Ive had multiple great stays at the hotel itself and enjoy the pools thoroughly, enjoy the ambiance of the space, the gymnasium and the sanctuary. Unfortunately the cafe gets one star, the eggs and avocado I got last time was downright offensive. As in, this meal should not have been served/ left the kitchen. The avocado was rock hard, brown and unable to be mushed with a fork and $4, the eggs were greasy and burned brown. Oh no, this was disastrous, I returned the avocado as it was inedible and ate two bites of the burned eggs... over $12, really disappointing. read more

I had a fantastic stay at The Society Hotel. If you're into super fancy luxury hotels, maybe this isn't the place for you, but for the rest of you, read on. The design of the hotel is really neat - it's in a restored school building and they lean into that with lockers still in the hallway and things like that. I came here during the week while working so spent a lot of time just hanging out in the hotel lobby, which was very comfy and cozy with a fireplace going. The spa was really nice. Again, not huge or fancy, but a great value. With your stay you get one hour reserved per day (free), including the days you check in and out, and can also ask to soak additional times if there is space. On my first night, I had booked the last hour they're open, and they texted me saying I could come an hour early if I wanted since there was plenty of room. There's a warm pool and a cold plunge inside, as well as a sauna, and a hot tub outside. I was nervous it was going to be a strict one-hour time limit, but they didn't seem to care. Caveat though, I also did come during the week so it was probably less busy than average. I was cheap and stayed in one of the bunk rooms. They're like fancy hostel accommodations. I generally don't like hostels but I liked it here. The beds are super comfy and sturdy, linens and towels provided, and there are curtains around each bed, as well as a light switch, outlets, and a storage area at the head of the bed. The lights in the room turn off at 10 and it was very quiet the whole time I was here. There were probably only 5ish other people in the room though that could technically fit 24. There are ample bathrooms outside the room; they're all single bathrooms with their own showers and were very clean every time I used them. Access to the spa is the same, and I paid $35 a night, which was a crazy deal considering I saw local people coming just for the spa which is also $35 for a single hour if you're not staying here. I had never been to this area before, and I loved it! I took the Amtrak here from Portland (which was only $7!) and drops off less than a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Transportation options once you're in town are pretty limited, but there is a public shuttle system that's $1 a ride - I took it to nearby White Salmon one day for lunch and on the way back they just dropped me off right at the hotel. Bingen itself really isn't much, and not a ton of food options. White Salmon was just a tad bigger and really close. While I didn't make it there, looks like Hood River just across the bridge is a little more happening. I did eat in the hotel lobby a few times, and the food was fine, although breakfast was pretty overpriced. The evening happy hour with $9 cocktails/wine was good though! If you're looking for a fun/different experience, I really recommend The Society Hotel. I loved my midweek getaway here - and they offer discounts for weeknight stays! read more

I have come here probably about 7-8 times over the years. Overall these have been positive experiences. I love the spa, and the general ambiance. I will say the service and amenities offered seem to be gradually declining, and it is getting busier to the point of feeling crowded and stressful to be at. The hotel used to provide coffee service. They took that away...so now, if you stay in the bunk rooms or the schoolhouse rooms, there's usually a crowd trying to make their own coffee in the morning, and only one hot water kettle (I believe there used to be two). They also seemed to have removed the toaster oven, and the staff were confused and were not able to help with locating one to use. Also no general dishes to use so you should bring your own if you want to eat anything of your own and avoid paying top dollar at the in house cafe. These are small things, but I believe for the price some more basic amenities should be offered. It would make the stay overall more pleasant and convenient, and feel like more of a hotel than a chaotic hostel. I will also note that a large group was staying in the bunk rooms during our stay and they were quite loud (and inebriated) and spreading their stuff into every corner (they had multiple coolers and even camping chairs set up in the common area of the bunk rooms). Obviously the staff can only do so much about this, but it does impact the value to have a big group partying, being loud, and generally not conscientious of the space they are using. My TLDR would be to avoid this place on weekends completely, unless you have the funds to stay in one of the cabin rooms which are more private. read more

