I really love this salon. The owner and groomers are always friendly and flexible. Their prices are also reasonable. I have three small, short-haired dogs. They get the full shampoo/conditioner/nail trim service. My dogs always smell great, and their nails are in check without any nicks. The owner and employees have very calm, loving demeanors. My foster dog is quite afraid of men, but she feels safe with each Silver Dogs employee. This reflects in how calm my dogs are when I pick them up. I highly recommend this local business. read more

Rafal took The time to explain how to care my dogs hair & the right brush to use on my dog. He is skilled & knowledgeable! He was referred by a woman in The Development where I live. Her dogs always look great & now mine does too! The place is very clean. It seems that he does one dog at a time. The dogs are crated separately. No cage drying, TG! His prices can't be beat! My little puppy who is 15 years old this year does not get along with any other humans other than his immediate family, but Rafal and his wife are the exception. I brought my dog to Silver Dog Grooming for the first time today. They did such a WONDERFUL, EXCELLENT job! My dog Simon is a rescue who was so thin when we rescued him. I'd taken Simon to a big box dog grooming salon and they couldn't fully groom him as he was scared, reactive and full of anxiety. Rafael welcomed Simon in a calm, loving manner. We were very hopeful about this groomer based solely on Yelp reviews. We recently moved to the area and needed a groomer for our 8 month old Cavapoo. The end result was a fine haircut; nothing to write home about, but also not the worst haircut he's ever had. He did, however, fail to trim his nails. The worst part of the experience is that he contracted Giardia from this location. I feel bad about writing a bad review because the owner did get us in last minute for an appointment, which was much appreciated. But the last thing you expect when you drop your dog off at the groomer is to put their health in jeopardy. So not only did we pay $60+ dollars for a haircut, we also have a $125+ vet bill to cover as well. At least the vet trimmed his nails for us... read more

We had a nasty experience here. We had just gotten a new puppy, she's really fluffy and has a thick coat in general. I admit she had some knots here and there, but they could be easily combed out. When we brought her in, the man took one look at her, and reprimanded us. Questions like; "Why would you even get this dog?", were asked, very unprofessional and rude. Just to clarify, we've been coming here for years with our other dog, so this was out of the blue. Very poor service. The first time I went there, they cut my dog. He was bleeding. I asked and they say it was nothing. They didn't even apologize for that. I had tu put a band aid to the dog but he pulled away the band aid. He started liking. Got infected. Long story short had to take to the vet and was 187 dollars. Made a mistake to take them again and the owner didn't want to give the service. He said one of my dogs have some matts and he refused. I asked why you have a groomer shop if you don't want to give the service?? It doesn't make sense! These people just want the easy way They don't care about pets. read more

I'll admit - I was a bit nervous to take my dog to a new place to get groomed, despite the 5-star reviews. The owner, over the phone, scheduled a time for me to drop our dog off and didn't ask too many questions - but said everything sounded good and we'd discuss the day of (and we did). Absolutely awful. Went to just get a nail trim for my lab, who is an absolute dream except for trimming nails, then she gets very scared. Never bites, just runs away. The tech wasn't nice, looked scared of my dog, no treats or calming atmosphere. He gave me a muzzle to put on her and wanted me to strong hold her while he did it. Drove straight to the vet to have them help me with her nails because we were both traumatized. No one should ever go here. read more

They treat her as though she is one of their dogs, and they always do such an amazing job on her grooming. Extremely disappointed with this groomer. Every time I ask them for a specific cut, it was never executed. I do not think they have experience cutting certain breeds. They do not have photos of how they cut their dogs, which I believe is important for a grooming business. My last groomer moved and I was in need of a new one. I came across them through a friend and was disappointed. If you want your dog just bathed and cut and you do not care how they look then I recommend taking your dog here, but if you care for your dog on how they are treated and how they should look, then you should NOT take them here. I asked them to trim my dog and they decided to basically shave her. When I asked why it was so short, they said it looked better. I was so traumatized. They did not meet the owner's expectations. I will never recommend them or take my dogs here ever again. read more

I brought our lab for a nail clipping 2 weeks ago. It was fine. I had noticed that for an additional $4 I could have her nails ground with a dremel-like tool but decided I would think about it. Today I brought her in for the grinding ad they charged me the full $15 because I did not ask for grinding the day I had her nails clipped. Poor practice on their part as they offer a $10 discount for new customers and I was new. This was not offered to me from the get go. I will not go back! read more

