Had a hankering for a fish fry on a recent Friday ~ decided to try Shorty's after reading favorable reviews. Ordered the breaded, deep fried fish sandwich with mac and cheese, along with a bowl of New England clam chowder. The fish was a large portion (although very thin), served on a standard hoagie roll with a small container of tarter sauce (which was flavorful), and a very small serving of mac and cheese (which was dry and room temperature at best). I was so looking forward to a nice, thick piece of fish and a decent portion of hot, cheesy mac and cheese ~ Shorty's didn't deliver. If I could give 0 stars I would. I have never been treated so badly simply because I have a 9 lb. emotional support dog, who is allowed to go wherever I go. One younger waitress was fine but the older waitress was a real piece of work. Finally I said if you would rather we go some place else say so and we'll be glad to leave. Well you dog has to be on the floor way in the back of the table where no one sees him/her. Well needless to say I left and will never go back there again. I stopped here with a couple coworkers on lunch break while we were coming back from a job site. It was nice that is located right off of I-81. There is plenty of parking around and it had a nice feel in the restaurant when you got in. Definitely family friendly area. Very clean and a friendly staff from my experience. Not too expensive. There was only one hostess and had to seat people and take the payment, which resulted in us waiting longer than we should have for a table because she was fiddling with getting peoples payments. Kind of frustrating honestly, especially since we are on a work break and do not have a lot of time to wait around to be seated, but based on the whole experience it was not a big deal. They have lots of options for food. They have some, I assume, home baked potato chips that they bring out. Which I found pretty tasty. I ended up ordering the eggplant parmesan sandwich which was really big! They put a lot of eggplant on the sandwich, very tasty. The fries were good too, I guess they know how to cook their potatoes! For a diner, this place gets 5 stars Right off of the highway, we found this gem about 5 hours into our 9 hour drive. Being the only people under 70 years old (besides the staff) put a huge smile on our faces- it was a real hometown place where everyone knows everyone. The staff was the friendliest I have ever come into contact with in a restaurant- this set the tone for the rest of the meal. Mom ordered the fried fish sandwich, and I the hamburger; two things this diner takes pride in. When lunch arrived, I could tell why; the fish sandwich was a monster- a perfectly fried (but not overly fried) piece of white fish which was moist and fresh under the light coating of batter. My hamburger was done to perfection at a medium rare and the French fries were to die for. Price points are low- the entire lunch was under $25 bucks with a tip. I will definitely stop back into Shorty's Place next road trip. It was the best hometown place to stop for a quick lunch. read more

Disgusting. Went here and learned a lesson today. "Stuffed French toast" is just a piece of bread cooked on an egg topped with a cheap strawberry syrup. Strawberry egg bread was not delicious. Took quite a while to get our food, i don't normally mind waiting but the food didn't make up for it. I like sweet tea, but they put way too much sugar per glass and it has a weird taste to it. Don't suggest this place at all, you'll save time and your taste buds if you go across the street to Cracker Barrel. Customer service was definitely good though. read more

However food was also from the 50's, being a basic burger/sandwich fare for the most part. (Lunchtime for us, so weren't interested in the breakfast or dinner options) OK in general, nothing special. Saw some reviews with great fish but my was sad and probably could have got better at long john slivers and that's not saying much!! I came in there to simply use their restroom because the gas station's bathroom was horrid. I walked in , and ALL the staff looked at me and didnt bother to greet me. So I shuffled passed them and went straight to the restroom. I felt really disrepected. The diner was not busy at all , they were all just standing around doing nothing , once I walked in they just looked at me? Like , HELLO , have you people ever heard of customer service. I tried Shorty's for the first time because one of my friends went and said that it was pretty good. When I arrived at 7AM, I walked right in and sat at the bar. The restaurant was old school diner themed with Coca-Cola brand throughout the place. I thought it was really cute and I liked the atmosphere. Joanne, my waitress greeted me instantly and took my order. I got the Big Breakfast Platter. It was delicious and the hot chocolate with whip cream topped it off. The decor in the diner is filled with classic coca-cola memorbilla, from the junk box to the glasses we were served our drinks in. My sister ordered a plate of wings as an appetizer. When the plate arrived we were shocked to see the amount of sauce and number of wings. We got 12 huge wings drenched in the delicious honey mustard sauce. I ordered the Hot Turkey sandwich plate with mashed potatoes. I was disappointed that used turkey deli meat as the turkey in my sandwich. The sad part to my meal was the veggies, they were canned green beans that were an army green (not fresh at all)! I deemed them unedible. The rest of my family was happy with their meals. Great diner food. This would be our second breakfast here on a weekend. Not crowded and fast service. Being right across the street from Cracker Barrel, I'm sure this spot gets passed on all day. I honestly would choose Shorty's 100x over their breakfast competitor. Prices are cheap, portions are huge! Plus breakfast is served all day. This time my husband and I both ordered the "Boots way Benny". Never had spinach and tomato on an eggs benidict and it was a nice fresh change. Our meal also came with a nice pile of "home fries" which was simply diced potatoes fried up, no doubt in a deep fryer. Would love to see hash browns on their menu as an alternative.