My husband and I have stayed overnight only once, and that was nice because we had access to the spa area both during the night and in the morning before we checked out. First visit - quick stop in to check out the place. I think my spouse and I ended up grabbing a beverage and hanging out cause the lobby vibes are great. Feels more like a restaurant or cafe than a hotel lobby. It's a place you want to hang out. Second visit - made a spa reservation to use the pools. It was pretty great. I'm a big fan of any soak and the space they've created is lovely and tranquil. There's hot, warm and cold pools, a sauna and a good amount of seating if you need a break. I never needed a break - I was in the water for two hours and loving it. They provide towels and fruit infused water. We also had some snacks from the cafe and hung out in the lobby. The food was yummy and priced appropriately. During my visit, def a few things stood out to me as room for improvement - when I checked in at front desk, they just handed me a key card. I didn't realize that I would be checking in at the spa desk when I got there. I also didn't know where to go. A little more explanation from the desk would have been helpful. When we went back to the desk later, the other staff person assumed we were local, so maybe that was it? So if you go, just know that you aren't actually getting "checked in" at the hotel front desk - they just give you access to the gated area where the spa is. Go past the front desk to the left, out the door and follow the path to the gate. We got to the spa right after cleaning hour. I was joking that it was perfect timing and that I would have a really clean pool. Everything was really clean, but there were a TON of bubbles in the hot tub. My friend said it was probably due to soap in people's bathing suits. Maybe nothing to be done for that. I'd rather have bubbles than all the body oil and gunk I've seen in some other soaking pools. Because we were among the first in for our hour, we got in quickly, but when we were done, the traffic jam caused by everyone's reservations starting and ending at the same time became apparent. There was a line for the showers and the locker room was packed with people coming and going. Since everyone is supposed to shower before their soak, this is a cluster-f! I know it's challenging with scheduling software, but staggered reservations are a must! Now that I know how it works and where to go, it's really just an efficiency complaint, but I'll definitely be back. Hopefully an overnight next time! read more

We had a wonderful anniversary celebration stay at Society. The staff made us feel genuinely welcomed--everyone we interacted with was kind, helpful, and cared about creating a great experience for us. Our cabin room was clean, thoughtfully designed, and comfortable--modern and simple in the best way. It struck a nice balance between cozy and functional, with thoughtful touches that made it feel like a retreat. We also loved how many different activities were available on-site. The gym area was a lot of fun, with a basketball court and other games and activities. It had a laid-back, community feel that added to the whole experience. One of the main highlights is definitely the spa. After long days of hiking and exploring around the Gorge and Mt Hood, it was the perfect place to come home to. Great weekend getaway destination just an hour or so from Portland. We got an individual bedroom which had a shared bathroom which was just fine. They were both very clean. They also have the beds in the shared bunk rooms for 1/4 the price and cabin rooms for 2x the price. The spa was nice and relaxing but I do wish they had more beverage options while there. The cocktails and food options were yummy and it was fun sitting in the library which had a huge assortment of games to sit and play. Front desk attendants were always helpful. And there are many food, drink and other options to explore the area within 10 minutes or so. read more

