The location is amazing, on the river, love the little outdoor seating areas and bars where you can sit and relax. Rooms were tidy and clean. Close to a great Korean restaurant just down stream. But why we really love this place is the customer service of the owners; we had a miscommunication at check which could have really derailed our vacation, but they were available, understanding, and resolved our issue. We're hoping to come back next summer! read more

The pros: Recently remodeled all over. The remodeling job looks like it was a complete stem-to-stern project, not just slapping on fresh paint and calling it good. The floors, fixtures, beds, railings, and EVERYTHING outside is either new or well maintained. There's nothing old and tired here, with only a couple of exceptions. The property has a fair amount of frontage on the American River, which looks like it'd be a nice place to fish, although I did not try it. Adirondack chairs, fire pits, strings of lights overhead, and a tiny creek burbling into the American River all create a sense of peace and relaxation. Down by the river, you can hardly hear traffic noise from Highway 50, just a hundred yards away. So why only three stars? And what were the exceptions? The biggest problem is one of overall comfort. Our room was inexplicably stuffy. We tried opening the windows to get some cross-ventilation, but not much was happening there. Plus, with the blinds, which do a GREAT job of blocking out light, also unfortunately blocked any potential airflow through the unit, so if we wanted any flow, we had to keep the window AND blinds open, and anybody walking past could see clearly into the room. There was a portable air conditioner in the room, which helped bring the temperature down, but it came at a cost: it was noisy. So noisy it made it hard to sleep. So we either were kept awake because we were uncomfortably warm, or we were kept awake by the portable A/C unit. And if we opened the window in hopes of some airflow, we got a lot of highway noise, because the second floor of the motel was right at highway level. There's one smaller issue related to the remodel: not enough electrical outlets. For a place that was probably built in the 1950s, the number of outlets was probably typical. Now, however, we travel with stuff that needs charging overnight. The desk clerk had an unusual attitude, too. When we checked in, it felt like an interrogation. Rather than ask questions, he blurted them out as if they were accusations. "NAME?" "PETS?" There was no greeting, and there were no pleasantries. Not necessarily rude or hostile, but certainly not welcoming, either. Lastly, and this is neither a plus or a minus, but rather a point of nostalgia. It's probably been at least 25 years since we've seen a room key with a plastic tag on it. Most lodging places have gone to cardkey locks of one sort or another, so it was actually kind of a cool throwback to have a real key with an iconic diamond-shaped tag. Would we stay at the Sierra Inn on the River again? Possibly. But if the weather was warm, we now know to run the A/C immediately to bring the temperature down before we settle into a nighttime routine. read more

We got caught in the crazy Tahoe storm and couldn't make it home. We found this place for a night, hoping to make it up the next day. Well they have everything you need. Heat, DirectTV, hot water, microwave, and a comfy bed. The views of the creek are an added bonus. The workers were helpful too! The power went out and they were so quick to turn it back on w/the generator. It is newly renovated and they did a good job. The room and bathroom is spacious! Pet-friendly is a plus! read more

Well had I known that the rate I'd purchased was not only the weekend rate but also a holiday level, I'm pretty sure I'd still be pretty impressed by this place. It is immediately off of the highway which you'd think would make it noisy. It can be if you leave the door open and listen for traffic. OR you can head to the other side of the building and visit the river! We'd seen some folks sitting down on the shore so we moseyed on down to the water with the dog. Kinda crazy what happened next: the workers brought chairs down to us. So we sat in the shallow part of the river with our feet in the water. Not 25 feet away was an enormous rock which kids were jumping from down to the water. It was deep enough (obviously) and the current wasn't too strong. Dog loved watching this happen so I grabbed a few beverages and hung out for a bit. INDOORS WAS GREAT. Nothing too fancy, but nothing silly either. Wood (laminate?) flooring and a stand-alone A/C unit. Didn't feel bougie and kept me from cooking. We were in an upstairs unit and that was lovely. Granted, we paid a little extra to have our dog stay with us but it was worth it. Dog paced so I took her outside to relieve herself. The outdoor area had a doggy poo bag setup with garbage. We had a view of the back patio/swim area so the white noise of the river was there if you left the windows open. I think all of the units did. Everything worked out great. Made a reservation through Expedia a while ago and they sold out. Rates were also high for the holiday pricing. Never stopped here before this. Might need to stop more often in the future. read more

