I went here after stepping into a couple other local Japanese straightening places all recommended by the South Bay moms group (bc they're the best) and many recommended Sho. Hands down they had the best price and most of the moms raved about it anyway. This place is what I wanted. No flash, just a hole in the wall no frills place where good work would be the standard. Miki did my hair back in March and 2.5 hours later my hair was perfection. As usual I asked for 0.5" to the root to be untouched so my hair wouldn't be super flat after and it was just now I needed it. My hair was about 2/3 down my back and miki meticulously but efficiently worked her magic. She was so darn sweet, too. We moved to Orange County from Redondo, so add this as another thing I'll miss big time from the South Bay! I've gotten my hair Japanese straightened since 2004. This place has hands down done the best job. I didn't end up with fried frazzled ends in random spots like I have in the past and my hair was even processed balayage! Thank you Miki! You are awesome! I don't like leaving "needs improvement" reviews, but I feel with some changes this salon would really be top notch. Miki did my Japanese straight perm. They need to either fork out the money and pay to have someone answer the phone, do online scheduling, OR send their messages to voicemail and call their customers back when they have a few minutes to spare. I did NOT appreciate how many times Miki left me to take phone calls and schedule appointments with other clients during my session. It was a total of 6 times, and 3 of those times happened while she was rinsing the chemicals out of my hair! My wet hair has literally hanging in the sink, and she let me neck take all the pressure while she went to talk to a client on the phone. Timing is pretty key with chemical treatments, and I can't imagine that leaving in the processing ingredients longer than necessary was good for my hair. The result...a sore neck and nice hair walking out of the salon, but a couple weeks later I was already noticing brittle, damaged hair and ends. read more

I got a Japanese straightening perm in 2017 and loved my hair but since my hair grew so much length in these few years i went back recently in April 2022 . I still love their work , first time the guy did it second time the girl , they are both great. My hair is so soft it didn't get damaged (only my bleached ends but she told me prior to process, she also took care of my ends by processing less time there) . Now my hair is always straight ! Lots of people can't believe it but it's a perm so yes even after showers and after years your hair will stay straight :) . They answer your questions so don't be afraid to ask , they're not very talkative while doing the hair but i like that because i just sit and relax :) . Straight, healthy, and shiny hair 2 months after straitening treatment! Worth the cost. I waited 60 days to review because any salon can make your hair look great the day of straightening. I walked in with colored, processed, puffy, frizzy, and slightly curly hair. Sho was very welcoming during the consult and I scheduled, the Japanese straightening 4-hour process, later in the afternoon. He was a thorough perfectionist. I've had Yuko in the past, but the Lysco product has given my hair superior results. Go to a professional . He knew the exact timing for my previously damaged hair and to my surprise my hair is silky and smooth to the touch every morning. Every strand is straight from the roots to the ends. So I'll start by saying that I had japanese straightening done at several places when I lived in NY--from nice salons to an "assembly line" straightening shop in Queens. Sho Hair Studio tops them all by a landslide. I've had my hair straightened here probably about four or five times so far. I saw Sho the first time, Miki the next, and I've continued to see Miki since. They are both excellent and true professionals with their craft; you can't go wrong with either stylist. The shop itself is "no frills", and every time I've come in Miki and Sho are working on one person at a time (no assistants, etc). But they know their stuff. I would imagine that each one of them have done thousands of straightening processes and that's exactly what you want. There is too much risk of damage to trust someone who only does Japanese straightening once in a while--and I believe that's all they do here. They know exactly what your hair needs, which formula to use, and how long to leave it on for. The first time that I saw them I had highlighted hair, and it's usually ill advised to do Japanese Straightening on hair that's been lightened. But Sho assessed the situation and used a formula and time frame that was safe. However, they will honestly tell you if they don't feel that it is safe to do and you want to respect that for your own good. For my most recent appointment, I was doing a root touchup but Miki noticed that my ends were very damaged (lots of length from not cutting much during Covid). After trimming my hair, she applied some keratin treatment to smooth them out and if there was an additional charge, I didn't notice it. Their prices are very reasonable; in fact, I've noticed that most beauty services have gone up in price post-Covid to make up for lost revenue but that doesn't seem to be the case here. It's amazing and really thoughtful to the client. Overall, great work, very professional, and I highly recommend them for Japanese straightening. read more