I was charged twice for the $100 deposit, not sure if the front desk person did it on purpose since she was passive aggressive during my check-in. I understand kids are allowed in the pools but I had a very disrespectful experience during my stay. Two kids kept splashing me, swimming into me and blocking the pool stairs. The guardian and staff did not intervene or say anything to the family, which was very disrespectful. I know this space is primarily for white people though I remain hopeful that at least people will be respectful, but that was not the case during my weekend stay. We stayed in a double bed cabin. Pros: -nice architecture and landscaping -generally relaxing atmosphere -spa with cold plunge, mild pool, hot jet pool, and sauna -nice robes -they left us a nice happy birthday card and chocolates -swimsuit water extractor machine (but no bags for your swimsuit) -board games available to rent in the lobby. Few options for 2 player. cons: -insanely cold flooring, either need to install floor warmers, add more rugs, or provide slippers -no day passes for the spa, passes are only for one hour -no bowls in the kitchen so if you cook something with broth you'll be eating out of a small mug -you have to wash your own dishes/clean the kitchen. It is surprising considering this is a hotel and not an airbnb -food in the area isn't great, and the cafe has very limited food especially for vegans (expect to eat a hummus plate) -server at their lobby cafe was entirely dismissive--we did not get an acknowledgment of our presence as she just continued to do dishes. We had to ask if the cafe was open to which she responded rudely that it was. It's hard to tell the origin of why someone may ignore two people of color waiting at counter service, but the uneasy feeling it left us made us entirely avoid the lobby and cafe for the rest of the trip. -the spa playlist had commercials (guessing it was just radio) -no water bottles available in the room for purchase -the swimsuit options for sale were very ugly and almost all XL -a train runs nearby all day, they provide a ear plugs but we didn't find them necessary -the sanctuary is cleaned with an extremely strongly scented cleaner that would make it hard for anyone to really meditate or workout there. It smelled like public bathroom. misc: -the "gym" is just a basketball court with bleachers and some kettlebells, quirky idea but unlikely that it gets much use -always double check that your doors actually lock I would not return to this hotel. The cost does not justify the inconveniences throughout and while there's great stuff to do around the area broadly if you're into hiking or other outdoor activities, the town itself has little to choose from in terms of things to see and eat. Based on the presentation of the hotel online seeming as a retreat, I was surprised to see that it's right in the middle of town in clear view of neighbors (neighbors can see you when you're at the spa) the place is a much better value for folks who want to stay in the spa without staying at the hotel read more

I'm staying here now and it's fantastic. Came with four friends and we have been staying in the bunks the last three days, heading home tomorrow. The service is great, maybe everyone in Bingen/White Salmon/Hood River is just extremely nice?? We haven't had a single bad interaction. Bunks are so reasonably priced and beds are comfy. The spa is wonderful. I had a 30 minute gua sha facial massage at the spa this morning and it was a lovely way to start the day. So many great places to sit and read or work on your computer or just people watch. Food is good, coffee bar is good, the interior design and decor is so cool. We are visiting a friend who lives in White Salmon and will for sure be staying at Society for future visits. read more

This is by far the best hostel / hotel I have stayed at and well worth the price! (This includes months of backpacking the world). 5/5 amenities 5/5 price 5/5 parking 5/5 staff 5/5 food / drinks 4/5 location I was blown away from the start. The check in process is super simple and a quick walk around the place left me ecstatic. This is an remodeled schoolhouse but only in theme and the architectural bones; they have redone the entire thing with an incredible modern design with frequent amenities that made us never leave the building. The pool/hot tub A good hottub is a requirement for most of our stays but I never expect it at a hostel. That being said, this one was one of the best I have ever been to: perfect temperature, great covered outdoor spot, huge, great architecture and even a cold dip pool for jumping back and forth. Keep in mind that you need to reserve a time (hour slots) if you want to use the facility but you can always do it again after your appointment. The pool itself and the cold plunge are great as well with the pool being a bit warmer than usual and the cold plunge being refreshingly cold. They greet you at the door with fresh orange water and a towel and the changing area is just as immaculate as the rest of the hostel. The rooms There are three types of rooms that you can get. The hostel is what we went with and is the cheapest option. They were about 35 per bed and were shared with a room of about 30 people at most. When we were there it was very quiet and respectful but that will vary by time. The beds had a storage spot with a lock option, outlets, clean sheets/ towels, and comfortable beds. The other two options were private rooms and "cabins". We did not get a chance to look at the private rooms, but the cabins looked like they had a small room outside the bedroom for cooking and hanging out with the bedroom being a queen bed with bathrobe and a hammock outside. The library/cafe The cafe has a great assortment of food and drinks to choose from with some good prices and the libraries atmosphere is astounding. If you want a good breakfast I would recommend broder ost across the bridge but we had some good food here as well. The lobby has a board for recommendations of things to do around the area which is always nice and a fun touch especially considering that it is not near any major cities. There are also board games to use which range from decent to pretty good. (Blockus, apples to apples, code names, etc). Gymnasium The highlights for us were the cornhole, connect four, and shuffle board but there is also a complete basketball court, stadium seating and water bar area as well. Most of the games are out of the way so you don't need to move them and it is an event space in itself so you can have weddings/other events here as well. Other The amount of restrooms is almost absurd. They are lining the hallways so you will never run out. They are all well stocked and spacious with key card access like most doors. There are fire pits around the area if the pool area has too many. All the small details area accounted for so there is no worries here. We well most likely have our bachelorette and bachelor party here. My only regret is telling g other people about this gem. read more

