I was a lost sheep when I arrived in DC. I didn't know anyone, but distant relatives, my car was still parked in CA and to make matters worse, when I smiled at people while walking, they looked at me as if I were crazy. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. This is the most unprofessional salon I've ever been to. The owner, Vonetta, is pushy and inconsiderate, and cares nothing about her clients other than for every red cent she can weasel out of them. She skipped my consultation for an install on my first visit and I ended up with bundles of hair the wrong color and couldn't get my hair done at all. My hair was so damaged, I was completely humiliated and spent over $200 for it. On my second visit, my stylist was an hour and a half late. And the owner had brought her pet dog to the salon who leapt up into my lap every five minutes, sometimes at the risk of being burnt by the hair straightener being used on my head. On my third appointment, the stylist never showed up at all. She called to say that she'd completely forgotten about my appointment and offered to reschedule for later that evening. I'd already driven an hour and a half for this appointment, paid for parking in DC and the whole 9 yards. I agreed to meet up with her later, and to my absolute dismay she completely stood me up with no call or text message. I had waited for her at this point for roughly six hours. Today was my first time visiting Signature Image Salon as I rarely go to the salon. I was going out of town and my usual stylist changed her work schedule, so I found the salon from naturallycurly.com, as I have natural hair; however, today I went in to get my hair straightened. As soon as I arrived, I was greeted by a warm and friendly employee who took my coat and showed me to the styling area, and she proceeded to give me a great wash and condition - I believe her name is Odonna. Since I wear my hair in its natural state 95% of the time, preserving my curl pattern is important to me. I noticed that they did not use extremely high heat on my hair and applied nice products that did not weigh my hair down. Vonetta Dumas styled me and she was wonderful. She gave me a much needed trim and spoke with me about maintaining my ends. Needless to say, my hair came out fantastic and I received many compliments shortly thereafter. Let me start by saying I always try to lift up African American businesses so it kills me to write this review. However, the truth must set people free from taking a chance on this place, or at the very least, the stylist, Cierra. I went here some years ago to a stylist I think left the business and kept receiving emails with 20% off coupons and notices of stylist openings. Despite my hesitation with going to a business that needs to cajole people to come to them, I needed my hair colored so badly - I looked on Yelp and decided that Cierra had enough decent reviews that I should risk trying her out. BIG MISTAKE. First indication of a problem - there was no swatch book to look for color - I was given a magazine to look for something I would like. Not helpful. Then, when she finally got to me a half hour after my appointment time, there was little to no consultation. I made an appointment for a cut and color, she went straight into talking to me about my color without asking me what I was looking for in a haircut. To say she had no idea what she was doing is a significant understatement. I told her I wanted a dark red color - auburn - and even found a picture of someone online who had the hair color I wanted. She then said we would need to do a double process, which would cost $85 x 2 because I had highlights. I told her I didn't have highlights, my hair was colored using a single process where my stylist would mix dark brown and red together to get my color. The only reason my hair looked like it had highlights was as a result of the keratin treatment I had in January (yet another mistake, shouldn't you ask what services I had performed on my hair in the last 3 months? Horrible consultation!) So, thinking she must know what she is doing because this is an Aveda salon, she puts this red on my hair, barely dries it, and then coats it over with another color for the second process. She leaves it on too long and then when she rinses it out she says "How do you like your hair color?" I respond, "It looks really dark, but it's wet, how can I possibly know what it will look like?" She shrugs. Then, I remind her that I need a trim as well. I tell her very clearly that I am trying to grow out an asymmetrical haircut, so all I need done is to even out the sides and trim all around. The only other thing I ask for is long layers to frame my face. Now, why on earth would that indicate to you as a stylist that I wanted the back of my hair layered? So, the end result is that I left the salon with jet black hair with layers in the back that gives me the appearance of a shaggy dog. I get into my boyfriend's car and he says, "wow, your hair is so dark! And I didn't know you wanted to go short in the back?" I burst into tears. Thanks, Signature Image. The second star is only for the owner's dog, who was sweet. Cierra fully deserves a 1. She said she was an Aveda school graduate. I have been trying to find someone who could give me a slightly edgy but still professional style. I found it today. Linda is amazing. She recommended an angled bob. She cut my hair wet and then dried it and cut some more to give a very precise cut with sculpted layers and perfect angles. Her cut is absolutely beautiful. Beware of excessive unaccounted charges! I was charged $180 for flat twists and a trim! On my bill it was listed as a sculpting cut, which I did not receive. They claimed their prices went up despite what is listed on their website. Mind you, I had an appointment in December it was $100 for deep conditioning, trim, and style. I went ahead a paid because I had spent close to 4 hrs there despite having a 12:15 appointment. I have reached out to my bank to dispute the charges and will also be contacting the Better Business Bureau to report this business and will exhaust all legal options at my disposal. I was immediately greeted and received a consultation. During that time I was served hot tea. It was a great experience. It is clean and a very relaxing space. I went in expecting to pay at least a couple hundred dollars for the amount and quality of services rendered but was pleasantly surprised at how incredibly affordable the final cost was! I immediately booked my next appointment for color and a trim. I've already been giving out the name of the salon and stylist every chance I get, so taken am I by the quality of the whole experience. I was greeted quickly and