Decided to join the YMCA for gym use. It's been about 3 weeks now as a member and time for a review. The gym is not very big, but it does provide all that is needed. They have plenty of treadmills, 2-stair climbers, plenty of free weights, dumbells, benches, fitness power racks, and exercise machines. Equipment is kept clean and is well organized, with everything being in its place. Sanitizer and paper towels are plentiful for all to use for eq wipedowns. The area is always clean and well ventilated. So far, my experience has been positive. No overcrowding and just a pleasant experience to get a workout in and done. read more

First time coming here to use the pool, which is part of my physical therapy for the arthritis in my knee. My PT therapist advised me that swimming can help ease the pain in my arthritis, knees and back so I come to swim and it also helps me relax from any stress I might have because I do enjoy the water. My husband says that I'm part fish because I'm always in the water whenever I can be. I do recommend any YMCA because the service they have is extremely beneficial to the community. read more

I come here for the gym, I haven't taken advantage of the other amenities of my membership, but I am well pleased with paying for just the gym! There is everything for a good workout split, 3 power racks, a good range of dumbbells, machines for every muscle group, plenty of cardio machines, most handles and grip attachments, most barbell and bars. Everything is clean and organized, the staff is always friendly and welcoming, especially Araceli and Ingrid. I've made plenty of friends as everyone who goes to the gym is easy going. I've gone to two other gyms for some time and it wasn't worth it, too crowded, dirty, or a bunch of hidden fees. The YMCA is straight up. Pay your dues and enjoy. If the staff reads this review, thank me by ordering a Mag Grip lol. Or a T bar row. Seriously though, they've earned my business and I'm going to be a lifelong customer. read more

I enjoy all the classes. The staff is welcoming , they have a good crew taking care of the pool. The whole facility is clean.

I am beyond happy that this Y has opened back up after the long pause due to COVID. The changes have involve two separate times to visit the gym, both mornings for a time and then afternoons. There are temp checks and a daily questionnaire to guarantee client safety and good health. There are dispensers with paper towels and disinfectant solution for members to clean their areas with. Group workout are only held outside and there is no kid care as of yet. Machines are spaced out and everyone must wear their masks. I go in the morning's and it should be said that each Monday and Thursday there is a food bank event since the start of COVID where the company has been helping feed the community. There is a separate line on those days and parking may be an issue for some on those days as well but I haven't experienced any kind of difficulty. I'm just beyond happy to be back. read more

I feel compelled to share my experience as this is a pattern and not a single occurrence. First, I would like to share that I grew up at the Montebello Y and love the mission. However, I've recently returned to this location and goodness has it been a disappointment. The mats are ALWAYS dirty, the exercise rooms have dust and hair sitting for who knows how long and today I observed a large insect crawling over flyers that I would normally pick up to read. I will be sticking to simple machines like the treadmill that involves little contact and go out of my way to return to the Y I was previously attending. read more

I have been pleasantly surprised, overall, with this gym. One suggestion I have for improvement is rule enforcement. Posted rules say to restrict telephone calls and photo taking so that others can enjoy their workouts. Unfortunately staff does not enforce these rules, in particular the telephone calls. My workouts would be more enjoyable except that each time I come to workout I have to listen to someone's telephone conversations. Usually the same one or two people. These calls are not short, they are a part of these peoples workout routines - it also extends the time they are on a machine. The conversations are not quiet either and can't be fully drowned out with earplugs or music via earphones. Trust me, I tried!!! If you have a posted rule, management really should expect and instruct staff to enforce the posted rules, in particular when the infraction is brought to their attention. I been a member for over 13 years so I feel like I have a solid opinion of the place. PROS: Child care is included in your membership. The staff taking care of the kids try their best to keep them busy and are also extremely patient and friendly. Most members are friendly (I myself have created long term friendships with a few). The place is pretty safe no matter what time of day or night you workout. Enough parking space in the lot and in the street. Front desk girls Aracely and Olivia are always nice and friendly. CONS: When I first became a member you could always find someone in the gym incase you wanted some training tips or had any questions/concern. Now you are lucky if you find anyone in the gym to help you, and if you do find one they are personal trainers which means you have to pay. The monthly price goes up every few years. However nothing seems to be fix or upgraded as a result of the price increase. The "Activity Center" is very limited on activities for the kids. The staff puts out an art/craft calendar but they aren't provided supplies to actually do them. Machines are constantly breaking down and take forever to get fixed. Recently they started charging for group workouts. Which by the way take up half of the main gym space, and are obnoxiously loud and annoying. Every summer the AC seems to break down and also takes for ever to get serviced. The classes that are included with membership are constantly being cancelled without any notice. Restrooms are dirty and outdated. The locker rooms smell like mold. read more