Wow. This is the place to go if you want Japanese hair straightening treatment. These guys know what they're doing. And their price can't be beat!!! $270 For thick, long hair down to the butt!! If you care about aesthetics and a boujee salon, this is not the place. But if you have frizzy, curly, course, thick, unmanageable hair and you want hair so straight even after a day at the beach and it air dries into soft, straight hair you only dreamed of having.... This is the place to go!!! I took my daughter here Friday morning, she has a lot of hair and it's thick, frizzy, and down to her butt. And today, 3 days later, we went snorkeling. I've been going to Sho's Hair Studio to get my hair straighten for awhile now. I've had my hair done by all three stylists, Sho, Miki, and Minoru. Minoru is my favorite, he's very meticulous, and I like how he suggested how I should style my hair after the straightening. The place is nice, clean, and their price is the best in South Bay. Other salons will start the price at $300+. Here, price is usually around $200+ (depending on the length of your hair). I will go back for a touch up in a few months. Highly recommended! Tips: Best to schedule your jp straightening appointment on a weekday (morning time is ideal). I have been going to Sho Hair Studio for about 4+ years and been having my hair straightened by Miki twice a year since then. Miki is amazing! I am of mixed race. Filipino and Black and I have been struggling with my hair all my life and Miki was seriously heaven sent. I don't ask for much. Just for the hair straightening and for my split ends to be cut. It's even a joke between Miki and I where she asks how much she will cut off. Which is one of the reasons why I love her. She remembers me. Although I see her twice a year, she already knows exactly what I want and need when I walk in. She straightens as close to my scalp as safely as possible. Even during a late appointment, she shows no sign of tiredness and does my hair like I'm the first appointment of the day. Miki and Sho are so accommodating and their prices are very fair. I have no problem paying. My only problem would be if they ever closed down. I wouldn't know where to go for my hair. PLEASE. Take your business to Sho. They are amazing! read more

This is my very first Yelp review, and after 7 years visiting Sho it's about time I share my love of his work! After years of dealing with unruly fine curly hair and endless treatments, processes, flight irons, time, and money, I received a recommendation from a colleague to visit Sho for hair straightening...and Ladies, he changed my life! Sho is very detailed oriented and is especially conscientious about the areas where I have "baby" hair that is finer and more brittle (above my ears) -- he leaves this till the end to limit any damage. Sho charges ~$180 for the treatment and it takes around 3 hours (including a trim and deep conditioning at the end of the treatment). Worth every minute and every penny! After the treatment, my hair is bone straight and shiny. I can walk out of the shower, go for a run on the beach, or visit hot and humid South Carolina (in August!) and it stays straight and shiny! I didn't really notice my curly hair growing in until about 2-3 months later and would just spend 10 minutes blow drying the roots until my touch up visit (6-7 months). My hair-type for reference: My hair is a few inches below my shoulders and curlier/kinkier than Sarah Jessica Parker. I did not have any color in my hair but did have a relaxer that had partially grown out. My hair is VERY fine but I have a LOT of hair (which is good because your hair is SO straight after wards you lose quite a bit of volume). I typically ask Sho not to go all the way to the roots (leave about 1/2" untouched) so that I can retain some of the volume for that first month. I do not use any special shampoos or conditioners (just whatever is on sale at Target) and it still looks amazing! I believe they recommend not washing your hair for 48-72 hours after the treatment but I typically wash it 24 hours later and never have any issues. read more

