This came up quite a bit when researching what we should do along the Turquoise Trail. The soda shop is tucked away in the back of the main shop that sells stuff. I ordered a shake and my husband got the jalapeno poppers. Both were pretty decent, nothing super special, but they hit the spot for a quick snack while walking down the street. The staff here were absolutely delightful. Both ladies were very nice and kept up with the busy crowd. The place I feel is definitely more experience than fantastic food, but I think it's still definitely worth stopping and checking it out. read more

Great store/art gallery in Madrid. Very cute place, welcoming, big, it keeps going on and on. It's not pretentious or cheesy. You can find some nice souvenirs here, reasonable prices. Very nice customer service, clean restrooms in the back. I could have spend more time here since they have cute merchandise, so I'd recommend Jezebel if you are shopping for a nice gift or a cool souvenir for yourself. This was my first time back in Madrid in 23 years. Thank goodness some places don't change. Oh, businesses come and go, but the charm and vibe and size are exactly as I remembered! We drove in, parked, watched the PRIDE Parade, then stopped in this cute as a button place for lunch. We sat in the shade on the front deck, but there are two other places to dine, too. You can sit inside the store or venture out back. I like people watching, so we had a street side view. The brisket sandwich was excellent! Smokey brisket, melted cheese, lettuce, red onion, and the best homegrown tomato I have had this year! I wish I had gone back to the counter and ordered JUST a sliced tomato on the side! Man, that tomato actually TASTED like a tomato! The other star on my plate was the perfectly cooked french fries. Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside! Yum! Evidently everyone else in town knows this as an ice cream place. Saw lots of giant sized waffle cones brimming with ice cream pass by me. I'll give the ice cream a try the next time I visit Madrid. We came in and bought a few trinkets. A sterling silver chain and my son wanted two jibbitzs for his crocs. Service was fine and prices were fine. The quality of the sterling silver jewelry was nice and more expensive than the shop we saw in Cerrillos. But I think the quality is better. You have the choice of two routes to take from Albuquerque to Santa Fe. The more popular one is the freeway that takes about an hour if you don't run into traffic, which I think may be a foreign concept in New Mexico, or you can take the road less taken. The so-called Turquoise Trail was recommended by the Budget car rental agent to whom Jamie W. and I listened intently as if he was as reliable as the Farmers Almanac. It takes nearly twice as long to get to Santa Fe... But hey, you get to stop in the tiny hamlet of Madrid where they filmed the John Travolta/Tim Allen cinematic classic, "Wild Hogs". Yeah, I never heard of it either. We decided to bypass the diner featured in the film in favor of the art gallery/cafe here because we were feeling pecking and tired. The cafe is set up in the back and offers a robust menu of diner fare, certainly more selection than you would expect from a place that sells wrought iron sculpture and quilted artwork. We heard so much about the Frito Pie that we mindlessly ordered one priced at $10.95. That's because it was served not in a Frito bag but as an entree with a thick protective shield of melted cheese (photo: http://bit.ly/2R7B4Xy). I'd be lying if I said we didn't enjoy it, but frankly two bites were enough for me. This is a wonderful stop. I go out of my way to take 14 to Santa Fe, just so we can stop and get either coffee or ice cream or both. It is the novelty of stopping into Jezebels as well as walking along and seeing the shops and galleries in Madrid. Every server we have had at Jezebel's has been very friendly. This was so unexpected! On our drive from Albuquerque to Santa Fe, we took the longer route so that we could explore the turquoise trail. On it, we found Jezebel, a soda fountain. Hungry from our travels, we stopped in for ice cream and a snack. At the back of the store is a small restaurant with ice cream, gelato, milkshakes, interesting soda creations, and lunch food of the Tex Mex variety. We sampled the red chile chocolate (Mayan), the green chile vanilla caramel (New Mexican), and the banana blueberry (Turquoise). The banana blueberry was simply outstanding! It reminded me of banana pudding studded with frozen blueberries. After tasting it, we were all sold on both the flavor and the bright, beautiful turquoise color! We each got a scoop of this and a scoop of the red chile chocolate, which had a deep chocolate flavor and a little heat to accompany it. To go with our sweet treat, we split a chicken quesadilla, which was a decent snack. After watching the lady behind the counter assemble it in the makeshift kitchen, I was very pleasantly surprised by how good it was! The portion sizes are huge - both with the quesadilla and the child scoop ($2.95) gelato, which was essentially two scoops. I'm so glad that we stopped by this place. Nothing was wrong with the ice cream or coffee which we ordered, but one thing I don't put up with is cafes or restaurants which think they're being smart by charging customers more than what is shown on their menus. Imagine paying for a medium coffee (shown as $5) and a small scoop of gelato (no prices, but was told it cost $6(!) but being charged $16³ (I think the total before tax was ~$15). How $11 = $15 is some strange math. I'm assuming that cashiers who do this are pocketing the extra money. The place itself is nice, but I never intend to give them any more of my money. I could complain about a six dollar small scoop of gelato, which is ridiculous, but I'm not. I don't like dishonest cafe mgmt. or employees cheating customers. read more