My wife and I been going to the YMCA for over 5 years great fitness center for therapy and Exercise counseling and training: Exercise gets your heart pumping and your entire cardiovascular system working. You'll learn how to get your body moving in ways that promote heart health. The people that work there are very friendly and helpful. They also have a pool if you prefer swimming like me. As far a Y's go I think that this Y is one of my favorites. Ive been going to this ymca for almost one year now. I can surely tell you that ALL of the staff are friendly and approachable. The front desk staff greet you as soon as you walk in and wish you well on your way out, they are always ready to assist me with any questions I present to them, and several staff members are bilingual. The gym floor staff are very knowledgeable in physical fitness as well as nutrition and several of them teach phenomenal group fitness classes! The entire building is clean and their custodians are extremely sweet. The managers work diligently to keep the programs and facility top notch because they genuinely value their members! I highly recommend this Y. In summary, this place is clean, family friendly, knowledgeable, bilingual, safe, and they provide several wonderful programs. read more

Another reviewer mentioned in another review about there being a lot of seniors and they do have a good amount of senior members but they are kind and for the most part keep to themselves. I have worked out there a lot and the counselors are informative when you ask them about workouts and are usually available to give you a short demonstration. The Director there is helpful if you have questions, she takes the time. The front desk membership staff are well informed and normally have a good grasp of the current information. I have loved all the kickboxing classes with Gaby, I highly recommend taking a course with her. She will kick your ass and make you feel great at the same time. In addition, they have daycare if you have a child 6 months or older. Prices are competitive with rates in the LA area but you have to consider that they do not fluctuate like privately owned gyms, this is a nonprofit. read more

Had a bad experience with a trainer at the gym. It is not the gym itself but the trainer and her approach. My wife and I have been coming to the Montebello location for about a month. We follow rules and understand it is a family Enviorment. That is why we decided from all the gyms in the area to come here. For about a month now my wife has been coming with her athletic attire (Sports Bra and Leggings) and never has any of the trainers giving her an issue about her attire. Today 5 minutes during our work out the trainer Christina Servier approach my wife and told her that her sports bra was against policy. A policy that is not posted anywhere in the gym (only on website) and you have to dig to find it. We are upset about the approach. Christina could have waited till we were done, till we were leaving. Then a simple hey guys did not want to interrupt but just wanted to let you know the policy about the attire. Even maybe have a print it out. Paul Parzik the executive director took the time to speak to us. We enjoy the gym but this trainer put a sour taste on our day. read more

