Been here twice for laser hair removal after getting laser done in NY for about a year. The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable and prices are reasonable. I'm so happy I found this place and it's conveniently located right downstairs from my Job! FYI there's currently a special running until 12/31/18 if you spend $100 on a gift card you get $20. Today was my second time coming to this Shobba location and let me tell you, if you are not a first time customer, DO NOT expect good customer service ( not from the staff or the manager). I came here to get a Brazilian sugaring done for my trip. I walked into the room and the lady was already rushing to finish up. She was unable to remove all the hair and kept insisting that we use wax. I am allergic to wax and stated that 3 times before starting our session. I got frustrated after 10 minutes and asked her to just do a bikini sugaring since she was incapable of finding a solution to the problem. Then, a coworker of hers KNOCKS on the door in the middle of my session and asks her for her sugar that we were using(which means she did not even finish my bikini session but thinks I don't know that). Just to see what she would do I asked her to actually proceed with the Brazilian and she tells me "sorry my coworker took the sugar". HOW is that even allowed considering the fact that my session is not over yet? I said thank you and walked out. The manager charged me $53. I asked her if I could have the managers business card and she responds with "yeah. That's me" EXCUSE ME? What level of customer service did she attain before her promotion??? I explained that it was very unprofessional for someone to come in the room or even knock while I am laying naked on the bed. I mean where is the privacy?? They have signs in the bathroom enforcing that no one else should be in the room other than the person getting sugared or waxed and the technician. She then tells me "thanks for telling me. I'll note it". I have been to the Shobba in Rockville before and they have WAY better customer service than the M street location. For the price being paid, everyone should expect top notch customer service and privacy. I am highly disappointed by my recent and will not be returning to this location again. read more

I had to come here to talk about how impressed I was at the service I received at Shobha today and always. I've always been a fan- but just the thoughtfulness and safety exhibited during this pandemic has been awesome. They have more safety precautions in place than my own job!! Thermometer test, you have to wash your hands once you enter (not just use hand sanitizer), they wipe down everything the minute you even look @ it, contactless checkout / just everything. They are also always nice and have the best customer service. Tyla is the best. See her the next time you visit. This review is for a Brazilian wax/sugar I have been going to the Shobha DC location since it opened about two years ago, fairly consistently about once every 6-8 weeks. I've now had two scary experiences and I don't think I'll be going back since I just don't feel safe there anymore. The location: Is generally clean and well kept, has the appearance of a high end salon. Although the last time I went the bathroom needed maintenance. The service: They get you in and out in 15-20 minutes which I thought was great, but now I think comes at the sacrifice of care during your service. On two occasions now I've had technicians rip out pieces of skin from the inside fold of my labia. The first time the technician, whose name I can't recall, was very apologetic. When I got home I realized a HUGE chunk of skin was missing, it put me out of commission for a couple of weeks. I went back because accidents do happen and I had been going to for a while at that point....... This last time I had Anita, she yanked very hard and I thought some skin came off but she was nonchalant, put loads of powder over it and kept going. When I got home I had to pick the powder and sugar out of the wound. It was SO GROSS. Needless to say, I am never returning as I'm worried about getting an infection. I've been getting brazilians done with both sugar and wax at different places over the last decade and at no other time has someone ripped off part of my skin. I don't know what the third time is a charm situation would be but I don't want to find out. read more

My experience getting waxed was mediocre, but I have to agree with some of the other comments about Shobha's confusing and inappropriate anti-period policy. Shobha claims this policy is in place for "obvious hygiene reasons," but I've never before seen this type of policy including at very high-end waxing places (certainly not in DC or NYC). There's zero reason they should refuse to wax women with tampons in. Even more upsetting, however, is their policy of wiping INSIDE of women's vaginas WITHOUT WARNING to check for blood as a means of making sure women aren't lying about their periods (so deeply inside, I should add, that it is beyond where one would get waxed and extends beyond the opening of the labia). This is at best completely humiliating, inappropriate, and unprofessional, and at worst violating, triggering, and re-traumatizing given the prevalence of sexual assault. Furthermore, spotting can occur for many reasons including miscarriages, medication, for a full year after getting an IUD, other birth control, surgery, plan B, abortion, sexual assault, etc., and there's already too much shame associated with each (to say nothing of the type of period shaming this "policy" perpetuates). Can you imagine the shame and embarrassment you'd feel if a small trace of blood appeared on the wipe because you'd recently suffered a miscarriage, and you were then forced to choose between disclosing that or simply leaving? Can you imagine how shocking and traumatizing it would feel if you'd been sexually assaulted and someone wiped the inside of your vagina without even warning you? To say I simply won't be back is an understatement. UPDATE: On 6/19/19, my previous review was removed by Yelp moderators because of a complaint from Shobha for "lack of details about my experience." I had a great first experience at Shobha getting a wax, however I went back to get my eyebrows threaded and I have cuts under my eyebrows. I have gotten tiny nicks before when getting threaded but never like this (see photos). The people here are great and very nice and the atmosphere is also good but this experience put a bad taste in my mouth. Perhaps they should train a bit more before doing eyebrow threading. read more