Overall, this place is a winner! I stayed in the hostel portion. The bunk bed was spacious, other guests were respectful, and the outlet was conveniently placed. There's a storage locker that fits the size of a large briefcase. It should have been a little more clear that you need to bring your own lock, but they sell decent used ones (very difficult to set though) for $5. The cafe closes at 10 p.m. or 11 p.m., and conveniently opens at 7:00 a.m. on weekends. The breakfast salad and grilled ham stack sandwich were decent, but they look much more appetizing on the menu photo. They don't gouge, prices are fair. I enjoyed eating and relaxing by the fireplace. Service was super friendly and helpful! You need to look hard for anything negative: flat basketballs in the gymnasium and a super smelly changing room in the spa were about it. * the outside steps leading to the parking lot need to be more clearly marked: I witnessed two people almost trip. Loved the Sanctuary, especially as I had it all to myself. If you want to bring your doggie then you're required to stay in one of their suites with a patio that sleeps four. Unfortunately, those run around $300. The crowd is very mixed in age, lots hikers, but also get-out-of-towners with laptops. read more

My wife and I celebrated my 48th birthday by spending some time in the king size Cabin with the double Hamic underneath a private patio area enclosed from the sun!!! Way chill... This was our first time here and the staff that we interacted with were very welcoming and accommodating. I stayed two nights in a bunk. The bunk room was very clean and almost always quiet. The bed was very comfortable. I spent a lot of time in my cozy bunk, reading. Front desk staff was especially friendly. The cafe was sufficient. Good quality coffee and I had the Turkey panini twice. I plan to stay here again. The only downside was- guests are only allowed to use the spa/hot tub/sauna for 1 hour for each night. The website and staff said guests can book additional time in the spa after arrival. I was on the waitlist 4 times and never got a notification that I could visit the spa again. One hour isn't quite enough! The spa area itself is clean and a decent size. A nice getaway for a local (Vancouver). We mainly came for the spa feature and it was perfect. Nice hot tub outdoors, medium warm pool, cold pool and sauna. All super small but perfect with our 5 year old. Loved the robes, lemon water and extra towels. Attendant was awesome. Our cabin is like a tiny house but just right. It is mid-November so the outdoor amenities are just a tad to chilly (hammock at night) but I can see it being even more perfect in the warmer months. Great scents everywhere. Basically a hipster aesthetic through and through- lovely boutique vibe aka Portland style. We added amenities and it was a nice touch- s'mores, charcuterie board (was amazing), some retro drinks, a bouquet ( the only let down the roses were slightly wilted) and a bird book for my kiddo. I really like the vibe here but I think it needs a little bit of upping the game. The cabins are pretty and nicely equipped, though I think they should provide an extra blanket or two, and I also think they should add some kind of lotion to the bathroom toiletries. When you get back from the salt water soaking tub/hot tub/plunge pool/sauna etc., and you take a shower, one's skin tends to be dry. I didn't bother to bring any lotion with me and ended up needing to buy some. It was troubling to me that so many people of the limited number of bathers (it's by appointment which is nice) left their towels or partially consumed glasses of water all over the area as well. Pick up after yourselves people! While I like the relaxed atmosphere, I think it would be appropriate to require shoes in the lobby/cafe area as well. Having said all that, the staff was very sweet. The maintenance team was helpful as well, our light by our door wasn't working and it made for a very dark homecoming. They got creative and fixed the light in the evening until they could make a permanent fix in the light of day. I like the fire pit area too, but as it's a gas fire, it's best to come prepared with a warm jacket or blanket. They had a nice selection of wine or beer for purchase in the lobby, and the food in the cafe was tasty as well. (There also some craft cocktails available at