I really wanted to like this place because we hadn't had malatang before but there were so many issues. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The taste wasn't bad, but there were quite a few flies in the restaurant.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The products didn't seem to be that fresh and the restaurant just didn't seem super clean.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It took a really long time to get the food and again, it just didn't feel really clean.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

My son suggested this restaurant, having previously visited with some of his Taiwanese friends. I found the concept quite appealing and thoroughly enjoyed my experience. It offers a wonderful system where you can personally select your preferred vegetables, meats, proteins, and noodles, as well as your choice of broth. The service was delightful and accommodating. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The establishment itself is compact and well-maintained, making it an excellent option for students due to its affordability.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The portion sizes are entirely customizable; your selections determine the final cost. Thus, you have the flexibility to create a small or large bowl to your liking. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Zhangliang Malatang is a nice place to go to if you're feeling down for some hot, spicy soup. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's very much a casual type of restaurant.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Upon entering, you may be confused if you have never been to a malatang place. There is a cabinet with sanitized bowls and tongs in the front next to the door.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Then, you get to select which ingredients you want to add. When I went, the labels for the items were either missing or incorrectly mislabeled. They do have a wide selection of veggies, meats, noodles, and more to choose from. They price per pound, and there is a 0.8 lb minimum. You may want to choose to be selective of which ingredients to add, as some ingredients are more dense and heavier (such as napa cabbage vs spinach). When getting the broth, you can select which spicy level you want. When I went, I got the spiciest level because I love spicy food, but definitely beware that they do not mess around with the spice level! They will cook your food in the broth and bring it out to you when it is ready. There is also a sauce bar with a variety of dipping sauces. They even have fortune cookies and melon candy available there.

Decent malatang spot in Irvine! I enjoyed their flavored classic bone broth and the variety of meats and vegetables available. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Compared to YinTang, though, it falls a bit short in terms of service and overall cleanliness.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] One nice touch is that they offer free fortune cookies at the sauce bar. Overall, it's a solid option but not my top choice in the area.

Warning: Health Hazard - Flies, Mold, and Abusive Service at Irvine Zhang Liang Malatang Hidden Fees & Deceptive Pricing: They charge extra for spice level but do not list it on the menu, unlike the Rowland location, which clearly posts all upcharges. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Moldy fans, flies in every ingredient, screaming staff, zero accountability, and hidden fees.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Go elsewhere. The final straw for my sister and I was when we went around 9pm today. I began selecting our ingredients, we noticed flies in the water of the potato bin. We started looking in every dish, we found flies in every single bowl of liquid food--tomatoes, fish balls, beef, and more. When I politely informed a server and asked to put back the potatoes, she sneered at me, dismissed it as "normal for summer," and walked away. When I tried to tell her the issue was everywhere, she ignored me completely. I told the cashier and walked out. This is not just unappetizing, it is a health violation. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I've also seen mold on the fan before, and these are the types of flies that comes from maggots, it's very concerning where the flies comes from.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Previous Incidents that I didn't bother to leave a bad review Hair in my food: I found a long hair tangled in my meat--impossible to be mine, as I was eating from a small bowl with my food to my right and phone in front. When I told the server, he offered a new bowl or a refund, but as I went to get one, an older Asian woman staff rushed out and screamed at me in the middle of the restaurant, claiming their chefs are bald and that I dropped the hair and that the hair is blue but you can clearly see the hair is black in the picture. She held my bowl, refused a refund, and yelled that I had to take a new one. The entire store stared. I had already paid and tipped 15% upfront, so I took the new bowl to-go just to escape the humiliation. And another incident I just learned today. My 12year-old sister went with friends anwaited an hour for her order, only to be told they gave it to someone else--and received nothing but a replacement bowl as "compensation."

