Such an Amazing park in Oregon and certainly worth visiting. We hiked to all 10 waterfalls and it was such a great time. If looking to make a day of it, be sure to pack plenty of water and wear comfortable hiking type shoes as there are some rocky paths and many areas with a decent grade and it can be challenging for some including myself but well worth it.
Absolutely incredible! we have been to national and state parks all over the country and this was one of our favorites. You have lush greenery, big trees, and awesome waterfalls. On top of that, the trails are very well maintained, wide and easy to navigate. There are various hikes you can go on and see up to 10 waterfalls. We went on the 5 mile loop where we saw seven waterfalls and it was truly amazing. it wasn't very strenuous and I made it with a bad knee. There were moments of lots of stairs though. We stayed at Smith Creek Village and got entrance to the park with our accomodations. It is worth your time!
August 25, 2025, Silver Falls State Park, Oregon We were excited to return to Silver Falls State Park, this time with our new puppy along. Since pets aren't allowed on the Canyon Trail, we had to skip the famous Trail of Ten Falls. I've hiked it before, and it's truly unforgettable--the chance to walk behind a waterfall feels magical. I'll admit I was a little bummed to miss it this trip, but traveling with a pup shifts your priorities, and her needs came first. The good news is that leashed pets are welcome on other trails, so we still got to enjoy the park together. We chose the North Rim Trail and the Upper North Falls Trail--shorter hikes, but both offered that incredible waterfall payoff. The North Rim Trail leads to an overlook of North Falls, and the Upper North Falls Trail take you directly to the Upper North Falls themselves. It was the perfect way to introduce our puppy to hiking while still soaking in some of the park's beauty. A quick note on parking: the North Falls Trailhead has limited spaces and only accepts cash ($10/day or $12/non-resident). We didn't have cash, so we drove to the South Falls District lot to buy a pass at the card machine. Thankfully, spaces were still available when we returned. Later we realized there's also a card-payment machine at the North Canyon District lot, which would have been much more convenient. Silver Falls really is a gem. Even if you can't do the full Trail of Ten Falls, the park's beauty is everywhere--absolutely worth a visit.
Such a beautiful state park! The hike isn't tooo bad, but I'm not saying it's tooo easy either lol. My group and I took breaks often so we finished our hike within 5 hours (...and about 20k steps in later for that entire journey). On average, the entire experience should last about 4 hours. Lots of waterfalls to walk behind and around--I had a few favorites and I remember just taking every moment in, especially for that one waterfall with a deeper cave and relaxing area behind it. Overall, if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of Portland for a half a day, you won't regret coming to Silver Falls.
Silver Falls State Park, in the town of Sublimity, is about an hour and a half drive from Portland. The drive is beautiful, quaint, and scenic. The directions took us to a parking lot and we realized we needed a parking pass. In this particular lot, the machine was cash only. We resigned ourselves to just visiting what we could without a pass. We drove up to a few viewing points when we found another huge parking area (a couple miles from the first) with parking pass machines that took cards! The out-of-state pass was $12 for the day. Thank goodness! I was ready to head back to town to get cash from somewhere. We got the pass and parked in the first lot. At this point we had no cell service at all. We couldn't find the trail map, we couldn't access Google maps, it was like we were back in 1990. So we winged it. We walked along a path and asked people where we were headed along the way. We made our way to a beautiful waterfall. We treked over some rocks and were rewarded with beautiful scenes. Once we took a million pictures and selfies, we turned back and went back to where we started. We asked another person about the falls and he advised that he was confused and the signage was confusing. So we picked a path and went. We walked for a while before we heard cars. We didn't see any big falls, but the trees were breathtaking, the mist and light rain gave enchanted forest. It was like a fairytale (not remotely like anything about trolls). Eventually, we did make our way to a magnificent waterfall. We climbed the steps and took the trail to the cave and were met with the most awe-inspiring views from behind the fall. Everything about that moment-the air, the flora, the sounds of the water, the gasps under my breathe. It's incredible how nature can evoke so much emotion. We took in everything we could while in the cave. After several minutes, we decided to head back. I think we cleared the paths for the signs we saw. We didn't see all the falls or walk all l the eight miles of available trails, but what we saw was incredible. Pro Tips: since we don't exactly have these kind of trails in and around South and Central Texas, I recommend a good pair of hiking shoes- the terrain is rocky, wet, muddy, and sometimes slippery; light layered clothes-it can be chilly and misty ;and a raincoat or poncho -we had light rain during our hike.
