A more authentic Taiwanese hot pot place in Irvine! Rating three stars because the food was painfully hot (it remained hot through the duration of my meal, which was about twenty+ minutes). It was hot to the point where I couldn't really taste much flavor of food since I was more concerned with washing it down with the drink. This place serves hotpot with more traditional Taiwanese ingredients (bean curd, gluten, Chinese hot dog). The ingredients are similar in a lot of their hot pot bowls , and they have a whole comprehensive list of what's in it. What's nice about this place is that they have build your own options if you want something specific. I was able to get my meal at a pretty good deal. This is the go-to place to get malatang in Irvine, and early pandemic it was honestly on the more expensive side. Now with everyone else increasing their prices and it's pretty much impossible to get any noodle bowl or soup type meals for under $20 anyway, all of a sudden Show Hotpot is price competitive. They have a great combo deal if you're not a picky eater but I'm an extremely picky eater so I'll always do the custom bowl which is measured by weight. For the custom bowl, they have a great variety of ingredients, from various types of meat and innards, great selection of vegetable, and random carb things to add to your soup, along with your standard noodle options. They put it all in the bowl, prepare you a hot piping soup, and it's sealed all ready for you to take home or enjoy on location. Admittedly it's no spice challenge, but I find the hottest option to be ample just for casual eating with zero regrets after. When it all comes down to it, it's not that much cheaper than your usual hot pot AYCE place but it has a flavor profile that hits just right if that's exactly what you're looking for. You'll definitely get full as well, although the mystery of the expanding stomach to handle that much meat consumption at AYCE always confounds me. Basically, you choose your soup and add on meats, veggies, tofus, and carbs one by one. It's nice that you can edit and customize your bowl exactly how you want it. For the hot pot bowls, you get to choose the toppings at the front in a personal plastic bowl, and then they add the soup in the back and seal it up. Choices of toppings is huge~ They have choices of seafood, meat, tofu, egg, veggies, and noodles. You can choose from non-spicy to very spicy for spiciness. I got the BYO bowl and my BF got the same thing with a bowl of rice and drink (medium spicy level). Order took around 10 minutes, they give you a plastic cutter to cut the seal. Soup was piping hot, a little spicy for medium, but hits the spot for a hot pot craving~ I especially loved the lobster balls, bean curd, and chinese donuts. It's in the same food court as Punjabi tandoor (awesome indian place) and is inside of the food court in the corner of the plaza I got a customizable hot pot and chicken rack Hotpot $12.99 or $13.99/lb The ingredients here are very vast. When you come in, they've got a wide array of vegetables and proteins so you choose how you die at your desk. Tofu, fish, morning glory, bok choy, - they've got your usual accoutrements, but more. I got a spicy original base, but found it to be lacking in flavor. After you open the lid, it's not topped with cilantro, onions, or anything - just whatever you chose to be in your bowl. I was kinda surprised, but it is what it is. I actually found the broth to be lacking in the flavor dept. Honestly, the day of I didn't like it that much, I def had to doctor it up with chili oil, garlic, and spices to make it more palatable. The next day was much better. Chicken rack $6.99? At first, I was like, "wtf is a chicken rack?" Why would people pay to eat the nonmeaty part of a chicken? It's essentially the chicken rib cage. There's no thigh/wing bone. You're paying for the rib cage and some miniscule, but highly flavored shreds of meat. I don't know what goes on in their crack seasoning, but it's definitely cumin, salt, sugar, .. and like 29 other spices. I had to Google this dish, and it said the rack is a popular dish in china where it's gone through an assortment of cooking methods to get to this condition. I'm not sure the order, but the ribcage was prolly fried, braised, and steamed in some order to get to the final destination. Whatever the method, this is probably one of the most flavorful snack foods I've ever eaten. If you eat it cold, it's kinda like jerky. Eat it hot and the dish is better presented. Super flavorful! Despite this dish being a lot of bone, it's kind of fun to find the meatier pieces and carefully bite around the small bones, making sure to not choke on tiny fragments. Because the hotpot didn't wow