The check out folks aren't rude to your face but if you are a middle aged white person they go VERY...VERY slow when it is your turn with the cashier. If you must shop at this location try to get in line with younger racially mixed folks so you can move on out more quickly. If you have transportation, the alternative is to go to one of many other Shop Rite stores. For example: in Springfield/Millburn, Gillette/Stirling, etc. etc. The best Shop Rite stores I've seen (modernization, wider aisles, HUGE selection, attentive staff, and all with very competitive pricing) are in Bridgewater NJ and if you catch them on the right day in Elizabeth, NJ. This place is terrible. The floors are filthy. I feel like everything they sell must be mishandled, since they don't take the time to mop the floor. Here are some other things that bothered me about this location: 1. While looking for some sliced cheese, I found two different packages of the same brand of cheese. This puzzled me, so I decided to check the expiration dates. One package expired on December 11, 2010!! Today is March 9, 2011. EWW! 2. Several products I inspected had dust on them or were damaged. Who wants to buy dusty or damaged food?! 3. The clientele leave something to be desired... 4. As do the employees! My cashier, Laura- needed some common sense or maybe to quit doing drugs. First, she was sooooo slow ringing up the person in front of me. Then, when she rang up my items, her moving conveyor belt left everything out of her reach when she was bagging. To compensate for this, she took my package of FISH and started using it as an extension for her arm. This wouldn't have been so bad, but she was slamming it on the checkout space so she could reach my yogurt. When I gave her a dirty look, she said, "I can't reach. I guess I probably shouldn't have used your fish, but this order separator instead." UM YEAH! read more

I walked into a dimly lit produce section that smelled musty and was missing produce bags. I turned around and walked out.

I went in today at 12 noon and no fish was out in the fresh fish department. Midday!! if I could give them negative stars i would.

Place is really a dump. All the workers seem to be not customer oriented. Check out is always real slow. However the prices are the best around, and that's why people shop here. There are several other Shoprites around the area, and all of them have the same low prices but are much cleaner and better staffed. This place needs a renovation (and new management) bad. read more

Bought a package of herring salad this morning at Bound Brook, only to discover when I got home that it had been opened. No problem, I should have checked it more carefully. Called Bound Brook and told them that I live by the Watchung store and could I just return it there. Customer service said yes. I tried calling Watchung at 322-6410 but they were not answering their phones for some reason. Drove to the store and had to deal with a nasty person who gave me a lecture about "Perishable items need to go back to the store you purchased it and I am not supposed to return it but I will this time. NEXT time....you cannot do it here". When I told her that I tried calling but no one answered...I got the good old..HM..Hmmmm. Telling you...give "certain" people a little bit of power and it goes right to their heads. I am sure that if I was a "certain" person, she would have not given me a hard time or issue at all. Management in this store is terrible. This store used to be my primary store until an act of racism by a deli employee towards me threw me for a loop. When reported to management, they said they would review their tapes and get back to me. After a week, I called to be told that they did see the incident however they would review it with the employee. After contacting the district manager and yet another week goes by without a return call. Finally spoke to the DM to be told that he did speak to the employee, who remembered the incident. Employee said he was working two departments and that was the reason the incident occurred. When I told the DM that he was NOT working two departments and ONLY working the deli, I got an apology from the DM and told to return to the store for a $10 gift card. I told him that I did not need a gift card and he should give it to an elderly person who is shopping on my behalf. I no longer go to that deli and will drive to Union or Bound Brook for a better staffed, better managed and a cleaner deli. Well worth the extra 10 miles or so. read more

To say that this store needs a top to bottom overhaul is being incredibly gracious . This place is a dump . Dark , dirty , disorganized ..... totally uninviting with zero curb appeal. Ok , enough of the positives . Stepping inside is shockingly depressing. No pharmacy , limited bakery , bare minimum produce dept . , a deli that , quite possibly , might be the absolute worst of the ShopRites in New Jersey . Poorly labeled shelves , no creativity whatsoever , end cap displays are non-existent. Specials are indistinguishable. The crew here just goes through the motions . I'm trying to find a positive.... ok ....prices are better than Stop 'n' Shop and ShopRite in Stirling but those stores are pristine in comparison . In all fairness , the cashiers are competent, helpful and, for the most part , pleasant enough . The deli staff is undoubtedly as bad as it gets . Rude , inattentive and lazy only begin to tell the story . Listen to the customer ..... take their order .... the computer does the hard work ... all you have to do is manage not to slice a finger off .... really not as taxing as you all make it out to be . This store probably needs to follow the lead of most of the other stores in this failing strip mall and close . What a shame . A little vision goes a long way but I think they're blind . read more
