with two chairs, and long cupboard, mirror, seperate area for the washroom with a sink seperate from the toilet and bathtub. In all, for what you get, not bad, it was clean, as we did look around (always fearful of bed bugs!) but for what we got for it, we accepted it as is. When you stay here you do get a voucher for the next morning's breakfast which is in the restaurant in the lobby, and you get a choice of: 1) bicsuit, gravy and fresh fruit cup, 2) pancake, egg and 2 sausage links, or 3) scrambled eggs, ham and toast. It's not the regular continental breakfast here.. a lot better, I did not try this, but if you end up here... they do give you food. The wifi was wonky for most of the time we were in the room, I stayed for one night and it was ok, as just a place to stay, sleep, and go. No bites, so it's safe, and easily accessible. read more

i saw the recent reviews on this place and felt compelled to comment. We stopped here to eat on Wed. 11/24 on our way down to Sunriver. My friends rave about their restaurant. They have a cook from New Orleans. I agree with the previous posts that unfortunately the place was freezing, their heater had broken. I was really glad that we weren't planning to stay. The meal was good - not great. I'd stop there again as it is convenient. I had the catfish and my friends had the etoufee. The cook was accommodating and the service was timely. Overall a good place to stop for a bite in the middle of nowhere but other than that - not sure I'd want to stay there. read more

Hotel is OK but older and in a run down area along the industrial part of the river. The walls are paper thin, so we had to try listen to the neighbor's dog barking and could practically join in on their conversations. Coffee is horrible and the "free" breakfast is a joke. Overall, a fairly decent place to spend the night. There are a bunch of negative reviews, that while they have some merit, this isn't a dive like some make it out to be. Check in was easy and friendly. Yes, this is an older property and they still use actual keys, so what? There are things that need to be improved in the hotel though. The carpeting in the hall to building A really needs replacing. The door to my room didn't seem the most secure, but it had a deadbolt and I didn't feel unsafe. The room was huge!! I think most newer properties have rooms 1/3 smaller than this. My room had a slider and small porch area that overlooked the dam and river. The bed was pretty comfortable, but I could tell it's approaching the end of it's lifespan. There is some noise that you can hear from the trains traveling the Gorge and a bit of highway noise sometimes. The heater/a/c unit, personally, I'd like the fan to run the whole time as it makes for a better sleeping experience for me. The room was clean. It was quiet when I was there, no one going up the stairs, or running up the hallway and I'm guessing no one in the room above me, which I'm grateful for. Breakfast is included with your stay. Biscuits and Gravy,or Cinnamon pancake, or eggs and ham and a really small juice. I guess the best thing is that it's "free". I ate mine and it was OK, but I'd probably head down the road and have a more customizable breakfast elsewhere. Would I stay again, maybe, but I think Shilo in general is a little more expensive than what I have in my mind for what you get. read more

I typically reserve my gripes about businesses to family and friends but my experience this morning at Choice's newest property cannot go unaddressed. Upon check in, staff at the Shilo Inn in The Dalles, Oregon informed us that the property was changing hands and becoming a Choice Hotels propety after August 1. As such, we were fortunate that we would have meal tickets for our entire party because we booked prior to July 31. It was further explained that all reservations after August 1 would receive only two meal tickets per reservation regardless of the size of the party. I did not realize this gravity of this short-sighted policy until the next morning as flustered waitstaff had to inform forest fire evacuees that they did not have enough meal tickets for their entire party. Whereas Shilo's meal ticket system would have fed everybody, Choice's myopic and profit-based system does not, adding further insult to injury. Evacuees are not staying at the Shilo-turned-Choice hotel because they want to; they are staying there because they have to In the interest of humanitarian aid, I encourage Choice Hotels to revisit this policy at The Dalles, OR Shilo Inn in the short term and, at minimum, provide enough meals for guests those who are facing the possible loss of their home. It is truly the least Choice Hotels can do. read more

Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else. The front desk staff was friendly and that's the only positive I can say about this hotel. I was there for work so I didn't have a choice. There was a gym if you wanna call a treadmill a gym. I was pretty sure if I touched it I would've contracted some sort of disease it was covered in decades worth of sweat and filth. My room had new carpet and a newer TV but everything else was in the 70s. There was a giant gap under my door so hall light came filtering in during the night as well as flies during the day who stayed all night. Seriously the flies were disgusting and I couldn't stop thinking about how they were probably landing on me while I slept. Keep on driving by this place. read more

