It's always busy, for a reason, and the new look is quite attractive. The service is always good, the food always prepared well, and the martinis are excellent. Not so much a fan of this SPK location. The seats are too close together making everything incredibly squished. Some of my favourite dishes are changed on this menu and I found the lunch time service incredibly slow which isn't great if you have meetings in the afternoon or places to be. I do appreciate that you can place an orfer for take out but the staff seem disengaged and frankly I can find better places in the city to eat pasta at. Sorry SPK not this time. read more

This is my least favourite restaurant in town. The food was just bad, its a typical Alberta restaurant they use nice ambiance to distract you from the slop you are about to eat. I really don't like this place. I love Italian food but it need to be fresh and free of what I can only describe as 'can taste'. There are so many better places in town that I would recommend before this place and sadly even Swiss Chalet is on that list. read more

I'm giving a four because the restaurant is beautiful and the staff are very kind. The food has never been bad but there are a few things I wish were different. They have changed the pre meal bread to a sad crumbly bun and cold butter pats. Where did the whipped butter and lovely bread assortments go? The polo is always good. We also had the lasagna and it's just not good. It's a strange texture ground beef slopped with uncooked noodles and debunk in a very bitter sauce. The same meat is used in the canaloni and has a cat food like texture. Very off putting. We love these locations but those favourites are a let down. read more

Ended up here as we walked down Jasper ave. It was very busy on a Sunday night. Got the four of us seated very quickly. Staff was engaged and professional. Interior was nice. I especially liked the glass around the lights. Lots of wine and appetizers. The mussels Gorgonzola were a big hit. Had a really fun time. Food was good, but not really great. This used to be one of my favourite Italian eateries. I hadn't been there in a long while but back in 2009/2010 my wife and I were there about once every month or two and always enjoyed it. My last visit (May 2011), however, was underwhelming to say the least. First off, I don't know what/who the waitress was looking for but I think she only made eye contact with me and my wife once during our entire visit. On a couple of occasions we had to ask her to repeat herself because she was busy looking around the place and facing away from us while she was talking. She didn't say hello when she came to the table the first time and never offered a "please" or "thank you" during the entire visit. She clearly had more important things to do than provide even the most rudimentary customer service. As for the food itself... I'm not sure how long ago the menu was redone but what they did to their panini's is tragic. Previously they were made with a crusty, chewy, toasted Italian roll and stuffed with rich, flavourful toppings and well cooked pieces of tender meats. The sandwiches my wife and I got were on over sized, sliced white bread. It may have been an attempt at a sourdough but it was hard to tell because it had no flavour or texture to speak of. I make better toast in the morning at home. While the bread was crunchy, it wasn't actually toasted to a golden brown, just pale and sad. The overall presentation was brutal. I ordered the Panini Vitello based on my previous experiences. This time, however, the breading on the veal was way too thick and instead of being fried to a crisp texture it was soggy and greasy. The veal itself was so tough that it was almost impossible to bite through. The "sauce" that was put on it seemed to be nothing more than mashed tomatoes and vegetables that had been cooked for so long that it had no flavour whatsoever. Although I didn't try my wife's Panini Con Pollo, she commented that the chicken was dry and flavourless and she was as disappointed as I was with the experience. I don't know if we were just there on a bad night or if this place has gone downhill in a most incredible way but we haven't been back ever since. read more

Pleasantly surprised. I was in the area looking at other restaurants but everything was so packed, so I tried here and sure enough a table of 4 just opened up, so we took it. I was there at dinner time so the atmosphere was really great. As you can see by one of their profile pics ,they have chandeliers everywhere and it creates such a cool atmosphere, it looks real cool. You have the dark coming in from the outside creating a real cool atmosphere. The server we had was great. She was very professional and really friendly, good too, she was able to up sell us on more expensive wine. the pasta came and it was delicious, I was so pleasantly surprised. She had a glass of white, myself it was red. She ordered pasta with white sauce. Myself, a true favourite with Bolognese. Oh man, they do it right. I will say though, I've had better. Good fresh pasta with amazing flavour. I found the place a bit chaotic and the service slow. We ordered the chef special for the day and after waiting for 45 minutes found out that they didnt have any left. One thing that really stuck with me is that the red house wine was really warm which led me to wonder how and where they store it. Recently had a nice dinner here with another couple. Everything was great, and I couldn't say enough nice things about our server....he knew the menu well, had great suggestions. Food was fantastic, portions were huge and price was very reasonable. After dinner at no point did we feel like they were trying to rush us out to fill the table like most restaurants in this city. So I called in at 9:08 PM last night (Friday, Dec 30) to ask if they had room for a table for 3 around 9:45-10:00 that night. The hostess put my on hold and came back and told me that they had room but the kitchen would be closed at 10:15 PM. I said that's weird your online hours say your open till 11 PM, but okay and we would be there before then, ready with what we wanted to eat (as we had looked at the menu online). We drove downtown (which is out of the way since we're far Northside) and TRIED to walk in at exactly 10:03 PM, but the doors were locked and none of the staff would even look at us through the glass. The fact that I called in and checked and then walked up a whole hour before they were supposed to be closed is absolutely ridiculous. We were before the food last call and well before the restaurant closing hours. Tried to call in but whoever answered the phone was useless. Overall, very unprofessional way to deal with this situation. read more