We fly into Seattle. We went to Mt. Rainer. Then to Silver Falls. We went to Crater Lake, Redwood, Yosemite, and Sequoia National Parks. Silver Falls was by far the smallest. Don't let that fool you. You'll enjoy every minute in the Park. Here's a secret. If you drive down another .5 mile then you'll save about that amount of time going to the Fall. The .8 that you walk is winding a just a little steep.
I have been to Silver Falls state park more than 15 times and always have a new experience. If you go and you're able to I would definitely recommend hiking the full trail of 10 falls. It's nothing short of breathtaking. Today while I was there only a small portion of the loop is open after the most recent storm. It's still worth a trip. Today I got to witness the first snowfall of the year.
Silver Falls is beautiful for sure and allows you to walk behind a waterfall. The only negative as someone who has been to a lot of state and national parks is the lack of signage. Only one of the waterfalls actually had a name near it and the two maps we came across along the trails didn't mark where you were so we had to backtrack a mile or more because things weren't labeled. We definitely got our workout in for the week.
My friend invited me to come hike in Portland to see ten waterfalls along the way and I obliged. The hike was not difficult and the scenery was breathtaking. Every waterfall was unique and beautiful. I thoroughly enjoyed this hike and look forward to doing it again in the summer out spring. The colors on the leaves were vibrant and fabulous. I recommend this for all you outdoors people.
Oregon is known for their waterfalls, but even for this area it is pretty unbelievable to find a hiking trail that features ten waterfalls not to mention several you can walk behind. If you are on your way to Silver Falls State Park you are likely hiking the Trail of Ten Falls so here is my guide for the very best route. Start by parking at North Falls Trailhead. Hit Upper North Falls so you can whet your waterfall appetite. Then take the rim trail toward South Falls. This way you get the long, mostly waterfall-free portion of the hike over with. Which isn't to say that it's not nice, it meanders through old growth forests and features some seriously massive trees. Break it up halfway with a quick jaunt down to Winter Falls. Then when you reach the South Falls district, take advantage of the picnic tables (and even some grills) scattered about and have a nice little snack or meal. The nature shop there was pretty cute and I snagged a silly tee with a "I'm lichen Silver Falls State Park" graphic as well as a couple Ranger chocolate bars. There was also a cafe or restaurant of some sort, though it was not open on our visit so just confirm beforehand if you're planning on that for your source of food as I bet you'll be hungry. After you've had a nice little rest, start at South Falls, then you'll be trekking along Canyon trail for the remainder of your hike. In this manner, you have saved the glorious section of the hike which most heavily features waterfalls for the end. You'll be so blown away by all the beauty you won't even think to feel tired! You also leave, in my opinion, the best waterfall for last. Thundering North Falls is nothing less than magnificent, demanding a pause every couple feet for a new photo as she shines in every new angle and view. On our late March visit the trail was surrounded by wildflowers of all sorts: fuschia salmonberry blossoms, vibrant skunk cabbage, nodding ladies, pastel Milkmaids, and the dearest of all, trillium. There was plenty of parking at the South Falls Day Use Area, and open parking at the North Falls Trailhead, though very limited there. If you plan to take the route outlined above, I'd make sure and arrive early on a weekday. If you are hiking on a weekend, I'd opt for the ease of parking at South Falls and then taking the trail clockwise, though there really is no wrong way to go. Do make sure you visit early in the spring to make the most of the falls, though it's a lovely hike no matter what. Beyond the hike, there is camping available, including cabins, plenty of day use areas, and you can easily drive to several waterfalls in a car. There are other hikes as well. Just go!