While you have that sandwich or guzzle that cold drink, ask questions of the help that have replaced the cowboys & miners who used to frequent these old wooden buildings. Everybody in town loves to tell a little piece of the history of this hamlet. And if you talk to them long enough and eat enough ice cream you will find out this is where movie companies come today to film scenes with old mining towns. Films like "Wild Hogs." Right here in windy city . . . Jezebels isn't the only place to eat in town, but it's one of the quickest and least expensive. Just an old-time soda fountain with some nice folks. The waitress let her taste it first to see if it was too spicy, and it was perfect - some spice but not overpowering. I had the bacon cheeseburger and a chocolate peppermint milkshake. In the front of this store is regular trinket store (New Mexico jewelry, art, scarfs, etc..)....... on the side is an art gallery....... and way in the back of the store is a small snack bar. At the snack bar they serve hot dogs, sandwiches, coffees, and yes, ice cream. I have no idea if they make their own ice cream. Probably not because it's not advertised as such. The ice cream is OK. Just OK. And it's not exactly cheap. But the front porch is very nice and the ice cream really hit the spot when driving along the turquoise trail one afternoon. There's only a handful of places in Madrid to get food and this could very well be the only place to get ice cream. When traveling around these parts, you quickly learn to take what you can get and not be too fussy. read more

They do indeed have root-beer floats, ice cream etc., but it has neither the magic of a real soda fountain (with a bar, rotating stools, and soda out of a fountain behind the bar), nor does it have the extra-high-quality ingredients needed for a contemporary take on a retro soda fountain. So, if you're thirsty or need a snack, by all means stop in, but this isn't something I'd recommend as a destination worth going out of your way for. read more

During a day trip to Madrid, my wife and I decided to have lunch at the Jezebel Soda Fountain, and were very happy we did. The staff was cheerful and friendly, the grilled chicken wrap was excellent (fresh greens, tangy tomatoes, easy-to-chew chicken), the greek salad was excellent (fresh and tasty spinach, excellent croutons, etc.), the root beer float was sweet and flavorful, the french fries were very good (crispy outside, a little too creamy inside, satisfying crunch, hot and freshly cooked). The only con was that the catsup was a little bland. We're looking forward to next time. read more

I understand that this is a soda fountain (at the back of a crafts & jewelry store) but it does offer a dozen or so food items prepared on-site, and this review is for the food. Which was, to put it charitably, insipid. The "green chili pork stew" had no flavor whatsoever, not even salt. Chunks of pork and potatoes floated in a tasteless broth. There were croutons on the plate, along with a (useless) cup of sour cream. I would ascribe this to some institutional food failure but the cheerful young woman said, "I made it myself." She should find a local grandmother and take cooking lessons. read more