More like a 1/2 star. Here on business and it was the better of the two hotels Egencia offered in the area. Pros: Great views and easy access to the hwy, restaurant staff was professional and kind. Cons: Incredibly rude front desk staff, small rooms, outdated decor, outdated fixtures, water will go from ice cold to scalding hot in the shower, spider webs all over the ceiling, walls are thin so forget about sleeping, and restaurant is marginal at best. Biggest con: The only channel the hotel staff plays in the lobby is Fox News. It's too bad this is such a shabby place, I was hoping to come back to the region for pleasure later in the year and will need a place to say. read more

This is an interesting place. The building is old and contents and decor outdated. While the room and furnishings were old, the sheets and towels were clean. That is the only good. The breakfast coupon is very limited to three choices, one choice is, one pancake, one egg, and two sausages with one beverage. I ate in the restaurant but when I asked about taking my wife's to the room, It would be a one dollar charge. Now at night when relaxing on the deck enjoying a drink, the bar staff decided to come out to smoke and swear. After a few f-bombs by staff, we just went back to the room. Wifi in the room was useless. Wired connection worked but died the last night I was there. Had to use phone as a hotspot for connectivity. A coworker took a picture of her first floor window. The latch was broke and a stick was being used to keep it closed. We will not return and will recommend others do not stay here. read more

This place isn't a fleabag motel by any means, but I'm not sure that the Motel 6 or Super 8 wouldn't be nicer. Like others, I'll break it down into the pros and cons. Pros: It's right off the highway and easy to find. You get a free breakfast (if you can call it that). There is a microwave and fridge in the room, and a computer/printer in the lobby. Free internet that works seemingly well. Free parking. Cons: SUPER outdated. Haven't stayed at a hotel that looked like this since the 80s. Giant stuffed elk in the lobby. Spa was broken; I ask when it would be fixed (since I really was looking forward to hot tubbing) - answer was "sometime in the next few weeks." Restuarant service was awful (9 booths -- 7 were dirty and 2 were full. Took 10 minutes to be sat, 20 minutes to be served by canned fruit cocktail...during which a busser wearing a hole-filled t-shirt and with his butt crack hanging out FINALLY cleaned the tables nearby), checking in took about 25 minutes and went ridiculously slowly. Depending on your room location, the dam might be loud. Keys for the doors are clunky and require much jigglying. No conditioner in the rooms. Again, the place isn't awful, but don't book it thinking that it is going to be anywhere near a chain hotel, or cute local inn and suites. read more

We are here for kids' 3 days swim meet. After realizing Fairfield suite doesn't really have separate living space, I checked the limited choices in town and chose this place for 3-room suite. Our kids go to sleep before 8:30pm so enclosed and separate living space is very important to us. Shilo Inn is certainly not the most modern facility but our suite has a huge living room with jacuzzi in it. One bedroom has a king bed and the other has two twins. The sofa in living room also is a pullout couch. There are patio table chairs on a moderate patio facing spacious grass area with trail leading to the river. Our unit is end unit closest to the river so it has a open view. Staff is nice. Complimentary breakfast has 3 choices that our boys enjoyed. We enjoyed the spacious set up of the 3-room suite. read more

I found this hotel to be very cutting edge and modern...for 1985; it hasn't been touched since. The entire facility is a time capsule from the mid-80s and the owners don't appear to have much budget or interest in maintenance or updating. The room was clean, but run down. The popcorn ceiling in the bathroom is falling down. The carpets appear original and show their age. There's chipped and worn paint throughout. The entire facility is neglected. The wifi is a joke. The continental breakfast was absolutely terrible. I usually stay at the Comfort Inn accross the street, but thought I'd try the Shilo out this time. Very disappointed. read more

Clean hotel but don't expect a lot. We reserved a double queen standard room and by the time we checked in they were out, so we got a free upgrade to a double queen suite. This so called suite just looked like a typical double queen so I'm not sure why it was classified as a suite. Free coffee 24/7. And free coffee in the room. We stayed here over Memorial day weekend with a deal I got on Portland Perks. Check in was a breeze and we had a nice view of the dam from our room. The room wasn't anything spectacular, but it was clean and had a microwave and a refrigerator. The beds were comfortable, but the pillows were awful! They were so big, that it was more comfortable to sleep without one. The complimentary breakfast was decent. We got to choose from 3 different items and they were all very filling, my only complaint about breakfast was the canned fruit. It was gross and all tasted the same. Our main reasons for staying here was because we had plans to go wine tasting and we also had a dog. The hotel was pet-friendly and wineries were close. Overall, it was a great stay! read more

