Great lunch spot with a terrific menu. Came here for a work lunch and enjoyed a seasonal salad with blackened salmon and it hit the spot! We went to Northside Bistro and Cocktails to celebrate a birthday and had a wonderful experience from start to finish. I was able to park right in front of the restaurant, which was a great bonus. The hostess seated us immediately, and our server was absolutely wonderful--so friendly and especially sweet to our birthday girl. All of the food was delicious! I ordered the tuna tartare and enjoyed it as my entrée--it was perfectly fresh and packed with amazing flavor. The décor had a great evening vibe, and I loved the variety of seating options, from tables and booths to bar seating. They even had cozy tables that were perfect for intimate date nights. My daughter and I decided to dine at Northside at the last minute on a beautiful Saturday evening. I was able to make a reservation via Open Table for 8pm. We arrived about 10 minutes before our reservation and were seated right away. Morgan was our amazing server. I was really glad I made a reservation as there was limited seating. Northside is a nice sized restaurant with a decent amount of seating. Booths, high top tables & bar seating. There's a good vibe inside. We started with cocktails and the soft warm rolls w/ whipped butter that's brought out to each table. For our starter we had the Octopus Bravas. The potatoes were rather seasoned & spicy, and the Octopus could have had a little more flavor. I ordered the Seared Scallops, it's listed differently online where it comes with pasta. On their dining menu, the scallops are baked in a puff pastry in a mushroom sauce with breadcrumbs, served with yellow rice and garlicky spinach. My daughter ordered the Duck Confit with fingerling potatoes, not mashed. We gave our entrees 10/10 for presentation and 7/10 for taste. My daughter added garlic salt to her dish to bring out the taste. I didn't need to add anything to my dish as it was already pretty salty. The scallops were perfect. The dessert menu looks amazing, but we didn't have enough room to even try it this time. I'd definitely go back again and try other menu items. read more

I have been to Northside Bistro a few times, with girlfriends, family etc. Last night was date night and we just wanted something a little more top tier from the kitchen. I say this because Northside Bistro never disappoints on service and also with food. Thank you Chef John Scarangella! I will say, every single time I go, they seat us in that enclosed porch area at the exact same table. it a little funny. I even went with 7 ladies last year and we were in the same area, bigger table. It would be nice to sit inside of the main dining room one of these days. last night we had great service as usual and the food was amazing. We had the fried artichokes and the Octopus Bravas which we did not take pictures of because we gobbled that down it was so good. My husband had short ribs and grits, we shared a salad which was the Warm Goat Cheese Salad, and I had a special which I think was called Flounder Ettoufee. I had been hearing good things about this place so we decided to go for Valentine's Day. I went to make reservations the first of January and all they had was a 9:00 available, and we took it. We arrived at 8:50 and we were seated right away, and it was packed. Since I'm a little undecided I always look at the menu before I go to a restaurant. It didn't dawn on me that they would have a special menu for Valentine's Day. I wanted to try the octopus and pan seared scallops; neither was available for the new menu. I pivoted and we tried the Caesar salad and duck wings, the salad may be the best Caesar salad I have ever had, and you can add the anchovies which I did. The waitress forgot to add them so she brought us some, a lot which I wasn't mad at. Since it was so late and we had a late lunch we decided to split an entree and we opted for the potato gnocchi and beef and it was delicious. I definitely want to go back and try the octopus and the drinks were also great. Came here for my birthday lunch online allowed me to make 215 lunch reservations had no idea the kitchen closed by 2:30 that is not on their website. When we arrived, the girl told us instantly. Hey you better hurry up and order because the kitchen is closing. Well, I wanted beef Wellington, and obviously that was not gonna be fast. We felt rushed and uncomfortable. She came by more than once annoyed, wanting us to order very quickly. We gave up and we left. It's a shame because they lost like $200 in sales because they don't have it listed anywhere that if you make 215 reservations, the kitchen will close in 15 minutes. Very disappointed. read more