Their home made gelato is very good. The seating area is small and while waiting in line, you had to move out of the way for people getting their order. The server with purple hair was very flakey on the order and was not picky with the very nice lady who rang us up. I would say very passive aggressive with the way the lady wrote the order. The cashier even offered to write down the acronyms the way the nit picky lady would better understand. But she said it was not necessary. After a dramatic monsoon rained out the Santa Fe International Folk Art Fair, my friend and I decided to drive the Turquoise Trail back to Albuquerque. Needing to get recharged we went in for coffee. It's a cafe-cum-art gallery. Sort of a hodge-podge on the art side but then, we had just come from an international art fair that had remarkable creations from around the world. BUT (wait for it...), the Soda Fountain is a find. It's at the very back of the store and really does have an old fashion soda fountain. The best thing in there is the home-made gelato made in the back of the shop: They have several flavors but the ones that intrigued were the Mayan red chili chocolate, intensely flavorful and perfect with vanilla (because I am a whimp). The New Mexican green chili vanilla caramel was terrific, too. My friend had her bowl affogato with both gelati and a shot of espresso. Being the whimp, I had my shot on the side. Rebecca and Sage were knowledgeable about all things gelato and friendly. They accommodated my friend's request for affogato even though it wasn't on the menu. Now, if they only sold grappa or limoncello to go with the gelati that would have been onolicious! read more

Very disappointed! The place is not what I expected as advertised as an old fashioned soda fountain. There is only a very small old fashioned soda fountain counter with stools. There are only bottled sodas which were overpriced at $3. I buy Mexican Coke in South Texas for $1.25. Nothing else about it is old fashioned. The food is over priced, not very good. When we walked in, we were not greeted. The cashier at the front did not acknowledge customers and was too busy looking at a computer screen. The cashier at the fountain did not greet us and was rude when asked what food was recommended by locals. Although the town is artsy and unique, the vibe is not so. We were turned off by the vibe so we left. Will not be recommending this location to anyone visiting New Mexico. It is a tourist trap. This place is pretty cool! A cross between art gallery and old-fashioned soda counter, it definitely is a great place to stop along the Turquoise Trail. A gallery-soda fountain-coffee-ice cream shop in one. We didn't get soda from the soda fountain but we tried their red chili chocolate gelato. It had the right amount of sweetness with dark chocolate. When we sampled the gelato, we informed the server that we could not taste te red chili. She said to wait 10 seconds. Sure enough the heat burst in our mouth. I'm still dreaming of it and wish I had some right now. The gelato gets five star but the rest of the place just seemed too commercial. read more

The main reason I give this place only 2 stars is the prices, they're really outrageous. I understand they make their gelato but seriously...$13 for a shake?!!! We stopped in for lunch one day...had three burgers (which came with fries) and three non-alcoholic drinks and paid nearly $60! That's way too much for a burger and fries. This place was a rip off. My husband and I decided to eat here because it was on the sunny side of the street, later in the afternoon. The cafe ended up being way in the back, where it was dark. The guy behind the counter acted like he didn't want to be there. When we asked for an enchilada, he said that half the menu wasn't available. I ended up ordering a green chili pork stew and my husband ordered a chicken Caesar salad. When I asked for tap water, the cashier looked at me in disdain and said "No, we're a coal mining town. You have to buy bottled." The salad was served in a taco shell bowl, which was fine but it was teeny. For $11, you expected more than a few bites. The dressing was fine. My stew, however, also cam in a taco shell which was already getting soft and leaking by the time it arrived, sitting on a paper plate! Really??? The stew actually would have tasted alright but it was luke-warm and had weird bits floating in it. It was also only a small scoop. Now I don't eat a lot, but this was pretty stingie, especially since 1/3 of it leaked onto my paper plate. Also not what you expect for $11. The best part of this meal was the bottled water, but really we just wanted a cup of tap. Avoid at all costs - overpriced, bad attitude, dark, and bad quality. Complete thumbs down. read more