READ THIS REVIEW PLEASE!!!! It's been I think almost 3 months since I took my dog to this place. I noticed his tail was patchy and I thought it was because they shaved his hair too short. (The haircut was bad too.. some areas had longer hair than others). So I didn't pay any mind and thought his hair would grow back eventually. Fast forward 3 months later and I noticed his tail hair from the area still hasn't grown. I asked my older sister what was wrong with it. (keep in mind I'm 13) she told it looked like they cut his actual tail!!!!!! oh my good imagine the pain my dog went through. Poor baby!!!:( please don't bring your dog here!!!!!!! My dogs have been getting groomed by Silver dog grooming for a decade. I have always appreciated how loving and attentive they are to my pets. It is not easy handing ones dogs over to others, but I have always felt that my dogs are safe and well cared for. My dogs are a bit nervous when I put them in the car, but when I go to pick them up they are excited, look amazing, and smell clean. I appreciate that the dogs are separated from one another. My older dog can be a bit assertive and my other dog weighs less than 5 Ibs. It is comforting to know that Rafael insures their safety and manages all of his dog clients with care. My relationship with the owners is real and personable. This is a family owned business and they work really hard to ensure that my dogs and I are happy. I prefer a personal relationship for the well-fair of my dogs vs a cattle call type business where groomers come and go and dogs run free and out of control. Knowing that my dogs are in good hands is the best feeling. We appreciate all their years of service. read more

Been a time since I took my shin tzu for a professional groom. Didn't have much luck for a long time and kinda gave up based on most services in Grayslake. We even half figured how to groom her ourself, but she never got that salon quality look to her coat and face. After driving by silver dog everyday for many years, I figured I would use the 5 star rating here on yelp and give them a try. I was able to make a next day appointment as soon as I called. Unfortunately on my end, I had to cancel same day, do to complications on my end. When I called to cancel then reschedule, the male owner was very accommodating and was able to give me a great new time, the following day. When my brought my dog in, he wanted to see if I had any special requirements for her coat length. Her face and tail needed the most work from Matts. He was very kind and professional and gave me a great window of time of when he would be finished. He was done in that time window, and my shih tzu was glowing when I picked her up. She's an older dog, 11 years, and she looked liked a puppy. Very soft and fluffy, with a great face trim and her tail no longer matted. I was given a first time customer discount of $10, which was more than generous of the owners. No more do it at Home grooms, I'm bringing my dog back here for a great look! read more

Silver Dog grooming is now located in Grayslake and they are horrible! I took our dog there for the first and last time. They run the salon out of their garage and that is okay. But when I have an appointment at 8am and I am waiting in your drive way for 10 min until they open their doors I think that is horrible business. The owner came outside in his sweat pants and ripped tshirt and was very condescending. Our dog was the only dog in the salon and she was put in a cage with her leash hanging out like she was a vishious animal ready to attach at any moment. He on the other hand was on his computer checking facebook and not paying attention to her. When we got her home i checked her nails to find them very sharp and all of her nails were split up the middle. I had to spend more money and get her nails fixed the next day. read more

I've brought my dog here for almost 2 years. Really happy with the service. The groomers are both very nice and welcoming. The salon is in their garage but very clean and modern looking. My dog only needs a bath and nails clipped- so those are the only services I have experienced. Love the way my dog comes home smelling so clean and looking so fluffy. read more

I just called to make an appointment for my dog. A man answered and said he's closed today (Monday) but there's availability tomorrow. He asked about my dog, and I said he's a 50 lb short haired pit bull. He asked if my dog is good around other dogs and I said yes, but he's a bit shy, and if a dog barks at him he might turn around and cry a little. The man then told me that I would have to stay during the grooming, "for his safety." This man works with dogs and somehow is not educated about dog behavior?? My ten month old puppy had an 8:30 appointment at Silver Dog. When I took him in Rafal felt his shaggy fur and said he had some matting which meant he would have to shave the dog down completely and would take more time. He quoted me sixty dollars which was a little over what I had budgeted. When I asked him about his ten dollar first client discount he agreed to give it to me. That's when it went down hill. He proceeded a fifteen minute barrage of excuses on why he shouldn't groom our pup. He placed the clippers on my dogs leg and when the dog pulled his leg away he said " see this dog is going to move too much, I could cut his eye out or cut him deep on his skin. My clippers are really sharp." He is just too matted I think I will torture him. I just can't. It's too risky. at which point he said he would not cut him today and that was it. Once I was denied by Silver Dog I immediately drove to Round Lake Beach to Dog Gone Clean. The owner got down on the floor and played with my puppy, she commented that he would need to be shaved down due to the matting but didn't bat an eye about it. The owner said she had a cancellation that afternoon and could fit him in, no problem. I was quoted fifty dollars. Hours later I got a call back to pick up my pup who was shaved beautifully and smelled great. Highly recommended!!! In my experience these two groomers were like night and day. If you want an experienced groomer who is very good on price, go to Dog Gone Clean. I really feel that Silver Dog just wanted the dollar amount he wanted and when I asked about his ten dollar coupon he was miffed. I live in Grayslake I wanted to support a local business and would have for years to come so those ten dollars cost him a future regular customer. With all the excuses he was making you would think he has no experience with puppies nor dogs with a little matting.Now I just drive by Silver Dog and it bugs me every time. It wasn't about the dog for him, it was all about the money. read more
