Chongqing Diced Chicken in takeout container

We came to Szechuan Spice for the OCA LNY banquet and the food was incredible. Everything was really flavorful and perfectly seasoned and cooked. The staff did a great job of timing with our corpses. I loved the Chongqing chicken, the flame roasted peanuts, sautéed filet mignon, and sautéed lobster. Would eat everything again!!

    Fried Sautéed Frog

I got the wonton soup (4/5) and fried sautéed frog (4.5/5). Both were good. The frog was really good; there was a lot of meat on the bones, way more than I've gotten at other places. It also came with a lot of rice, and the vegetables were good. It was a lot of food and a good value! The service was good (4/5)! They did an excellent job of keeping our waters filled and got the check pretty quickly. However, I ordered the frog with picked turnip, but I think I got the fried frog instead. I could have been a bit clearer ordering though, so that is on me a little. The interior of the restaurant is good, nothing out of the ordinary (3/5). Overall, it is a solid choice! I am excited to try more options from their big menu and will likely take advantage of takeout!

This place was delicious and I really liked hanging out with my mom. We got to real talking today and ate some delicious food that we took home so I could eat at school for the week. I really like days like this.

The most slept on Chinese spot in the city. BY FAR Went on a weekday night and there was only one other table in the entire restaurant so we were looked after by the staff well. You can tell this is mainly a takeout spot. I would recommend sitting there so you can get it all fresh The Szechuan dumplings were immaculate. The Szechuan oil they were bathed has a good ass spice to it without losing its flavor which many people can't seem to ever nail. Well they nailed it here The beef (apologies can't remember the exact dish) had the same Szechuan style of spice to taste but the beef itself was a little too salty Def hit this place up, you won't be disappointed

I stopped here for lunch with a group of coworkers. We decided to dine in and were seated right away since most of the tables were empty. The atmosphere is relaxed with distinctly Asian decor and white table cloths. Despite the formal decor, this is definitely a casual spot. The menu was a mix of traditional authentic Chinese, American Chinese, and other Asian dishes like pad thai. I ordered the beef and mixed vegetables with fried rice. It was tasty and met my expectation for this dish based upon experiences at other Chinese restaurants. Next time, I would like to try some of the other more authentic Chinese dishes, which seem to be more their specialty. Service was fast and our waiter was friendly. If you're looking for Chinese food in the Shadyside area, this is a great place to stop by and try.

The eggplant in garlic sauce is delicious. The shrimp rice roll was ok as I was hoping the noodle was made fresh. No frills place, quick service and long menu.

I tried this spot to go. A customer was leaving and I asked her what was good. She said the walnut chicken. I should have listened to her. I loved the shrimp and vegetables. The General Tso's chicken was fried way too hard. If I was close and had not gotten home I would have returned it. The beef and broccoli was good and the meat was tender. Next time I must try the walnut chicken or shrimp.

Ordered on UberEats and the service was quick and accurate. The dinners were all very large portions The walnut chicken was different than anything else I've tried. It was a blend of sweet and savory and had chunks of pineapple and toasted walnuts in it. The combination of flavors was really good and I'd order again Spring rolls and egg rolls were good. Szechuan dumplings were spicy but super flavorful and different. Would order again Orange chicken was really good. Eggplant in garlic sauce was super good. It was almost vinegar-y, but savory. Really good The prices are a bit higher than other places but it's worth it. You can taste the difference in quality.

    Peking Duck
    Matt G.

Unassuming place, but some of the best Szechuan food I've had in a while. I ordered the chicken feet with black bean sauce as an appetizer and Peking duck (half) for an entree. Both delicious. The black bean sauce had great acidity, and the Peking duck was a great mix of fatty and juicy. It's very spacious inside with some nice decorations, and all the staff were kind. I can't wait to return and try some other entrees.

I stopped by here a couple of Saturday evenings ago with my wife for takeout. Szechuan Spice is located on Center Avenue in the Shadyside/Friendship area. Since I love authentic Szechuan food I was absolutely pumped to try this place. We decided to place our order by phone and a polite gentlemen answered and quickly took our order. He told us that our food would be ready in 20 minutes. Whenever I got to the restaurant 25 minutes later my food was indeed ready. The inside of this place was massive but it looks like during Covid that they are only doing takeout. While inside I did see a poster advertising their push cart dim sum on weekends which was presumably from before the pandemic, but it's definitely something I am interested in. In any case, I ended up getting checked out by the same gentleman that I talked to on the phone and it was quick and easy. Whenever we made it back to our house my wife and I opened our food. For dinner on this evening I decided to go with the Dan Dan noodles as well as the three pepper chicken while my wife went with a lo mein and we split an order of pork and cabbage dumplings. I started off with the Dan Dan noodles and thought that they were good. You could definitely taste the nuttiness in it and I also enjoyed the ground pork. However I wish there had been some more mala to it. After finishing with that I proceeded to eat my entree. It was a good dish as the chicken was cooked nicely and it definitely had a ton of heat to it from the long hot peppers and dried peppers. What I didn't get was any ma which I thought was supposed to come from pepper 3, the Sichuan peppercorn. So that was a little bit disappointing for me. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. While I thought that my dishes could have used some more numbing, I did still enjoy them and I am happy patronize another place with authentic Sichuan dishes.