Gnaw-howdy, folks! Let me tell you about the absolute crown jewel of the entire forest: the Trail of Ten Waterfalls loop at Silver Falls. I tackled the whole dadgum 7.2-mile circuit on a day so gorgeous the sun felt like a warm rock on a soggy pelt. If you are a connoisseur of fine water engineering like yours truly, this place is pure, unadulterated heaven. Ten waterfalls. Ten! And humans just let all that pristine, rushing current flow freely without a single lodge or dam blocking it! It's wildly irresponsible from a construction standpoint, but sweet mother of willow bark, is it breathtaking. The best part? Trudging underneath those massive basalt cliffs at South Falls and North Falls. Feeling the thunder of the water vibrating right through my webbed feet was a spiritual experience. The mist keeps the ferns lush and the air tasting crisp and clean. Final Verdict: 5 out of 5 peeled willow sticks. If you have webbed feet, boots, or just a deep appreciation for top-notch hydrology, you need to hike this loop immediately. Just try to ignore the urge to build a giant wall across the river. It's hard, but the views are worth it. read more
If you're gonna do the Trail of 10 Falls (or 8 as it was recently due to northside trail closure), I recommend a counter-clockwise route starting at South Falls to avoid crowds and work your way up the magnificence scale. Also helps to get there early as you can. Trails were wet from recent showers but well-maintained and not slick. If it's really been raining and the falls are pumping, be prepared for standing water behind a couple of the falls. (Luckily someone had put out small stones to balance on, but from the looks of their wet shoes many people were unlucky in their attempts to cross.) Walking sticks can be helpful in the steeper grades. It now costs $10 to park unless you've got an annual pass read more
Daily parking permits are $10 per day, per vehicle for Oregon residents, and $12 per day otherwise. There are machines that sell the permits at the parking lots, so it's a pretty straightforward process. I went when there was a lot of rainfall, and so there was actually an emergency trail closure that spanned the majority of the park. Fortunately, the Canyon trail between the South Falls and the Lower South Falls was still open, and so I hiked that trail. It was absolutely amazing!! The falls were roaring and the creek was almost overflowing. The hike began with dark clouds and rain. As the trail led down and behind South Falls, the spray from the falls was heavier than the rain, soaking you from head to toe. The path then hugs the creek, which threatened to take over the trail at some points. There's a flight of stairs right before the Lower Falls, and at this point you can hear the thundering crash of the falls. As you go behind the falls, a shroud of darkness envelops you and you realize that suddenly you're fording through ankle deep water. With the loss of sight comes with the deafening noise of the tumbling water, and the spray attacks you every which way. Stumbling through, you emerge and find that the rain has stopped. As you crest up the path, the sun breaks, filtering through the trees with only the silence of the forest, punctuated with the occasional plop-plops of the trees shedding the water drops of the earlier rain. The silence is almost deafening. Good thing that the trail takes you right to the Lodge, which has a roaring fire inside to dry yourself with! There are also cool nature exhibits inside, as well as a small cafe to get drinks to warm yourself from the inside too. I would come here again, rain or shine! read more