STOP HERE AND READ THIS REVIEW. Do not stay here-The Dalles, despite it's size, is full of other much, much better places to stay at almost identical prices, if not cheaper. I'm not usually one to publicly criticize an establishment of any kind, though I do not think I have particularly high standards, so most places that are a bit rough-around-the-edges don't bother me. The Shilo in the Dalles is not rough-around-the-edges, it's a dump. I'm hoping a negative review will do something to prompt corporate to at least make this place habitable, and SAFE. The hotel has not been updated since becoming a Shilo in the 1980s. Original TVs, floors, and decor. That is something I can deal with if they maintained it. They don't appear to really do so heavily. The entire place is unclean. Despite being dated and dirty, I feared for my safety in this place. We arrived fairly late in the evening, so I was just hoping to go to the restaurant in the hotel to get something to take back to our room. When I walked into the restaurant at about 7, (not even the bar), rap music played at deafening volumes, and several gentlemen with fully unbuttoned shirts and probably a couple neck tattoos did not look very pleased to see me. Keep in mind, this was in the evening. I can't speak to the level of safety in the morning. However, it was still light out. I'm guessing a group of fellows who were not up to any good decided to make the restaurant their hub that night. Maybe it was a one-time thing, but I suspect not. The Shilo is a dump with sketchy security (at best), filled with dated and dirty room. I recommend The Celilo Inn. We toured it while in town in an attempt to switch hotels, trying to get away from the Shilo. THAT is an amazing place, the Shilo is quite the opposite. read more

I just phoned the Shilo Inn and spoke to Heather the Manager. She was so sweet and helpful I felt compelled to yelp about it! Sooooo this review is only on the customer service and not on the lodging itself. I think customer service should also be rewarded on yelp! True story. I explained to the gentlemen who answered the phone that I was traveling with 2 girlfriends and we wanted enough space for 3 of us to sleep comfortably. He politely told me it was his 3rd day but he wanted to get the Manager so all my questions could be answered. The Manager got on the phone, I explained my needs and she and politely said she has a room which is not advertised on their website that would work for us. The set up is as follows: it's just like the Jr King Suite which has a king bed, living room area with a sleep sofa, deck/balcony, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and a wet bar BUT this room has another private bedroom with 2 twin beds. Whoooo hooo! Perfect. Heather explained there are only two of these rooms on the property. One is located on the first floor and has a jacuzzi in the room and the other is on the second floor w/out a jacuzzi. I opted for the 1st floor not because of the jacuzzi but because I prefer 1st floor. Heather was eager to please her customer and she definitively did just that, she took my reservation by getting my cc # over the phone and explained nothing would be charged until we checked in. I shall review the Shilo's lodging after my stay in March. read more

This is a gross hotel. I have stayed here for 7 years and the state of decline is beyond reason. The health department should keep tabs on them in my view. Not good; certainly not for the rates. However even if they charged $10 ... I would not stay again ... yep ... that nasty. The only good thing about it was the staff were decent people. I felt bad for them having to work there. read more

First of all, I don't think it's right Shilo still advertises they have a hot tub and a sauna; both have been non-operational for months. The front staff appears to have a scripted response to the non-operating hot tub and spa when they give you the directions to your room. The rooms themselves are okay, although they are outdated. (old tv and bedspreads) As part of our stay we did receive complementary breakfast certificates, unfortunately once we were seated, it took over an hour for our breakfast to be served. The most disgusting part of our my stay was when I had to use the restroom in the main lobby; one of the bathroom stalls was lined with boogers wiped on the wall-it was clear they had been there for a while. I was lured to stay at this place due to the beautiful view, but eventually I had to go back into the hotel, which was a HUGE disappointment. Affordable excellence; my foot!! read more

We normally stay at Cousin's, but they were all booked and so were most other hotels so we were forced to choose the Shilo Inn. As were leaving after our night's stay, we both agreed that a more fitting description would be the Sh!thole Inn. My first impression of the hotel was the god-awful smell as we walked into the lobby to check in. It was like walking into an old folks home. The property looks like it hasn't been updated one bit since it was built. Shilo should be ashamed to let their property degrade so much and not put one dime into it. The front desk people were curteous and got us our room. The room also smelled, but more like it had been sprayed with lysol. Neither of us used the shower, so I can't say whether or not the water pressure was good or not. The room was clean, had a large tv, and the air conditioner worked well. The bed was a queen, but seemed small for a queen. It wasn't fancy, but I got a decent nights sleep. I always bring my own pillow, which is good because their pillows are nothing to write home about. I did appreciate that it was nice and quiet because I have a hard time sleeping. Probably my biggest annoyance was when I was down in the little slot machine room and some low life was trying to sell junk to everyone in the room. I finally complained to the guy who came to attend to the machines, but by that time I'd gotten so annoyed that I no longer felt like being in there...plus the room was so hot I couldn't take it anymore. Pretty much the only cool spot was our room. The rest of the building (lobby, hallways, fitness room, bar and slot machine room) was hot as hell. The WiFi was not very strong and I finally gave up trying to use it. The free breakfast was one of three options. I chose the 1 cinnamon pancake, 1 egg, and 2 sausage links plus coffee. It was adequate, but not something I would ever pay to have. The fitness room included one out-of-service treadmill, one eliptical, one bike, and one weight machine. All the signs said there was a spa/sauna, but it was nowhere to be found. The view of the river and damn were fine considering the area. Right next door is a gas station and mini mart, which is probably where the low lifes come from. They did have an outdoor pool, which was enjoyable on such a hot day. read more

