Either a poor choice for a roll - barely any eel and an old avocado (rainbow roll), or a bad night for the sushi chefs.

Good service. Not very creative in roll creation. Skimpy on the actual fish. Ordered Kamikai roll- not bad but not as hot as we expected, Fire Dragon - pretty good and Rainbow - not good. Inside is supposed to have BBQ eel and avocado but barely any eel and the avocado was old. Pretty loud in restaurant. Sadly for us, they ran out of egg rolls at 6:15.

Shokai is the only sushi restaurant in Burlington. However, it's great for an Iowa sushi restaurant. Chill atmosphere but a smaller space. They don't have a gigantic menu, but that's expected since they are a smaller locally owned restaurant. I'm a huge fan of spicy mayo and asked for a lot of it. The server only brought one, but when asked for more, he was happy to bring some. When the sushi craving hits ya- this is a great place to go.

I LOVE the matsu roll and the yuokobi shrimp, idk how to spell them and I'm not looking them up. But I've really given them the benefit of the doubt but. I used to think of them as a higher end place to go in town, but that has quickly changed since the moved to the new location... it looks run down and not appealing to the eye, and is not very kid friendly as all the tables are up very high, one time they didn't have enough high chairs so I had to hold my baby the entire time, another time they didn't have enough tall high chairs so my baby had to sit in a short one and I would have to reach down to feed her. I waited 2 hours (waited at home as I called it in) for a carry out got there the 2 hours after I ordered to STILL wait another 30 minutes! I ALWAYS request no ginger or wasabi, to still get it every time, one time my daughter grabbed it off my plate and put it in her mouth!!! My carry out most of the time is all messed up when I get it home and I'm VERY GENTLE with it! Also they have posted if you pay cash you get 4% discount and we did that and didn't get the discount and when we asked she said they didn't do that anymore, but the signs are posted everywhere! Also I've called a straight 20 times in a row several times with no busy tone, I think they just don't answer. The customer service has gotten slightly better, the last few months but before that I hated going in, they were rude and basically ignored you...but it's gotten better the last few months for sure!! If I didn't love the matsu roll this would be a 1 Star!!

I waited a little over 40 minutes for a to go order, and was ignored by staff until other patrons started noticing.

Ruthie's definitely lived up to the hype! We've had this place recommended to us for years, so to…read morecelebrate a big milestone, my fiancé took me here. We were able to snag a last-minute reservation on OpenTable, and the entire experience was wonderful. Our waitress was incredibly attentive--our water glasses were refilled frequently, and even when the restaurant got busy, she made sure to check on us. We were seated in a cozy, intimate circular booth on the side, which made the evening feel even more special. What I'd Order Again: Alaskan King Crab Legs - Pro tip: Order these as a side to another dish instead of as an entrée--it's much cheaper that way! The crab was incredibly fresh, thanks to their flash-freezing process, and it really hit the spot. Lobster Bisque - HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! I added this last-minute when our waitress mentioned that people travel just to try it, and it did not disappoint. The freshly cracked pepper, along with the truffle accents, made this so flavorful and rich. Cocktails - The drinks were fantastic! I had the Tweed Jacket cocktail and really enjoyed it. What made it even cooler was that our waitress actually created a cocktail that got added to the menu when she started working there--so cool! Scallops - Perfectly cooked with a stunning presentation. While I've had better on the coasts, I was impressed given that we're in Iowa. Desserts (HIGHLY recommend the homemade coffee ice cream & tiramisu!) - The tiramisu was amazing, and I could tell it was homemade because I nearly choked on the cocoa powder (the ultimate test!). But the real star? The homemade coffee ice cream--absolutely phenomenal. What I Wouldn't Order Again: Jumbo Crab Cake - It was good, but it had that slightly "old crab" taste and reminded me more of snow crab than the rich, sweet crab flavor I was hoping for. Given that I'm from Seattle, my seafood standards are high, so this didn't quite meet expectations. Brussels Sprouts - Great flavor, but I prefer mine extra crispy, and these weren't quite there. 10 oz Filet Mignon - It was cooked to the right temperature, but it wasn't as juicy as other steaks I've had in Iowa. Good, but not particularly memorable. Other Notes: Shareable Side Dishes - One thing I really liked was that their side dishes are all shareable, so they feel more like appetizers than traditional sides. It makes it easy to try a variety, and I definitely want to explore more of them when I come back! Location & Accessibility - Even though Ruthie's is inside a casino, it's tucked on the side, so you don't have to deal with the cigarette smell. Parking is plentiful, though depending on where you park, it might be a bit of a walk. Bathrooms - The restrooms are located outside the restaurant on the right--not too far of a walk. Final Thoughts: Ruthie's is a true gem, and I can see why it's so highly recommended. The service was outstanding, the food was top-tier, and the small details--from our cozy booth to our waitress's personal touch on the cocktail menu--made the night extra special. It's the kind of place that turns a meal into a memory, and I can't wait to come back.

A little out of the way most times but glad way went the extra mile tonight. I recommend this place 100%!!! The filet lollipops, for an appetizer, were amazing!!! Then came our entrees. All of us got steak and NO ONE was disappointed!!! All done to protection, the way a great steakhouse is supposed to operate. Our server was above and beyond helpful in making our decisions easy and would take his advise time and time again when ordering. Filet was perfect and the Gouda cheese potatoes as a side were to die for!! Definitely go here!!!

With all of the adjustments to everyday life caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, discovering that I…read morecan get sustainably-caught, small-boat harvested, wild Alaskan seafood shipped to my doorstep via this audacious little company in Galesburg, IL is probably the most positive one. Prior to last spring, you would not have been able to convince me that it made sense to spend $120-$130 a month to have 4.5 pounds of seafood shipped to me, but when our standard supply chain broke down and it was nearly impossible to get proteins at the grocery store I started to look for other options. I love seafood, so that is what I looked for first, trying a couple of "fresh from ... (name your place)" options. I dipped my toe into the Sitka Salmon Shares world by buying a "bounty sale" box of sablefish, also known as black cod. I did a side-by-side comparison of the SSS sablefish and another Alaskan seafood company that ships throughout the US and the difference in quality was astounding. I signed up for SSS's premium seafood subscription shortly thereafter. SSS is a different kind of company - a "Community Supported Fishery" akin to the CSA's you might be familiar with from your local farmer's market. While they project the contents of each monthly box ahead of time, the mix of what you receive depends upon the harvest. No matter what type of seafood you receive, you can expect impeccable quality, as the CSF model allows the small boat fishermen-owners and trusted partners to handle their catch in an artisanal way -- eg, line caught, immediately bled and put on ice, processed and deep frozen for shipment. All fish is sushi-grade, and in most cases you get traceability back to the boat that caught it and the date of harvest. Does all of that matter? I maintain that it does ... for example I have never received a piece of fish from SSS that was bruised from rough handling, and that does indeed make a difference in taste and texture. If you are a fan of seafood check out their "Freezer Sale" -- right now I believe they have a salmon sampler and albacore tuna available. I bet that if you do give a freezer sale box a try, you will soon find yourself poring over their subscriptions trying to decide which one to pick. If it's not the best fish you've ever had? They have fabulous customer service, contact them and surely they will do right by you. As for me? I expect I will be a subscriber for life.