We called and were told that the bar was empty and we would have no problem eating there. Maybe it's the WAY TOO loud, WAY TOO chatty manager constantly cornering and engaging the staff in insipid conversation whilst food sits in the window. That was just weird! My first 5-star worthy review!! Let's get into the food, ambiance, & service. Food: so many options and an extensive cocktail menu! We got the bowl of chili- it has steak, beans, more beef and served with tortillas chips! The duck confit with broccoli and potatoes, CHEFS KISS. My date cleaned his chili bowl and plate of duck. The table bread was also really good, we had 3 pieces to share. We also had a Ceaser salad with grilled shrimp. Everything was amazing. Ambiance: perfect dim lighting- not too dark, just right with cute lamps on the table. Super clean restrooms. And the dining tables had a good amount of space in between so I didn't hear other guests conversations. Service- absolutely wonderful, 10/10. I was a waitress for years and I thought I was the best but my server here was the best! Attentive, friendly, funny and knowledgeable about the menu. I had lunch at Northside Bistro and was looking forward to it as friends had been raving about it. I just wasn't impressed by it. They do take reservations but we were the only group there for the longest time so I'd say you probably don't need them at lunch time. I ordered the steak frites. It was good but not great or memorable. The price was high for what you get as well. Maybe this restaurant is better for dinner. If it is still open next year, I will give it a second try. read more

While in town for work, our team met here for dinner and the food was decent. Decent isn't a bad thing, I just was underwhelmed. As a starter our table order the duck wings, tuna tacos, and Italian cheese dip. I enjoyed the dip which came with bread and my colleagues seemed to really enjoy the duck wings and tuna tacos. For my entree, I ordered the Beef and Potatoes Gnocchi for me it lacked flavor but the presentation was nice. The environment was cool and this restaurant provides a nice intimate atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating. I personally wouldn't go back but my colleagues seemed to really enjoy their food. Just because I didn't enjoy it doesn't mean you wouldn't so I think you should give this place a try if you're in the area. read more

I had never heard of this restaurant before, but it popped up when I searched up "places with french onion soup." I picked here because I saw they had beef wellington on the menu. I was sold. Once we got there, I noticed all the tables were very small and close together. Besides that, it was cute and had a modern vibe. My partner started with a seasonal salad that was tossed in a warm apple cider vinaigrette. We both thought it was quite nice! I, of course, got the french onion soup. It was very good. There was a decent amount of cheese and the flavors were deep, but there was a little too much of an herby taste that overpowered the onion at times. Overall though, I would give it an 8/10. For our entree, we shared the beef wellington. I thought the spinach and mashed potatoes were good and flavorful, but I was pretty disappointed in the meat. It was definitely a tad too rare, but thats not a huge issue for me. I could tell it needed to be in longer though, for the puff pastry was raw in one or two spots. I thought the mushroom pate wasn't minced fine enough, which caused the dish to have a strong mushroom forward taste instead of melding together with the other flavors. I also don't think the steak itself was seasoned. I wish this was a better experience, but I can see myself coming back for the soup and trying another entree. read more

If you are asking yourself right now do I want a nice night out with friends or the significant other without damaging my wallet this is a place to go. Reasonable priced and honestly you could split some apps and the entree to real split that bill up. The atmosphere is cozy with an odd hint of rustic not too loud not too quite. Candles on the tables add to the effect. The appetizers are well priced and taste delicious. The octopus cooked and seasoned perfectly. The setup for eating it however is a little messy and octopus will fall off don't be afraid to eat it alone. The Summer Tuna Stack lives up to its name and taste like straight up summer (hoping for a nice seasonal menu changes). The entree were bursting with flavor. The chicken mole was a massive chicken breast that honestly could have fed a couple and each slice had layers of flavor. Don't be hasty