Booked an 8 day trip, but the Expedia system showed only a 1-day non-refundable car rental (tied to the first hotel stay). I tried to correct the car rental right away -- not a cancellation, just an extension of the rental period but the Expedia system did not allow and there was Zero flexibility by SICILY BY CAR - NAPLES -- Policies matter, but so does judgment. This was a situation where a reasonable solution was available -- it just wasn't offered. Double-check your booking on EXPEDIA and the Sicily-By-Car staff in Naples are just trashy. read more

Picked up in Milan. The check-in process was long, but that's pretty standard for car rentals. The car we got was really not a comfortable car and not what we expected, but it's probably in line with the size we had requested just a bad car. What bothered me the most about our experience with Sicily by Car, however, was the return process. We initially were planning to do the key drop off because they wouldn't be open by the time of our train to our next destination. Luckily our plans changed because we never would have figured out where to drop off. There is essentially no signage near the drop off location where to go to the extent that we went to the wrong garage and had to pay for that entrance ticket (it was where some of the other car rentals were). This would've easily been avoided if the instruction email they sent us didn't come late morning of the day we were returning the car. read more

We made, and paid for, an online reservation for a 1 day rental at Palermo airport. At pick up we had to go through the unnecessary fear-based high-pressure attempt to sell us additional insurance, even after we told them we had no need for it. The clerk's attitude was dismissive and careless to the point of not even giving any documentation whatsoever, while claiming we would get all the contract information by email...we never did! We did not get an email from them acknowledging our rental return either, not until 8 days later when they claimed we were responsible for some damages that were already present when we picked up the car and that we had video-recorded. They also claimed we had not filled up the car prior to return, but we had and sent in a photo of the fill-up receipt. We tend to add one of two liters more than necessary to compensate for the distance between the gas station and the car rental place. Today, our credit card shows a charge for more than double the rental fee, which we are contesting as there is absolutely no reason for them to charge us. I really don't know if it was really an oversight on their part to not have seen the broken hubcap and the big scratch on the car that they are trying to make us responsible for or (and I would rather not think this way), they are trying to get money from what they might consider unaware clients, after having already charged the client responsible for the damage. Either option would be an awful business practice, as one would be proof of blatant laziness, and a total lack of communication and care in regards to their fleet and clientele, and the other a lack of transparency and honesty in their dealings. After our experience with this company, we are not interested in having any dealings with them and will warn others as to their practice. We rented a car for a week in Bolzano, but unfortunately, the overall experience was extremely disappointing. The check-in process was very slow due to the office being clearly understaffed. When we finally received the vehicle, it was not cleaned at all -- inside or out -- with old rubbish still left in the car. Within 12 hours of collecting the vehicle, both the service light and tyre-pressure warning appeared. We then lost more than three hours returning to the office to exchange the car. Although we were given an upgrade, the replacement vehicle also had serious safety issues: the front tyres were almost bald with very little grip in winter conditions, and the snow chains provided were too small for the car. This left us in a dangerous situation during a snowstorm, 15 km from town, with no winter tyres fitted either. Finally, throughout the entire rental period, it was almost impossible to contact the office as they never answered the phone. read more

We've never had such a terrible experience with a car rental company. We booked through Rentalcars, and from the very beginning, there were problems -- money was taken from our account, but we didn't receive the usual booking confirmation. After several emails, we finally got a confirmation number. When we arrived in Cagliari, Sicily, we were given a different car than the one we originally booked -- a small Fiat Pandina we had never heard of. We pointed out that this wasn't the car we reserved (we had chosen a more expensive one), but were told it was in the same category. We had purchased insurance that covered everything except the underside of the car. From the start, the car didn't drive quite right -- the first gear felt strange -- but since we weren't familiar with the model, we kept driving it and it seemed manageable. When we returned the car, we were charged €800 for gear damage. We explained that the gear had been faulty from the beginning and filed a complaint. Clearly, you can't break a gearbox in just four days of light use -- the damage was already there, and the rental company likely knew it. A few days later, they reduced the charge to €650 but added other supposed damages, like broken car keys (which makes no sense -- how would we have locked the car?) and damage underneath the vehicle -- conveniently the only area not covered by the insurance. They never showed any proof and stopped responding to our emails. Total scammers. We've been renting cars for over 10 years and have never had such an awful experience. We left the car absolutely spotless on the interior, but had to return the car early in the morning before our early flight. The exterior of the car got splashed with rain and a tad dirty on the drive to the airport car rental return. Needed a quick hosing off if anything and I was charged an incredibly ridiculous amount for this. The whole process was very stressful and the worst part of our vacation. Do not use this car rental provider! After using many car rental companies in various countries, I have never experienced anything like Sicily by Car. Me and my family made a reservation to hire a 2 Cupra Leon Estates for our skiing holiday, only to neither car nor a similar equivalent was available on arrival. Sicily by Car did not appear to care nor show any empathy. They advised us they had 2 smaller SUVs but had no alternative if we did not accept this. They also advised they could not provide any refund and that we would need to take this up with Customer Service via email. As we were left with no other option we had to accept the 2 small SUVs, which meant travelling 2 hours with luggage on our knees. When I explained what had happened in an email to Sicily by Car Customer Service, once again no empathy was shown. They advised us the car we received was more expensive than the car we ordered, therefore, no refund would be issued. They also believed there was no grounds for compensation for the inconvenience and undue stress this had on our holiday. They did not care we ordered a car that would fit all our luggage in the boot and this was not what we got. Stay away from this corrupt company! read more

