Yummy Yummy. They will let you sample any of the barks that you can get in milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate. They are very light but cost 72 dollars a pound. They also offer 4 dollar truffles, which are very rich. My wife and daughter got 1. They can va illa or cherry cream in the middle. I went for the garbage dark chocolate, pecan milk chocolate, and strawberry white after sampling each. Lavender is a big deal in NM, but i was not a fan of the chocolate. They ship throughout the US. Lovely place to visit when in Madrid. Stopped in while traveling the turquoise trail and was blown away by this shop. Harvey and Nan are amazing people and will welcome you into their shop with open arms. We sampled a variety of different flavors before purchasing a small stash of chocolate to hold us over for the rest of our trip. My husband and I were in New Mexico for a quick Fri night - Sun night weekend trip (we've been doing like a string of mini-moons with our companion pass lol), and my coworker suggested the scenic byway drive from ABQ to Santa Fe. It's tagline is "fair trade small batch hand crafted" - and it definitely delivers This little chocolate shop had some of the most unique chocolate barks I've ever tasted, in true New Mexico fashion. It's around $10+ for a 1/4 lb of chocolate bark. You can pick and choose sizes and flavors and they weigh it. My husband and I got like 4 small pieces to munch on while we walked around Gypsy plaza and the shops in Madrid, total about $7. They have dark, milk, and white chocolate blends to suit everyone's fancy Our order (from my poor memory recall, probably not exact): - dark chocolate with cashew and green chile powder with margarita salt (AMAZING, super unique and probably my favorite, with a little spicy kick at the end) - milk chocolate with mint (delicious, exactly how you think it would taste and better) - dark chocolate with matcha and strawberries (interesting) - milk chocolate with toffee and salt (delicious) The service was super quick and nice, everyone was wearing masks but I'm not sure if there was much hand sanitation going on. Interesting shop near the Mine Shaft Tavern. This time around in Madrid I wanted to go deeper. As I froze my butt on the porch of the tavern I noticed this place along with the many other unique shops in the area. I knew when I when I read chocolate under the sign I was in for a treat I didn't realize that's all there was. Not complaining just found it interesting. Shugarman's caters to all sweet tooth's from dark, white, and milk chocolate there's plenty of choices to satisfy that craving. They even offer truffles! I tried a truffle and I have to say it was interesting. With truffles I expect more of a melt in your mouth type deal. This one was more gourmet and similar instead of the mouth in your mouth it's a bit of a chewer with some cherry in the center. The staff is very friendly and welcoming but be advised the shop is small and they are limiting capacity. Next time your in Madrid, check them out! Get your sweet tooth satisfied! read more

I felt a little uncomfortable with the compliments: nice earrings, nice dog, nice mask (reaching out to touch me), nice shoes on the dog... Figured she might be lonely. (thought it was an artist commune). I was being checked out and almost out the door. Must have hit the Passive aggressive nerve: The young lady cashier asked "if I was going to eat all that, or if there was someone with me." Then I watched as the other employee patted her on the side as I turned to leave. Incredible. To make it worse, the chocolate flavors mixed with spiced magno were good, but the chocolate wasn't tempered right. It doesn't have that snap like chocolate does when it's made well. There's almost nothing better than chocolate for dessert than chocolate. There's a small shopping area next to the Mine Shaft with a chocolate shop. So a real short walk puts us at the front door. It's a really small shop run by a couple that reminded me of hippies from the 70's. With a flair for chocolate. Their chocolate is organic & fair trade, The case is filled with thin sheet style in light, dark or white chocolates with a variety of toppings. Most include chili of some sort. We opted for some freshly finished dark chocolate turtles made with pecans with a hint of chilis and a dark chocolate with mint chips and again a slight hint of chili. Nothing beats fresh chocolate. Good flavorful chocolates are a bonus. I have a feeling this will become a regular stop. read more