immediately shown to a chair even though I arrived a little early. Cierra really took her time with my cut and style, making sure every step of the way that I was happy with the direction she was taking it (I cut off nearly a foot of length.) I got a quality blow dry and press (most stylists really half-ass this part of my service; this was the first time I've ever NOT had to go home and immediately redo the press.) This is a long overdue review from a visit a year ago. I am a 4c natural who loved this place the first time I visited and another stylist (not Vonetta) did my hair. I had told her I wanted to relax my hair and she did a good job of educating me on how to achieve better(softer) results without using chemicals. Fast forward my next visit a few months later. The stylist I liked was not there and Vonetta gave me a consult - I end up with not only relaxed but overly processed and damaged hair. She chose to flat iron another client while asking the junior stylist who helped with cleaning the salon to relax my virgin hair! She started off applying relaxer to my temples and the tips of my hair! Even the least hair savvy know that's a non-no. I ended up having to guide her through the rest of the process. Cierra was friendly, although not very knowledgable on all of the current natural hair discourse (shingling, silicones, sulfates) and very helpful. She let me read all of the labels and decide which products I would prefer on my hair. She also let me assess if we needed more product at the end of the application, which I felt was a nice touch. Pros: timely, friendly staff, helpful, cute hair. Cons: A little rough with the detangle brush (I usually use a comb and work through smaller sections gently). This is my first Yelp review, so just take that however you'd like. Some background information to put this review in context: I'm "natural" (I don't have a relaxer in my hair) with super curly, type 4aish hair. Collarbone length in the front, almost armpit length in the back. Super thick. I'm a college student in DC and usually wait until I go back home to get my hair done. However, I was feeling extremely lazy this week and didn't feel like having to detangle and style my hair. I researched a bunch of salons and decided to go ahead and try this one after reading the positive reviews. I scheduled an appointment online with Vonetta for two strand twists (this is how I generally style my hair). She called me a couple of days later and told me that that wasn't her specialty, so she referred me to Cierra instead for an appointment an hour and fifteen minutes later. I appreciated her honesty with that. Now on to the actual appointment: The salon itself is nice. It's clean and is much bigger on the inside than I expected. I waited about ten minutes in the entrance area before someone took me back to where my stylist was. She got to me about ten minutes later. She asked me what kind of twists I wanted, if I had a picture, etc. She was also clear about the price of my style as well as the price of the deep-conditioning treatment I selected. I was shampoo-ed and deep-conditioned with Aveda products, which was very nice. They're really the major reasons for the stars that were given. I sat under a steamer with my deep conditioner for a while, before being rinsed and taken back to the styling area. Someone sectioned my hair for Cierra before putting on a plastic cap to keep my hair wet and ready for twisting. Cierra got to me about fifteen minutes later. She asked me what size twists I wanted (again, I appreciated her willingness to ask), and I told her that it didn't really matter - medium was fine. Now as a I mentioned before, the reason that I chose not to do my hair myself was that I was feeling lazy and didn't feel like detangling. However, I wish I had just taken the time to do it myself. She was not very gentle with my hair. In fact, when I was running my hands through the twists the next day I was pulling out balls of hair from the ends. She didn't truly detangle my hair; there were still knots that I found at the end of the twists that she had just twisted around each other. I don't really know how else to describe it. More on that, later. My hair was finished four and a half hours from the time of my appointment. The final product was okay, I liked it, but it was nothing that I couldn't have done myself at home (especially considering the hefty price tag associated with two strand twists here). In fact, when I got home and saw how the ends looked, I realized I actually prefer the look when I do it myself. The next day, I ended up taking the twists down as I realized the hair wasn't really detangled and would end up matting if I left them in. As I took them down, more balls of hair came out, some with long strands that had just been ripped through. This was when I knew I had to write a review. So overall, the salon was nice and the staff was friendly but I just can't reconcile that with the way my hair turned out. Let me start by saying I never had the pleasure of stepping into this salon because the receptionist/front desk were so incompetent and functionally lacking I cancelled my appointment. I have been to Vonetta, the salon owner when she was at a previous shop and she was good. I only called to schedule an appointment with Vonetta at Signature because my regular stylist was unavailable and I begrudgingly decided to call Signature up. I have a sister who comes to Signature when our regular stylist is unavailable as well. Apparently the Signature receptionist couldn't reconcile this fact with reality as she kept asking me several times if I had been there before and if I was my sister. ::SIGH:: When I originally called I had to repeatedly spell my first and last name because the receptionist may be illiterate. (We need to get America literate again people!) Taking the bar exam was less stressful than trying to make an appointment. When the seas parted and the miracle finally did happen they called my SISTER to confirm my appointment the day before. Sent my SISTER the confirmation emails and then claimed that they had a bad or disconnected number for me. Yet still referred to my SISTER as the one with the appointment. When I called to straighten up the mix-up I simultaneously received an email confirming my hair appointment for a DIFFERENT DAY AND TIME. This was the last straw. I called my regular stylist up who thankfully happened to be available and cancelled at Signature. When I tried to cancel the appointment for the 2 different days they made for me, it was more of the same inadequacies. When I play office with my 8 year old cousins they always get the date and time right with correct confirmation phone calls. GET IT TOGETHER. read more
