We had a reservation for Christmas Day at 7pm. It was absolutely packed inside so a reservation was necessary for that day. We were seated and someone took our order fairly quickly. We waited and waited and at 8:23pm when I saw that a table that was seated after us already got their food, I finally spoke up. It turns out the person who took our order was new and never put it in. They gave each person a canned Coke for the inconvenience. If you got, I would maybe check in on your food a half hour after putting it in because once they made sure our food orders were in, all the dishes came out very very quickly. I've never understood the bad reviews that Chengdu receives. It's a restaurant that was in my heavy rotation list when still living in my hometown of Pittsburgh. On my last visit, I was happy to get back over to Squirrel Hill and specifically Chengdu. Everything from the spring rolls to cold sesame chicken, scallion pancakes, dumplings, soups, flaming pans, and everything in between is out of this world. Never have I had bad food or bad service. Quite the opposite. This welcoming location is quaint with the traditional decor you'd expect. Very much a place to come with a group of people to order and share multiple dishes amongst one another. Forgot to take pics of our takeout. We always order Chinesr on Christmas Eve. So in tradition, we found this spot was recommended by Pittsburgh Gazette. Happy we tried it. So, it's not the typical chicken lo mein, but they do have some great options for every diet. Service was quick. We used GrubHub. Arrived hot and well packaged. Warning. The beef and string beans are spicy af and I love spicy. It was sooooo good w fried rice. The crab wonton were perfect and the dumpling soup was also very good! I can tell this spot caters to taste buds that want big flavor. Can't wait to try other items on their menu soon. Chengdu Gourmet will always be one of my favorites. They offer the perfect variety of traditional Chinese and American Chinese dishes, and even the pickiest eaters will find something they love. In a large party, your food will be served to you on a large lazy Susan, making it easy for your entire party to share. We tried a bit of everything, and not a single thing disappointed. Our favorites were the Mao's Pork Belly, the Spicy Chicken, and the Szechuan dumplings (not pictured). The original Chengdu rocks - I've eaten in and gotten takeout from both locations and they've been great every time. Service is pretty quick, too! The space is not fancy, but they make up for the decor with their incredibly authentic menu and amazing spicy food. They offer americanized favorites (like general tso's, orange chicken, etc.) but their traditional Chinese menu is the star of the show. You should ALWAYS get the cumin beef and the dry-fried green beans! They're perfect every time! I love Chengdu Gourmet, and I feel lucky to have two locations for great, flavorful Chinese food in both the east end and the north hills. read more

