First, when you walk in it just looks beautiful. It's not too bright. It's not too dark. My sister's love going there, but there was an incident with the Ramen where there was hair pins and hair. When I walked in it looked really classy but still causal. I was seated immediately. The service was fantastic fast, friendly, and helpful. I ordered a glass of Moscato wine and a Rainbow Roll. Menu has a lot of variety and priced reasonably. Got the yum yum roll and was amazing. I also got the chicken hibachi and it was okay. The yum yum sauce wasn't the same yum yum as other hibachi places I've been too. It was def a little bit water downed. They have Thai food here as well! Which was pretty cool -- i didn't get it but def need to come back to try it. Service was good -- again the waiters/waitress was busy since dining was packed when i went so it was understandable that some things may take a little longer than normal. Since I'm a foodie, I am cautious in being over-boutique for a Japanese and Thai restaurant in the middle of Appalachia where there really isn't a large population of Japanese and Thai people to cook for. I know for a fact this place has tuned its food toward local tastes, since they served a "bam bam" (or similar name) sauce with my food that I really didn't want a part of - it's creamy paprika flavor, not Asian in my book - but apparently everyone local loves. And if you wanna be successful in restauranting, you cater to your clientele. All good. Place is a bit small for seating, with a lot of aisle space to walk around and serve - suboptimal layout, not too much ambiance. Service wasn't as frequent as one might like but it was always there if I needed it. My second tea (which they brew there) came out before I even finished my first. Food... well, it's a good value. First soups came to the table, and before I really even had a chance to drink it, the fried oysters came out as a platter of 5. The oysters were all a bit squishy and weird but I think that's fried oysters. I wanted something more local in context and that fit the bill, so I suffer for it. But it all tasted fresh, not a spoiled scent in the bunch, and nice crunchy freshly fried. And before THAT was even done, out came the main course. As others have said, you get a ton of food for your money. I got steak hibachi, rare, and out came a mountain of meat (with some seared veggies below) and a mountain of fried rice. I can't say the flavor was the most authentic, and I'm quite sure you don't get steak hibachi in Japan without being a millionaire, but again, local tastes. Only one of my steak pieces was too rare for me to eat, but some were a bit underdone. Lesson: order things a bit better done. Fried rice was a bit glompy but not bad overall, mixed with a bit of egg but nothing else really in it. But at least the "fried rice" part of the menu notes a lack of veggies, so it's consistent. The verdict, after all that? If you live here or are here long-term, this is a nice place to change your scenery from American-style food. I highly doubt you'll find better or more authentic Japanese or Thai anywhere else in the area. read more

The server was nice and I think they tried but our food was terrible. A fried rice and steak with a side of veggies- greasy like the oil had not been changed. Bento box with zero wasabi or ginger for the roll, greasy veggies and browned not fried rice. As for the lobster habachi inedible as it was cooked in the greasy. The blue moon, sprite and lemonade and edamame were the highlight. Small town limited options but they gotta feed their community better. Not healthy. read more

My friend and I were visiting Bluefield for vacation and ended up coming to shogun twice in our four day stay! Employees are extremely nice and helpful and the sushi is amazing! They are never very busy, buts it super cozy and quiet! Except for the covers of popular songs playing, but still super nice! The wait for our food both times was never long either! At Shogun, I've yet to find a meal that is not delicious; the service is generally wonderful and speedy, and the staff is almost always very friendly; and the atmosphere is just what you would expect to find in a good Japanese restaurant. It is one of the best locations to eat in Bluefield. The sushi is delicious and generally well-prepared. There is a great variety of sushi, and you get your money's worth. It is, however, sometimes too large to eat in one bite as intended, and the sashimi is not well made. All of their soups--particularly the ramen--is incredibly flavorful and well-prepared. All of their food is wonderful. There is not a time we go that the staff is unfriendly or negligent. Many even remember us from previous visits and greet us very kindly. The service is sometimes slower than expected, but this is typically only when it is very busy at peak hours. The atmosphere is calming and soothing, making for a comfortable meal. The facility is well-maintained. There has never been a time when the tables and seats were not well-cleaned, nor has there been a time when the dishes were questionably cleaned. Shogun is one of my top locations to eat in Bluefield. It comes at a good price, in a central location, with great food, service, and atmosphere. read more

I waited only a few minutes to get seated and the waitress immediately brought me water and a nice young man dropped off a bowl of flavorful broth soup. I asked the waitress the difference in curry and massaman curry and she said the massaman was sweetee....i ordered the regular chicken curry. My food arrived in just a few minutes. The bowl of chicken curry was big! Lots of yummy curry that had just enough heat for me...i usually order 2 or 3 at a Thai place. The only negative was that i think the pieces of chicken could've been softer....it may have been grilled earlier because it had definitely not been stewing in coconut milk all day. As far as Thai goes I had Drunken noodles, pretty good. We also had Chicken fried rice and Hibachi Steak dinner. The latter were just good not exceptional. I've been several times and the hibachi chicken was some of the best I've ever had each time. The service was a little shaky on getting all the orders right, but this was when they first opened up, so maybe they'll get over the growing pains and solve that. Wait staff was at least courteous and very on the ball, and the price can't be beat for what you're getting. Atmosphere is modern and seating is comfortable. I really like the wrap-around benches on the booths. All in all this is a really solid place and a good addition to Bluefield. Seems to be doing good trade every time I've been, so hopefully it sticks. read more

Absolutely perfect sushi, every time. I don't like Thai food, so whatever I got once, I forget, but I didn't like it. But that's me, I don't like Thai. I love sushi, I lived in NY for 50 years where they even had Sushi buffets with nothing else. I've had the Spider Roll, Crazy Tuna, Lobster Roll, Black Dragon, Green Dragon, Pheonix Roll, and the Panther Roll. All excellent! Shogun's sushi is on par with New York's finest. I go here all the time. The food is amazing and a great price for the quality and quantity compared to the other local hibachi restaurants. The service is always great - I've never had bad service here. As an added plus, the have great vegetarian options, which is hard to come by in the area. Their hibachi tofu meal is one of my favorite meals. Add in their sweet potato tempura roll and I'm basically in food heaven. 100% reccomend them. read more

We had lunch there yesterday, Sunday. Very clean, were greeted and seated immediately. Waiter was very nice, friendly, and very interacting. We had an appetizer, the Yum Yum roll..and Yum Yum is correct.. it was the best...big enough for the two of us to share, and the flavors just exploded with every bite. Then came the food... Coconut Chicken with rice, and Thai Ginger Rice with Chicken..Heaven! Both dishes were very generous portions and spot on for lunch. We had takeout boxes and finished the food while watching the last NFL game Sunday night..I think we got a lot of quality food for the price. And we were getting a beverage refill before finishing the ones we had...Super service. I would recommend anyone stop by and have a meal. I don't think you will be disappointed. When I and my family was there, in January, we discovered that they had no heat due to due to a mechanical issue. However, they served us a delicious complimentary soup that helped warm us. The service, while not overly friendly, was adequately attentive. Two of us had hibachi dishes while the other two had the Ramen. It was more authentically Asian than what you get in the grocery store. The portion sizes of our entrees were also quite generous. The food was good, overall. My youngest daughter enjoyed the Japanese sodas that they had to offer. read more

The waiter took our drink order & appetizer order immediately. Once we received our drinks we ordered three speciality rolls & each was so delicious & beautiful to look at.
