if I could give this business zero stars I would. I ordered two takeout sandwiches last night. There were three people in the restaurant. That's it. During dinner. That's sad. A $25 Reuben should be amazing. My bread was greasy and soggy because they couldn't take the time strain the sauerkraut. The dry turkey meat was lumped in the middle of the sandwich. It was small. I guess they are putting the $$$ increases on their customers and lowering the quality of their food. My sandwich was so disgusting and in soggy pieces I had to throw it out ! $50 for two sandwiches and they were awful. I don't mind paying good money for good food. But this was far from that. After speaking with the owner, I was shocked and appalled that he was so careless in his business. He was more concerned about himself and his profit margin. I work hard for my money too. When I told him I was not happy he told me that I should take it to yelp and write a review if that's what I felt like I needed to do. So here it is. Hands-down the worst sandwiches I've ever had. Definitely has gone down hill. If there are three customers in your store and there's five people working the very least you could do is make a decent sandwich. I will not be returning to Goodmans. Was in the area a d decided to get Pastrami sandwiches to go. Old style deli and nice people. Smelled delicious and they had a decent crowd for lunch. Each sandwich came with a pickle. Good pickle although I wish it was a sour. We each got a Cel Ray soda as well. Got home and the sandwich was delish. I went full fat while my Wife went lean. Will definitely come here again. Thanks to Ellen from Ellen Loves Pastrami for introducing myself to Goodman's Deli. The matzoh ball soup was " right on" and definitely will be ordered again on my next visit. I also ordered the Turkey, Corned Beef and Tongue triple decker sandwich. This amazing sandwich was perfect and definitely the best sandwich that I ever experienced at any deli. Besides ordering a small order of fries, I also sampled a delicious sweet kugel. The pickles were fresh and plentiful. Service was wonderful and the servers here are friendly and professional. I can't forget to mention, Don the owner. He is a true deli maven who actually cares about his customers and the food quality and quantity. Came here for a late lunch after a doctor's visit in the area. Good food in an old school type deli. Took me back to my childhood growing up in Brooklyn and working in a similar style deli. Soup was very good, the corned beef was very well prepared on good rye with proper spicy mustard. The square knish was put in the microwave which should be illegal with steep penalties. All in all a good place to fill a craving for a high sodium meal with a little schmaltz. Staff were friendly and welcoming. read more

Love their comfy and local atmosphere. Server was nice and friendly. Most importantly, their food was amazing. We had a hearty soup with dumplings in the beginning, which was perfect for a bit cold weather, and their famous pastrami sandwich ( junior size). They use a combination of the premade stuff with the tiny potato cubes and then add in large chunks of their corned beef. Big serving of home fries, nice mix of crispy and tender, AND well seasoned! My family chose this deli soon after arriving to New Jersey from Georgia. We have poor attempts at deli in Atlanta, but nothing like this. We were seated right away as we were early for lunch on a Friday. The one server did his best to keep up with everything. We had the obligatory Dr. Brown's soda. As appetizers, we ordered the lathes and chopped liver. Both delivered as promised, though the liver could've used a bit more seasoning. My wife's half sandwich came with a nice bowl of soup. My daughter ordered the junior pastrami. I had the triple decker with pastrami, corned beef, and tongue. That sandwich came with Russian dressing and cole slaw. This sandwich was huge and tasted like it was from heaven. Nothing beats it. We were going to order a small sandwich to go for my brother, but there was no need due to the size of the sandwiches. The prices are higher than most people expect to pay for a sandwich. However, for this preparation and these portions, this is the price I expect to pay. In the interests of full disclosure: I know next to nothing about Jewish cuisine. I believe there are restaurants that serve meat dishes, and those that serve exclusively dairy. When I was in California, near San Diego, there was a restaurant I used to regularly patronize with my friends (the name escapes me unfortunately, all these years later) that served delicious, overly-abundant pastrami sandwiches. That's where I first had Kasha Varnishkes (buckwheat groats, bowtie pasta and fried onions), which I came to love. It was there in San Diego that I also acquired a love for Matzoh Ball Soup. Back East, I ate once at deli-style Harold's in Parsippany, and so much food was served...which, of course, I tried to eat in 1 sitting...that I was almost physically ill on the drive home. My other experiences with Jewish cuisine were through my late friend Sam, an Orthodox Jew. We worked together, and he was a lot older than me, but we both loved old movies. When he learned of my love for The Godfather, he casually mentioned to me that the late Richard Castellano, the character actor who played Clemenza, had been his best friend since childhood. I responded, "Yeah...sure. And Cagney's my great uncle." Sam then showed me a snapshot of the 2 of them on a vacation in the Bahamas--- a bathing suited Castellano lolling poolside with Sam sitting a few feet away from him, peering intently into the camera. Ok, I was convinced. When Sam retired, we would meet regularly at a Kosher restaurant in Teaneck (a town where I spent the first 3 years of my life). I believe it was a dairy restaurant on Cedar Lane. On entering, and observing the Orthodox clientele, I hesitantly asked Sam, "Should I be wearing a Yarmulke in here?" Sam replied, "I should probably be wearing one," which really didn't answer my question, or reassure me. All I can remember of the cuisine is that they served meatless pizza, tuna fish (which beat the gefilte fish that Sam had once recommended to me), and I was heartened by the fact that they had Bosco chocolate syrup soda, which I had loved as a kid. I ate the food readily enough...I guess it was ok...but it was disappointing, considering my memories of the place outside San Diego. (As an aside within an aside, Sam said that Castellano didn't appear in Godfather II because his working relationship with Francis Coppola had been less than positive. I obviously can't say; Coppola has said things publicly that make Castellano sound like a nut. When Sam died of terminal cancer, hours after I had visited him in the hospital, Ardell Sheridan, Castellano's widow...she played Clemenza's wife in the movie...was the one who called me to let me know. I have an autographed copy of her book "Divine Intervention and a Dash of Magic," which is dedicated to several people, but first and foremost to my friend Sam. Anyway...) Since my good memories of Jewish cuisine outweigh my bad, I decided to give Goodman's a try. I ordered on-line, a process which was fairly easy, although I was a bit alarmed that you had to click a specific amount for the tip or click to leave a "No Tip." I'm not up on tipping etiquette (I think I'm in agreement with what Mr. Pink had to say about it in Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs"), but I didn't feel comfortable having someone handle my sandwich knowing I had decided on the "No Tip" option. So, being something of a coward, I clicked on a substantial tip. When I arrived, the food was ready. Although the place was busy, the woman at the counter was friendly, efficient, attentive. Prices were fair, given the amount of food I ordered. Not so much food that I would become physically ill trying to consume it all in one sitting (although with the belated "wisdom" of old age, I probably would have just put some aside for another meal the next day), but certainly more than enough. A turkey sandwich on rye (very good), French fries (there were too many of these, and I didn't finish), a potato Knish (I recently had a knish someone brought to my job that tasted like a damp, bland potato pillow; Goodman's Knish, by contrast, was very flavorful, although I'm still not sure I'm a fan of the Knish), a pickle, and a Brownie (good, but not great). They close mid-afternoon, so this isn't a place for dinner. But there are booths for those interested in lunch, and they seem to be doing a thriving business. Probably it's unfair to rate a place based on 1 visit (although I've left plenty of reviews, positive and negative, based on 1 visit; if it's a positive review, it means I'll be back...negative? It's one and done), but their menu is actually pretty extensive, and I'm definitely planning to order from here again. I'd actually like to come at lunchtime, sit down in a booth, and order the Matzoh Ball Soup. There are a ton of sandwich options, salads, sides, soups, burgers, blintzes, omelettes, pancakes, bagels, etc. And sitting down in a booth, I'll feel better in my own mind about leaving that "substantial tip." read more

