My favorite Thai place in the city! Not only is the food delicious but the owner is amazing as well. My favorite dishes are the Hawaiian Fried Rice, Chicken Pad Thai and Yellow Curry. If you've never had Hawaiian Fried Rice, you should definitely try it! Bonus, if you have a gluten allergy the owner will throughly discuss what is all safe for you to eat. I had two dishes - Drunken Noodles with chicken (that I have eaten many other places) and chicken wings. Both were pretty much inedible. I took a couple of bites of the drunken noodles and threw it away. The flavor was awful and it was dry - no moisture and noodles were curled in dry. The fried chicken wings crust was good, but the actual chicken was not good at all and I kind of ate just a little bit of it. After paying a delivery service, it was a complete waste of about $45. Our household frequents this place for Thai takeout. They have a great setup for pickup. When you walk in you'll notice all the interesting desserts in the display case which I love! I am basic and love pad thai, and it is always amazing here! I ventured out and tried the pineapple fried rice and was a bit disappointed as it had maybe 3 pieces of pineapple. This family-run Thai restaurant deserves its 5 star rating. The recipes are family recipes of this husband/wife team. The restaurants sits behind a strip mall. Most of the business is carry-out, but they have a few tables inside and outside for in house dining. The owner is welcoming and eager to share his culinary journey and their menu. His wife is the chef and she also bakes mochi, macaroons and other desserts. The menu offers a mix of Thai dishes including curries, noodle and rice dishes. They also have assorted boba teas on their menu. The owner waited on us, providing a lot of personal service that you just see very often. We felt like family. He carefully explained the heat level of the spices, which they will customize to your needs. Lunch came with a freshly prepared spring roll, which was crunchy and delicious with interesting fillings including edamame. I had the Pad Ki Mao with chicken. The portion was generous with fresh vegetables and sweet flavorful sauce. My husband had the Pad Thai with chicken which was colorful with spiral carrots and cabbage. The noodles were spicy and delicious. Lunch was topped off with two small cookies, but I supplemented with a pack of their freshly made Ube Mochi, which were absolutely delicious. This review is based on 5 or 6 visits over the last two years. The food menu is typical of most U.S. based Thai restaurants that I have been to. It is well cooked and the portion sizes are moderate (not overly large or small). The spice (or heat) is a little higher than other places I have been to so order accordingly. The service is excellent!! You will be greeted by the owner and he will describe the menu which is illustrated on a large screen on the wall; his wife does the cooking. The owner is the most gracious host of any restaurant that I have been to, very highly recommended based on his attitude and attentiveness. The seating are is small, with a small dining room that seats about six people and individual window side seating in the ordering area. It is very clean, but be aware that as of my last visit, there is not a public restroom. Overall, very highly recommended. read more

The flavor of the Panang curry was delicious and basil fried rice is always a classic. I tried curry fried rice for the first time I really enjoyed it. I highly recommend trying if you haven't. I've extremely excited to try this restaurant in person because if To-go was excellent I can only imagine how delicious it will be for a dine-in experience! The service was very fast - I order directly through the website and it said delivery time would be about 45 minutes but I received my order within about 20-25 minutes and all the food was still warm. I'm so basic when it comes to American Thai food! I really love pad Thai, so I seek out pad Thai whenever I try a new Thai restaurant. This is my litmus test for a new Thai restaurant, even though I know pad Thai is probably not the most Thai dish I could order. But whatever: I like what I like, OK? Anyway, not only did I order the pad Thai with shrimp when I visited Siam Star Asian Express, but I also ordered the pad Thai with chicken! (I love pad Thai.) Both dishes were delicious and just a tad spicy, even though I asked for mild. But I loved it! The shrimp pad Thai came with about seven or eight large shrimp, which is a good number of shrimp. The chicken pad Thai was equally tasty. I also ordered some egg rolls, just to see what's what here. I can't say no to a good egg roll, and these ones are very good. An order is five egg rolls, but keep in mind that they are tiny. I'd say that they are about the size of an adult thumb. Egg rolls come with a dipping sauce. For dessert, I got one of the tasty Thai treats they had on display: mango mochi. The mochi was shaped like little pumpkins, and they were very fragrant and mango-y. The mochi was more like a gummy, but I liked it a lot and so did my kids. The service here is excellent. I ordered at the restaurant in person and then waited for my order, which only took a little more than 10 minutes, but the time flew by because the guy behind the counter (one of the owners?) was chatting with me the whole time. That sounds like a nightmare for an introvert, and it would have been for this introvert, but homeboy was friendly and genuine in that way that Midwestern people are that's disarming. I left Siam Star feeling like not only did I find some great pad Thai, but I also found a new friend. They have a couple of small tables here, but Siam Star is mostly a takeout Thai joint. A hidden gem has finally been found - the unassuming mom and pop Thai restaurant in Carmel. They serve some classic and rare menus from Thailand, not just only Pad-Thai lol ! These are crispy garlic chive cakes aka "Kanom Gui Chai Tod" . The chef who is Thai, did a good job! It tasted like the one sold at the food stall in the middle of Bangkok. We popped open Yelp and chose Siam Star!! We had No idea what we had just done to ourselves. We had to look for it pretty hard. We walked in the door and there are two small tables and an ordering counter. Not much to look at. A little confusing. But then you meet James. He and his wife run the joint. He introduced