The waxes I've gotten here have been fine, but their policies are extremely discriminatory towards women. They won't wax you on your period which is indicated by tons of signs (even if you have a tampon in) but the most bizarre part is they literally wipe you to check . I don't know about you but you I don't feel like being wiped by someone else to check for my period it's disgusting. Also a "period free" policy is discriminatory and no other waxing place I've ever been to has this practice. Save yourself the violation and go to EWS right down the street! Update to this review! I reached out via email to the address below to express my concerns that I had in fact been wiped inside my vagina at Shobha to "check" for a period. I haven't heard back as to whether that is the actual (disgusting) practice or I was assaulted. The below comment about being "bummed" about the policy is offensive, I'm not "bummed" that Shobha reached into my vagina, I'm angry and I'm looking for answers. ****2nd update!!!**** Shobha, I do not think it was appropriate to post the details of our conversation two days ago. I was appalled to read the depth in which you shared the private information I shared with you, and am stunned you feel my having posted about my experience on Yelp somehow provides you credence to do so. You were aware when we spoke that I had posted on Yelp as you or your employee responded once already calling my sexual assault a "bummer." During our call, you yourself were appalled and shocked that the specialist who saw me went far beyond what you initially described as your policy, and you apologized. Whether or not she is still with your company is irrelevant to the fact that she was in fact your employee at the time of the assault. Lastly, I'd like to mention that just because people haven't spoken up doesn't mean people haven't been similarly impacted or that the policy hasn't been offensive or traumatizing. I learned about this place as a Yelp Elite. I've been having my eyebrows threaded in salons around the world from growing up in California, to living and studying in North Carolina, to living and working in India and Tanzania, to now the DC area. I've paid from $0.50 at amazing places in India (which has the best eyebrow threaders) to no more than $15 anywhere else. I will start by saying that my threading specialist, Sarmila, was very friendly and did an amazing job - one of the best skilled threaders in the DMV area for sure. However, I don't think I could every justify paying $22+tip to get my eyebrows done. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!!! The worst, most terrifying, traumatizing, horrific and mortifying experience of my entire life! I owe it to any woman who cares about her face and eyebrows to not step foot here and run in the opposite direction. I've been getting my eyebrows routinely threaded every month for the last 15 years, and have never experienced an ordeal as I experienced here. I'm SO traumatized. I was a walk in, and was assigned a specialist. When I was sat down, I asked for a mirror and explained to her EXACTLY what I wanted, and started off with: please don't make my eyebrows thinner. She told me she understood. I've been blessed with thick, full middle eastern eyebrows, and just needed a clean up. When she was done, I looked up and saw macerated eyebrows; they looked nothing like mine. She had given herself the complete liberty to remove 3/4 of my ENTIRE eyebrow. I was barely left with a LINE of hair. Did I come to see an eyebrow specialist or a butcher? I've never, ever in my life not been able to look at my face in the mirror like now. I cannot bear look at my (lack) of eyebrows, and I have to live with this horrid experience everyday for the rest of summer, through my sisters wedding. It will take at least six months for my hair to grow back, if at all given the extremity of her botched job. She has destroyed my face, ruined my summer, and I cannot believe someone like her could be hired to touch other people's faces. She should not be allowed near anyone's eyebrows. I cannot change anything about my experience, but if I can spare a single person from going through the suffering I'm enduring, it is my responsibility to warn you. read more

