Our order was very nicely packaged to survive the trip home. The front of house staff were very kind and helpful, but they also seemed to be stretched a little thin. In terms of the food, everything was packed with flavor and texture. I particularly enjoy the Sichuan pickled vegetables, which tend to be a combination of pickled radish and tiny peppers with some heat coming from dried pepper flakes. The spicy wood ear mushroom is another nice appetizer. We ordered several different items, but the squid in hot and spicy pot really stood out. Our dish didn't match the photos on the ordering page, but I would argue that the result was even better. A nice balance of spice and dried hot peppers, without being overwhelming. A nice crunch from some sliced taro root. A nice texture from both squid and fish cakes. The quick fried cabbage and sautéed snow pea leaves were both excellent pairings and added some vegetable matter. All told, this continues to be an excellent destination. I have not been here in many years until tonight. The service seems pretty good and my eggplant with garlic sauce was nicely cooked and tasted very good. The sauce is very sweet, but I enjoyed it. It has a good bit of garlic and some nice ginger in there. The eggplant was soft and melted in my mouth. I liked my server. I tried to joke with the older lady, but there was quite a language barrier. It is a bit pricey for the sort of Chinese food that they make, but pretty good and they give you a lot of food. I will most likely be eating it again, but not sure how good it will be the next day. Overall I enjoyed the meal. It is pretty typical Chinese food, but well cooked. I kind of wish I could find some place where the sauces were not overly sweet, but I guess that is hard to find. I wonder if they have a black bean sauce, or something more savory. Myself and two others came to this restaurant for dinner one Sunday evening around 6:30pm. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and seated immediately. There were no other parties dining at this time. Our server was friendly and helpful with the menu. We ordered a variety of appetizers including crab rangoons, spring rolls, and pork and veggie egg rolls. All of the apps were delicious and came out hot and fresh. I thought the portion sizes were fair for the price. For entrees, we ordered general tsos chicken, chongqing chicken, and fish in hot & spicy pot. The size of all 3 dishes were impressive. The soup bowl was the largest I've ever seen. My plate of chonqing chicken was at least 3-4 portions. I was a little surprised by the level of spice on the chonqing chicken. It was extremely spicy and there was no indication of that when I ordered. It would've been nice for the server to confirm that I could handle that level of heat. It is definitely our favorite Chinese restaurant in Pittsburgh. Majorly because we love spicy food. I'm a Chinese so you also have my guarantee that the dishes are authentic. There are several seasonal menu items that I love but they don't have it all time. Craving Asian food and decided to come here for the first time after a friend suggested it to me. Many of their dishes are made spicy but you can ask them to reduce the spicy to mild. The food was great. I especially love the double-cooked pork, which is basically thin slices of pork belly stir-fried with chili oil and leek -- definitely a classic and made very well. Nut allergy warning: If you have a nut allergy, do NOT eat here. Honestly, like most other authentic Asian restaurants, they simply do not care. I had Chinese friends with me explicitly ask for dishes without nuts and yet we received dishes with them anyway, including cross contamination that triggered an allergic reaction on a "safe" dish. Review is primarily for service and food for anyone who isn't me. We ordered a pretty large to-go order for Lunar New Year and I was surprised to see it waiting among boxes of other to-go orders at the appointed time. There were a ton of people inside. Food was packaged decently. However, as noted on my warning above, they simply did not care about our request for my nut allergy. Two dishes contained peanuts or walnuts. I sampled the pork rib just to try something "safe" and immediately triggered a light allergic reaction, likely due to cross contamination. I am shocked on the recent experience. Third, the spring rolls were very heavily wrapped and very greasy. Fourth, the wonton soup was the worst i have ever had. It had a very strange flavor. Lastly, the main course was so breaded and coated that there was very little actual meat. We did not eat much and simply paid the bill with a hefty tip to the server. Leftovers were left behind. This location has been a Chinese restaurant for decades. The last iteration was Pacific Ring (sic) under another owner. First of all, it was slightly beyond the closing time posted Saturday night, but they seated us no problem. The service was very good and the food excellent. I came here to meet up with one of my friends from freshman year! I've never tried Sichuan Gourmet before, but he said that he used to DoorDash it all the time a couple of years ago! So