A build your own hot pot spot that's great to satisfy your warm and soupy cravings. It's fully customizable so grab a bowl, toss whatever you want in it, and they'll weigh and cook it for you There's a few different broths to choose from and the two that i tried were both great. im sure you can't go wrong with any of them. The inside vibes were really casual and like diner vibes so nothing fancy at all. It was pretty empty so that's good if you don't wanna wait but could feel a little off if you're like the only people there lol. I'd come back again if im just feeling like a more casual experience. Just make sure your eyes aren't more hungry than your stomach otherwise you'll end up putting like 3 pounds of meat in your bowl on accident LOL Food: 8/10 Service: 5/10 Atmosphere: 5/10 Value: 6/10

[[HIGHLIGHT]]This spot is full of young college kids, most with no manners.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] So, expect this type of environment when you come. The food is good and there are many options. They will seat you so please do not make yourself look stupid by thinking you can reserve a seat while your friend go get the food.

    Laura J.

It sucks that some soup were extra but there is still a good variety that doesn't require the extra pay. I believe you need to get a minimum of one pound. But overall very nice, lots of options to choose from from fishballs to meats to veggies, you go up and grab what'd you like and then weigh it and choose your soup up front. I think depending on what you get you get quite a bit of food for one pound.

We were looking for something new to try and we walked by this place. I love that this is a self serve chinese fast hotpot place with chinese spices and flavors. The broth was very tasty and I would definitely get the classic flavor again. The chili oil had that classic numbing flavor to it which I enjoy in small doses. The server was polite, fast, and she gave us water before we even sat at our tables. The food was prepared within minutes of us getting seated. They have an excellent selection of seafood and vegetables. They even have various seafood meatballs. However they do not have a large number of meat options. They have one thinly sliced beef and lamb options but they did not have any other cuts or meats available. Overall, a good place but I would like to see more types of beef cuts.

I love this place!! such a good late night spot!! I once came here at 11pm and the line was out the door LOL. I love malatang! The convenience of having any ingredient u want is amazing and they're pretty much always well stocked. I usually go with the classic beef broth but I tried the dry pot for the first time this time and it was soo good! The workers here were so nice. They saw that me and my bf were sharing a bowl so they grabbed small bowls for us to eat out of. So considerate for a self serve spot! Don't forget to make a dipping sauce at the sauce bar. My fave combo is sesame, soy sauce, vinegar, cilantro, green onions, and a little bit of minced garlic

It was a little difficult to figure out how to get our food since there was no sign for instructions. But it is all self service, you need to get a bowl and grab the food you want in your malatang. There is a decent variety to choose from. Once you get the bowl you go up to the front and they will weigh the bowl then you can pick a soup base and how spicy you want it to be. Once you have that you can sit and they will bring the food out to you. The actual food was fine. It wasn't the best malatang I have had but it wasn't the worst. The parking is easy and there is a big lot. There is also a sunright by it so easy desert access as well.

There's a lot of places for good malatang in Irvine, but I'd actually never tried Zhangliang before and now would definitely say it's at the top of my go-to malatang spots! Compared to most places, I think Zhangliang absolutely delivers on the spice and numbing sensation, the latter being a very important factor for my malatangs so I would highly recommend if you like the tingly feeling as well! I'd say their ingredients are decent in terms of quality and diversity, pricing is alright, and service is nice - overall a solid spot for mala and will have to come back again!

I think I've been to this restaurant but in the SGV area before but I don't remember... To start.. I like their little condiment/self serve layout. You can really fit a lot of food in that little fridge/display thing. The variety here is crazy! It's probably the most choices I've seen for malatang so far. I tried not to go overboard so I only got like 1.3lbs of food. They have good broth choices and a LOTTTT of condiments at the sauce bar as well! A++ for me Service was ok since it's mostly self serve. It's definitely a place I would come back to or go to all the locations LOL

I'm Asian so I know how to handle spice, but even a level 2 on their spice level will be a bit painful. The interior looks newly designed, and the inside is very clean. The standout dish for me was the fried rice. For a hot pot place, they really know how to cook up a delicious fried rice. The meat was unremarkable, but with how thin they slice the meat at hot pot/shabu places, I've never been too impressed with any meats a hot pot place. The service is okay - you'll probably have an easier time communicating with the staff here if you speak Chinese, but even with limited English, there's not much to convey; and to be frank, with how spicy the food is, your typical Westerner might suffer here as I did (but in a good way).