Today was my first time visiting Shobha and I was blown away! One of my coworkers who regularly frequents the shop suggested that I go with her to get her brows done. I made an appointment this morning and was able to be seen early. I had my brows threaded and tinted and they look AMAZING. Jamie at the front desk was SO sweet and hospitable. She even helped me pick out a pomade for my brows and showed me how to apply it. I will definitely be back. read more

I visited Shobha as part of a Yelp Summer of Self-Care promotion (an amazing idea!) and was really impressed with my visit! I came for a brow threading appointment and was booked with Sarmila, who did a fantastic job. I told her that I wanted to keep my brows relatively full and natural, with a small arch, and she shaped my brows perfectly. It was my first time having my brows threaded, and it was a bit uncomfortable but not too painful- it almost felt like having scissors close to my skin. Sarmila cleaned my brows and hands with rosewater wipes before starting, and applied rosewater after to reduce the stinging, which was a nice touch. The whole appointment took about 20-25 minutes. Brow threading usually costs $22, which seemed reasonable for the service, and which I would absolutely pay again. Your first visit is free, and students get 20 percent off services and products, so there's no reason not to check it out! read more

This establishment should be ashamed of itself. I made an appointment for a Brazilian sugaring and when I showed up, I used the restroom and noticed they don't provide any sort of complimentary wipes which I found odd in a place that offers bikini/Brazilians. Back in the waiting room, I heard two of the receptionists talking about someones yeast infection loudly. So unprofessional and likely breaking some sort of confidentiality policy. The worst part of my visit was the procedure, or lack thereof. I waited to schedule this wax until I was off my period but they still refused to wax me because they alleged they saw blood (which could have been cleaned myself if they had provided wipes in the restroom like a normal place). They gave me no real explanation, just said they couldn't wax me and left the room very abruptly. It was extremely rude and embarrassing. I was left in the room to change and the lady came back in WITHOUT KNOCKING to tell me that I could schedule another appointment when I was off of my period, which I had already explained to her I was not on my period. I shouldn't have to explain to any woman that some spotting is completely normal post period. I'm sure most of this company's client base is women. If their policy is anti period, they should be a lot more respectful about it. This lady made me feel like the scum of the earth for having a period and I wouldn't wish that sort of feeling on anyone. Save yourself the potential shame and embarrassment and go to a more professional place that respects their customers. read more

I went here for a bikini wax at the last minute since they were near my office. While their prices were decent and they were quick the actual waxing job was sloppy and missed a lot of sections. Plus the woman performing left wax all over so I spent the day having to literally peel my underwear off anytime I had to go to the bathroom because they were stuck to me. Once you find something that works, don't stray. Yumuna is the only aesthetician worth seeing here. She's great and the price for a wax Brazillian is very reasonable. Plus they offer a three-pack deal which ends up saving a few bucks ($173 versus $60 each) or saves a few more if you choose sugaring over waxing. Shobha's DC store is nice, bright and clean. It always smells fabulous and the girls in the front of the shop are always sweet with scented water and tea waiting for you. I've tried waxing and sugaring here with different individuals and much preferred the results of the waxing. When Shobha first opened in DC they had NY specialists come down to train their DC employees but clearly not all of them adhere to their policies. They're not supposed to thread or pluck stray hairs afterwards but I had one chick who did. Another one did the areas of the Brazillian out of order and ended up rewaxing portions of my skin. That's a no-no. Request Yumuna -- she'll give you five star service. You can make an appointment online and you'll get an email reminder. Otherwise you can drop in just call in advance to make sure Yumuna is working. As for threading, Shobha is way over priced ($22 for eyebrows). Sorry, I can't muster NYC prices for an Old Delhi service when I do a better job plucking my own eyebrows at home for free. read more

Without going into too much detail, because after all, I am a lady... I've had a couple of the services offered at Shobha. A few things to first note. It's a lovely establishment. They offer tea (and I think wine) when you walk in. They have a phone charging station. And the general attitude is very friendly and organized. The face services are done in an open area. They offer numbing cream and work at a decent speed, They provide medication for the skin afterwards if you'd like to avoid bumps and such. All of it is lovely. The private waxing is some of the cleanest I've seen. They take their time and do not double dip. And of course do post wax treatment to make sure you'll recover well. My only hesitation to give 5 stars is that the prices are incredibly high compared to the nail salons that do similar, less fancy work, for half the price. I just can't justify such a regular expense, so I don't go as often as I should, which ultimately leads to extremely painful visits once I actually do. I have found a way to work around this though! Whenever they're training new employees they email out for a call for hairy models. Guys, I'm Persian! I'm as hairy as it comes! So I go in let them practice on me and I get an extremely discounted rate on those visits. But it's not a regular occurrence, but makes paying full price other times a little easier. Ultimately, if you need some hair to be removed, and don't want to risk anything, go here. You won't be disappointed. Just be prepared to shell out maybe more than you're used to, and bring cash for tips! read more