We came for the Birding and Wildflower Festival for Mother's Day weekend. Parking wasn't too difficult around 11am and there were plenty of picnic tables to enjoy lunch in the beautiful weather! I was pleasantly surprised how clean and accessible the restrooms are throughout the park at the head of various trails. The North Rim trail was dog-friendly and perfect little pockets of nature playgrounds for my toddler. The South Falls is where the main big parking and all the activities were. What a nice spot for either a low-key nature walk or a longer hike to the beautiful waterfalls! read more
The 10 Falls Trail at Silver Falls State Park is an 8.7-mile loop that takes you on a journey through diverse forest landscapes and to many waterfalls--10 in total. What makes this trail so special is how close you can get to the falls. Several of them allow you to walk behind the cascading water. South Falls, the most iconic of the ten, stands at 177 feet. The trail is well-maintained, offering a mix of terrain that ranges from easy to moderately challenging. It's a perfect all-day adventure that's both kid- and dog-friendly. Bring sturdy shoes, as some sections can get muddy or slippery, especially near the falls. Also, be prepared for some crowds on weekends. read more

Being able to walk behind a waterfall is truly epic -- and this one doesn't disappoint. In just a short hike, you can stand in awe of its stunning beauty, feel the mist on your face, and hear the thunderous rush of water all around you. It's one of those incredible natural experiences that simply must be seen in person. read more
Great state park. Plenty of parking. Nice water falls. We were limited in time, but did do about an hour round trip from the south falls area. Some of the area is paved. You will need to come up stairs on the way back. They have pretty clean bathrooms at the start of the hike. There's also a cute store. If you live in Oregon, it is $35 for the annual state park pass read more

We stopped by here on our drive to the coast from Portland. The place is not too crowded and has a large parking lot. We didn't do the long hike to the 10 falls, but we did the shorter one up to the South Falls, which was pretty incredible. While the South Falls are great to watch from the side and front, the trail takes you right behind the falls, and the view from behind the falls is magical. I spent a good 15-20 minutes just standing behind the falls and soaking in the scenery and the serenity of the views. This is a must visit, if you are in the area. read more

This state park in Oregon cannot be missed! * 1 day 1 state park 1 hike 10 waterfalls * The Trail of 10 Falls is a must see in Oregon! * Spring is the best time to go when all waterfalls are full. The 7.4 loop trail is a moderately challenging hike that takes an average of 3.5 hrs to complete. 4 of which you can walk behind. It's a very popular area for hiking, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. Even with its length, it's a doable hike for anyone and the best thing is you can always take a break or go back. Most of these falls have their own parking lot where you can access with a short hike. Others have options that allow you to do portions of the loop trail. * Which one these falls excites you the most? read more
I took a trip to Oregon & visited this beautiful park. For starters, I love that it wasn't busy. My husband and I visited on a Friday afternoon around 1pm. There was plenty of parking & there was a $5 parking fee to explore the park, which was perfect. I love that they have an onsite cafe to buy coffee/drinks/food/snacks too. There are plenty of picnic tables on site as well. The trails are pretty easy depending on how active you are. There is a total of 10 trails & we did a short loop & got to see 2 of them. This place is so majestic & a fun fact is some scenes to the movie twilight were filmed here. The park is so clean too. We had an amazing time, I can't wait to book another visit & explore the rest of the waterfalls. read more

