I've been working with Shubha for over a year now on a house renovation project. As part of the permitting process, we needed to submit a landscape plan so Shubha has been working with our Architect and Engineering team on those drawing sets. We're really excited to see the final project when it is done. When we had our first consult with Shubha, I really appreciated that she was aligned with our vision for focusing on native plants and low-maintenance landscaping. It's really important to us that our yard contributes to the local ecosystem and Shubha understands this. At one point during our initial meeting, a spider landed on her and I pointed it out to her. She calmly used her sunglasses to scoop it up and help the spider land on a nearby plant, then apologized to the spider for coming into its home and disrupting it. This really showed me how much she believes in supporting our local ecosystem -- every living thing has its part to play. In the meantime, I recently asked Shubha to help us with some yard maintenance. This year, I got pregnant and with the heavy rains we had in the winter, our yard maintenance became unmanageable. We had a party planned and I was hoping to have someone come out quickly to help get the yard into a safe state. With fire season coming up this was something we needed to do soon anyway. She came over to do an assessment and provided us with an estimate the next evening. We approved and she and her crew of two were here and got the job done in 6 hours. Very frustrating to work with her. We hired her for our landscaping design. She insisted on working via zoom, we could not understand her, she didn't share any clear ideas or plant names, everything was low resolution, ineligible. We ended up sticking with her despite all the difficulties since we had already signed a contract. I basically did the design myself, she only contributed by recommending drought-tolerant plants. We paid her in full. Once we notified her that we will hire someone else to do the actual landscaping job, she tried to get an additional $200 from us on top of the $1490 we already paid her per contract. She took us to small claims court and we won our case. We do not recommend her! read more

While Shubha is knowledgeable about plants and has a good eye for design, she will rip you off. Do not hire her for implementing her design unless you have a desire to lose money and your peace of mind. I have a LONG list of issues with this contractor including the fact that she completely botched the implementation of her own design, left out large chunks of work from the estimate, caused us SO much angst. She is very experienced and knowledgeable. She has an eye for garden aesthetics and which plants would be best for the project. Her business model is based on design and build; not time and materials as many other landscape businesses are based. You can tell the difference between her work and other landscapers, who are just interested in charging you as much as possible and rushing through the job without much concern for quality. We had an exceptional experience with Shubha Landscape Design. We found Shubha to be extremely knowledgeable in her field, very informed about all aspects of the job and so very organized. She communicated with us via phone and email and was always quick to respond to questions and concerns. One thing I especially liked was her attention to detail and her commitment to check everything with us to make sure it was what we wanted. Another thing I appreciated about Shubha was her VAST Knowledge. We don't actually know that much and she not only provided multiple options for paver design, look and patterns, but talked to us about other options for every aspect of our job with photo examples and a list of pros and cons for each choice. We had to make adjustments over the course of the project because of how our yard is shaped and Shubha was very flexible in adjusting to our new requests. I have been very pleased