A superb group date night! Service on point! Awesome menu! Beautiful restaurant! We chose SPK downtown for or Couples night out and I was impressed! The restaurant had a warm and romantic feel, the Lightning (lightbulb) fixtures are gorgeous. We were greeted and seated promptly and the host staff were exceptionally friendly :) I couldn't decide on what to have so I indulged in a lot! I started with the Caesar salad, which in my opinion might be the best in Yeg!! Our table also shared the Crostini, Bruschetta, and Arrancini, which were also so yummy!! For my main I seen lamb with fig jam on the menu...need I say more! It was cooked a perfect medium rare...I'm coming back for this for sure! And I also had a half order of penne Gorgonzola. There were too many things on the menu I wanted to try and I'm so glad I did cause this dish alone was worth the visit. It had a generous amount of seafood like scallops and shrimp in a cream sauce, Deeeelish! A friend of mine and I shared the tiramisu and it was a nice little pick me up post dinner, not too heavy and very Italian authentic! Needless to say I left full and had a great time. Also our waitress was a gem, she was consistent with her visits to the table, filling our wine ;) and clearing away empty dishes! All in all, we will be back. 5 Stars SPK Downtown!! You had us at the mussels!! We were here on the Valentine's weekend with a rather large party. We decided to share a variety of appetizers and we were all so full it was hard to finish our entrees. We had the calamari which were crispy golden and delicious, the meatballs which were a hit with the kids, and the mussels... The show stopper!! So tasty! We actually made the reservation here just for the mussels - You must try them! We each ordered our own entrees, I couldn't taste them all but I stole forkfuls from my friends/family around me... they included the veal manzo, the linguine with clams, penne pasta with baby lobster and the wild mushroom risotto. Amazing! I was too full for dessert but my husband ordered the zeppole (mini donuts) and they were very happy. A thoroughly enjoyable meal! read more

My son, and now daughter-in-law, had their supper after their wedding service at the SPK yesterday evening. There were a total of 26. 18 adults and 8 children. The food was perfect! A good variety of choices and very tasty. I would also like to compliment the staff. They were all so good and very accommodating. Service and food was great. For such a high-end restaurant in downtown Edmonton, we had a horrible experience. First, our waitress was terrible. We ordered appetizers while we took our time to look at the menu. They didn't have the risotto balls we wanted, so we asked for a recommendation. The waitress was hesitant, but ended up recommending the prawns. Before the prawns arrived she insisted in taking our menus away (although we hadn't ordered) because she said we couldn't eat while looking at the menu... We complied. We finally ate the prawns, which were decent, but not worth the $20 per plate. My friend asked the waitress if the lasagna was good. The waitress said, "I don't like it." So my friend asked if there was something she could recommend and she went with "not really..." Seeing this attitude my friend ordered the lasagna anyway and I ordered the gnocchi. My gnocchi was meh. Super sticky and mushy, which is an indication of an inexperienced chef cooking the gnocchi because it gets like that due to high water content. My friend, on the other hand, got a super dry lasagna. Even though it was described as a dish with béchamel and cheese, neither of those things were in the dish. I called the manager, and he offered my friend to change the dish, and to give her something better. She got another pasta dish which has better but not by much. At that point in time the waitress had been scolded by the manager for her attitude, so she wouldn't leave us alone and kept asking us "is this okay, now?". After all this mess we expected my friend to not pay for her pasta dish or to get complementary dessert or something like in every other restaurant when they screw up... but nope. Nothing was offered. She was charged for the original lasagna and no apologies were offered. For the almost $80 bill we paid for two, we expect way better service and definitely better food. Getting a time limit on a reservation after not being informed of it? We reserved two weeks early for a birthday celebration on Valentine's Day. At the time of reservation we were informed that we had to give a CC number which was fine. We were NOT informed that there would be a time limit that night! When we arrived we were told we would need to hurry as there was another event coming in. That was new to me. After the main course, my mother asked about dessert. The waitress brought our menu but told us we would not be served the dessert as it was time for us to leave, we could take it with us. NO time for coffee, which my elderly parents always have. When we asked to speak to the manager, he came over and rudely informed me that we HAD been told about the time limit, I informed him we had not. He actually argued this point with us. I told him we did not want to pay the full amount of the bill, and he agreed but moments after he just walked away because he was annoyed with us. ARGUES WITH THE CUSTOMER THEN WALKS AWAY, DOING NOTHING FOR THEM! This was a birthday celebration, which means the dessert was the main event yet suddenly we had to leave. Ruined the whole birthday! I've never been so disgusted first with the lack of communication and then with the lack of concern and tact by the manager!! TERRIBLE! read more

