Andrew Hall, the owner, and operator of The School of Light offered to teach me one-on-one during a weekend workshop to make sure I was fully prepared and confident for the advanced darkroom class. In a weekend, my world changed. I learned the art and mechanics of film photography, sharpened my perspectives for light and shadow, processed my own film, and developed my own prints. Nothing is quite as exciting as watching your photograph come to life, or as empowering as knowing you have full creative control in the darkroom. Low and behold, I was fully equipped for the advanced class - which was nothing short of magnificent. Andrew is incredibly friendly, passionate, patient, engaging, inspiring, a true artist with a wealth of expertise, and an exceptional instructor for your journey into the darkroom. I've since taken numerous classes at SoL and continue to expand my creativity into exotic and uncharted realms. The people who attend Andrew's workshops are just as friendly and likeminded as you. Everyone gets along and encourages each other; it's indeed a splendid place.

Since then I've been regularly developing film at home and making darkroom prints at SoL "print nights," where he opens up the darkroom to former students. More than just a well-equipped darkroom, Andrew's photographic experience is an incredible resource for Los Angeles photographers. Not only that, almost everyone I've met at print nights is equally passionate and excited about the creative process and makes the whole experience outstanding.

I came in for specific treatments and left with more damage and financial loss. 1. FAILED ROOT CANAL (Tooth #3): My insurance company refused to cover a crown for a root canal done AT THIS CLINIC because their review found the procedure was "inadequate and incomplete." Now, I have to pay for a retreatment on a tooth that was already weakened by their mistake. 2. MISDIAGNOSIS & WRONG EXTRACTION (Tooth #20 vs #19): I specifically went in to have a filling on Tooth #20 checked. I even paid $50 out-of-pocket for a 3D Scan for each tooth to ensure accuracy. Despite these advanced images and the extra cost, the student doctor dismissed my concerns, claimed #20 was "healthy," and told me the pain was coming from Tooth #19. Based on this, I had #19 extracted. The pain didn't stop. I later discovered ON MY OWN that the filling on #20 was loose and moving. They had the 3D scans, they took my money, and they still missed an obvious problem. Because of their misdiagnosis, I lost a tooth (19) and left the actual problem (20) untreated for weeks, risking another root canal. While I have had professional student doctors here in the past (like Dr. Fukawa and Dr. Perez), the current level of care and diagnosis is DANGEROUS. Students are learning, but there seems to be a serious lack of oversight when it comes to critical decisions. If you value your teeth and your time, make sure you get a second opinion before letting them drill or pull anything.

I'm not sure why the rating is so low for the USC Faculty Practice. I've been getting my dental…read moreneeds addressed here for about two decades, and I've been completely satisfied. I started seeing the USC Faculty Practice when I worked at USC for a year, and even though it's been nearly twenty years since I've left that job, I'm still going there. The only outside dental insurance they accept is Delta Dental, but that's what nearly everyone has. Since the dentists' primary income is as university professors, they don't feel the need to upcharge or recommend unnecessary procedures to keep the money coming in. It's great to go to the dentist and get the care that I need without upselling; taking care of one's teeth shouldn't feel like buying a car. And I've had multiple experiences at the USC Faculty Practice where I the dentists and hygienists have worked with me to provide me with a solution for my needs that work with my insurance (translation: won't cost me extra money) where, had I been at a private practice dentist, I would have ended up paying hundreds or thousands of dollars out of pocket. Many of my friends have dentist horror stories and hate going to the dentist -- and I have a few of those from my pre-USC Faculty Practice days. But now that I keep my regular biannual schedule of cleanings and check-ups here, I've had no dental issues for many years. I wouldn't go anywhere else for my dental needs.

One of the worst experiences I've ever had was at a dentist's office when I got a root canal. I was…read morealready nervous before the appointment, but I trusted that everything would go smoothly. Unfortunately, that was not the case. During the procedure, I felt uncomfortable and noticed that something did not seem right. Even after telling the dentist that I was feeling pain, the procedure continued, and I left the office feeling worse than when I arrived. Over the next few days, the pain became more intense instead of improving. My tooth was extremely sensitive, my gums felt swollen, and it became difficult to eat or even focus on daily activities. I kept hoping the discomfort would go away, but it only got worse. When I returned to the office to explain what was happening, I felt like my concerns were not taken seriously. Eventually, I had to visit another dentist for a second opinion, and I learned that the root canal had not been completed properly. Hearing that was frustrating because I had already spent so much time, money, and energy trying to fix the problem. The entire experience left me feeling disappointed and stressed. Instead of relieving my pain, the procedure created even more problems and caused weeks of discomfort. It taught me the importance of asking questions, getting second opinions when something feels wrong, and choosing healthcare professionals carefully. To this day, that root canal remains one of the most unpleasant experiences I have ever gone through because it turned what should have been a simple treatment into a long and painful ordeal.

You'll actually feel like an artist here, rather than being taught to "hit certain beats" (a technique other studios rely on, which makes auditions feel transactional and totally un-creative). Because of the depth of exploration and conversation in scene study, you'll actually get to know your classmates, which creates community. The level of conversation and self-reflection during class is high. And perhaps most importantly, I feel grateful to have met good friends here. This is a fantastic space for artistry, self-discovery, and vulnerability!
