The low down: There are two parts to this place, the cafe and then attached to the back of the cafe is a door that takes you through another door to the bar. The food was terrific and the service was a little slow but it was the guys first night so we cut him some slack. Clean and some interesting decorating in the bar area (see photos). Also, states online that there is a cover charge of $5 when a live band is there. we weren't charged one, but we're prepared to pay if needed. Fun fact: For a small price you can take a ceiling tile, paint it and bring it back. When you bring it back they will refund your money (they take the money incase you never bring the tile back) I'm so excited to write this review because what seemed like it would be horrible ended up being so much fun! Looking for a new place to hear live music that's off the beaten path I turned to my YELP community and found this place. I wasn't really sure they were still open because when you call the number it rings and rings and then there is a recording that says "voicemail isnt set up". Decided to drive out there to Spring Hope anyway (about 20 min away from where I live in Rolesville). We sa We pulled up around 7:30pm and the place looked closed. Virtually no cars, lights dim but there was a blinking sign that said OPEN. We walk in and NOTHING, no live music, no bar, just a few tables and only about 3 of the tables even had people seated. We stood there for about 2 minutes waiting for someone to address us(there was no one to be found). Finally a nice lady came out from the back. We asked her about the bar and live music that was advertised and she pointed to a door at the back of the restaurant and said...it's through there, you'll hear the music after you open the door. So excited that there was, in fact, live music we eagerly head to the door and open it. We hear nothing! We walk through the hallway and see a bar. There was one lady sitting at the bar. The rest of the bar was empty. We said to her.. we heard there was live music here and she said .. oh there is, they are taking a break. So we sat at the bar, Looking around we noticed some unique decorating. There were Barbie dolls hanging from the ceiling and supposedly each one represents a person. A bartender asked us if we wanted a food menu. I read from YELP that their food was great so we decided to place an order. We ordered a tuna sandwich w rosemary fries. YELP community is right, the food was delicious. My picture doesn't do it justice. The band came in from their intermission along w about 4 other patrons. The band was really good, playing country cover songs. We left early (about 9:30pm) and at that time there were only about 12 people there. The place really was awesome and more people should check it out. The band was great, the service was good(it was the bartenders first night) and the people that were there were super friendly. It's a much different vibe than what you get when you go out in Raleigh.

Great food! We're looking forward to returning and trying more items on the menu. Make sure you grab one of those tasty cookies too!

It was Friday so fried fish was on the menu. The fried whiting was delicious with sides of mac n cheese, cabbage and green beans. All perfectly seasoned. My friend loved her meal as well. She even got a to go plate for later, w/ fried catfish and sides. Service was friendly and courteous. The wait staff checked on us frequently to see if we needed anything. We'll definitely be back the next time we travel to Oxford!

The street situation precluded a few spots downtown, and since we weren't in the mood for our go-to taco place, we decided to head out to the Family Diner. The walk-in was awkward on our part- cash register or hot bar line first? A sweet call from the kitchen of "Y'all's first time?" got us headed in the right direction. Full disclaimer: I've been nostalgic for the southern cafeteria lately. While talking to some food industry friends last week, we realized there is something powerful about the food we all remember from K and W. And while Family Diner doesn't have a giant dining room or a 5-snake velvet rope line to get to the counter, it does take me back. Here's how we made our choices: the hot bar was a choice of three types of chicken- the baked and fried were tempting until the gentleman serving us says: "We can fry you fish to order. Flounder, trout, and catfish." The chicken got skipped for a plate of flounder (plentiful plate, btw), and a side of the Mac and cheese and cooked cabbage. The kid sampled the catfish plate, same sides. Sweet tea. And yes ma'am, I'd like the cornbread. Done. We sat down at a table in the main, cozy dining room. The first thing that I noticed: this place is clean- tidy, even. There was a super polite young man moving around and busing tables, tidying up unassumingly and doing it in a way that is lacking in some finer dining places I've been in recently. The food came out, piping hot. I used one of the malt vinegar packets to douse my flounder (a cafeteria habit) and dug in. The first bite was light and flaky, cooked perfectly. Nothing greasy-tasting, at all, just clean. The sides were great- nothing over seasoned, and like cooking at home, there was room for you to season things to your taste. Well played, Family Diner. The owner (I think? She was the one who guided us down the right path when we walked in) came out to make sure that we were happy, and yes ma'am, it's great, and holy cow, you just dropped this cornbread into the skillet and fried it? Yes, we will be back. It's unassuming, and it's just what the doctor ordered. It's a cafeteria, but it's clean and polite and makes you feel good that you ate there. It's soul food, but not just from an ethnic standpoint- it makes me happy and full and feel welcome and I'll be back.

Every time we visit our family in North Carolina, we have to stop here to have breakfast. I always get a bacon egg and cheese. That's on our list next time. This place is so awesome. It's only a drive-through and the service is so quick. It's a small little Mom pop shop that you could get quality biscuits.

It is not fancy, but once you try something it is different. This is American Cooking but with a style that is special. See what awaits. When we went in I had worked up at the Rocky Point Markets for furniture both in the spring and the fall of each year. It was always filled with folks from everywhere to shop, and see and buy for the next season. There were plenty of places to have lunch. But when dinner came it was special. The local style of cooking was different. It might have the same meal as you would find in another region, but here it was different as it is based on the cook / chef. Tonight we stopped in and the person helping us was very special. She told us of what was available and what was not. She gave the details and let us order. First we had to have an Arnold Palmer. Naturally, it was different than the person down the block. This was not sweet as usually. It was an equal mike and perfect to have. It gave us something to think about. First up was the Mac & Cheese. But unlike normal Mac & Cheese, with this we ordered shrimp. Not what you expect, this was unique. The Mac & Cheese was a combination of fresh pasta and mixed with four different types of cheese. It was mixed together with a cream and butter. It was not a firm mix but a mix that was moist and tasty with each bit you took. That alone was a meal unto itself. Being mixed with shrimp was different. The shrimp where not small. They were a good size. And there was almost a dozen mixed in. They were not placed onto. Being mixed in they aded to the flavor and taste. There was no spices. Just fresh shrimp with pasta and a cheese mix. A dip of bread helped to take it all in. Next we did have Baby Back Ribs. These were very fresh and tasty. Cooked to the right point hthey literally fell off the bone itself with the touch of a fork. The taste was slightly mixed with honey. Sweet but spicy. Naturally had to have some home made coleslaw with this. Plus an order of sweet potato fries. And these were fresh. Alone with a drink these would have been a good snack to have together. I could have had another plate of these alone. The two dishes were perfect. Yet, we did need to have dessert when the couple at the next table ordered it and shared it. This was Bread Pudding, topped with vanilla ice cream and served with Bourbon sauce. This was heaven itself. You did not need more. There people could have shared this one item. Again, it was freshly made and warm. Ideal. The ice cream was made that morning. And, as for the bourbon, you could have had a glass of this. Spread over the bread pudding it was how we sometime drink an Irish Coffee. Had to have that taste with each bite. Overall, this was a special place to for a meal. It was truly unique for the region and for the chef. The team was a great help. The price was great. As for the people who were there, it was packed. Many came from the places where they are creating the new furniture and items that will be on display for the next market in Rocky Point for next spring. They knew where the place is and what to order. It is truly the right spot for a good meal. It is worth the visit next time I am in town.
