milk chocolate with toffee and salt (we got a bunch more flavors but ate them so fast lol)

My husband and I were in New Mexico for a quick Fri night - Sun night weekend trip (we've been doing like a string of mini-moons with our companion pass lol), and my coworker suggested the scenic byway drive from ABQ to Santa Fe. I would say Madrid is one of the "bigger" (which is hilarious, because it's not big AT ALL if you're from an urban city) towns on the Turquoise Trail. I would say out of all the places / little shops we visited in Madrid, this little chocolate shop by far takes the cake. It's tagline is "fair trade small batch hand crafted" - and it definitely delivers This little chocolate shop had some of the most unique chocolate barks I've ever tasted, in true New Mexico fashion. It's around $10+ for a 1/4 lb of chocolate bark. You can pick and choose sizes and flavors and they weigh it. My husband and I got like 4 small pieces to munch on while we walked around Gypsy plaza and the shops in Madrid, total about $7. They have dark, milk, and white chocolate blends to suit everyone's fancy Our order (from my poor memory recall, probably not exact): - dark chocolate with cashew and green chile powder with margarita salt (AMAZING, super unique and probably my favorite, with a little spicy kick at the end) - milk chocolate with mint (delicious, exactly how you think it would taste and better) - dark chocolate with matcha and strawberries (interesting) - milk chocolate with toffee and salt (delicious) The service was super quick and nice, everyone was wearing masks but I'm not sure if there was much hand sanitation going on. The man and woman running the shop were super great at explaining their shop. Overall you might think the flavors are bonkers, but they're very good. Very tempted to have things shipped.

Interesting shop near the Mine Shaft Tavern. This time around in Madrid I wanted to go deeper. As I froze my butt on the porch of the tavern I noticed this place along with the many other unique shops in the area. I knew when I when I read chocolate under the sign I was in for a treat I didn't realize that's all there was. Not complaining just found it interesting. Shugarman's caters to all sweet tooth's from dark, white, and milk chocolate there's plenty of choices to satisfy that craving. They even offer truffles! I tried a truffle and I have to say it was interesting. With truffles I expect more of a melt in your mouth type deal. This one was more gourmet and similar instead of the mouth in your mouth it's a bit of a chewer with some cherry in the center. The staff is very friendly and welcoming but be advised the shop is small and they are limiting capacity. Next time your in Madrid, check them out! Get your sweet tooth satisfied!

Just HAD to stop for chocolate and was not disappointed but very pleased with this small store making their own chocolate. We were offered several tastes of dark, after being asked our preference. We walked out with a hunk of dark chocolate with green chilies and lemongrass: unique and delicious. Store is very small but absolutely worth a stop if you are on the turquoise trail

The variety of offerings including spicy chocolate options are why I made a purchase. I felt a little uncomfortable with the compliments: nice earrings, nice dog, nice mask (reaching out to touch me), nice shoes on the dog... Figured she might be lonely. Had fun talking about chocolate options and I enjoy writing travel reviews. (I'm on a year RV tour, solo not that I told them that) It went sour when I made a remark that I was surprised at all the bikers. I was in awe really. It was so lively and fun. (thought it was an artist commune). I was being checked out and almost out the door. Must have hit the Passive aggressive nerve: The young lady cashier asked "if I was going to eat all that, or if there was someone with me." Then I watched as the other employee patted her on the side as I turned to leave. Incredible. To make it worse, the chocolate flavors mixed with spiced magno were good, but the chocolate wasn't tempered right. It doesn't have that snap like chocolate does when it's made well. Funny analogy for me finishing an otherwise pleasant experience, it didn't end well.

There's almost nothing better than chocolate for dessert than chocolate. There's a small shopping area next to the Mine Shaft with a chocolate shop. So a real short walk puts us at the front door. It's a really small shop run by a couple that reminded me of hippies from the 70's. With a flair for chocolate. Their chocolate is organic & fair trade, The case is filled with thin sheet style in light, dark or white chocolates with a variety of toppings. Most include chili of some sort. We opted for some freshly finished dark chocolate turtles made with pecans with a hint of chilis and a dark chocolate with mint chips and again a slight hint of chili. Nothing beats fresh chocolate. Good flavorful chocolates are a bonus. I have a feeling this will become a regular stop.

I saw the shop sign as I was exiting the tavern after a beverage. I was intrigued but, not expecting to find what I did. I thought it was going to be an unoriginal chocolate shop. I was definitely wrong. It was an artisanal chocolate shop. The choices of chocolate were dark, white, and milk. They had very unique flavors. The ones I ended up purchasing were lavender, cocoa nibs, almond, and their 3 Chile with lime/orange essence. There were plenty of other flavors. I was super stoked that the dark chocolate was vegan! Definitely recommend you stop in. The shop owner was super nice and will let you sample! I also believe he ships his products.

Must stop in Maa-drid. Quaint entrance in a quaint town. Unique and delicious chocolates. Owners let you try whatever you please and weight whatever you want to purchase. On the pricey side but let me tell you - the chocolate was devine! My favorites are the white chocolate with lavender and I don't even like white chocolate, raspberry and coconut. The owners and their dog were a delight to talk to and you can tell they truly love what they do.

Delicious handmade chocolate! Your sweet tooth will be satisfied. Calm atmosphere and interesting flavors such a lavender and mango chili (which were both delicious). Check it out!

Chocolate heaven when you walk in the door. We make it a point to stop here every time we are in Madrid not only for the great chocolate being made at this establishment but to talk with the owner Harvey Shugarman. There is white, dark, milk chocolate with an assortment of extras including green chili ( we are in New Mexico)mango, lemon grass, cashews, pecans and cherries. Harvey is very generous with his samples when you walk through the door. What I do when I have a piece of the chocolate; I mash some of it to the roof of my mouth so the flavors will bloom and stay with me longer.

We ordered the Jeffersonian and the Italian Citrus elixirs. Both are 74% chocolate. While the Italian has lemon and orange zest with cinnamon and vanilla, the Jeffersonian has nutmeg and vanilla. The citrus was quite evident and refreshing while the nutmeg gave the Jeffersonian a very earthy flavor. Even though this time we didn't have their truffles, their flavors are unique with lavender, fruits, and even chiles. If you are in for unique sweets and rich elixirs, I absolutely recommend Kakawa.

Though the chocolates are quite costly, $4-5 per piece. I also had a mint chocolate ice cream. Chocolate pieces are creamy Mango smoothie is refreshing. I recommend checking this unique place out when visiting Santa Fe.

The charming farmhouse exterior gives way to a cozy country store atmosphere inside, making the entire place feel warm and inviting. One of my favorite parts was the wide-open kitchen, where you can watch the staff hard at work. Even without booking an official tour, it feels like you're getting a behind-the-scenes look at the chocolate-making process. The experience is made even better by the incredible front counter staff. They were patient, knowledgeable, and genuinely excited to share what they do. We were offered samples, walked through much of the process, and never felt rushed. I'm not going to list everything we ordered. There were simply too many delicious items to mention. But I can confidently say this was some of the best chocolate I've ever had. Every bite tasted exceptionally fresh, clean, and thoughtfully crafted. The flavors were rich without being overwhelming, and somehow every piece left me wanting just one more. It might be a blessing that they aren't more conveniently located... but honestly, I can't think of any downside to eating their chocolate more often.