Fantastic. We ordered takeout, and the online ordering experience was very easy. As has been our experience in the past, the order was well packaged to survive the drive home. Unsurprisingly, the food was excellent. The Sichuan pickle makes for a nice crisp and flavorful accent. It was easy to order the mapo tofu in a vegetarian format, and the dish still had plenty of flavor. The various stir fried vegetables were delicious, with a wide variety of textures and flavors that all presented a nice crisp freshness paired with just the right amount of seasoning. I've been here a few times. The food comes out very fast and hot. Also, since often the food can be hot and spicy, it's great on a cold day. Though the restaurant looks and the prices are quite humble, apparently the restaurant has been awarded-winning. What is not so great is that sometimes they rush to get your order without thinking too much, and don't listen as hard or try to recommend based on dietary restrictions. Especially for dietary restrictions, they should patiently and respectfully listen. Also, I didn't like how some dishes turn out to be very spicy and then other times other dishes are not spicy at all. Was looking for a flavorful yet light, shareable plate for dinner. This place was great for just that. Service was quick and the staff was kind and answered all questions my family had. My favorite on the table was the pickled veggies and the beef casserole. The beer flavored duck was mostly bone, but it was still flavorful. This place just popped on my radar when I heard that the chef is a James Beard award finalist. Being that it was the Lunar New Year, it was a perfect time to check it out. The outside might look a bit run down, but the food is outstanding. They have a traditional Chinese menu and an American Chinese menu. The traditional menu has pictures to help see what's in the dish. We did a mix from both menus. From the traditional menu we had the Sichuan dumpling in red chili oil...do not miss this dish, it was our favorite! And I had the Sichuan cold noodle bowl. It had the right amount of spice mixed with peanut flavor. It was a simple dish but delicious. And they give you a huge portion for a very reasonable price. From the American Chinese menu my husband has the chicken egg roll and the General tso's. The chicken wasn't super crispy but the flavor on the general tso sauce was perfection. We also share a cup of the hot and sour soup, which has a pretty good kick! They have a decent amount of seating but a large portion of that is made up of 4 or 5 tables that seat probably 8 people. Those tables all had a lazy Susan in the center so that you could share dishes. We thought that was pretty cool. The other section is a mix of 2 and 4 person tables. It was about half full when we got there but it filled up while we were eating. When we left, there was a line at the front waiting to be seated. This place was unfortunately quite disappointing to me. It's possible that I just don't really have the palate for authentic Chinese food, but something about this spot just didn't click with me. I got to try out their steamed dumplings, pumpkin pancakes, chicken egg roll, and mango milk tea. The steamed dumplings were decent. Not great, not bad. Okay portion for price. The dough was pretty thin, meat was fine, but the sauce was more acidic than I'd usually like. The egg roll was a bit strange. It had a pretty strong peanut butter-like taste to it. Seemed decently fresh and they did provide some sauces on the side for it. They had mustard and duck sauce, but strangely, no soy sauce for some reason. The pumpkin pancakes came in a pretty small portion (3 little ones). They were pretty solid but not the most flavorful. A little crispy on the outside and a nice chewiness to them. I liked them but didn't love them. Finally, the milk tea was decent. The tea itself was quite tasty, milky, well made. But the boba they included on the bottom was definitely some of the worst pearls I've encountered in Pittsburgh. No chewiness left, just slimy and hard. All in all, I probably won't come back. I tried both this location and the one in the North Hills, and neither really hit the spot for me. Small portions and higher than average prices, but they do serve some unique dishes. read more

I went here for lunch the other day for a business meeting and really enjoyed the place... While the decor is simple and a bit dated, anytime you enter a Chinese restaurant and the back table has old ladies hand-making dumplings, you know you're in for some good eats. The lunch menu had traditional Chinese fare on one side and some more adventurous selections on the other. Regardless, the dishes we had at our table all went back to the kitchen clean...we all devoured our food and talked about how good each dish was. The time before today when I came here they hadn't even started my takeout when I had arrived and I had to wait quite a while. Not sure what that was about. The scallion pancakes are so much smaller than the menu photo leads you to believe (hard to tell in my photo but trust me) and were very greasy. If they seat you next to the kitchen perhaps ask for another seat. There was a lot of yelling. The beef soup my Chinese friend ordered for us was amazing. What can I say, they really do excel in the Si Chuan style dishes. The name of this place in Mandarin (on the outside) is actually Old Si Chuan- so it makes sense. This is my go-to sichuan place in Pittsburgh -- it has a great variety of more traditional offerings and a great lunch special selection too. Was visiting friends in their new home in Pittsburgh- they live right down the street from this place! We ordered a bunch of lunch combination since they came with rice. We ordered the pork belly, eggplant, and the mapo tofu options. Overall good- They have an American style portion to your menu which always makes me wary. I think their Szechuan style is solid but I feel that their American Chinese fusion compromises their authenticity a little. The pros about this place is that its near a lot of shops and restaurants to hang out with friends and walk around afterwards. The bad part is parking- the winding streets with narrow parking options was tough. I walked from friend's home but managed to look around in case I were to come back here and thought parking would be tough service was fast and decently courteous. An ok place to go but I would circle around Pittsburgh for other options before I settled on this place as my go to. read more

The star of the meal ended up being the Chengdu Spicy Cold Noodles. It was in a broth/sauce that I absolutely need the recipe for. The Szechuan pickled vegetables were pretty good, but a bit too salty for me. The pork intestine in the flaming pot was the perfect level of spicy and salty. Overall, a fantastic meal.