The location was very convenient about 20-25 minutes from the Sierra resort, which was great since we didn't have to wake up super early, especially after a long day. We did end up driving into South Lake for food. The room was very clean, updated, and had a stunning surrounding view. My only real complaint is the noise from above. We stayed on the first floor, and the floors were extremely thin it sounded like the upstairs neighbor was going to fall through the ceiling at times, which kept me awake on and off throughout the night. It almost sounded like a dog running back and forth. Other than that, the beds were comfortable enough, and the price was affordable. read more

Craig, the owner is running a fantastic establishment here. The motel has recently been remodeled, and everything is clean and looks updated. In addition, the location is unbeatable. You are within striking distance of Tahoe for all of your recreational activities, but it also sits right on the South Fork of the American River, ripe for all sorts of fun. There are several different areas adorned with fire pits with plenty of space for seating to enjoy the views and sounds of the river and woods. Service was perfect and they even made us breakfast and dinner. Omg we had the best weekend getaway here!!! The river was so peaceful you could climb out on the rocks and just sit and enjoy or hang out on the chairs they have alongside the shore. They even have a swimming hole spot but way too cold for me now but there was a cold plunger getting in everyday. We met the owner Craig and he was awesome and manager Chris and staff very helpful. They are doing tons of work remodeling and have big plans for the place construction stopped around 4-5pm and nothing on the weekends so worked out perfect. Room was clean and they offered us wine and beer when we arrived. Later I met Jay and Diane and they were cooking and invited us to eat dinner with them and the staff. We accepted and it was awesome, great food and conversation. Chris the manager has lived up here for many years so he was full of information and turns out my fiancé and him worked at the same company many years ago, so they reminisced, Small world! Anyhow very reasonable rates, great service, clean comfortable place to stay with the beauty of the river and some solitude. Great place to come to get away, we were lucky to be invited to dinner but I'm sure that's not the norm so plan ahead there's not much nearby so pick something up on the way. I did a little gold panning and I heard that the fishing was great out back too (Craig had offered us poles earlier) I saw a few guys from across the river fishing while I was panning. We were very pleased with our stay at Sierra Inn. The rooms were newly upgraded and they were impeccably clean. The river is right there, and it was nireally relaxing to just sit by the river and have wine with our family, which BTW the wine was supplied by Sierra Inn. They also had bonus breakfast muffins and were super generoud with bottled water and anything else we could ask for. This is a high service, quality place for a great price. We skied Sierra at Tahoe and were happy with the mountain (much less crowded as the big resorts with plenty of slopes for even us kinda-block-diamond-skiers). And Moon's is only a mile away and you can't beat the friendly food there. We will be back! read more

The owners and staff here are some of the kindest people I've ever met! Absolutely above and beyond service and a very comfortable stay. Our car broke down in a storm, and the Sierra Inn was the closest place they could find. Despite it being late at night around 2AM, the owners were able to help us get a room and ensure they were safe and comfortable. We were pleasantly surprised by the modern and clean room with a king-sized bed that accommodated four people comfortably. Despite being by the highway, the stay was peaceful, and the views of the river were beautiful. We were super grateful for the ample parking, the microwave, the mini-fridge and a heater that kept us warm all night. The next day, Laurie, one of the employees, drove us and our party to South Lake Tahoe in heavy traffic to rent a car and stayed till we had secured one. The staff continuously checked on us to ensure we were okay, even after checking out. We are really gratitude for the staff's kindness during a stressful situation and would intentionally stay at the Sierra Inn the next time we visit Tahoe. read more