We stayed at the end of July hoping the poos would be open during our stay. Unfortunately it was down for maintenance. They do not have a spa here but the website says they do. The fitness facility is kindof sad. They had a treadmill, bike, elliptical and 1 weight machine. The boys are separate from the ladies fitness room. So I can only speak for the women's side. Breakfast is ok but not very filling for bigger appetites. The pros of Shilos inn- close to the river, you can walk down to the rocks really easily. The lounge is pretty good. Service at the lounge is decent. Wifi is available and free. The beds are comfortable and they provide plenty of linens. We like to try different places out so we might stay here in a pinch but not if we have other options. read more

We stayed in a standard queen room with a view of the parking lot. The A/C unit was extremely loud which I guess can be good to block outside noise but a little bit too much for me. The bathroom had several carpenter ants crawling around which I didn't really enjoy and the tile had some mold on it. Front desk was nice and restaurant was ok with a pretty good view. Overall, it definitely needs upgrades but you get what you pay for I guess. read more

The Good Points: Scottie at the front desk was absolutely delightful at check in. She took time to explain everything and, because of my allergies, went out of her way to pick a room that was least likely to have had pets in it. Top notch service! Breakfast was way above average for a hotel freebie because it's an actual restaurant, not just stuff in wrappers. Guests get to choose from 3 breakfast options. I had a massive pancake with scrambled eggs and sausage. The food was surprisingly tasty. The Bad Points: The restaurant's coffee was beyond horrible. Not even close to enough beans used - barely brown tinted water. This is Oregon - Oregon knows good coffee so no excuse for a sub-par brew. Do yourself a favor: have some juice and get coffee elsewhere. The room and bed were okay, but the pillow was a too-fat lumpy disaster that gave me a sore neck and a bad night's sleep. The tub needed to be re-caulked. Hallways smelled musty and lobby was full of cigarette smell even though it's a nonsmoking hotel. Bottom Line: If it wasn't for the good points, I would have rated it lower. The hotel is badly in need of renovation - way past due. If you need a place to sleep for a night, fine, but bring your own pillow. If you are looking for a vacation destination, keep looking. read more

This place is a sad, dilapidated excuse of a hotel straight out of 1985. As previously noted, the entire property is shabby, dated, and unkept. Upon arrival, I was greeted by a homeless person at the lobby entrance and it just went downhill from there. My room was dirty, shabby, and depressing: it hadn't seen an ounce of maintenance since 1985. The pharaoh ants crawling on the furniture (and the bed) was the last straw. read more

This is one of the most neglected hotels I've stayed at in years which is hard to understand because it is in a great location with views of the Columbia river, the dam and the Highway 97 Bridge. Pros: (1) It has a restaurant. (2) It is in a great location. (3) It has wireless service. Con's: (1) Most every flat surface from hall walls to doors near decks need paint and repairs. (2) The rooms are small and overpriced. It cost me $100 night for a slightly larger room with two queens. (3) Bedding and pillows are marginal and the food in nothing to write home about. This is the only place that had rooms available on a Saturday. Not even Cascade Locks had rooms available... Or Hood River. Shilo here is tired. Rooms need an upgrade, stains on the bathroom walls, TVs aren't flat screen, you even get a room key... Linens are very tired, chairs are stained, seriously.... Put some money into refreshing the hotel. The restaurant is empty... No kidding, lousy food. Mcd's next door is a better option. I'm hearing some yahoo's TV blaring as I type this. Loved this place! The winds were too high for camping across the river so we opted for an indoor adventure and this exceeded our expectations. The two families in our party got neighboring rooms with balconies overlooking the pool. We explored the grounds and loved the location! The next morning we sampled a delicious complimentary breakfast and then took a dip in the cool and refreshing outdoor pool. No complaints! The restaurant staff was ill-equipped for a crowd at breakfast and warned us of a half hour wait but once we were seated the wait was over quickly and everyone was very nice. read more