me much the first day, found it acceptable but not amazing - that's where they lose a point. That chicken rack really made up for it though. I was able to order online with a promotion they had, came really late to pickup my order, but the noodles didn't soak up the broth so that's cool. Service was friendly and clean. Yummy! I love the beef soup base. You can build your own bowl and they will charge by weight. You can tell them exactly how much of each "topping" you want. Veggies are fresh and clean. A wide variety of toppings to choose from. I definitely recommend if you like flavors like Boiling Point, but I you can get more of a variety of toppings here. I am excited to come back on cold and rainy days. They cook the ingredients for you and seal it up like a boba cup and include a sharp object to open the bowl with. I would have liked if they filled the bowl with more broth but it was still plenty of food and I had leftovers once I was stuffed. 1 Star reviews are always hard to write, but I think as a customer, it should deserves attention for future customers. Long story short, we ordered a customized bowl yesterday for to go, meat and vegetables etc. once we got home, there was no meat. No proteins... so we called the restaurant to see what happens. The nice gentleman said no problem, we will either refund you the card or the next one on them. Great so far right? So we came over the next day and a new person working at the counter said they only can add more meat??? What about the incomplete meal from yesterday?? This person tried to trick us said the new entree can be subtracted by the amount we paid yesterday $16ish. But guess what, the new bowl came out to be $17$ and he said he can only take out whole amount such as $10.... I mean i am not that bad at math here but I am suppose to get a refund of $16, but instead, asked to buy another bowl of $17 and only getting $10 refund???? I mean come on, this kind of gimick really disgusts us. Obsessed with this place. The seasoning and spice level for medium spicy is just right. The vegetable selection is awesome. They have all my favs (tong ho, konjac knots, bean curd sheets, tripe, etc.). Their milk tea is a like sweet for me but it helps when your mouth is burning The gristles (cartilage) are good too! The only reason why they don't get the final star is that on some of my orders, I feel like my items went missing for were combined with my partner's bowl, which is weird because when I order two and they have different ingredients, they mark it so I know which is which. We ordered 3 dry pots, 1 hot pot (all extra mild) and sesame balls through DoorDash. The hot pot and sesame balls were great, but the 3 dry pots were SO extremely spicy that it was inedible. I'm convinced that they messed up our order and made it extra spicy instead of extra mild. When I called to complain, the young woman (who was not the manager) told me that it wasn't their fault that I can't handle spice and that their customers who are sensitive to spice ask for no spice or spice on the side. Excuse me? First of all, I'm Korean and I can handle spice just fine. Second of all, when I ordered the food, there was no option to ask for no spice or spice on the side. I ordered from Uber eats and was very intrigued with the build your own option. I ended up getting a dry pot combo and a build your own beef soup base. I liked how you could add the toppings you like and adjust the spice level. I got the very spicy for the dry pot with the wide glass noodles, the taste and flavor was good but the portion size was very underwhelming. Lots of potato and lotus, very little meat. I really liked the flavor of the beef soup, it was flavorful and creamy and the medium spice level is perfect. Not too spicy but still has a kick. Again, I wish the portions were bigger, maybe if I ordered in person I could double up on certain items without worrying about the bowl coming out to be $30 after Postmates surcharge. For example, one order of fish tofu was 2 pieces, there were like 5 thin slices of beef, and a couple pieces of bokchoy. All in all, I really appreciate the convenience of this place. You can get Chinese hot pot without having to smell like hot pot! Also the ingredients and flavor are more on the authentic side. Set in a food court type of situation in the corner of a strip mall with good seating. I always get the dry pot (mala xiang guo). Super quick and convenient -- pick out your proteins, veggies, and they fry it for you in usually about 5-10 min. The House Spicy version is bomb. Recently tried the Sweet & Sour for the first time but wasn't as impressed. Spice level is consistent for both flavors, Medium is perfect if you like heat that builds. read more
