So again this is only our experience at the time of our dinner. I'll start with walking in through the door. Looks clean and inviting. It was a little busy for a Friday crowd. Didn't have to wait long at the door and the booth seat was pretty comfortable. Sat next to a window and it is a very lit up place. Service well wasn't like the first time we ate there. We sat down around 4 or 5pm. Now are waitresses could have been new but again this is at the time we sat down to when we left and I will say this. She was the only server besides the owners. She very seldom smiled, didn't come to the table at all and it was hard to get noticed from anyone for a drink refill. I did hear someone yell out for service but I'm not that way. Even the owners didn't look are way. So I'd say no service at all but noticed people at other tables got pretty good service that I was seeing by the owners. But again maybe just an off day in the area we sat in. Now the first time we were there, the food was delicious and the service was good. This time not so. Maybe a new cook as well don't know. But the food pictured was very bland meaning absolutely no flavor at all. For a taco salad and really tacos as well to have no flavor is not too good sad to say. We will go back one more time cause now the score is one to one. I'm a person in this day and age want my money's worth why? I work hard for my money! Prices are going up! Terrific service. My family has gone since the day they opened, before the renovation a few years back. So, I may be a bit biased as far as the taste of their dishes. I like the food, is is certainly more "new age" or "americanized" hispanic food. In all my twenty some years the nachos have always tasted the same. Yes, I will revise. Im certainly biased because I've been raised on this restaurants cuisine. By far my favorite mexican restaurant. The renovation makes the place look more modern than before and it feels less cramped than before. A part of me misses the old look just because it is nostalgic though. If you're passing through I recommend you give it a shot! The owners are lovely people and the food is far better in taste and price than the other restaurants in this area! read more

We started going again to the Sierra after a year's long hiatus because of the plague. We now go for dinner on a semi-regular basis, about once a month. We always look forward to it and are still exploring the menu, which is large and varied. Jorge and Maria and their family are great hosts, and we always seem to find a table even when the place is packed. I love the Salsa. Looking forward to our next meal! read more

The first red flag should've been that there was only three people eating at this place when we walked i. I'm not really certain where all these excellent reviews are coming from but it must be whoever works there and relatives. This was the worst Mexican food I've ever eaten in my entire life and I'm almost 57 years old. The meat from mine, and my sisters entrée tasted like it came out of a can and looked like it too. The fish tacos were ground up with something black! The food was inedible. We both took one bite and spit it out. When we asked the owner to take it off our bill, she literally started yelling and screaming at us that we insulted her , talk about unprofessional . My sister was afraid she was gonna beat us up. I've never witnessed such insane behavior from a business owner. I guess since it's the only restaurant in that town, she can get away with that disgusting food in my opinion, and my sister's opinion. we ran out of there for fear of our safety! read more

Sweet people, but the food was terrible. We got two carne asada burritos, they put the rice and beans on the side and the burrito was literally just stale carne asada pieces and pico de gallo. The pico de gallo was not good either; cut into odd sized pieces, so you would end up with huge chunks of onion. Because of COVID you can only take things to go, but they did not have any useful utensils. Just spoons. read more

Food: Two stars. Four for Lana's taco salad. Two each for Roger's chili verde with old, dry pork; tasteless chili relleno; greasy refried beans; and dry, tasteless Spanish rice. Drinks: Five Stars. Five for Lana's blended margarita and five for Roger's Cadillac made with Hornitos Reposado, which filled a large water glass and was worth every cent of its nine dollar price. Indeed, you'd pay substantially more for a margarita as good as Sierra's Cadillac at the best Mexican restaurant in downtown Salem (and, we believe, on the entire west coast); and you cannot buy the only other margarita we know of that is this good, because Roger makes it. Service: Three Stars. Service was pleasant and adequate. Ambience: Take your pick. A large, clean restaurant with a basic wood interior comprised of booths and tables, an eclectic mixture of cut glass light fixtures, misery whips (old two-man saws once used by tree fellers) and other unrelated artifacts from previous restaurants that once occupied the premises. I asked for a simple change, taco salad, hold the cheese and sour cream and please add onion/pepper like comes with a fajita. The cook said "no." Really? Then the server came back and said the cook would do it this one time but there'd be a charge - didn't know how much. The Sierra is the place to go for great Mexican food and super service. My favorite is Chile Rellanos. These are the best I have had in a restaurant. Salsa is homemade so the chips are hard to resist. They also cook American food. The fries are perfect. They do takeout. read more

Oh my yum. So good. Great service, friendly people, and after a few visits, you are considered a regular and usually get to sit at the same table. One of the waiters even remembers my order every time we go there. Go on Fridays for their delicious rib dinner. Saw decent reviews and stopped in. They took our order after a long wait, told me the burritos are "wet" however when it came mine didn't have traditional red sauce on it like a wet burrito at Super Torta. I ordered lettuce on the side and they forgot it. Brought me a pacifico instead of a dos xx that I ordered. All of this served with indifference. Chicken was pink, not sure if that was the sauce or salmonella. Hope this was a fluke because all of the reviews would lead one to think it's a great spot. read more

I hail from Tejas originally, so the idea of finding good Mexican food in the mountains of Oregon, seemed about as likely as that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. (No luck there...yet.) I had a sope with shredded beef and cheese enchilada. Both were excellent!!! Now, I get it, a cheese enchiladas seem like as no brainier, easy-peasy. I assure you, they are not, I've had plenty of bad ones, and I will mark this as my fav that I've had since moving to OR from CO. Great place to stop between the Portland area and Central Oregon and great prices! Right off of the highway. Shredded beef and chicken enchiladas were very good. This is exactly what you expect from a mexican restaurant. Not authentic but good food. Standard fair chips and salsa wich are always good here. Processed taco shells. Hamburger not shredded beef (tacos only) rice and beans not bad every other dish not bad . Good service clean place good people skills. Not authentic but good as I said before. We live a few miles west of Gates but do visit the Sierra Mexican Restaurant from time to time. It's pretty authentic and the owner often takes time to introduce himself and check in on your needs. We found that the dishes are not always the norm so you get used to what you like. I'm always in for the tacos and my husband likes the burritos. The plain meat burritos are a little watery so we alway make sure they have beans and cheese and then they are very tasty. read more