Have done this hike (the trail of 10 falls) 2-3 times in the past and I would say it's my favorite hike in the country! I love that it's only moderately challenging but high reward, with 7 waterfalls if you do the 5 mile version or 10 waterfalls if you do the full 7-8 miles. Pros: - An extremely well kept state park, and way better than some national parks! - Very easy $5 parking - about 1 hr 15 min drive south of Portland, pretty accessible - Great food shop and gift shop at the beginning/end of the loop for when you're hungry after the hike. Surprisingly the food also isn't TOO overpriced, actually decently tasting, and comes out pretty quickly. - lots of reward no matter how much of the loop you do! I love that there's very easy spots you can turn around since it's a loop hike - Really so majestic and just very PNW vibes. - A lot of variability in the waterfalls - some are small (especially in summer) but some are huge. Great for photos! Can't wait to come back :) read more
Silver Falls State Park! I mean, this is just an incredible visit, an unforgettable way to discover some of the best waterfalls in the United States! It's that good! Silver Falls is located 55 miles south of Portland, Oregon. It's very accessible to reach and I'd advise to arrive first thing in the morning before the crowds show up. It says the park opens at 7am, but you can begin exploring as early as first light of sunrise. I arrived on a Sunday morning back in the middle of July at 7am. I parked at the North Falls Parking Lot and got a spot immediately. It's $5 entrance fee per person and you pay at a metered machine. During my visit, the payment kiosks were covered up for 7am so there was no way to pay. I did leave a $5 bill inside my front windshield as an act of good faith since the meters were not in use. Later I spoke with a park ranger who said sometimes they get a late start opening the park and I can always make a payment before leaving. For here at Silver Falls, basically, you can hike the Trail of Ten Waterfalls. This is the trail that everyone hikes along. It's 8.7 miles roundtrip in length and covers or shall I say walks past 10 waterfalls among the charming Oregon forest. This Trail of Ten Falls is comprised of 2 smaller hikes that when paired together, will give you the 8.7 miles covering everything. Keep an eye on the lookout for the Canyon Trail and the Rim Trail. From the North Falls Parking Lot, I'd suggest starting with the Canyon Trail and eventually down the way, you'll confront the Rim Trail for making one gigantic circle. Btw...these 8.7 miles are not strenuous or elevated. It's along flat ground and perfect for everyone. Now...for the middle of July, you won't get to witness 10 waterfalls. I'd say 3 - 4 of them were all dried up and not even flowing. And another 3 or so waterfalls were not even worthwhile. But...there's (in my opinion) 4 waterfalls to uncover and I'd say at least 3 of them will leave you with goosebumps! They will make you emotional and take your adventurous energy to new heights! I'll name all 4... - North Falls - 136 feet and it's here where if you plug "Silver Falls State Park" into Google Maps, you'll find adequate parking for an early weekend day in July. Then this North Falls will stun you with jaw dropping scenery! - Upper North Falls - this is the one waterfall not situated along the Trail of Ten Falls. It's off to the side of the North Falls Parking Lot. Maybe the walk to it is 1/3rd of a mile long. When you arrive at this Upper North Falls, it's not as striking as some of the best here, but there's room to go swimming if you choose and it's easily photographable for quality family moments. I actually completed this Upper North Falls at the end of my explorations before leaving for the day. - Lower South Falls - continuing along the Trail of Ten Falls and you won't miss this majestic waterfall. It was my 2nd favorite in the park and is sort of the appetizer/introduction to the upcoming "Main Event" waterfall... Lower South Falls is amazing in that you can walk underneath it and capture some awesome, awesome views behind the massive power of this waterfall. It's magical and not even the best one in the park! - South Falls - 177 feet straight plunge into the abyss (or pool, lol). This is it! This South Falls is the "Poster Child" of Silver Falls State Park. It's what everyone comes for. It's the heart and soul of the 8.7 mile hike to arrive here. This waterfall is next level! I'd put it or rank it in my Top 10 Best Waterfalls Ever! There are so many different angles and glances to take pictures from and immerse yourself in the apex of nature's beauty! I was hooked on this South Falls. I couldn't take my eyes off it and felt bliss by the views circling around it. All my best photos and videos came here. What else can I say? South Falls will leave you speechless! Right near South Falls is the Nature Store where you can purchase gifts and souvenirs from your time at Silver Falls. They are open 10am - 6pm daily during summers. Finally taking the Rim Trail back towards the North Falls Parking Lot, you won't encounter much other than walking through the woods. That's why I believe leaving the Upper North Waterfall for last will end your time at the park on a memorable note. In total, all you need to conquer Silver Falls is this - Trail of Ten Falls hike - and it can be accomplished in 3 - 4 hours unless you really take your time, stop for a midday picnic and or gush in awe at some of the spots like North Falls, Lower South Falls and the de facto South Falls. For half a day visit, Silver Falls State Park will have you feeling thoroughly content and motivated to check out more waterfalls throughout Oregon! read more

Activity: hiking & waterfalls Pros: the views were beautiful and gorgeous. The hike to view the waterfalls was not relatively easy. You do need good good hiking boots. Some People had sandals I know their feet was hurting! Theres also opportunities for you to actually go down into the waterfall which is really cool. Cons: The sign says no dogs and clearly people brought them but I thought it was cool to see them. read more
Silver Falls State Park is an awesome park to hike in! It is known for the 10 different waterfalls in their loop. Do the whole loop! It's worth it. The trail is relatively flat, with some small inclines, but I would say this trail is friendly for most people including children and families. The views are gorgeous. I recommend starting on the south side and ending on the north falls side. Once you are done hiking, you can hit up the cafe for some lunch. They have a nice menu with a variety of items. The items remind of a summer lunch at home, made by your mother or grandma. A nice BLT, nothing fancy with a side of chips. The food was good, and overall, we had a fantastic day in the park! read more