I joined YMCA June of 2017. And I would like to say that In the beginning I was unmotivated to start working out. I joined the "Y" because I felt a need to make a change. It wasn't until Jose Becerra became my personal trainer that my outlook on working out and eating habits changed. Jose motivates me every day to keep up the good work. He pushes me on days I feel like I can't go on. He constantly tells me to keep my eye on the price which is myself. Since then my whole outlook on physical fitness has totally changed. I am 56 years old & I never had been to a gym. I started coming last year July 2021 at 268lbs. I paid my fee and found a real clean and not crowded gym. Met John one of the gym trainers. He took the time to explain how to workout out, my daily diet and other exercise I should do out of the gym. Now May 2022, I am at 232 lbs, a loss of 46 lbs. Sad, I'm bothered by the lack of training the workers receive, from my point of view IF any at all. Regarding cleanliness. Workers and or the facility staff really need to begin to speak to people about proper cleaning of machines and or weights after using them. People should not only clean the benches in which we use. But more importantly, wipe the handles from machine and weights there of. That's what should be getting cleaned first and foremost. Though I've never trained with the "Kickboxing" instructor. From the videos I've seen on their Facebook page, he needs to retrain in the art because he lacks the basic components of this. Aside from my bantering, this facility is a good solid base for your regular daily work out. It has treadmills, cable machines and free weights. A small stretching area and plenty of eye candy for both... Further more, if you attend this or any other gym, as you're working out, please stay off your phone and don't hog machines and or benches if you're simply taking pictures or taking up space. I tried the Montebello YMCA because it is along the detour due to construction to my work. It is definitely more of a family-oriented YMCA, as most of the people there had small children. I went around 5pm, and there were many open cardio equipment to use. Facility was clean, looked like it was recently remodeled. There's a variety of weight training machines to address almost every muscle, and few people were using these as well. Around 6, there was an 'elite' fitness class (some kind of boot camp) that took up a sizable portion of the gym for the class. Parking is free and ample, when I arrived there were many open spots. I deducted a star for the free weight training area. There were many teenagers sitting idly texting and talking to friends, while I waited to use equipment. People left towels to 'claim' their machines, preventing other people from working in a set. They didn't return to the machine for sometimes as long as 10 minutes. When the smith machine appeared to be free, I started adjusting the weights, and some kid angrily came up to me saying "didn't you see my hat? I was using this machine!" To which I kindly asked if I may work in a set in between (since he was obviously not using it continuously). He shrugged and walked off, so I did my sets and left. I hate interacting with people outside of work, and with so many YMCA options I'd rather not deal with waiting and wondering if equipment is ok to use or not. Another star was deducted for the locker room, which was basically just an expanded bathroom. Most YMCAs have saunas and lots of changing areas, but not this one (from what I saw at least). I didn't have anywhere to put my stuff while I was changing since the single bench was taken up by another person. I had to wait for them to finish, or else I had to put my stuff on the wet tile floor. Perhaps it's good for families, but I still prefer the Downey YMCA or the Ketchum-downtown one since they have more free weigh areas. Probably won't be returning unless it's a cardio only day or I decide to pop out some babies. read more

After reading the review by 'Nancy M' , it has encouraged me to write one myself about the YOUTH SPORTS PROGRAM. I enrolled my son in the soccer program, and loved it. He was a champ, Coach Todd was excellent! It was a great season! The following year I enrolled him again but this time with a different Coach. No complaints about him, he was great too. My ultimate complaint would be the Coach from the other team and the Referee. They are the reason why I will never return to YMCA Youth Soccer. The Referee was awful, he would make bad unfair calls and would be blind when it comes to the other team making a foul. When the ball would go out, he always would give it to the other team. And if my son's team was getting close to winning, the Coach from the other team would throw big fits about it. After each game, my Son would just be so frustrated from all the unfairness and slowly lost intetest in soccer. This breaks my heart because he was real talented. The Director of Youth Sports for YMCA really needs to evaluate the Ref for this location. Not all of them but the large white male who brings a football to a damn soccer game. You killed the love of soccer for my son! read more

It's an affordable gym membership along with access to aquatic and cardio classes. My only issue with this place is the amount of senior citizens who like to act creepy and hit on you, or if they're not hitting on you they're talking about god knows what and next thing you know you're 40 minute run is over and they're STILL talking. Or, they like to just sit on the weight machines... The workers are friendly, the place is clean, and you don't have meat heads lifting thousands of pounds and making you feel intimidated. AND, they have awesome kiddy programs at great prices. Get your child active! read more

This isn't the best gym and I wouldn't even consider it as my top 3 gyms I've been to but it's close to my house and there's only one or two guys that think there shit don't stink lol The great things about this gym is that if you come at a certain time like 06:00 - 11:30 the gym is basically yours lol the weight room has a nice tv to watch sports while lifting and the wall is glass so you can look outside every now and then = ) The bad things about this gym is that it closes early Mon - Fri(10pm), super early on Sat(5:00pm), and it's closed on Sun! For maybe 5 days of the week there are wipes available for the seats but then for two days there isn't any and you can expect some sweaty ass seats + the paper towels for some reason run out quick and there is never an extra roll for employees to put out. The pool free time is only for about two hours a day but either way most of the time it's closed for maintanence. The majority of the employees don't have a shit clue what they're talking about whether it's about billing or exercises and the wipe seat after use policy, age limit 12 years and up for gym entrance, and dress code is not enforced. If you come in the evening there's hardly any room to lift in the weight room and you're lucky if you can get a treadmill so try coming early. This place is a non profit organization that somewhat has a positive effect in the community but for people like me that pay close to $40 a month which is a bit over what you would pay at an actual gym but oh well I'm pretty happy Cus I live really close by and I'm saving gas money. read more