himself. Explained the ordering process and we never looked back. He recommended dishes based on our likes and preferences and he became Babe Ruth and hit it out of the park. We had the Curry Puffs, which were like nothing I've ever had. They were so rich flavorful. For main dishes we have the yellow curry with chicken at a medium heat. Best I've ever had. My daughter had the Duck curry chef special medium to hot heat level and she couldn't even express how good it was. So I tried it and it blew me away. We also had the Thai Basil fried rice medium heat level and it was perfect. We are only in the area for two Nights and we will be going back tomorrow. It was a special experience. I've had Michelin star meals. I've had hundreds of Thai meals. This one was as good as any of those. It was epic. James and his wife have a special place. Siam Star is a unique place. It is a small place with a few dine in tables. You walk around the counter and behind the register to get to the dining room. The staff is hustling, they are moving fast all the time. They were very busy with carry out while I was there. They suggest allowing 25 minutes for your pickup order to be ready. At busy times it will take every bit of that and maybe a little more. About the food, it was great. We had Pad Thai and the cashew chicken lunch. Both were excellent and the portion size was good. Siam Star Asian Express is located just off 116th & Guilford. I made the mistake of parking across the street on Guilford -- note that door is locked / actually kitchen only. There is an "interior" parking lot for that little strip mall, that has the proper front door. There is a little table for 2 and a counter with 4 seats; so generally this is a take out only place. James, the owner, waited on me and he was very friendly. I didn't get any desserts, but there were several on display in the cases, and James said he wife makes them all. I ordered the shumai (dumpling pots), Tom Yum soup with shrimp, and red curry with pork, chicken pad thai, and a mango jasmine milk tea with boba. For spice level, I went with medium for everything since I wasn't sure how sppicy that would be. Everything was a super #yum. Hubs ate several dumplings and he usually passes on those. This is a locally owned business, and husband and wife team, HE DESERVES TO LIVE FOREVER! He works up front and he takes you through the entire menu. It rotates, so there's always something new, and he seems really passionate about not just food, but customers too. He is so sweet, and he makes you feel so at home, you just want to give him a hug. The food comes up quickly and you can hear it all being cooked in the back so you know they aren't just giving out frozen nonsense. The atmosphere is welcoming and bright. A bit small, but there's 3 tables, large groups coming here would be a bit difficult. It seems like there's a lot of takeout business. I sat in and enjoyed the close knit feeling. The curry puffs are homemade, and they had taro or potato and chicken, I had potato and chicken. They're not spicy at all, but deliciously fried not oily at all. You get 3 pieces which could honestly even be a meal on its own too. The duck curry was also delicious! I got medium and it's true thai spicy medium. You can get mild, medium, hot, extra hot, and it's very accurate rating wise. The duck was so tender, and the vegetables have absorbed all the broth, which is a red curry base. It comes with a side of rice. They not only have delicious food, but a wide array of desserts including mochi, macarons, fried ice cream, thai custard, and so many kinds of drinks! I got matcha milk tea (their milk is lactose free for the fellow lactose intolerant people out there, no up charge for milks then)! James and his wife cook and serve in this small spot in Carmel. He is a gem and took the time to walk me through the menu, using photos on a big screen behind the counter. I decided on the duck with red curry. It was served quickly with a small bowl of rice. The duck, cut into small pieces, was tender and delicious. The dish was priced at about $16 and more duck in the curry would have been appropriate at that price point. I would have enjoyed a refill on the rice so that I could finish the very tasty and perfectly seasoned curry. I will definitely be back to try other items on the menu. Note that eating inside could be challenging during busy times as there are only 4 tables that can accommodate 12 customers in a fairly tight space. I placed a to go order through the Siam Star Asian Express website, and I was very happy with my experience. I chose a time 45 minutes after the time of ordering, and I arrived at the appointed time. They were packing up my food as I walked in the door; I am always happy when the restaurant has the food ready on time as I've had issues with that in the past. Now to the food. I ordered the basil fried rice with chicken and a mango milk tea with boba. The mango milk tea was absolutely delicious. It was light and refreshing with strong mango flavor. The boba consistency was good, and they provided the drink sealed. I enjoyed this drink, and it made me eager to try one of the many, many other options. The basil fried rice with chicken was hot and fresh even after driving it home 15 minutes. The flavor was spectacular. The basil was prominent but not intrusive, and the rice was cooked as it should be. The chicken was tender, and the peppers added a nice crunch. I chose medium heat; this was just enough to make my nose run slightly, which is typically how I judge heat . I really like how many options there are for heat levels; they really want to get it perfect. I think I will get another level or two up next time. He told us which dishes were unique to Siam Star and made suggestions based on our preferences. The food was delicious. We had the boat noodles, the sausage appetizer, and Sama chicken on noodles. He adjusted the spice at our request but the sama chicken was still a little too spicy me - will have to do no spice next time. The broth for the boat noodles was rich. I was disappointed with the Pad Thai. The noodles had a bizarre, plasticy texture--rubbery and completely flavorless as if they hadn't absorbed any of the sauce. To make matters worse, they were totally choppy and broken into tiny pieces instead of being long and silky. It felt like eating flavorless bits of rubber. read more