Where to begin.. I was there on day one when it opened and really they do an amazing job. I cant tell you how many compliments I received on my eyebrows, I know right but people really noticed! Not only is Shobha spotless but, they take training very serious! I just think you DC people are being difficult. How is it possible that the training that is done in NY gets rave reviews there and here its not so great, when both cities get the same amazing trainers. Being there the first day, I met several of the women behind Shobha and they were some of the smartest kindest great group of gals, I have ever met,. no goofy salon ego, just take their positions seriously and want to be the best at providing waxing and customer service. ohh DC must you make everything difficult,my advice go there! read more

Not only was she great, but the two women working the desk were friendly and helpful, as well. OK. Shobha, I love you, and I have been waiting patiently for you to open in DC but I had a few problems with my beautician. First, let me say the wax was the least painful wax I have had in forever and I have absolutely NO INGROWNS, NONE, ZIP, FINITO (YAY!!!!!!!) and my lady parts look absolutely beautifuuulll but there were a small issues. I guess my experience in Shobha Soho set a SUPER HIGH standard as to what i expect from my waxing session. :) I asked for a landing strip, she accidentally took the full thing off, and though she deeply apologized for her mistake, I had the option of having a mini strip or taking it all off, the mini strip would be too weird so I asked for it all off, and I now feel like a 12 year old. :( I need the staff to pay more attention please. She should have given me a discount just because of this. :( I also noticed a few stray hairs in the inner lips today (I had my procedure the day before yesterday). I think more waxing and attention to the detail should have been done. I also had to ask for the belly hair removal and for threading of my lady parts afterward, this should either be automatic or I should be asked without having to say so. Also, I don't think so much after-care ointment should be applied. My undies got a bit dirty from the thing and I think she was a bit too generous with the cream. Lastly, love the ambience, love the rooms, the designs, the wax, the locations, etc. etc. etc. but I think the staff needs more training. Bring in your NY Soho people here to train your staff. While the least painful wax I have had in forever, it wasn't the best, and I hope there are improvements for my next hairy appointment. :) read more

So let's start from when I walked in...great customer service from the two receptionist who explained the deals, had a smile and offered a beverage. Then my specialist came to greet me and during our session explained exactly what she was doing before performing the service. This was my first experience of waxing the lady parts and I can tell you, I was nervous. My beautician talked me through it and was mercifully fast. It being my first, I can't really compare on pain/ambiance of other salons but Shobha was clean and bright and they used a new dip stick for each wax dip. I had the pleasure of meeting Shobha and asked her what she felt the salon's differentiating factors are. In addition to the no double dip, she admitted they are a little higher priced, but apparently because the employees get health and retirement benefits, which is kind of awesome. I've been to many salons in the past so this was not my first time. I made an appointment with a new associate, giving me 20% off the already reasonable cost. I also got a 15% off coupon to use on any merchandise for my first visit. However, I thought it was odd that the associate doesn't step out of the room while I undress, nor provide any kind of sheet or towel to cover up areas while they are not being worked on. I later went to their website and read that this is simply how all Shobha locations work, but it made me very uncomfortable to have someone standing there while I undress and not have any covering while we are not actively waxing. And as I mentioned, I've been to lots of other salons and NO ONE else does it this way. The salon is certainly clean, the cost is appropriate, and everyone was professional and friendly. But, as I said, I was rather uncomfortable throughout my visit and that makes this a big IF for coming back...maybe only if I can't find an appointment elsewhere, as a last resort! read more