with her knowledge, dedication, and willingness to work with me to make everything just what I want. She is very knowledgeable about plants and has taught me a lot. (From four stars, to three to one) I am a returning customer with Shubha. Even though we were not entirely happy with the work five years ago, we still wanted to reach out to her and give her another chance. When we approached Shubha for this job, we had a small budget (~$5,000). We just wanted her to help us with the gardening. We had weed all over, overgrown bushes and pruning, and yard clean up. There was an unfinished pathway that we didn't finish last time that had weeds. She recommended us to put pavers on it. We calculated about $15k+ for that. Even though it was over our budget, we approved this project. Here are the things that didn't went well: We hired her to help us de-weed all around our home and prune our bushes. Which she did an overall cleaning of weed on Gardening areas only (+$1800). Later found out many items were Out of the Scope. So we ended up with many other areas of weed and only roses pruned. If an invoice came, and I pointed out there were still things to be done, she would say she did few things for free, so how could I tell her it was not done. If I spoke up, she would get very upset. We had to buy extra pavers for this paving job (168 pieces), which we went together to the store to purchase and she provided 'delivery service' to bring home. However, she said it was my responsibility to unload the pavers myself from the truck for the paving job I hired her to do. Her arguments is that those pavers belonged to me, so I have to unload them myself. In the dynamic of me explaining to the workers details of where or how I wanted things, it seems that I asked them for things she didn't approve. Like weeding, indicating where I wanted left over pavers, and straightening a tall plant. Which then I gladly paid for, as Extra Work. ($225) Among other issues was that I couldn't understand the goal of her questions. For example, she would want me to decide the gradient (slope) of a patio (paved circle) which I am not a professional to decide; whether I wanted to put a retainer wall that was absolutely necessary for this patio, not in the estimate (~$2000 more) The main reason for the 1 star -$1,000 was paid as Down payment as requested in the contract to be applied towards the estimates, check was cashed. -I paid All progress invoices within about one business day. Invoice come via email after 8 pm the night job was concluded. She expected payments the next morning before noon, otherwise is late. When we hit the balance of $1000 remainder. She was still asking for full payment of invoices. She explained to me that the way it works is that first, I have to pay all invoices in Full, then I will receive my "down payment" back, after her checks are deposited into her account and cashed. She pointed out that CSLB (California State Licensing Board) and the law supports it and I could check with them, and that this is common practice among contractors. I tried to reason with her, trying to work things out fairly. I had the last check for the balance of the invoices (~$663), and I asked her to exchange it for the ($1000) down payment check. She refused and demanded to have her check ready. When she came to pick up the check, she was friendly and asked me if she could go take pictures of my vegetable boxes. I reluctantly comply as I wasn't sure how she would react. She started taking pictures of my property (several) and around the house as we walked around. I kept the conversation kind and cordial. Once she finished her "walkaround", she demanded her check but asked her if I could have my $1000 check back. She threaten me if I wanted to go to court. Eventhough she was not done with the work. All checks cashed. No down payment check back. So $24,000 later, +$1000, house with weeds, unpruned bushes. Update : received my "Balance" check back. read more