to eat fast let those flavors evolve on those taste buds. The potato gnocchi and beef tenderloin was a great entree as well with the main taste element being the truffle. The one downside is that the truffle is such a strong flavor it could get overwhelming after a while which is another great reason to share these great dishes. It was good but I wouldn't order alcohol here again when my meal was mediocre and tasteless. We had an appetizer of Brussels which were fine, My salad with grilled chicken had no flavor and I was still hungry afterwards. Northside Bistro brings a trendy downtown atmosphere to uptown Raleigh! It's a great place to get high-end and high quality food without driving so far away. I come here frequently and I'm always greeted with friendly staff. Chef John himself usually comes by my table to chat and to see how everything is going, which is super cool! From the decor to the service and to the food, this spot is absolutely perfect. Italian Cheese Dip: Toasted garlic bread/baguette slices and a fontina cheese fondue to dip in. The bread slices were crispy and the cheese fondue was smooth. Super tasty and served warm. This is a great appetizer to start off your meal at Northside! Stuffed Mushroom Caps: Another great appetizer to start with! Served in a pan, these mushroom caps are stuffed with sausage, spinach, and red peppers and are covered with fontina cheese sauce! The cheese is stretchy and the mushroom is cooked perfectly; it's a super satisfying bite. Tuna Tartar Tacos: A fresh fish appetizer without the typical fishy taste. This appetizer has diced tuna tossed in a teriyaki and ginger glaze with wonton taco shells, as well as a cabbage slaw and a wasabi peanut dressing. The teriyaki and ginger bring out the fresh flavors of the fish and pair so nicely with the crispy bite of the wonton shell. Charred Octopus Tostada: A great appetizer that features a tostada that's stacked with octopus, avocado, and arugula. The octopus was soft and a little chewy, but the crunch from the tostada and arugula was a nice pairing. Sy's Steak Tartar: Freshly chopped beef loin seasoned with a mild steak sauce, herbs, and capers. The sauce was a little overpowering on the beef, but the arugula, garlic bread, and chips toned it down when eaten together. Great variety of textures in this appetizer! Hashtag Tuna: A mellow main dish that has slices of seared tuna served with rice cakes and teriyaki broccoli. This felt like more of an appetizer, but the Asian flavors are prevalent and the tuna was fresh. Cedar Plank Salmon: A stunning seafood main dish served on a wooden plate. The salmon was cooked perfectly and was seasoned well. There were also a side potatoes that were soft and warm, but the arugula on top of the salmon hid the potatoes and most of the fish. Beef Wellington: A filet mignon surrounded in mushrooms and a puff pastry that's been roasted in the oven to perfection. The filet is soft and is complimented well with buttery and creamy mushrooms, and on top of that, a crispy bite from the puff pastry ties it in altogether. I order this whenever I come here and it's executed perfectly every time. Creme Brulee: A superb dessert with rich, light cream with a layer of caramelized sugar and fruits! The vanilla flavor in the cream is really prevalent and tastes great with the sugar and fruits. A great way to end a meal without feeling so heavy afterwards! Overall, Northside Bistro features refined American food with elevated flavors in a modern, yet comforting restaurant. What really won our hearts was when we asked if we could order from the dinner menu even though it was at lunch. We started off with a few selections of appetizers: *The Tuna Tartar Taco -The tuna was fresh and was tossed in a light teriyaki glaze that makes the tuna shine. The cabbage slaw is as a great pairing, as the it cleansed your palette. The crispy wontons are crunchy and pair well with the tuna. *The Italian Cheese Dip - The bread chips are crunchy and buttery, and the cheese dip is to die for. *The Charred Octopus Tostada is a very filling appetizer. The tostada is crunchy while the octopus is soft and very seasoned well. It's garnished with fresh vegetables such as tomatoes and avocado. *The Sausage Mushroom Caps is by far the best appetizer on the menu. The sausage meatballs that is seasoned to perfection is stuffed in a mushroom cap with a rich fulfilling fontina cheese sauce. The mushrooms are juicy and soft, and the sausage filling is seasoned well and has spinach and roasted bell peppers in the cheese sauce. *Sy's Steak Tartar - Chopped beef tenderloin seasoned with bistro steak sauce with homemade salt and vinegar potato