I was looking for a professional threading place since I am interning here for the summer. I was very pleased as the services reminded me of my favorite threading place back home in NYC (and this place is actually much cleaner). My eyebrows were THOUGHTFULLY threaded and the kind threading artist really took her time and wasn't rushing. Honestly, I see no problem with their policy that does not bikini wax menstruating clients. As a woman myself, I think its highly unsanitary and I would not trust nor respect an establishment that puts the health of their employees at risk. I needed to get my eyebrows threaded while I was in DC, so I looked up a few places on Yelp and decided to go to Shobha. When I walked in, I was surprised to find a pretty upscale spa. They were pretty quick with getting me in even though I didn't have an appointment. The girl who threaded my eyebrows was quick and overall it was a comfortable experience, but I likely wouldn't return because I feel it's overpriced for the quality of threading and shaping I received. read more

After a successful visit two weeks ago for other reasons, I returned to give threading my eyebrows a try. I've got some brows on me, so I've been plucking since I was in my late teens or early twenties. I thought I'd have it done professionally for the first time for the experience, to see if I looked nicer, and to give me something to do the evening before I went into hospital. Since I pretty much just walked in, I asked for either Durga or Yamuna- whoever got finished with her current client first. Yamuna did a nice job, and it only stung a little. But I guess I was expecting more shaping and evening of my brows- and removing the one weird stray white hair, the one weird coarse one...maybe I had the wrong expectations. I looked nice, but not $27 nice. But it was a good experience. Here's where I have the problems: a couple of days after, I was broken out all over where she threaded! AND apparently some of the hairs only broke off, because 72 hrs later, I have coarse broken hairs showing up! It's such a nice place, but this part isn't going very well. Wish I knew what was going on. I think it's safe to say I'll stick to plucking from now on, and just ask Shobha for waxing for other needs. read more

This was my first visit. I was first thrown off at the fact person stays in the room while you disrobe and while you put your clothes back on. I understand that speediness may be an objective here, but it would have been nice to have a little privacy. Even the gynecologist allows you to put your clothes on in private. Then I'm already paying $60 for the wax, there is no reason I should have to hold anything! I shouldn't be asked to wipe anything! Lastly the hand you your recipe to give the receptionist.(Like your at a Chinese carry out SMFH) You pay for the location. Needless to say this experience wasn't what I anticipated. read more

Really awful experience for my first time. The person at the front desk was friendly and got my friends and me in sooner than we thought which was nice. I had originally come in for a Brazilian sugaring but was told I hadn't grown enough yet, so had to get wax instead. I was totally fine with this since I've gotten waxed before. The entire experience was silent, the tech didn't even smile, and stayed in the room with me while I undressed. There was hair left after the appointment which is not the norm for Brazilians, at the very least I should have gotten tweezed or threaded to actually be hair-free. In addition, after the wax was done, the tech did not wipe off all the wax so I left sticky. I now have more irritation/bumps than I've had at other salons. I will not be returning here. read more

Sugaring still hurts--it might hurt a little less than regular waxing? But it wasn't different enough for me to consider going to one over the other. That being said, Michelle did a great job--she was thorough and gentle. The price is within the normal range, but much more than what I was paying at my regular place in NY. Still, that could be because it's sugaring, and competition is almost non-existent. But I got a great deal with the Yelp voucher. Booking was fast and simple. For some reason, DC doesn't have many options for these kinds of services. Maybe important politicians don't need to remove hair? I don't know. Either way, I'm glad that it exists. I also got my eyebrows threaded here. I was loooong overdue. The price was a little high for me, as there's a place back home I love that charges half as much. Here, eyebrow threading runs for $22--I threw it in since I was getting a deal. I also did make use of my 15% products for first-time clients deal. I decided to go with this spa to get a brazilian and my legs waxed due the reviews and the offer they had on here. I also met some of the employees at a event yelp had in September. For my first time getting these services done it was great. My technician was great answered all my questions regarding the after care. She recommended products a well. I booked my next appointment already with her. Can't wait for there Rockville location to open since it will be close to me. The Dupont Circle location is some what hidden. This is a long overdue review. My waxing experience at Shobha has been the best so far. I was always attended by Yamuna at Shobha, DC, and she was really good. I have been getting Brazilians since 4 years now and i have tried enough places to know the good, bad and the ugly. With Yamuna, i was never in too much pain, she manages to get all the hair, and is a thorough professional. It would take 15 mins and i would be done, and the hair would not grow back very soon. Their standards and products have been uniform so far, and I'm very happy to say I've received the same quality service here that I did in NYC.