Shubha was instrumental in the successful conversion of our water-guzzling, weed-prone lawn into a drought-tolerant, colorful landscape. When I went to the first plant-selection meeting with Shubha, I was expecting a lineup of ho-hum, run-of-the-mill green shrubs. I was very surprised when she asked about my preferred color palette and showed me a wonderful array of flowering plants from various regions of the world having a climate similar to the Bay Area. I had a ball selecting the plants, with gentle, patient guidance from Shubha. The plants are well-established now. They don't need much water since they are mostly drought-tolerant varieties. The biggest plus - something is always flowering Spring through Fall. Even in the depths of winter, there are some perennials that have reddish foliage, providing splashes of color during the dreary wintry season. Over the next several years, Shubha also designed other areas of our yard. Edit " Shubha's creative design helped us to reduce our lawn by 1/3, replacing it with a beautiful 12' blue flagstone sitting area surrounded by a variety of plants. She personally selected each piece of flagstone for color and shape and we couldn't be happier with the results. Her choice of plants included a variety of shapes, colors, and textures, and is not only very attractive, but makes the garden area much more interesting. Her eye for design and her knowledge of plants and gardening has given us a beautiful area which we are already enjoying. We highly recommend her. read more

We just terminated a project with Shubha and are extremely disappointed and frustrated. Her business and customer service skills are non-existent. We have worked with many contractors previously on several remodeling and landscape projects and have never had trouble with any of them. The project with Shubha was a complete disaster, and we now have more problems than we started with. The project started out OK, she had some good ideas on how to reuse and recycle materials, but she was very pushy and demanded that I do a great deal of work (on *her* schedule, not mine). She tasked me with laying out the plants according to the landscape design (which was done by someone else) because she could not be there to do it. Then she found fault with my layout! I told her that I was not a professional and did not feel comfortable doing her job in laying out the plants, but then I realized that she was not good at it after seeing the one layout she did do. She hemmed and hawed about removing existing plants from our property. It took three days for her men to start on the job of digging out existing plants (while meanwhile our new plants were wilting in pots, it was also my job to water them all) , and when I asked her to please get the area cleared for planting, it had been three days already without anything being done, she told me to tell the men myself. Which I did, but it is not my job to manage her employees, that is her job. She also demanded that I cut and dig out other existing plants for removal myself, as for some reason her men were not capable of doing this, or there would be an additional fee. With Shubha, NOTHING is in the scope of the project, and nothing is included in the quote except the very barest basics, which are not sufficient to finish the project. You will be deluged with "extras" as the project goes on. It is ridiculous. After the plants above were finally removed, she complained that there was not enough soil for the new plants, and asked me to go get extra topsoil, lay it out next to the planting area for her men, and even open the bags for them! I got the soil that she asked for, and then she berated me that it wasn't the right type and I needed to go get additional soil. In each case, her tactic is to tell me to do the work, or if I don't want to do it, she will do it, but it will cost an exorbitant rate. If I hadn't gone to get the soil, she would have charged me $85 per bag of topsoil ($85!) plus a $150 "delivery fee", plus labor fees. After hassling her men to dig out the existing plants and dealing with their attitudes, then having to go get the soil myself and even open the bags for her men, then she told me to lay out the plants for this area. So basically, I did everything myself except for some digging! I could have hired day laborers from Home Depot for a fraction of the cost, considering I did all the work myself! She treated me like one of her laborers, except not as polite, and I was paying her a great deal of money for the privilege. The irrigation system was another disaster. She charged us over $600 to add three emitters to our drip irrigation system. Complete ripoff. Worse, she said she did a complete test of the irrigation system, and every plant was covered adequately, everything in perfect working order. After she left, I found that there were many plants that had no irrigation whatsoever, other emitters had never been tested and were not adjusted properly, were clogged with dirt, there was not enough pressure, etc. During other work, one of her men accidentally cut the wires to our irrigation controller. He repaired the wires, but the power surge from the cut wires blew out a fuse in our irrigation controller. Shubha said she couldn't find the problem, and anyway it was not her fault. She made no offer to help us resolve the issue and left us without the ability to use our irrigation system, with a yard full of new plantings! After she promised me that everything was in perfect working order, we could not even turn on the drip irrigation. I spent hours hand watering everything until we hired someone else to troubleshoot and repair the problem she caused. Not one apology, just arguments. Another job was to install a paved path through a gateway in our fence. Her men did not account for the gate swing when measuring for the path, so after the path was installed, we could not open or close the gate. One of her men offered to raise the gate, or trim the bottom of it, but she would not let him fix it, and instead told me that my gate was my problem. Unbelievable. I have just fired her from doing further work because she caused us so many problems and had such awful customer service. To add insult to injury, she now wants to charge us $1250 for "change orders", anything we asked her to change about the project, including $250 for firing her from the project because of her bad performance! Stay far away and find another contractor, that is my advice to you. read more