Wow...the worst rental company I have ever dealt with anywhere in the world that I have ever rented a car. I will not bore the reader with all the details of how they have not performed, not answered emails, calls, etc. Their car broke down with a mechanical issue on a very dangerous part of the Autobahn outside Firenze, which can happen, but their assistance from there on is horrible. SBC roadside assistance was not helpful; they said to have it towed. Italy Highway Roadside assistance would have it towed regardless, as it was over an hour and dangerous to the road. I had it towed, stayed with it, paid the towing charges, sent them all the information about where it was, etc. The next day they became very rude about it, again I will not bore the reader with all the details. A couple of weeks later, multiple emails went unanswered, and voice messages were not responded to, basically just ghosting me for the towing charges, which IMO is not that much, 136.20 Euros, to secure their asset. IMO they should also pay my expenses to get to Firenze, which I was about an hour from. Stuff happens, but the true difference between a good rental company and one such as this is how it is handled. read more

I asked the office at Bergamo/Orio al Serio airport if I could return with a receipt for the 19 EURO that the 10 liter container of AdBlue cost, and they replied (via email) "Okay sir, go in the airport with the receipt." The Bergamo office staff refused to accept the receipt, and so does their customer (dis)service, now claiming that they want an invoice addressed to Sicily by car (an original paper invoice with all the information required for tax purposes). After 30mins waiting, fully paid booking through Booking.com, they refused to give us the car because they did not fancy our Mastercard from a well-known swiss bank, no options to remedy the situation, just straight no. Booking only reimburses half of it, so 400€ down the drain. You arrive happily on your holiday and this is the first thing you have to experience. I recently have a trip in Italy and rented a Peugeot 3008 from Sicily by car office in Rome FCO airport on 12th of July and return in Venice Mestre office on 13th of July. The rental cost 210 euros and deposit of 200 euros. Initially they told that the deposit will only be hold from my credit card, however at the time of paying, it was deducted a total of 410 euros directly from my card. I complained at the office and the women said the deposit will be returned into my card after I return the car. At the time of returning the car, SBC agent confirmed again that the deposit will be returned 3-5 working days later and nothing else, she also asked whether we took photos and videos of the car and we actually did so we left right after. After a whole week without receiving the deposit or any email from SBC, I called SBC again on the 18th of July and the agent said it will be refunded on the same day or next Monday. On Saturday 19th of July, I received an email from SBC saying I made damages to the car and will charge me almost 1000 euros for the damages, without mentioning anything about the deposit. Luckily we have photos and videos and I made another complain through the email with all of the proof that ALL PHOTOS sent by SBC are damages from before our rental but receive no response from them. I tried to call SBC multiple times, but their hotline always say they will transfer my call to another department that responsible for complain and asked me to wait. However, after waiting for 3-5 seconds the call was ended !!!! No response or call from SBC afterwards, I am still waiting for their response through email. Let me start off by saying that I had some concerns before our trip because I read several negative reviews of Sicily By Car online. However, we had a great experience with them, and I would recommend them to anyone. Finding their counter at the Fiumicino airport was a little challenging, but once we located them, everything was easy. They did require a very large ($800) pre-authorization hold on my credit card, but it was only a pre-auth and never charged. We received a great Peugeot 2008 model (very fun to drive and automatic, as requested). It was easy to verify pre-existing dents and we got supporting paperwork. We drove from Rome to Cortona (where we stayed for the week), and enjoyed trips to Siena, San Gimignano, and Florence. At the end, returning the car was very easy, and the attendant verified no new damage, and we received electronic verification via email. Absolute scammers, avoid at all costs!!! We picked up our car at the Cagliari airport (Sardinia) and were told there was no damage. Upon return, after having zero incidents, the employee somehow identified two dents which were not visible by eye, there was no paint damage and you could only see a tiny angle in the material at certain angles, even taking pictures was pointless. We were being pressured to pay for this on the spot which we refused. The bill came a week later for 1184,98 €. I wish I was joking. We are being charged over 1000€ for damage we were completely unaware of, and which is not even visible. I simply have no words for this kind of egregious scam. After several entreatie emails with their legal department, including one where we informed the company that we have lodged a formal complaint with the European center for consumer protection they simply stopped responding and charged