Huge portion for the tapioca pudding!

After my most recent order, I'm no longer concerned. The space itself is nicely presented and spacious, providing enough room to ensure tables don't feel too dense or on top of one another. We ordered takeout this time, and the online ordering experience was generally good (but could be improved). Our order was very nicely packaged to survive the trip home. The front of house staff were very kind and helpful, but they also seemed to be stretched a little thin. In terms of the food, everything was packed with flavor and texture. I particularly enjoy the Sichuan pickled vegetables, which tend to be a combination of pickled radish and tiny peppers with some heat coming from dried pepper flakes. The spicy wood ear mushroom is another nice appetizer. We ordered several different items, but the squid in hot and spicy pot really stood out. Our dish didn't match the photos on the ordering page, but I would argue that the result was even better. A nice balance of spice and dried hot peppers, without being overwhelming. A nice crunch from some sliced taro root. A nice texture from both squid and fish cakes. The quick fried cabbage and sautéed snow pea leaves were both excellent pairings and added some vegetable matter. All told, this continues to be an excellent destination. Highly recommended for both dine-in and take-out.

There were no other parties dining at this time. Our server was friendly and helpful with the menu. We ordered a variety of appetizers including crab rangoons, spring rolls, and pork and veggie egg rolls. All of the apps were delicious and came out hot and fresh. I thought the portion sizes were fair for the price. For entrees, we ordered general tsos chicken, chongqing chicken, and fish in hot & spicy pot. The size of all 3 dishes were impressive. The soup bowl was the largest I've ever seen. My plate of chonqing chicken was at least 3-4 portions. I was a little surprised by the level of spice on the chonqing chicken. It was extremely spicy and there was no indication of that when I ordered. It would've been nice for the server to confirm that I could handle that level of heat. I barely ate 1/4 in the restaurant, took some home, tried to doctor it up/cool it down, but it was borderline inedible for me. I loved the layout of the place. It was a little outdated and the bathroom wasn't the nicest, but the furniture and ambiance was relaxing. Parking is on the street.

P12 DUCK YOLK PORK RIBS - 17.95 This was my favorite dish of the night that I kept reaching for. The duck yolk crusted exterior provided a salty, eggy flavor that enhanced the juicy pork underneath. I'd come back and order a platter of these for myself. B12 STRING BEAN W. BEEF - 19.95 A classic string bean dish but with shreds of beef! This is a common staple, but one I continued to reach back for since the green beans were pretty crunchy and crispy, and the beef was pretty tender. V07 EGGPLANT W. GARLIC - 15 Pretty saucy eggplant that was fresh with the perfect custard-like flavor. It's a simple dish, but the stir-fried eggplant and the marinade went well with the minced garlic. We also got the (E12) Garlic Fish Filet, (C1) Chicken w. Basil & Garlic, and (B5) Beef & Watercress in Black Pepper Sc. I only had maybe a couple bites of those and can't comment too much since it's been almost two weeks. These dishes are a fan favorite among my CMU alumni friends. The food was good and legit with most dishes priced under $20. Definitely check it out if you're in the area craving Taiwanese food -- one of the best meals I had in Pittsburgh!

They have a series of vegetarian appetizers, but that's not their focus. In terms of the overall experience, the staff is very friendly and on top of things. We ordered takeout, but the online ordering site didn't give us a confirmation of our order. A quick call to the restaurant confirmed that everything was received and already in process. In terms of the food, the wood ear mushrooms and tofu skins was a clear winner. The broccoli was fine, but I would have preferred Chinese broccoli or watercress if they were available. The five spiced eggplant was fine: steamed to a custard-like level of softness, then paired with a salty sauce and served cold. The dan dan noodles were probably best suited for a dine-in experience and didn't really travel well. My partner tells me that the stuffed pork buns were good, but the solid piece of pork in the center was less optimal than something shredded or thinned out with some vegetable matter. All told, this was a good experience. The vegetarian appetizers were good but not exceptional. The various noodle and bun dishes were very nicely crafted. The hand made noodles were a particularly nice touch, with a lot more flavor and texture than I would have ever expected. If I have any requests, it would be for more vegetable centric noodle options.