The service from the staff at the counter, Jen, and another female, are both excellent. The owner has an attitude problem, and needs to remember that at the end of the day, his consumers are regulars. And to have an issue like this, where my food is dry, obviously overcooked to the point it's almost burnt, and you're telling me they're both the same? Nahhh... take the loss, replace the food, and respect your customers. One of the reasons I don't like going there, dude destroys the ambiance of a family owned deli. Now that I've ordered more food from Goodman's, my mind has changed. Their deli meats are great, especially the roast beef. We've never had an incorrect order. The sandwiches are enormous, but they do offer a junior version on some. Still huge! Lol. Go figure, mozzarella sticks and marinara sauce are spot-on delicious! I like that they offer lean corned beef, but we choose the regular, which is lean enough in my opinion. I asked NJ.com to review Goodman's because I keep seeing reviews of other Jewish delis from them, and they skip over this great place. PS: The turkey burger was okay but not enough spices. Nice enough people own and work here. The most popular sammich is pastrami. I went with corn beef (lean is +$2 up charge). The matzo ball was pricey as well for a smalp bowl. Sammich was good. To grill the bread they also up charge +$2; bizarre since the bread wasn't toasted. $27 for a small sammich and bowl of soup. Food tasted good. Too many places in the area more affordable. read more

You might not expect a NYC quality Jewish deli in a strip mall, but that is what this is. The potato pancakes were great. I would say that the Cabbage and brisket soup was to die for. Goodmans as an absolutely favorite of ours - they never disappoint! You can really taste the quality and care put into every dish. Some of the best hot pastrami, potato pancakes, and matzah ball soup in all of NJ. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu here. My new favorite is the Italian beef with hot peppers, I was blown away with how big it was and it was absolutely delicious. The Italian beef is pretty good. i think they would sell many more if they would advertise as people in jersey have never heard of it. Once they try it they will be hooked. i am from chicago so i know good italian beef The meats are cut on a slicer pretty thin which is a Chicago thing...not hand sliced. I grew up on this style which i like but it may not suit people in this area who are mostly used to hand carved. i don't think that they brine their pastrami or corned beef which is a no-no. First I feel terrible for leaving a poor review and I don't think I have anything to say that is positive. Goodman's highly recommended to us and sadly VERY disappointed. BEWARE We had lunch there today. The pastrami thickly cut, not dry but not moist, tasteless except for the edges. The Russian dressing definitely from a bottle. The cole slaw, thinned out mayo with bits of cabbage. IF the rye bread was fresh...it is horrible. I'm confused how they even stay in business. I see reviews from people loving their food - if you are going to drive go to Deli King in Clark. Health Salad and pickles on each table. While there I saw a man not eat his chopped liver. For chopped liver, the best is Livingston Bagel. The best bagel, nova and cream cheese - Livingston Bagel and Bagel Chateau in Westfield. Pick carefully where you decide to eat! Goodman's did not feel clean, filthy floor, seat yourself and find your own menu. Menu - LARGE selection - but at least for some of the prepared foods they use other vendors. In the decade I've known my husband, who grew in Mountainside and is a frequent visitor to Goodman's, he only JUST took me to try their incredible sloppy joe corned beef sandwich. I was offended he waited this long. WOW. It was worth the $18 to make it "lean" because corned beef can be fatty and these sandwiches can be heavy.