we decided to try it out! I got the garlic chicken lunch special and he got the garlic flavor pork. The food was alright, the food was pretty oily and I wasn't sure if that was typical of the "garlic flavor", but I definitely wasn't expecting it. The waitresses weren't that attentive either, and it took my friend yelling in Chinese to get their attention to fill my water cup for me. I would definitely be willing to give this place another shot at some point, and tried more Sichuan style food. I may have just ordered the wrong thing or have expected something different! This is a lengthy review. If you're scanning reviews in order to decide if you should dine in/from Sichuan Gourmet... go for it! Great food! This is review will be based on two delivery orders. Very large menu, it's difficult to choose what to get if you're a fan of Asian dishes - there are so many great items to choose from. The entree portions are large (perfect for 2-3 people), and all come with a side of white rice. The string beans in garlic sauce are AMAZING! I've had these both times. Next time I will also get the eggplant in garlic sauce. I ordered the bok choy in garlic sauce the first time, but the sauce was missing. The dumplings are very good! Although, the first time I ordered shrimp and they sent regular steamed dumplings instead... They were delicious, but I would have rather had what I ordered. The second time, they did not disappoint - the shrimp dumplings are also very good. The dumplings in red oil is just pork meat, and the regular steamed dumplings are pork with more seasonings inside. I've also had the spicy fried chicken (great), Kung Pao shrimp, the curry Szechuan chicken, and shrimp fried rice. The Kung pao shrimp was ok, but I prefer how another Asian restaurant (popular chain) prepares it, but then again I'm sure the chains are geared towards the typical American palette. I ordered the Szechuan spicy curry chicken by accident thinking it was something else. It was good, but not what I was in the mood for. It reminded me more of an Indian dish (which isn't bad because I love Indian cuisine as well). The shrimp fried rice is top tier, and the lo mein is good as well. I know... Fairly priced spot for Chinese food. Seems to be good for takeout. I can appreciate that they have a nice authentic menu. Its a bit tough to know what you are ordering when looking at the site. Their rice balls in soup is listed under snacks, is that savory? Some pictures show it is a dessert-like soup. I was just a bit confused. After looking at the menu, and essentially randomly selecting a dessert, I settled on the custard buns. I saw these on the menu at Everyday Noodle and decided I want to try them at Sichuan Gourmet, too. For $8, you will only get 2 buns. They are not tiny, but definitely on the small side. Not worth the price in my opinion. The bun itself (bread part of it) is essentially flavorless. No sweetness to it ad all. The custard inside the bun is okay. It's lightly sweet but not runny like I expected it to be. It would have been great to see a photo or description of these buns before ordering. All in all, I might come back to Sichuan Gourmet to dine in person so I can ask questions about the menu. Ordering online is just, well, confusing. Custard buns were subpar. I really wanted to like this place since they have a great lunch special. Their sesame chicken and general Tso chicken is good but my issue with them is their rice. It has such a weird smell and taste to it. Not sure what the issue is but it happened the two times we ate here and ordered from here. It could be the water in the rice? We spent $60+ once when we ordered from Uber eats and the chongqing chicken was literally inedible and we had to throw it out. It was like fried bits and peppers without any actual chicken. Very good! Much nicer inside than it looks on the outside. We went on a Saturday at 4 and were the only ones in there - hack for dining with a baby, and the have high chairs. We got the flaming beef, which initially did not seem too spicy but the spice level builds throughout the meal and my husband and I desperately needed a water refill mid meal. I stopped by here a couple of Sundays ago with my wife for dinner. We were kicking around some ideas for dinner whenever my wife decided on Chinese food and I found Sichuan Gourmet in the Enjoy book. So we headed on over to Squirrel Hill for our dinner. Sichuan Gourmet is located right on Murray Ave and is actually quite nice inside. While the restaurant is only a single story tall, they have seating in two levels with a lower level and then a higher level where we sat that is up a couple of steps. The inside is decorated in a lot of wood tones and has stuff like a fake tree. There were also two flat screen TV's on the wall both which had what I assume were Chinese TV shows on them. For dinner on this evening I decided to go with the Chong Qing Chicken while my wife went with some type of sea food hot plate. Chong Qing Chicken is my absolute favorite Chinese dish and it did not disappoint here. The chicken was cooked nicely and was tender and juicy. Meanwhile the batter around it was airy and crispy. It was covered in dry hot peppers as well as Schezuan peppercorns, ginger and garlic. While the dish wasn't super spicy I did get a bit of it as well as little bit of the numbing. Besides the chicken my favorite part of the dish had to be the tiny bits of garlic which took on an almost buttery flavor to them. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. As a matter of a fact I actually had a discussion with my wife after we had both finished and we both agreed that our meals were that good. The sliced pork with garlic sauce was savory, slightly numbing to the tongue, and a perfect dipping sauce for hotpot. Very authentic sichuan food! We got a blood tofu dish (mao xue wang), an eggplant dish, and sour soup beef. Quantity was so big that we have leftover for probably two more meals. And the taste was very good. Blood tofu dish had cow stomach and pork intestines as well which was a pleasant surprise to me. The cow stomach for some reason have a stronger peppercorn taste to it. The eggplant dish is very standard and pretty well prepared. And the sour soup beef is my favorite. I noticed some more dishes on the blackboard in the store that was not on the online menu. Thanks Yelpers. I wanted authentic Chinese food. As a Philadelphian, authentic, traditional, new age, and fusion Asian cuisine is readily available. I wanted the beef tendon but they were out . BUT, the really nice woman at the register asked me if I like tripe or tongue, and I said absolutely. So she suggested the beef tripe and tongue in chili oil. Simply amazing. Thinly sliced, flavorful, large portions... just amazing. Crispy rice and chicken, it was super spicy (love that) and really crispy, even after driving home, it stayed crispy. Last but not least, double pork belly fried rice. I mean fried rice is hard to get wrong and they did everything right and then some. So to sum it all up, each meal deserves . I have been buying dinners here on occasion for a few years now. I usually order the dinner portion of Won Ton soup & Beef w/Broccoli. The Food is Excellent , Portion size is very good , price is reasonable , the Staff is Very Friendly ! I have a hard time trying to understand WHY anyone would leave a negative feedback like some listed here. So many small businesses are struggling these days to keep their stores open.  These folks always do a great service for me and I will continue supporting them. There was one large dumpling that was very thick rubbery dough with very little bland filling. No onions, etc in the broth. The chicken was as far from amazing as they could get. This Chinese restaurant is in the heart of Squirrel Hill a hot bed for Asian eateries. The authentic food options were really exciting. We ordered a seafood hot pot that was prepared in the large cooking pan in the center of the table. It takes time to cook especially if u order lotus root that takes 20 minutes to get soft. The result was amazing - it was not cheap but was a great value and was really fun to eat. We had steamed dumplings- and a eggplant with hot sauce that were both excellent. Order apps to hold off the wait for the hot pot. We also ordered a fancy Flaming beef that was visually fun, just spicy enough and had a nice variety of veggies. As a Chengdu native living in Pittsburgh for a couple of months, I find Sichuan Gourmet is the most authentic Sichuanese restaurant so far. having been here a couple of times, I have to say most the dishes I have ordered are above average. A few staple Sichuanese dishes, such as steamed eggplants appetizer, cucumber appetizer, Ma Po tofu, Dan Dan noodles, and flaming pans (or dry-pots) were spot on, though dish presentation and flavor details could be improved. For example, the steamed eggplants were not cut in a way they are supposed to be, also the pork ribs with bamboo shoots didn't look very appetizing (the flavor was okay). Personally, the spicy level is good for me, not too spicy yet with necessary Sichuanese flavors. However, this might not be true for the diversity of potential customers out there. If the restaurant wants to go to the next level, I recommend the restaurant could use some type of standard "spiciness scale" to meet different customers's dining needs (which is a common among authentic Sichuanese restaurants) . Service is better than average Chinese restaurants, but could be slow when the it's busy. Overall, I think it's a solid 3.5-star authentic Chinese restaurant. Nom Nom Nom Nom ... This place is delightful! As a hardcore Thai fan I frequently shun Chinese food. Mostly because I feel the bland ameri-chinese is greasy and unsatisfying. This place however blew me away with their authentic Sichuan food! Who knew Chinese food was this good! Damn those restaurants that try to placate the American palate! The millions of dried red chillies that were scattered through a pan of flaming fish, calling to me with their flavorful, spicy, and tender meat that had layers and layers of flavor. This place is just around the corner from us, so we'll definitely be keeping it as a go to. Tip - You'll have to ask for the Sichuan menu, they won't automatically give it to you.
