In a day and age when I could choose to spend less money on overnight floral delivery from Amazon prime, on groupon, or have a coupon for pro flowers, I choose to spend my money at a local business to support them. I expect a minimum of manners and appreciation of my business. I found the opposite here. I called for a last minute order for Valentine's Day for my mother. It also happens to be the anniversary of my Father's death. I asked if they had an arrangement around $65. He said "not much for that price"... funny because their website has categories according to Price. Under 50, $50-$60, $60-$80. He suggested something and I agreed, gave him the address. When he realized it was a gated community, he said "you realize it's our busiest day and that a gate is going to slow my drivers down. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE ma'am." At which point I realized that my $65 wasn't enough to please them or make their time worthy. I told him to "not worry about it as I don't feel my business is valued." At which point he hung up on me. Virginia Beach Florist at hilltop just received $125 of my business because their staff was incredibly accommodating, friendly and says they deal with this gated community on a regular basis. They will be getting my business and rave reviews. Thank you to them, and thank you to this business for dropping the ball to help me find a wonderful Florist for the future. I very rarely write bad reviews. I believe in positive feedback and I would have loved to speak with a manager but I was hung up on.

I was put in charge of getting flowers for the viewing and the funeral, which was no easy task since my grandmother was a long-time member of various garden clubs and an avid gardener herself. I knew they had to be perfect, and I was skeptical about my chances for getting it right. Over the years, I had sent numerous bouquets and arrangements via internet order, only to show up myself a few days later and find that horrible flowers had been sent. This time, I decided to go, in person, to a local florist as soon as I got into town. My first stop was Hughes, a florist that has operated in the area for years and is about a 5 minute drive from where my grandmother lived. I was prepared to drive around town, though, if I had to. Anyway, I was there before they opened, and as soon I walked in, I was worried. It smelled a little smokey and some of the gifts sitting around the store looked like they had been sitting around for decades. But I pressed ahead, and I'm so glad I did. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I needed the flowers that afternoon, and they called their supplier to make sure everything I wanted - from a moss covered cross to bronzed calla lillies - was available. They promised to get all of the arrangements to the funeral home that afternoon in time for the viewing. I paid and left with my fingers crossed. When we arrived for the viewing, I am happy to say that the flowers were there and beyond beautiful. In fact, they were perfect. We received so many compliments, and I know my grandmother would have just loved them. So ... If you're about to place an internet order for flowers for any occasion, stop. Call a local florist if you can. And if the recipient is in Portsmouth or the Tidewater area of Virginia, call Hughes.

Obviously, I needed the flowers delivered to her hotel. Eclectic Design not only provided a beautiful arrangement (the flowers grabbed the attention of the other ladies at the meeting) at a wonderful price, they were more than happy to accommodate with a timely delivery. I even tried to provide a tip for the person delivering. They insisted that there was no need for that.