Shubha did a great job in landscaping our backyard. Right from the concept stage to execution she was very meticulous and detail oriented. She understood our requirements very well. I have 2 young kids 8 and 4 and she made sure that the space is kids friendly and also gives them ample space to move around and play. Another aspect of the design was multi-functionality of the space which was very important to us. She has extensive knowledge about native plants, their growing habits etc. and created a beautiful plant palette for us. We had a huge lawn earlier which we wanted to reduce. She informed us about the landscape rebates that we are entitled for from the city to reduce lawns. Likewise she advised us on many such things during the entire process. She took care of every small detail in the construction phase as well and re-used a lot of our existing material instead of just throwing it away and saved us a lot of money. At every step she explained what she is doing and why and involved us in the whole process which I really liked. I truly feel that she puts her heart and soul into her profession. Short Review: Shubha seems to know what she's doing, which is good, but as other reviews I've read, not only her customer service skills are lacking, but more importantly, she does not stand behind her work to make sure that her plants survive. She's also too busy, and her customers suffer. She takes on too much work and does not have time to take care of her residential customers properly or in a timely fashion. She complained she had too much work, so I guess she doesn't need new customers anyway. She let our $20,000 investment in plants suffer frost and death two years in a row due first to her inability to plan and do her job the first time, and the 2nd time by still failing to treat our plants in a timely fashion, and then refusing to do so unless I paid her for a 40mn drop in visit to see what needed to be done on her next paid visit. The only problem was that we never agreed her drop in visit was billable, and it wasn't even necessary (she did no work, and mostly came to see a plant that had died, and that I had already sent her pictures of at her request). I spent a long time explaining this to her, she ignored absolutely everything I explained and repeated like a robot "this is for my time, you need to pay me for my time" (agreeing she hadn't otherwise done work, and never acknowledging that she chose to come and that said 40mn visit was not actually necessary if it was going to be billable). So, she chose to come to see for reasons I don't understand, and then said we had to pay her for that visit. I paid her for the rest of the work she did do, and as retaliation she refused to come treat our plants to let them die of a second frost (I have a replacement person coming today, but we got frost last night, so now it's too late). Don't let this happen to you, choose someone else. Details: In our case, after we spent over $20,000 with her on a remodel, she installed lantanas which are very nice, except that they die in frost. She of course never disclosed that to us. The first year, she calls us "Eerr, you need to protect your plants right now tonight, it's going to freeze and they're going to die otherwise". I wasn't even home, there was nothing we could do. There was massive death and loss of growth on the ones that didn't die. Ok, that's bad, but here's the good part: she charged us to come too late to do last ditch efforts to protect the plants too late with tarps, and she did not even have the cloudcover product to protect them. She told me I had to go to home depot and treat them immediately, because you know, I don't have a job or anything. I did so anyway, but many plants died as expected because it was too late. And then she was petty on wanting to nickel and dime us on her time trying to save the plants too late (we did pay for some of it) and I had to remind her countless times to take back the tarps we didn't need and that she charged us for. I paid her, but I was not happy. Then I had to pay her some more to replace all the dead plants. She did not pay to replace the plants that died due to her fault, I had to pay for them. So, what did she do the next year? First, I had to remind her that she had to treat the plants, because again, she was not on top of it. And then, she didn't do it. She could have treated them, but her dishonesty in trying to get paid for a visit where she did no work and didn't need to come, caused her to stall and refuse to come when the weather was agreeable. She then said she'd come if we paid her extortion fee, but by then it was too late anyway, the weather was bad every day until now. I have someone coming today to do the protection job she never did, and could have done months ago, but it's mostly too late since our plants just got a big layer of frost overnight. Don't let what happened to us, happen to you, find someone else for your garden work. read more

What can I say, she got a 1 star because you cannot give lower. From my perspective, she was asked to estimate for supply and plant based upon a design that SHE prepared for the water rebate scheme. She decided to omit all of the ground cover from her estimate and didn't both to share this information with us UNTIL one week before we were due to finish WHEN she suddenly remembered this issue and gave us a change order for an extra 50% of the quoted value of the job. Needless to say I told her where she could go and removed her from the contract. I then knew why her estimate had appeared in line with all of the others who had quoted for the whole project....... All I can say is user her at your own risk and triple ready anything that she asks you to sign. read more

We hired Shubha to design and implement a landscape plan. At the outset we made it clear what our budget was. We agreed on a fixed fee for the design. She came back with two draft plans of which we approved one. She prepared estimates which turned out to be 2.5X our budget. At no time did she advise us that what we were asking for was not possible for our budget or provide a plan that fit the budget. Needless to say major changes to the plan were needed to bring costs down so we compromised significantly. She told us a revised plan would not be given unless we paid her in full which, being the trusting folks we are, we did. When revised estimates came in they were still 2X the budget. Additionally things not impacted by changes had been inflated over the previous estimates and other things added. Her excuse was that she had "forgotten" to add those earlier to the estimates. In other words, she omitted items she knew would be needed from the estimate, if she had included them the estimates would've been 3-4X the budget. By now I started to get a bad feeling for this, so we told her we only wanted design completed, we would go elsewhere for implementation. She immediately turned unprofessional and unresponsive. 4 emails, 4 voice calls and 4 texts went unanswered and she finally responded a week later accusing us of "wasting" her time and letting us know no other design would be provided. Apparently her time is far more valuable than that of her customers. She kept telling us we had approved her design and then asked for changes, completely ignoring the fact that she provided a plan (without estimates) which we approved only to find out later that it cost 3 times what we told her on Day 1 our budget was. The bad part is spending on design we never got. The good part is we saw the scam for what it was before doing more. As others have pointed out here, her customer facing skills are zero. Eventually we hired another landscaper to implement her original design and it cost us one fourth of what she quoted. Take your business elsewhere unless you love being scammed out of your hard earned money. read more