Very convenient for me as well as being an employee for the Anderson-Munger YMCA, the Montebello-Commerece YMCA is closer to my home and pretty much has everything that one needs to get their daily workout. I have been a member at different gyms before discovering the Y. I really like it here because the staff makes you feel welcomed and they acknowledge your presence not like at other gyms I have been to. It's nice and quiet here and there are some senior citizens members here but most of the time they keep to themselves. There is a swimming pool, free weight room and all sort of machines for lifting, toning, and Cardio! All the other members here are very friendly too! Came here looking for a Y closer to where i live.... (I'm currently at the Glendale Y) Everything is really nice, it looks like they did a recent remodel (except for one area which I will get back to). I walked in and the staff is very friendly... I have a 7 day free pass and Adam helped me get that set up. I asked for a tour which did very well, I had specific requirements in my workout and he lead me to each place that was apart of my routine. The cardio room is amazing, brand new elliptical machines, two different types of stationary bikes.... All which have an iPhone 4/ iPod charger connection.... Only issues is that rooms gets crazy hot in the afternoon the widow walls are south facing so you're looking out onto Beverly blvd and there's no AC, only ceiling fans. When there aren't classes in the main room or aerobic room you're allowed to go in and do your thing. You can use their stereo and everything, there is AC in these rooms, it is really nice and clean. My only complaint is the women's locker and pool.... I think everything else was remodeled but the locker room and pool... It was small, did the job... But there was this really weird smell as soon as I walked in... I couldn't put my finger on what the funky smell was... I then jump in the pool which only had 1 lap lane :/ bummer but the family that was in they was friendly enough to give me the entire lane so I could do my routine. Length of pool.... Lemme tell you... When you're so use to a 25 m pool a drop is a huge difference... This pool is 20 m, I was Zipping back and forth so quickly I felt me turns we're pushing me half way down the lane already. Not only that the pool is semi-outdoors it has a glass ceiling, and it's soooooo soooo sooooo incredibly dirty, the water tasted salty there were visible things floating... I had to get out. Not to mention the pool closes at 4, weird. After I was out of the pool and changing in the locker room I realized what the smell was.... Cat urine. I swear. I know what cat urine smells like and the locker room, ALL OF IT, smelled just like cat pee. I would give this place another star, but the pool is my main routine.... If I come back to use my free pass, I may only use it for the cardio room and to do some personal yoga. I guess I have no choice but to drive to the Glendale Y :/ read more

UPDATE : Long over due , in regards to the previous review I was contacted by Santiago and Kyle asap and received apologies for the misunderstanding. This YMCA is a beneficial gym for both parents and kids or anyone in particular! They offer a variety of fitness classes ranging from different levels with a plethora of helpful knowledgeable instructors that actually assist you when needed. GYM: The facility itself offers awesome equipment. They have treadmills, rowers,ellipticals, bikes,stair climbers and a sci fit bike for cardio. Like other gyms they have kettle bells , dumbbells , barbells , stability balls, among other exercise machines etc... overall this gym is very well equipped and is ALWAYS CLEAN. If something is busy you can always do a workout modification. PARKING: They do have a big parking facility, lot does get full during peak hours but their is always street parking. FOR KIDS : Activity center where you can drop off your child to exercise I believe there is a 2 hour limit. Something really cool would be that 12 year old kids can do a fitness assessment and after passing they can take classes or use the cardio equipment. There is also a free kids only fitness class. They also have swimming, sports and dance lessons for kids at a very cheap cost. Etc... EMPLOYEES: The YMCA staff is nice, understanding and informative. TRAINERS/INSTRUCTORS: The personal trainers at this gym have very good backgrounds ranging from personal training certification to bachelors and masters degree so their is a lot of variety wether you're looking to get fit with a trainer. The instructors for the classes are amazing and really know how to give you a great workout. The fitness classes with Kyle, Nick, Cristina, Angelica and David are my personal favorite!!! (Haven't had time to take the others) Their class schedule does change every month or so be sure to grab a brochure! Overall I would recommend this gym to a beginner or gym junkie! read more