Disappointing at best. I went for dinner with a friend on a gorgeous Saturday and was seated in the patio. Our waitress was actually quite lovely and gave great service. The minestrone soup I sent back because it looked like dish water. The manger was very rude and asked the waitress to speak to my friend and I about playing cards at the table. We were not vulgar, loud or rude or playing cards! We were viewing my friends mini postcards! When asking the manager about this he was rude and demeaning. All in all if wanting to relax and enjoy a quiet and tasty dinner along Jasper avenue choose to go to any other restaraunt that will not discriminate or have rude management. read more

I have loved eating at SPK for years. Earlier this week my husband and I took some clients for supper there - food was outstanding and the clients were impressed. Normally I will only write about the good and great restaurants, however since I have been visiting SPK for so many years I had to comment about a couple of disappointments' in our evening. 1. Our reservations were for 6:00pm, We informed our waitress that we were not in a hurry. We ordered an appetizer to share and told Mikhayla that we would order our meals after we finished the appetizer. Despite being informed of that she appeared at our table every couple of minutes and asked if we had decided, We repeated that we were going to wait and that we were not in a hurry. Finally she said we had to order as our appetizer was on its way out, so reluctantly we ordered our meals. The restaurant was less than 25% full, so there was no hurry to turn the table over. 2. As our meals were delivered I asked for some parmesan cheese I was brought a small dish of what looked and smelled like powdered cheese!! Similar to what I can buy on a shelf at any convenience store. SPK - shame, shame where is the cheese grater with fresh parmesan brought to the table. You are not a fast food Italian restaurant - Will this stop me from eating at SPK, of course not. But I may be tempted to bring my own parmesan. read more

Fantastic Restaurant! Ate there on Valentine's Day and it was superb! Mussels were delicious and plentiful and the sauce was a meal in itself. I went on to have the Lamb chops; best I've had in my life and my GF had the salmon (which she raved about continualy). We've eaten here many times and enjoyed the pastas and pizzas. This was probably the worst experience I've had! Our server was extremely pushy to order. She wouldn't allow us to keep our menu during our appetizer and said she'll give them back to us after we ate. Felt like we were being treated as if we were children! I asked her how the lasagna was for a main course and she said she didn't like it! She had no follow up recommendation and I described to her the type of dish I was looking for. She was useless. When I asked for clean cutlery for my main dish she paused and seem perplexed and bothered at my request. Lasagna came out-was cold, no béchamel sauce and was overall just gross. The description from the menu was nothing like the actual meal. We called the manager over and explained our experience beginning to end. He recommended a popular dish which I ordered and was fine. But the kicker for me was after all our crapy service and experience they still charged me for my meal! They did not comp it, did not discount it, did not try and offer us a free dessert. Nothing. We were never rude to our server we kept our manners and until the end said please and thank you. None of the crap we got was warranted. Oh, But the server was generous enough to point out we are paying one dollar less than the replacement meal I got. How kind!! Total fail. Would never go back there or recommend anyone to eat there. I decided to come here for my birthday. There were 6 of us. As we were having dinner, my friend found a lovely long blond hair in her food. We told the server and her response was, a disgusted face and "oh gross". No apology, no offer to speak with the manager..nothing. She took the plate away and asked my friend if she wanted the remainder of the dish packed to go! Who would want that? We were in shock. As we were getting our bills (which we asked to be separated), the server asks who is paying for my bill (birthday girl). My friends didn't know what to say since we had planned to pay for our own, they had already gotten me gifts. So I politely said oh no we're all paying for our own, she then insisted on my friends to pay for me. At this time we had to ask her if my friend's meal would be taken off the bill since she hadn't said anything about it, she was like "oh yeah". Horrible. so this is my opinion on it. ive been to the downtown location and the southside location and wow is there ever a difference! the downtown location's food i loved! me and my boyfriend were very pleased! but the place itself looked very ghetto. now the soutside location i found was more clean and had bigger tables and was just overall spacious but the food sucked! my pasta sauce was dripping like water, and while i was there two people behind me complained about the service. Thou i do have to admit i didnt have a issue with the service, i probably wont be going back because the food is okay but nothing special. read more
