Need to read the expiration date as items in several departments are still being sold. While there are several check out counters only a few are open. With the parking lot on an uphill grade carts can roll down the grade hitting parked cars. This market doesn't have a salad bar and the only prepared food is chicken. The devote is no where near recently built ShopRites. Well worth the extra time to patronize the Union ShopRite ion Union also on Route 22. I've come to this Shoprite location as total of 2 times now. But times, my experience was consistent with my experiences at other locations. Stock - It was great. Most items I wanted was in stock and easily found. Produce looked good as did the meat items. Layout - Good. It was laid out in a consistent manner. Some locations have their layouts in odd configurations but I'm pleased to say this one was normal. Space - Very spacious. At no point during the shopping process was I hesitating to go down certain aisles because I was worried about another shopper's cart blocking my way. I was able to get in and out of each aisles smoothly and quickly. They also have what looks like a whole new area to the store. It could be old as I'm new to this location. This part houses the pharmacy, the rest of the dairy aisle and haircare, pet stuff and other miscellaneous items. Pharmacy - The pharmacist is nice and seems to have a good rapport with the regulars. I interacted with her when I went for my one dose COVID vaccine. They have a list by the way with the name and appointment time and so it's easy to check in. I waited about 10 minutes and then she dosed me and had me wait at the table for the required 15 minutes. I did a thumbs up as did she and went on my way. It was incredibly easy to complete the whole process. Checkout - I've been through self checkout and a regular checkout lane. Both are fine and fast. Also the self checkout lanes feature the short and long belts depending upon the size of your order. I greatly appreciated that feature. It only took me about 5 minutes to go through self and 10 minutes to go through the regular lane. All lanes are clearly marked along with which aisle to stand in for each lane. Employees - They were polite and that's all I ask for. Finally, they have plenty of self scanners around that also double as a way for you to load coupons to your card if you forget to do so at home or don't want to put their app on your device. Quite possibly the worst grocery store in New Jersey. It is laid out in a bizarre fashion, making things very difficult to find. There are long lines at the checkout, except for the self check out. The self check out is bizarre. I work in computers and I find the self check out at ShopRite counterintuitive and confusing. I asked to see a manager. I said,"If you're keeping data on the self check out, you might want to note that the 'I have my own bag," button (which is very important in NJ), is tucked away down near the change language & accessibility button. Also, I've had to ask for help 3 times because of the sensors in the bagging area. Each time the associate comes over with their key and makes an adjustment, wasting their time and mine." I was told very rudely, "You're the FIRST complaint we've had about the self check out!" I started to say the words, "You're clearly not tracking data, as each problem reported represents a larger number of unreported similar issues." Yup. That's what I started to say. But I only got as far as "You're clearly..." when the manager took a step towards me and shouted, "I'm clearly WHAT?" in a hostile tone, in a physically threatening stance. So... great manager you have there. I spent $78.03 in the store that day. Please tell me, how much do I have to spend to be treated with even a modicum of common courtesy? We ordered a custom cake for my niece's birthday this past weekend. The first photo ("what we asked for) is the cake design we requested, and the second photo ("what we received) is the cake we received. We were PROMISED that the baker could replicate the first photo. Instead of individual cupcakes, we received pull-apart cupcakes that were CAKED ON with MOUNDS of icing. The unicorn hair, especially, was done with little to no care; it's honestly sloppy. And to top it off, they refused to give us a refund, even a refund of half of the amount that was paid. Classic example of what you asked for vs what you got. We shouldn't have been promised that the first photo could be replicated, and we should've received at least half of our money back because we did not receive what we asked for. read more

It took me an hour to get 5 items because of how packed and disorderly this shoprite is. After getting my 5 items I had to stand in line fo another 30 minutes because the 15&10 items or less line had been turned into the 65 and older checkout lanes(which I'm not against) but that's a stupid idea to change those two lines. Worst experience! Longest lines and I almost always have an unpleasant interaction with a staff member. Courtesy staff are simply not courteous, don't try to help find things, and can put a damper on the overall shopping experience. This supermarket is HUGE, If you know this supermarket from back in the day they've expanded. Great variety and pricing. This is the closest Shoprite to me and it's the smallest one as well (it seems so). I have no complains, I rather come here than the one in East Orange and it's such a laidback atmosphere coming