Master Siwon does an amazing job with the kids; he's upbeat, patient, and great at building confidence. Our youngest was very shy at first, but with his encouragement he's now thriving and has already completed his first belt test. The stude are wonderful too and really add to the supportive environment. Beyond learning taekwondo, the program emphasizes respect, responsibility, and personal growth at home and school, which we've genuinely seen reflected in our kids' behavior. The kids love the goals, rewards, and sense of accomplishment, and talk about earning their black belts someday. Born and raised doing taekwondo in Korea, he was a multi-time Korean national sparring champion and 7th-degree black belt owner. Master Han is very patient and encouraging. As an adult with past injuries, Master Han is very mindful in adjusting the instructions based on our body, making sure we put health first and this is injury-free. He puts emphasis on a positive, safe and fun environment, every time I leave the class, I feel energized and uplifted, both physically and mentally. Master Han just recently moved to a new location in Lake City/Northgate area, and there are some amazing grand reopening promos. The masters are great with young and old kids. Even if these young kids are shy the masters get through to them and build their confidence. I've seen students go to being shy and not caring about there kicks to being very social and kicking with grate form. And the masters don't do this by being rude or being aggressive which I think is a stereotype of "breaking them down and building them back up" as they say but instead focus on being kind and slowly getting them out of their shell and Encouraging them to try new things. And if they aren't ready then that's ok to them. It is a great place to learn and get out of your comfort zone to reach new goals. Yes, you can still learn some very strong self-defense, but the point is to improve yourself and then improve the people and communities around you. The instructors are all very genuine and caring and the knowledge passed is very deep. The training combines movements from all east asian styles of martial arts, along with herbs and meditation. There is also philosophy passed, such as not hurting others and being true to your inner self. Oom Yung Doe offers many different training programs. You can train towards your black belt in moo doe, you can train in one particular style, you can take a short-term or a longer-term program, or you can take a conditioning program designed to develop one particular aspect of your self (such as strength, flexibility, core development, jumping ability, etc.). There are also conditioning programs that will help to resolve physical, mental, or emotional issues - these programs use herbs, pressure points, and simple movements and are very effective. You can also enroll your children in either regular classes or in special programs designed to boost their abilities in sports or other athletics. This is great for scoring points in an olympic sparring match but fails miserably when called upon to defend yourself in a dark alley. JHK takes an analytical approach to the study of martial arts and teaches power and precision in addition to speed. Master Kim can claim a direct lineage to the early TKD masters, having been personally instructed by the founder of TKD, General Choi. I began my practice at JHK TKD in March of last year and feel like part of a family there. Classes are available several times per day, 6 days each week and my tuition allows me unlimited access. We're encouraged to treat the dojang as we would a second home, and I've always found the relaxed atmosphere to be welcoming and tolerant of all personalities, abilities, and walks of life. This is not your typical Kobra Kai, take-no-prisoners dojo, where muscular dudes walk around with their sleeves cut off. JHK is a place to lose some weight, learn to be good at something cool, and have a few laughs with new friends in the process.
