    The Mean Owner
    Susanna L.

This review is 6 years late. I think it took so long because I just wanted to completely forget about the awful owner and his angry, hostile, nasty attitude. I was reminded that this place existed after my son pulled out old pictures. My son was 4 when he took a beginner class here. The owner was also a teacher. He taught my son and other kids in a small group. My son was a total beginner, but the owner kept forcing him to go under water. He pulled my son across the pool and told him to kick. Every few feet the owner would dunk my son under the water. My son was so scared. He kept choking on water and crying. The owner did not care one bit. He just kept mechanically pulling my son along and pulling him down under. When I finally had enough I politely asked if he could be gentler with my son and go at my son's learning pace. The owner yelled at me - not an exaggeration - he raised his voice so high everyone in the pool room became an instant audience. He yelled, "YOU are telling me how to do my job?!?!" Then he recommended that I take my kid to a YMCA. After that first disastrous lesson, I never took my son back. I did not even bother asking for a refund. I knew another encounter with the owner would just be a waste of time and I would never see a penny of my money back. I ended up taking my son to a YMCA for group lessons and our local high school for private summer lessons. My son learned to swim at those other places with teachers that were calm, friendly, and patient. Please stay away from Shin Swim School. The owner there hates kids and it is very evident.

We, as the parents and the kids, love this swimming school. The size of 50x25ft indoor heated pool is crystal clean. The water filter and the maintenance have approved by Department of Health yearly. The coaches clean the place every day before the first class starts. (I work in health care field. I pay attention on facility's cleanness and maintenance too). Shin and his instructors are very friendly and patience to the kids. The ratio is max to 4 kids (like 2 beginners and 2 independent) per instructor. The kids swim for a full hour. They are not only learning the swimming, but also the skills. My son (10 years old now) had been learned swimming in YMCA and other swimming schools before Shin. But they were unsuccessful. About 2 years ago, one of the school parents referred us to Shin. I send both kids to learn swimming. Of course, they cried and nervous at the beginning. We very appreciated to Shin and his coaches for their patience and kindness. My kids have learned for more than a year now. My son able to swim all 4 styles, and now starts to join Shin's swimming team. My girl able to swim 3 styles. Thank you Shin!

I think this how the swimming school should be! My son starts to swim after 6 session, I couldn't ask for more. First he was unhappy and cried, but that's the way. Don't spoil them. Throw them in water. Let them drink it once or twice. And you'll surprise how fast they can learn how to swim.

She's not afraid of going into the water already!! Lesson 4!!

That itself gives this historic structure a miraculous feel because it survived desegregation in an apartheid state that still tries to hide/deny its ugly white supremacism. Nonetheless, the racist, capitalist model of diminishing public infrastructure because they provide benefit to non-whites equally, prevails. The changing rooms are a shambles. Ironically, in many poorer nations where I have used municipal pools, they have smarter, more updated locker rooms. (This reveals the character of what passes for national culture.) Enough now with the disparagement and let's pivot to this historic pool. The length is perhaps Olympic size but the deep end of the pool is in the middle. It's cordoned off into three sections across, allowing a lap swimmer to benefit from the deepest central third, although it is not a full 25 yards across. The water is much clearer than in Glassell Park and perhaps it's because it is not as heavily used? I found there's a solid jet stream of pumped water underneath leading to a kind of "rip tide" effect in the pool. You have to work harder to get across because of the undercurrent. It's quite enjoyable. The lack of trees around this pool makes the sun feel harsh, but the nearby Gold line train gives it a feeling of being part of a vibrant metro region. As well I was smelling street tacos from a nearby truck, very aromatic I was delighted to find this pool during one of the extended brutal heat waves of triple digit temperatures that are commonplace now thanks to climate change. However, consistent with the history of white colonizers being callous about the welfare of non-white citizens, and overriding the unique realities of western geography in favor of conformity with norms from the northeast, the City of LA Parks and Recreation department feels the need to shut down pools like this one during LA's *hottest months* of September and October. In other words, yes, the City of LA would rather people of this area suffer the heat than keep this pool open to allow for some respite for vulnerable human bodies. LA's hottest months are always September and October. City of LA Parks and Recreation: We don't care. After team practice, he has a 30-minute dryland session, followed immediately by private swim training. For the past several weeks, he's been allowed to re-enter the pool area without waiting in the general line, which makes sense due to the tight timing. If we were warned that it was against the policy, we would have not done this. But today, a staff member named Sara (who did not give her last name) suddenly yelled at him as he walked in, insisting that he go back outside and wait in the long public line. We explained that his private training is only 30 minutes, and waiting 15+ minutes would waste half the session. We offered to follow the rule next time, saying we'd have a parent wait in line on his behalf--but she still refused and wouldn't make a one-time exception. What bothered me most was not just the rigid enforcement of a rule--but her attitude. As a city employee, Sara was harsh, dismissive, and showed zero empathy for a child trying to follow his training schedule. It felt unnecessarily personal, and frankly, we couldn't help but feel targeted--possibly because we're Chinese. In today's social climate, it's hard not to notice when someone goes out of their way to make life difficult for no good reason. We understand policies are in place for a reason. But government staff--especially those working with kids and families--should be trained to enforce them with basic courtesy and common sense. Yelling at a 10-year-old and refusing to understand and work with parents trying to cooperate is not how a public facility should treat its community.

They are SUPER clean and they have showers, bathrooms and, of course, lockers. Unfortunately the showers kinda lack privacy so I will never shower there. I posted a pic with the current Aquatorium fees. Funny story: I was at the Fitness Center, annoyed that all these high school girls were taking up all the treadmills. I was giving dirty looks and sighing. Well a week later I received the Commerce Newspaper and there on the front page were all those treadmill girls. And I was wrong. They weren't high schoolers.