the cafe.) You can eat/drink at community tables, or at random seating in The lobby area or take it outside to your room, or one of the many little seating areas near the spa building if it's not too cold. The area (Bingen) was fun to explore, as was White Salmon. It's very close to Hood River as well so there's lots of cool areas to explore. One last word of advice, while the hotel provides ear plugs you may want to consider bringing a fan or a white noise machine, as there is a train track nearby by that is in frequent use and the train is required to blow the horn a lot when going through town. So this awesome hotel is hidden in the cute city of Bingen WA right off the Columbia Gorge. The drive to the location itself was beautiful. My girls and I NEEDED this spa day and we reserved a day and got there early. Parking lot is small and also monitored by the hotel. We walked in and immediately got weird looks, cool, didn't bother us. Front desk was very cold and did not give the best customer service. She was just plain rude, and we were already warned by the other reviews so we weren't surprised. Got early access to the spa, enjoyed our time at the multiple pools and sauna. There was a larger group there but not too crazy for a Thursday. Spent a few hours then went back to the front desk to check in. We got first dibs on our bunks and I loved it. Loved the space and all the items the bunks came with. Something I would totally do again. Bathrooms were very clean as well. Docked a point specifically because of the super cold/rude front desk lady. I DO want to shout out the young lady working at the spa both THURSDAY and FRIDAY. She was extremely helpful and gave such great service to everyone at the spa while we were there. I'm coming back for Valentine's day with my fiance. read more

I stayed at the Society Hotel in Bingen in Spring 2022. I was using the spa facilities and went to the restroom. When I came back, my personal electronics were not where I had left them. I shared this fact with staff and they said they would be on the lookout. After I went back home to Oregon, I received a contact that they had found my property "in another guest room." They would not tell me what customer took it to their room or what staff for that matter. I did not have access to the room where my property was found. Despite my property either being stolen by staff or another guest, I was told that I would have to pay shipping and a fee to have my property sent to me. I told them did not seem fair, so Carmen Houzek the manager offered to ship it to Portland where I could pick it up. I agreed to this. I did not hear back for a long time so I finally contacted the Society Hotel. They told me they had lost my property, and they were sorry but they had tried and I was out of luck. The manager Carmen stated the reason for the omission was because of her pregnancy, and I pointed out that she should've simply delegated the task to another staff member and or communicated with me so as not to leave me hanging with false expectations. She could not come up with an intelligible reply to this line of reasoning. I contacted the owners of the hotel, I got their contact information from a former business partner of theirs who evidently was not too happy with their business dealings so he gave me their contact information freely and courteously. The owner offered me a $25 gift certificate, I had spent a lot of wasted time and this did not cover my property, so I suggested how about two free nights? And then he did not reply I said how about one free night? And then realized this owner is being very cheap here and I did not really want to go to small claims court simply on principle when it would be a lot of hassle so I emailed him accepting the $25 gift certificate. He then did not respond for several weeks and after several totally professional polite inquiries I finally received an email back stating that he had revoked the offer and that I was no longer allowed at their property, even though I was never rude to staff I was just assertive and persistent that something needed to be done. The owner Johnathan Cohen is a bigoted and spiteful man, and his prejudicial treatment of me is consistent with other poor reviews I've read accusing him of treating minorities unfairly which is entirely consistent with my experience with staff. read more