This is my go-to hair salon after several miserable attempts of finding the best hair stylist at reasonable price. I don't feel like paying $80 to trim my short hair but dont want it to look stupid as well. This not a fancy place with lots of expensive deco or mirros in SM or WH, however, Sho-san's skill is LEGIT. He's not very chatty (which i like) and very very good at using his scissors. When I saw all of the positive reviews I thought this place was too good to be true. Good service, good results, and good pricing? Yeah right, but I decided to give it a try anyway. Well, all of the claims are true. This place is absolutely amazing. I had their straitening treatment done for a very reasonable price (220 because I had two years of natural growth, normally I believe they charge 200. Other places would charge 400-600 for this treatment) I came out of this place looking gorgeous and feeling confident. They are all very professional and nice. Interior--Quaint, nothing fancy schmancy. Service--Everyone is very nice. I felt like there was a little extra effort in the hair-washing (more so than other places) but resting my neck on the sink hurt. Styling--I had Miki as my stylist and I am really satisfied with the style. It was a little hard asking for suggestions for my long hair because she would either stammer or say, "Mm, I don't know. I say it's up to you." But she somehow made my hair look better than I expected it to anyway. It's like she gave it this strong foundation and built layers around it for a really clean but feminine cut. My only complaint is that she asked me at least 3 times if I wanted my cut even after I said the first time that it didn't matter how short the layers were. I guess I didn't fully understand her because who wouldn't want an even cut? Probably just a misunderstanding... Pricing--$45 for Miki or $40 (for some other stylist, I think). I don't know if Sho charges more. But I've had better servicing at trendier salons for cheaper (including coffee/tea, massage) but I think I may come back to Sho Hair (styling is more important than the little freebies). 5-Stars--I wanted to give it a 4 or 4.5 because Sho Hair Salon isn't a 5-star place (in terms of EVERYTHING combined such as the design and mini-services which some people consider important). I got a horrible hair cut from Miki yesterday. i brought a friend who speak both Mandarin and Japanese fluently to be my translator, Basically i told her i have coarse and natural curly hair, i need a manageable haircut. i even show her some pictures we saw in the magazines. i end up getting a Joe Dirt hair cut and Joe Dirt definitely look better than what i look like now. I was recommended by my future sister-in-law to check out this place for Japanese hair straightening. I had my hair straightened twice previously before. The stylists did a great job but it took over a half a day and it cost me over $500 to get it done. I didn't want to go through that again. However, I wanted my hair straightened for my engagement photo session and after reading Yelp! reviews and taking someone's recommendation, I decided to go for it and set up an appointment with Sho. Sho was very friendly and chatty. I had no language barriers with him and he was very enjoyable having a conversation with. He did an excellent job with my hair and I was very surprised that he finished in two and a half hours! I have been getting the Japanese hair straightening done here for 6 years and I still love it! The Brazillian Blowout Keratin treatment I've gotten elsewhere does not come close to the texture and styling options I have with Sho's hair straightening. Miki and Sho are both awesome, just super nice talented people, but I mostly book with Miki. They'll always ask if you need a trim after straightening, to even things out. But a lot of the time I end up practically needing a whole haircut and Miki will even do that and doesn't charge extra (I just include a little extra in the tip)! I always come out of Sho Hair Studio looking leaps-and-bounds better than when I entered! Convenient parking. They always seem to have tons of open appointments. Easy listening music playing in the background. I get offered water a couple of times, magazines offered while my hair is drying, or Miki will bring me my book if I forgot it at her hair-cutting station. I have been getting my hair straightened for about 8 years, and I have gone to probably 5 different people for this service. The last place I went, the stylist left the chemical on my hair for too long and it completely dried out my hair. I waited about 8 months before daring to try again, and I was recommended to Sho by a coworker. I saw him about a week ago, I had no trouble at all getting an appointment. Sho was amazing! He examined my hair really thoroughly before doing anything, and he asked a ton of questions about the products I use, how often I wash it, how often I color it, etc. He speaks English very well, which made the whole thing that much easier. Once he began the chemical process, he checked on me every couple of minutes to make sure he wasn't leaving it on too long. Overall the experience and the outcome was just what I was looking for. He was extremely attentive and knowledgeable, and also very friendly! He worked fast, I was out in about 2 hours. His price was very fair as well, he charged $180. For reference, my hair is very fine and about 4 inches past my collar bone. I waited the 3 days before washing and I am thrilled with the results. I can wash and go! Just a little leave in conditioner and it air dries sleek and straight. I will be trusting my straitening to Sho from now on! read more

I'm reiterating what other's have said but just to get that out there... if you don't speak Japanese, there will be a significant language barrier. Despite this, all of the hairdressers are nice and try to make you feel at home. The decor, etc is nothing to write home about... it's a bit run down. However I was very amused at the fact that this was a Japanese salon with older people owning/doing the hairdressing yet they had an extensive manga selection (Slam Dunk!? Lol.)... in Japanese of course. I had Miki. She did all that she could. My hair wasn't exactly as I wanted it and she also realized that... we both thought the back of my hair should be layered more. Oh well. Anyhow, she gets props for doing my haircut better than the last lady, though the back wasn't layered. (Btw when she kept saying "thick" I realized she was asking me if she should thin one side of my hair to make it even... so if she's saying thick, that's what she means.)