We found this well-placed hotel a year ago and had such a great experience that we brought the family back again this ski season. It is even better this year, with all the remodeling the new owners have done. The parking lot and roof are brand new. We had three rooms and all of them had been completely renovated - I especially loved the ceiling mounted showerheads. They were installing electric heaters in the stairs, which is a great idea to keep the ice off. The location is ideal - a short drive to the ski areas, but closer to Sacramento and the Bay Area. Saves us an hour each way, which is key for me because I am the driver and am usually tired from skiing all day. But the best thing about this place are the owners. Craig and Amber are wonderful hosts. They are friendly and generous and we could tell they genuinely wanted us have a comfortable stay. Last but not least, the price is right, especially compared to Tahoe hotels. read more

Tired from riding for days Craig and Amber were welcoming, so generous, and kind. Their hospitality is above reproach and the caliber of people they are is a rare find. We were nestled into chairs by the fire and given wine and a home-cooked meal topped off by a brilliant evening of conversation and laughter. What more could a traveler ask for? Well...There is so much more! It was reasonably priced, the beds are cool foam and you melt into them. The furnishings are new and of high quality and it all sits on a majestic and beautiful river with Yosemite-Esque rock outcroppings above and around you. This IS the place to stay. This place is a total gem! What had been a run down motel was thoughtfully renovated by the current owner, Craig. It's right on the North Fork of the American river. Rooms are very clean and comfortable at extremely reasonable rates.! There is a mini fridge, coffee maker and microwave in all rooms, which comes in handy because the closest food is around a half hour drive away, with the exception on a cafe next door that has coffee and pastries in the morning. There are fire pits with grills, picnic tables and has a swimmable area in the summer and fall. The owner Craig and his employees (Chris, Oscar and Carlos) are super friendly and accommodating. (see other review where stranded motorists were driven a half hour away to rent a car, by an employee) When you check in, you are offered a beer!!! I have never felt so welcomed checking in to a Motel. I have stayed there 6 times since I discovered this place 2 years ago. On 2 occasions, Craig offered guests food in the form a cookout, inviting anyone who wanted to join in the feast. Most people did. I ended up helping to make some of the food in addition to Oscar grilling chicken and making home made french fries in a pot on the open fire. I brought out my guitar as people joined in singing along which turned into a night of unexpected comradery with guests from all over the world. I ended up having one of the most enjoyable nights in recent memory...with complete strangers. Craig's warm a generous personality seems to set the vibe for all his employees as well as the other guests. I can confidently recommend this place as a destination or just an overnight on the way to where ever you might be going! I wish I could give it more than 5 stars! read more

The new inn owners, Craig and Amber, have given this place a huge makeover in a short period of time. They've renovated the rooms with new floors, bathrooms, beds, heaters, area A/C units, furniture, fixtures, and even entry doors. They also gave the exterior a nice, modern coat of paint. What's more is they are not done with their plans--they have a vision to really get Sierra Inn dialed in with some other amenities. Beyond the physical renovations what makes this place special is Craig and Amber's hospitality toward their guests, the regular bonfires when weather permits and is safe, and the sense of community among the owners and guests when they stay at Sierra Inn. The inn rests right on the American River, which has a steady flow of water owing to the relaxing sound of water over boulders as you sit by the river's edge sipping on your favorite beverage and/or barbequing in good company with family and friends. If you can brave the water temperature, a refreshing dip in the summer is also possible from the back of the property. Definitely recommend staying here for a relaxing time in Kyburz or Tahoe. Hard to complain about the price, $77 a night. We called ahead and made a reservation. When we arrived they were doing some landscaping and for me outside the property looked clean. We checked into our room. We had a king size bed which had a memory foam pad on top. Unfortunately the bed itself was very old and lumpy. When we turned the sheets down to get in there were what appeared to be ink stains. The room itself smelled musty. Television only got five channels, although there was a HBO listing.When I asked in the office, they said the owner was aware of it but hadn't replaced the television yet. One good thing was the hot water and the water pressure. Shower pan was stained.The towels in the bathrooms were clean. The Sierra Inn has great potential. I hope they can modernize the rooms so it is appealing place to stay. read more