our credit card in full. Waited 2 hours for tow and then another 2 hours to find out I had to go pick up a new car, wasted half day of vacation stranded at my hotel. I suggest for everyone to steer clear of this company run by con artists and thieving staff. When we picked up our car in Palermo, Sicily, the staff behind the counter urged us to get the Gold insurance package. He said that it'll be a care free experience and they cover ALL damages and we would have zero worries. He even said that it'll cover every single thing from vandalism to theft and accidents - down to rim scrapes! His lines were "you don't have to worry about a thing". So i asked him if all the current scratches and damages on the car, if there were any, would need to be flagged, and he said no cos we are covered entirely so it doesn't matter. Being naive, we hopped into the car and drove off even though there were a couple of very fine hairline scratches and rim rubs here and there. After our trip in Sicily, we drove to Catania to return the car. We were very careful the whole trip and had ZERO accidents or rim rubs etc. But to our surprise the very rude staff over there shook his head and pointed to the side of the car and said that the car was scratched by "vegetation" and that we have to pay. Get this, they cover you if you scrape the entire car along the wall, bash it into a tree, spray paint over it, but god forbid if you have hairline scratches on the car caused by vegetation rub. I disputed this and tried to explain what his colleague in Palermo told me and was shouted down by their staff who treated us like dirt. I asked him how is he certain that it was caused by vegetation and he said "i'm an expert". That's the most ridiculous thing i've heard - how can they prove that the scratches were caused by vegetation??? My child ended up crying cos of the commotion and it was a disaster to say the least, so i stopped debating with the thuggish staff as it was pointless. Those hairline scratches were ridiculously fine and they were the same hairlines i saw when i picked up the car. The staff at Palermo said that i "didn't have to worry about a thing" and i could drive off carefree and not have to worry about any sort of accidents. Obviously this is a ploy to cheat people out of their hard earned money. I ended up having to pay £599 for the insurance and those fine fine fine hairline scratches. But if i were to smash the car entirely i didn't have to pay a cent! Where's the logic and justice in that? These are the biggest cheats we've come across and it's such a shame as Sicilian culture was a very beautiful thing to experience only to be destroyed by these terrible people right at the end of the trip. I was charged 50 euros+22% of interest for administrativo fees for having a fine during my time in Italy. This was in October2023 and Sicily By Car received the fine in october but sent it to me only in february 2024. Because they took all their time, my fine went from 53 euros to 83 euros. So I paid 91 euros (50 euros+22% interest+30 euros for been late for my fine) more than the original 53 euros because Sicily By car took their time and charged the 50 euros for sending me the information. Admittedly we were attracted to Sicily by Car for its reasonable rates, but you get what you pay for! We picked up the car in Milan and dropped it off in Venice and that is how the scam begins. The customer service representative was utterly charming, walking us around the car to demonstrate that the car was in good condition. BUT on returning the car, the company's representative was on his hands and knees trying to find any issue, and then claiming we has scratched the car, when it was a dirt spot that we removed by pouring a little bottled water over the spot. Despite the attendant then admitting their was in fact no damage, (and photos I took...just in case) he wrote it up otherwise in our report and held onto the $800 security deposit. We tried to contact customer service and received a can response and were disconnected while waiting on the phone line five times. Save your sanity and rent from a reputable company like Avis or Hertz. It's a little more money, but will save you from this nonsense. read more

The agent was friendly and gave us tips despite his not so fluent english The car given to us was a golf and a new version so it came with gps which really saved us. Disputing unfair charges is not possible! The car was not filled up with fuel as well as cooling liquid, which I had to do myself. The BAD: the car we received had slightly less fuel than full tank. When trying to solve this situation at the end of our rental period, we instead got a fine of nearly €60 for that. Many attempts to find a solution via customer service has been not successful as email responses only refer that the car has to be returned with a full tank, regardless that we received the car with less fuel. Lastly, my phone number seems to be blocked now and I am not getting any email responses anymore. Conclusion: It's an ok service unless something happens and you need to solve it with their help. They will likely charge first and later disputes of any unfair charges have been made very complicated. Sicily By Car lately went public, so I can assume that post-rental customer service is not a cost they want to keep up. If not risking with paying unfair fees is a priority, I would look other car rentals than Sicily By Car. read more