I've been working with Shubha to try to reach an understanding about the aspects of her work that I was disappointed with, and I'm left feeling even more disappointed. She felt it was unfair and deceptive in my Yelp review about the electrical work, so I'd like to clarify that. She did not perform work that wasn't up to code. The electrical system I have right now is not work she did. Her job was to diagnose the problems with my existing electrical system, and that diagnosis is what I was disappointed with. Her diagnosis took two hours and twenty minutes and her conclusion was that my lights were shot but the pond pump works fine. She explained it took this long because each and every light was checked, but with only a handful of lights, I still couldn't see why it would take so long. She didn't reply back when I probed further. Moreover, her diagnosis was incorrect and incomplete. It was incorrect in that the pump did not in fact work correctly, and it was incomplete in that she did not inform me that the electrical system I had wasn't up to code, which I would expect from any competent electrician hired to diagnose my electrical system. I'd also like to clarify that she usually called when she was late to our appointments. I can only think of one time she didn't call. My biggest disappointment now is how she handled my feedback. She seemed very offended, and debated with me about it. She didn't seem interested in reaching an understanding or making sure I was a satisfied customer. read more

Shubah designed our backyard garden in 2005. My husband does our gardening so he requested plants that would do well with once a week care from a home gardener. Shubha worked with our existing trees and plants, adding a variety of colors, textures, and types of plants to our garden. She also added a water feature (fountain), seating area, and arbor to the plan. Irrigation for the plants was also installed. Over the past six years, we have found our garden to be a daily source of pleasure. I was impressed that Shubha brings a Master's degree in Botany to the process. This knowledge resulted in a garden that is rich in plant diversity. She also involved us in the design to make the garden a personal reflection of our taste and preferences and stayed within our budget. One of the worst in customer service. What was asked of her was existing landscape redesign to meet my needs, for which she says she would need a visit to understand the scope and my needs to offer design services. For a site visit she would charge a fixed amount which verbally I agreed(In my experience first time ever some one needed to paid for a visit(like a handyman will charge for repair visits), but in my experience no other designer/architect needed to be paid before we agree on a service scope and enter into a contract on that scope). I ask her to postpone the visit but she voluntarily offers to visit herself, and comes back with a bill saying consulting services because she met someone else on the site and she decided to spend her super valuable time with him. She would want to charge hourly when there was no consent given verbal or written given for that. She would send an invoice saying hourly charges for design services. Who asked for design services? she was to understand the scope provide proposal of services she could offer. Who agreed on a hourly rate/price? She fails to understand this and don't want to even change her incorrect invoice for services not provided and/or asked for. I am glad that I did not consider her services and my understanding and rating corroborates with many of the clients here. read more

Although the work that Shubha performed for me was not really design, I can say that she is very knowledgeable about plants and how to best maintain what I have now. I would definitely consult her when I am ready to rework the existing landscape. I found her to be prompt and serious about her work. read more

All dogs, cats, and other animals would use my front lawn as their personal rest stop. Shubha suggested a free standing interlocking stone wall and reducing the lawn by 50%, replacing with water conserving tree and numerous plants. (Qualifying for a Landscape Rebate Program.) The landscape magically appeared in two weeks due to Shubha's professional knowledge of design and space, creating of oasis of beauty for years of enjoyment. Oh, and also color coded the plant mulch around wall and plants to correspond with the house roof line. The above could not be done without Shubha's knowledge of landscape design, hands-on, hard work and due diligent to all the fine details this project needed. I originally contacted Shubha in 2015 with a general idea about replacing my front yard with natural water-tolerant low maintenance landscaping. She listened to my thoughts and we developed a great detailed design plan. She really knows her plants and is very creative. She helpfully provided pictures of plant alternatives which was of great help to me to visualize her plan. The actual removal of the existing "landscaping" and planting of the new went very quickly and smoothly. After about a year she happily returned at my request to inspect matters and did some minor shaping of plants and adjustments to the sprinklers. I note that several reviews allude to poor customer service and communication skills. Shubha's strength lies in her Horticulture background-which is what I was looking for. She is very knowledgeable and is able to listen and recommend correct plants/trees/shrubs taking into consideration all factors; size, color, soil conditions, water needs, maintenance needs, sun/shade, disease tolerance, bugs, and smell. Garden is almost 2 years old and is holding-up well considering my horrid clay soil. She worked with me when one of the high $$ tress was found to have a disease (no fault of her own) by talking to the nursery and standing by her work.