chips, toasted garlic toast and baby arugula. Dinner selections include the following recommendations: The Scallop and Shrimp Etouffe - The scallops and shrimp are cooked in a gravy, Louisiana Cajun style tomato sauce that's over mashed polenta (a mashed potato flavor). The Cajun sauce had a nice kick with the bell peppers and sausages. The Cedar Plank Salmon -The salmon is cooked to perfection. It was soft and flaky, and melts in your mouth as you took a bite. The potatoes were perfectly seasoned as it were charred on the outside and soft on the inside. Overall, it was an outstanding dish that had many different flavors. Northside Bistro's savory, puff pastry and service elements come together in one superb speciality, and that's the Beef Wellington. Tender hand cut Filet Mignon cooked to order all encased in a magnificent, golden pastry shell. This specialty is served with truffled duchesse potatoes and roasted rainbow carrots topped with a truffle cream sauce. I've never had a better version of this dish, as my Beef Wellington temperature was roasted just right. Hashtag Tuna - seared Sashimi grade yellow fin Tuna with a teriyaki and ginger glaze served with a crispy seasoned rice cake that's garnished with crispy broccoli. Homemade Fresh Pappardelle Bolognese is made with fresh tomato sauce. The pasta noodles was cooked just right. Potato Gnocchi and Beef Tenderloin was my 2nd favorite dish that Northside Bistro. Wagyu Beef is available, sourced from Japan with authentication. Thank you Chef John for this special treat. The wagyu beef is a must try that's available in 2 ounces, 4, 6, or 8. oz. Desserts: *Chocolate Chess Pie - This decadent dessert is perfect for chocolate lovers. *The Creme Brûlée is a good dessert to end off your meal. It's not overpowering or overly sweet. The creme has a nice sweet vanilla taste that has charred sugar on top. The cream is creamy and light. The tangy and sweet strawberries and blackberries cuts the creaminess from the creme. It's hard to find quality dining in north Raleigh, and was refreshing to see a place open up that can deliver quality/unique food, good service, and a pleasant ambiance. We did share plates, but you could easily do drinks and apps or individual entrees if that's more to your liking. Came on a Saturday night, no complaints at all about the service, very attentive. I would say food is good not great. Tartare is cut with a BBQ tang that isn't my preference, but it was fairly mild and others might like it. Caesar was massive and well executed and should be shared by two or three. I got the prime rib, and it's not really available any less than medium. I found it a little dry and would have preferred horseradish to the sauce that comes with it. Sides were very good, and the whole thing is generally a good value. We liked our drinks a lot, and would return to try something different. 8/10 read more

I love their motto of brining downtown, uptown! I like having local chef driven options like this in North Raleigh. Sometimes you just don't feel like going downtown! I made a reservation online for Friday night and headed in for an early dinner. The dining room was empty when we walked in and they seated us right by the crowded bar. We noticed they had a sun room of sorts that had a wall of open windows. Since dining inside isn't our choice with this darn variant, we asked if we could be moved and to their patio. They moved us without a problem. It's actually the perfect option since we felt safe dining there, but it was pouring rain so we couldn't have sat at one of their fully outdoor tables. The room had fans and heaters! It felt very COVID safe. Our waitress was super friendly and very attentive even though we were the only ones out there for most of dinner. I wanted an aperol spritz, but their bar doesn't stock aperol. Instead I went with their prosecco drink with scoops of sorbet. Super tasty and refreshing during the Summer heat. My husband ordered the whiskey sour and thoroughly enjoyed it. We decided to go with a bunch of appetizers for our meal. We went with the onion dip, five onion soup, duck wings, and tuna. The onion dip was super tasty, the menu said they were salt and vinegar chips, but I didn't taste the vinegar. The chips were delicious. The soup was good, but not our favorite of the bunch. The tuna with watermelon and wontons was a great Summer app. The star of the show and the clear deserving item of five stars is their duck wings. Those things are delicious. They slow roast them for a ridiculous amount of time then flash fry them. They are a perfect mix of crispy and melt in your mouth goodness. Highly recommend getting this appetizer!