Absolutely gorgeous. We did the Maple Ridge Loop Hike, which gives a great experience of two waterfalls. I am still recovering from a knee surgery, so I was not up for the full 10 mile loop. I brought my brother who was visiting from Houston and thoroughly enjoyed the PNW beauty and climate. We came around 10am on a weekday, and it wasn't too busy. There is a cafe that serves some food, and a cute gift shop. The bathrooms were in excellent condition, as were the trails. read more
$5 for parking Worth every penny! There are 10 beautiful waterfalls and tons of mini waterfalls along the way. It's super easy to navigate and well marked! I would HIGHLY recommend you wear hiking shoes. I went in April 2023 and there were tons of muddy patches. If you don't have hiking shoes I wouldn't wear brand new shoes because it'll get super dirty and muddy! :) Trail took me about 5 hours to complete. Stopped along the way and took so many photos! It's a giant loop. It sounds long, but I promise you the time flies by because there is soooo much to see!!! However if you have bad knees or you don't have time... you can definitely just complete one or two waterfalls. The trail is not handicap accessible or stroller accessible. There are parts of the trail where you would have to climb up and down the stairs. The trail is truly magical! It is definitely worth a visit! This was my second time completing this trail and I can't wait to come back again! It's that good!!! Cell phone service was almost nonexistent. I got some cellular service when I got closer to the parking lot. I would take photos of the map. Bring plenty of water and snacks. There are free public restrooms available at the main parking lot. Super cute place To have a picnic if you prepare a lunch. There is a restaurant/cafe, but I didn't visit it while I was there. There are no other fast food or restaurants along the way so plan accordingly. read more
Wow, wow, WOW! I am kicking myself for taking so long to get to this state park. If you want to hike the entire Trail of Ten Falls it's a 7.2-mile loop, or they have shorter sections & loops if you don't have as much time or energy. There's a nice restroom facility at the South Day-Use parking and s smaller restroom at the North Day-Use parking. There aren't other restrooms along the trail, so plan accordingly. Single day parking is $5 or you can buy an annual Oregon State Park Pass, which is currently around $30 or the year. The trails are well-maintained and relatively easy, with a few inclines & steep parts here and there, without many roots or rocks to look out for. If you have someone with limited mobility, or are just short on time, the South Falls is not very far from the South Day-Use parking lot, and it's worth a visit just for that alone (check map for details & distance to determine if it will work for you if you have someone with limited mobility in your group). You can walk behind at least 3 of the waterfalls, which is absolutely marvelous! (including the South Falls closest to the South parking) You will get a bit misty if you walk behind the falls, but it's not bad. And there are all large waterfalls, too! This place gets busy & parking fills up in the Summer months. There was some picnic tables near the parking areas and they also have a cafe (I don't think it's open year-round, check website for details), at least one lodge and camping. read more
A definite must for waterfall seekers or anyone who loves a good hike. We've been before but just took the Winter Falls Loop for the first time. You'll miss a couple falls, but 7 is a pretty decent accomplishment in 5 miles. This loop isn't hard, not a lot of incline at all. There were muddy spots, and standing water behind Lower South Falls. Each of the 7 are unique, and spaced out enough during the loop to keep even the impatient happy. We finished up by catching a quick lunch at the cafe, a nice ending to our hike. We arrived at the park around 9:30 to a fairly empty lot, which had filled up significantly when we left just past noon. Definitely arrive early to avoid the trail traffic, which is light this time of year anyway. A fabulous park full of lovely trails and trees, let alone the spectacular falls. Highly recommend! read more

There is a campground across from the state park, but no camping in the park itself
Can I do it if I am pregnant or is it steep or slippery?

I think Silver Falls is the better option for overnight camping or RV trailering. For a day trip, it's a toss-up but I'd still choose Silver Falls because it's not as crowded.

Are people able to jump off any of the waterfalls into the water below?
That is clearly discouraged by Park Rangers. South Falls is a 177-ft drop and I absolutely would discourage any leap like that. It is my understanding that no jump off any of the waterfalls will be tolerated without consequence.
