I love this place for many reasons. The key section is the best anywhere, in ALL aspects. Next-amazing selections in everything and you can buy just one nail, screw or. whatever. Also lots of non hardware stuff. From kids stuff , greeting cards , art supplies to gift items, candy and more. I guess if you want ten bags of something a big box store would be better, but how often is that? Now for the best part ,they have a nice, friendly cat ,wearing a bow tie and supervising everything. I really hate giving bad reviews. However this needs to be noticed, hopefully by the owner because this is about him Specifically. I moved to South Portland 40 years ago when I bought a " fixer upper " on D street. I started buying my supplies at Shoppers Tru Value which was great, it was within walking distance. While I was often not greeted nor was I asked if I needed assistance, I kept shopping there. It was convenient. Ok flash forward to last weekend, while I've moved and now get my home repair supplies at another Tru Value in South Portland where I'm always greeted and asked if I need assistance. I was working on a painting project and I asked my friend to pick up some supplies. She went to Shoppers, and got the wrong things. I went to return them on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 pm. I walked up to the door and the owner literally locked the door in my face, no word or anything, he just locked it. I had to mouth if they were closed, all I got was a nod, he might have said yes but the nod was so rude I might not have noticed. He then just turned and walked away. Now if he'd said yes, please come back tomorrow or if he'd said I'm sorry we are closed, I'd have been fine with that. But the rudeness I've experienced over the years and having the door locked literally in my face, I've made the decision to never spend another dime there. It's sad because I've bought many things and spent thousands of dollars there, heck I even adopted a cat from there, I will not return. Tru Value on Cottage Rd or Scarborough will now get my money ! read more

This place is located in the Millcreek shopping plaza in South Portland, some might call it Alden's cave , it's a hardware store locally owned ' yes Support small business each and every day if we can keep our money in our local economy! , this is a maze of everything you would need for Home projects etc, this is one of them stores ' that literally carry everything you might need , every time I go in here , Jessica is always there to point you in the right direction, so helpful and always does her job with a smile on her face, it seems like you can find almost anything in this store..This might be the best locally owned hardware store around.. I came in here looking for Frog Tape (painter's tape), and was blown away by the breadth of product in the store. Not only is it a fantastic hardware store, but it's also a home store, a crafts supply store, and more. They even have some locally-made hot sauces and salsas up front! Everybody was helpful and knowledgable, and the prices were fair. I found what I was looking for plus a few other items, including my new favorite pair of socks. I went here for the first time today. While debating which item to buy, I was greeted by a cat in a bow tie that immediately wanted to be friends and be pet. This is the best store for everything I need. I am constantly amazed at the product lines that are offered here including millwork and 2X4's in the back. I buy all my power products here including two lawn mowers and our snow blower along with propane heaters and all the bags of feed for the animals we have in our back yard. Tom and Jessica, and all employees, are helpful and not too busy to assist. We also have our screens redone and paint mixed along with all my electronic shop supplies. Don't need to go anywhere else. I'm in love with this hardware store. It has all of the typical hardware store things, plus craft supplies and often times a cat (for adoption)! My husband and I have both been to this store more times than we would like to admit in the past few months. I think he went 5 times in one day? They have had everything that we've needed -- including tool rentals. I'm grateful this store is around! I've had no issues with customer service. Absolutely horrible experience with these folks. I took a screen in to be repaired, and they bent the frame so much that it no longer fits in the window. When I took it back to complain, and see if they could fix it, the same man who accepted the screen from me the first time told me they didn't have the equipment to repair a screen that size. He remembered the screen and admitted they had bent the screen and done a lousy job. He gave me a refund of the $21 they had charged me, and referred me to a window store, that referred me to a second window store, that said the frame was too bent to be saved. Bottom line: True Value gave me a refund on what they had charged me to repair the screen, but that in no way compensates me for their destroying the screen frame. I am now going to be out around $150 for a replacement Anderson screen that was in absolutely perfect condition before I went to True Value. (The frame was in perfect condition, there was a small tear in the screen itself.) I will NEVER set foot in this hardware store again. read more