Yes, I will continue to order it for myself and send it to friends who are tired of hearing me talk about how great it is. My friend explained it best, "it is not a treat, it is an experience." That was about the white chocolate with hibiscus, ginger, and lemongrass. My story: I was visiting a friend in New Mexico, and one of his buddies suggested that we go get chocolate. I was on board, until he said that it was over an hour away. Yeah, polite pass. We ended up making a day out of seeing some of the surrounding area, which was nice. However, after having visited the shop, "Jesus H. tap dancing Christ, I have seen the light." I would gladly drive two hours, each way. Harvey is an absolute delight and a wizard at what he does. I saw the shop sign as I was exiting the tavern after a beverage. I was intrigued but, not expecting to find what I did. I thought it was going to be an unoriginal chocolate shop. I was definitely wrong. It was an artisanal chocolate shop. The choices of chocolate were dark, white, and milk. They had very unique flavors. The ones I ended up purchasing were lavender, cocoa nibs, almond, and their 3 Chile with lime/orange essence. There were plenty of other flavors. I was super stoked that the dark chocolate was vegan! Four stars for the chocolate, a fifth for the winning attitude from staff. The owner's psilocybin t-shirt was a winner, too. (Fun little coincidence: the documentary "Searching for Sugar Man". Find him in Madrid, NM.) So I'm officially a chocolate snob, and you can add that to my beer, coffee and charcuterie snobbery list. Thanks to a local gem of a purveyor, Eldora, I've tasted the mountaintop and very little compares, I won't touch shiny chocolate, and most supposed craft stuff severely disappoints. Simply put, I likes me some dank, dark, complex $hit. When we walked in and were immediately offered samples of literally anything on the shelf, I was like, nah, this dude isn't cooking up the chronic, if he was, he'd sample off the profit margin. But my first bite? Not bad! This product registered on the high end of my personal spectrum, not award-worthy but definitely the real deal. And our conversation made it super clear to me that this shop actively supports and promotes other purveyors, very cool. My kiddo loved her lil' brick of cacao and the price wasn't too steep. I loved this place! We've been to Madrid a few times and never venture off to this area--but it's now on the agenda. We left with a ton of chocolate... :P After shockingly bad service over at Java Junction, we came over here and it was a breath of fresh air. We were greeted with a smile and got to taste a bunch of their UNIQUE chocolates! My favorite had some chili in it (I can't remember the name, there was so many good ingredients in it). They also had a delicious lavender chocolate. Also, the one with cantaloupe was surprisingly tasty, we left with some of that as well. The lady working was so warm and cheery, I knew I had to leave a review (we came up on 9/9/18). If you come up to Madrid, don't make the mistake of skipping this place! Chocolate Lovers.... this is a must stop! It'll be like a scavenger hunt since the little town of Madrid and this store are off the beaten path. It's a small but AWESOME Chocolate Shop tucked around the corner of a building from the main drag of Madrid. (It's in one of the first shop buildings on the east side of the road if you are traveling north on the 14.) They have all sorts of chocolate "barks" (let's call it)... huge chunks of chocolate with all sorts of yummy toppings... you pick one and they break off a hunk for you. The chocolate was rich and smooth. The toppings really helped enhance the chocolate flavor... it didn't detract from it. I went with the dark chocolate one with everything on it... did not disappoint. It was 2 days ago that we found this gem and I'm still savoring the memories of the goodness that was this chocolate. I love chocolate in small doses... but I ate the whole hunk of chocolate I got in one eating. There was no saving some to enjoy later... I just couldn't resist eating the whole thing. Shugarman's (ingenious name for this place!) is like a magical little chocolate shop that grants your wish that you didn't even know you had. If Harry Potter had a chocolate shop, this would be it. Harvey, who runs this place, is a gem. Madrid, NM, where this is located, is like out of a movie - in the middle of nowhere, an old mining town filled with art galleries and home-spun wonderfulness (yes that is a word). I recommend the lavender chocolate. But any of it is incredible. I want to know where Harvey gets the cocao he uses. Without a question, it's world class. The owner, Harvey, is a food industry veteran, and he has set up shop in this lovely little town dishing out truffles, fudge, and the like. For the record, I don't have a sweet tooth. Never have. A few of my friends and I were visiting New Mexico for the first time - we stumbled upon Shugarman's on our drive via the Turquoise Trail from the Albuquerque airport to Santa Fe. We had heard a bit about Madrid and were intrigued, so we decided to stop in the area for lunch since it was on the way. After lunch, we decided to mosey around a bit, poking our heads into the few local little shops that are in this adorable ghost town. And that is when we stumbled upon Shugarman's Little Chocolate Shop... we didn't realize the high point of our long weekend would literally come as SOON as we landed in New Mexico! Harvey is the shopowner and delighted us with all kinds of free samples and wonderful conversation about how he came to set up shop in Madrid. His life story / adventures were truly inspirational... especially for our small clan of 30-something women who have some serious soul searching to do to try and figure out what we are meant to be doing with our lives. Needless to say, Harvey QUICKLY became our unofficial life mentor (very much unbeknownst to him), given his transition from successful big city living to small town chocolate shop owner. We could not stop referencing Harvey throughout our weekend - he really supported us through our vision quest this weekend. The only bummer (understatement) was that we missed him when we stopped through Madrid on our way back from Santa Fe to Albuquerque (his shop was closed at the time). This little shop does smell good when you walk in, but it is not worth it! The price of the chocolates is not posted anywhere. It is $10 a 1/4 pound which means that they are charging $40 a pound! Again not worth it. They make mint bark by melting the main chocolate, pouring it into a pan and using store bought mint chips and pouring them on top of the main chocolate. Lazy way to do this and too much mint chips! I bought a pecan turtle and there was barely any caramel on it. The caramel was bland- needed a bit of salt and more cream and butter. Think twice before shelling out your money for their chocolates. read more

This is the kind of place that makes a trip memorable, thanks to the kind-hearted spirit of owner Harvey Shugarman. We were greeted with a smile and generous samples the second we walked in. Exotic flavors like cashew chili lemongrass, lavender hibiscus, and more traditional flavors that still made an impression on our tongues. My husband and I so badly wanted to buy a few hunks of chocolate but were concerned they would melt during our continuation along the Turquoise Trail, which included a stop at the outdoor sculpture garden in Cerrillos (and it was blazing hot that day). Well! Harvey not only gave us a refrigerator pack but knows the owners of the sculpture garden and told us to tell them that Harvey said we could store the chocolate in their home fridge during our garden visit. He then gave us a hunk of Kevin's (the sculpture garden artist) favorite chocolate and said to give to Kevin as a treat. When we arrived at the sculpture garden, everyone there knew Harvey and, of course, they would store our chocolate as we perused the outdoor garden. And, of course, artist Kevin was delighted to receive a gift of his favorite chocolate from Harvey. It was an experience that demonstrated how closely everyone along the Turquoise Trail is tied to each other and the friendly vibe of the whole stretch.