Great spot for a weekend getaway. $2 toll bridge crossing over from the Oregon side. 5 minute drive from downtown Hood River. Check-in 3PM. Check-out 11AM. No room service. Our private "cabin" was clean and simple. It offered all the amenities necessary, and the hammock/picnic table eating area was a nice touch. They also offered free ear plugs due to the noise of the train that would pass by during the course of the day. I didn't need to use them but I could see how it could be a nuisance to those super sensitive to noise. Our cabin was on the side closer to the train tracks so it may be helpful if you ask for a cabin located further away from the tracks. Food was simple and good, also the coffee was great. Kudos to the team working the cafe, tip them well. There's also plenty of places to eat nearby (Everybody's Brewing is good), but we also brought our own food and drinks to enjoy, cause that's what you should do. The spa/sauna was definitely the highlight, located in the center of the courtyard. I'm looking forward to checking out the massage services once they're available and also the bar once it's all built out. There was also a place called the sanctuary that was not yet completed but was told possibly mid June. Oh and the basketball court with stadium seating is very cool. Don't forget to check that out. Forgot my shorts so I had to buy a pair. The price said $25 but the attendant charged me 30. I said I thought these were 25. She said yeah, the price just went up today. It wasn't the extra 5 bucks it was the glib attitude that didn't gel with the copacetic scene. read more

I only stayed here one night for around $60 in on of the dorm hostel beds. I was impressed with the restored public school and into a Hostel. The woody smell gave it a characteristic vibe. There is a big gym and even a pool and spa out back. This place really is the bomb. read more

Please note this review is for their cafe, we have not stayed in the hotel yet. Our go-to spot in Bingen/ White Salmon. Best coffee in town in my opinion. Their food is excellent and it's still new enough that they are never super busy. The environment is peaceful and beautiful, and their style is lovely. My favorite thing to order is their Turkey sandwich, and their iced lavender lattes are great. They make their own lavender flavor in house from local lavender, and you can taste the difference. It doesn't taste like fake lavender syrup. My husband gets the cortado every time and loves it. The staff is all super friendly. They have an outdoor seating area with picnic tables that we sit at with our dog, even though the actual hotel doesn't allow dogs. We love it here! read more

Really disappointing. We were looking for a quiet, nature getaway. Booked a private cabin for more privacy. Website talked about the "zen". We could hear every word of the conversation of the people in the next cabin (from our bedrooms). We also heard music from a local restaurant. The worst was blaring trains every hour (even at 3 am!). This is not a quiet location, and the website should not advertise "zen and peaceful." This is a cool hostel-type experience, and the website should stick to that. We should have stayed at Skamania Lodge. We were so tired/annoyed, that we checked out early and went home to sleep. read more

I want to leave a review for the hotel, so I guess I'll leave it here. I recently attended a workshop here for work. The workshop was fine, but the hotel was amazing! I want to come back for a weekend and stay! Bingen, WA is an adorable little town, with wineries and shops, situated in the beautiful Columbia Gorge. The hotel is on the side of a little cliff, overlooking the Columbia River. From the outside, it is warm, charming, and fits into the landscape, with that woodsy Pacific NW look. Inside, the Society Hotel is cozy and inviting, almost like an old house you would find in NE Portland. My favorite part was the reading room/library. I wanted to sit there sipping something, smoke a cigar, and read the afternoon away. (Maybe not smoke a cigar, but it has that vibe.) A great place to spend a chilly winter weekend, especially if you're a bibliophile like me. The meeting hall was spacious and accommodating. (The restrooms were wonderful and private. So rare in a large meeting space!) The deck/patio outside the main doors was the perfect place to take a break on a beautiful, sunny afternoon, even though the east wind was blowing mightily that day. Lots of tables to have lunch outside. The Society Hotel is a great, relaxing spot to have a work retreat. I definitely want to make a plan to return on my own and explore more of what this charming hotel has to offer! read more