This place is family owned and there is usually one of the owners in the shop at all times. I love that they have EVERYTHING you need. Everything from tools to fabric. I often buy small gift items and greeting cards here too! Supporting a local family owned shop is the best. read more

I will admit I should go here more often than I do. Honestly, I am in the area so often that it is like not visiting my mom even though I visit all my friends around her house. This hardware store is so much more than a hardware store. First, you can get pet/child safe snow melt for about $5 less than a store very nearby, same brand. Second, you can get a tea pot, even one that is porcelain with pretty flowers. While you are at it, grab a cute cup or mug too. Need knitting supplies, they have you covered. Need Eco-Smart products that are pet/child/environmentally safe to use around your house? Gotcha covered there too and less expensive than online for sure. They have crafting supplies, wrapping paper, sink strainers, pots and pans, brooms, gardening tools, power tools, they make keys, they rent out equipment like power washers and augers, they have screws and nails and mailboxes... all in this small space. Oh! and you can pick up home spa treatment items for mom, a card and even locally made salsa and other items. Did I mention they also have an employee who fosters cats/kittens for Maine Lab Rescue who brings them in to help get them adopted out? yep, they got that too. So seriously, stop in. The store is stacked to the rafters with things and I always find something else there that I had no idea was around. Can't find something, ask! The staff has always been kind and helpful. read more

This hardware store has been around since I was a kid and while the other nearby stores have come and gone, this one has remained in the same place. I can remember getting paint there with my dad years ago because it was closer to Walmart or Home Depot. I also can recall getting gum balls out of they fancy gum ball machine. They do have a nice selection of items and it's a very large shop. However the past few times I've been in there I get "the stare". Maybe it's because I'm young and they think I'm up to no good and bound to cause some sort of a ruckus? They must have a problem with shoplifting because I've seen so many signs about how your being watched and shoplifting is a prosecutable offence. I'm afraid to put my hands in my pocket out of fear they'll think I'm stealing something! I've been to a bunch of True Values but this one isn't the best of the best. read more

The staff are knowledgeable, friendly, and go out of their way to help you out. I think some people these days expect to be treated as if they are the only customers on the planet. A+ customer service, I call around to find a store that sells beeswax. I make the drive over here after being told they do and I get there. Ask one person where I can find it. He looks for 30 seconds and can't find it. States it must have been moved and hands me to someone else who looks for 2 minutes and can't find and says it must have been moved sorry and walks away. Wonderful locally owned store with lots of great things I need and some I don't know I need until I get there!

These guys take an awful lot for granted. They are part of an endangered species - small, local, privately owned hardware store serving a pretty small community. With lots of big corporate competition from behemoths like Home Depot and Lowe's not far away they could easily be put out of business if they don't mind their p's and q's. Surprisingly, however, their customer service is downright awful. Staff are rude, dismissive, unhelpful. One was nasty to my kid when they were just admiring the kittens they had in a cage up front by the window. Do we expect a kid not to get excited about seeing kittens? Another time I was browsing for an electrical item I needed and it was 5:45 pm - fifteen minutes before closing time. They shut off half the lights in the store and one of their employees came to the aisle where I was looking and asked if I was done. Not "can I help you find something?" "Are you done?" (Read: "get the heck out of here we want to go home."). On another occasion I had to return a light bulb I bought that was the wrong size and exchange it for the right size. Again I was given rotten treatment and made to feel like I was some kind of jerk for this. I recommend you drive a little farther to get excellent customer service somewhere else. I have had very positive experiences at places such as Maine Hardware in Portland, and even Home Depot. Now I'm usually one to support the little guy but hey if you don't want my business I'll go elsewhere. Being nasty to my kid was the last straw. I'm out. read more