in here. On August 25, 2018 I visited the Hillside, NJ Shop Rite. I went to the Fish Department. I was the only customer waiting, while the 2 employees behind the counter held a conversation and acted like they didn't see me, even though one of them was facing me. I waited a minute to see whether or not if they would come and give me service, well they didn't. I than said excuse me can I get some help over here. One of the ladies look at me and said to me once I finish my conversation I will help you. Once she finish her conversation about her Friday night, she came over to help me. I order 3 lobsters, she slam them on the scale to weight them. I took the lobster and continue my shopping. But felt real uneasy about the hold situation. I went to customer service and asked to speak to the store manager. The manager came and I told him the incident that happen, he inform me to call the 1800 number about this incident if I wanted something done about the incident. Once I finished with the store manager I went to check out. I look in the bag that the lobsters was in, and one of the lobster was dead. That was enough for me in Shop Rite. I walked out of Shop Rite with nothing. All the groceries that I had in my cart was left there in the cart. I sat and waited for the rest of my family to come to the car after they purchase there items. I work to hard for my money to come to your store and to be treated like I'm doing something wrong and you still want me to spend my money in that store. I don't know who do the hiring in your stores, but something needs to be done. And for the store manager to come and say to me to call a 1 800 number when he's the store manager. Something is wrong!! The cashiers there do not know it is their job to help customers. One visit two female cashiers thought it was their jobs to gossip and give attitude. Another visit, a cashier refused to bag and told my son to do it. My husband stood around the deli and never got served because the deli workers ignored him. This attitude is the norm. This location was so unprofessional. I arrived at. 9:10pm. The seafood attendant Julia was in the area spraying the floor. I attempted to get two pieces of Catfish. I was advise "Bro you to late". Some cereals, Quaker items and some frozen routinely have a 2 month expiration date. I recently spoke w manager about an item that was expired and she promptly gathered those items. The next day I checked same brand and found that they were not all taken off the shelf or worse, the manager may have returned those items to shelf. As a shoprite customer of many decades, I'm beyond shocked at the atrocity that was committed by the shoprite branch in Hillside, NJ. My father bought a rotisserie chicken on 1/18/18 and almost ate two METAL SCREWS that were in the Perdue chicken!! Immediately he contacted the management team of the Hillside Shoprite and his concerns weren't even acknowledged. Its been a week already and no action has been taken. I for one am absolutely distraught by this. And the lack of response and promptness on this matter is unacceptable. The store Manager, Nigel Johnson, hasn't made the slightest attempt to correct this issue. Who knows how many damaged goods of this sort they're selling to other consumers! This should NOT be the type of leadership or quality standard that Shoprite should be upholding. In fact, such carelessness poses a true physical threat to the health of many. This place was ooohhh-kay, but nothing special, kind of old and out-dated and not in the best looking area. Later I found a Stop & Shop in Elizabeth I think it was - not sure (?). I'm not from or live in NJ, was just there for a couple days, what is up with these old grocery stores built in 1965 that look like they haven't been updated since 1978??!! Sunday evening 12/16/18 came to shoprite in Hillside where I do all my grocery shopping typically 2 times a week. I always go to the seafood department and get fillet pieces of the Atlantic Salmon. Most of the time it's already cut into fillet pieces and when it's not they cut me 2 pieces into a fillet for me. Never ever have a problem. One of the ladies who works there is so kind and always greets with a smile and when I go there she knows exactly what I want already and gives them to me or if needed, cuts them for me, tonight there was another lady (African America, heavy set) with a horrible attitude. I told her I'd like the Salmon and asked her to cut it into a fillet for me and she said No they have already been cut.. and closed the window for the fish and just walked away. I processed to tell her that I can there all the time and if it's not cut the lady will cut it for me and she said "well I'm not cutting it, it's already cut" they were huge pieces literally so big that it can be cut into 4 pieces of fillet. My knives at home will not cut through it and that's why I ask them to do it. Again never had a problem and always had great service at the seafood department. Tonight was another story. You shouldn't have people who don't commit to customer service working with customers. Her attitude is disgusting and unacceptable. If she's having a bad day and a bad attitude she should've went home rather then working in public with an attitude like that. I will be sure to tell everyone that I know personally at work, friends and family to stay away from the seafood department of Hillside until they get some friendlier people to work for them! read more
