True Confession: I made a secret promise to myself this year that I was going to stop being a prude and have more experiences! I'm going to go hiking in the mountains (I'm not outdoorsy at all), travel to foreign countries, and simply experience more NEW things! Well a gay strip club is certainly something I've never experienced so thank you Portland and dear co-workers for helping me check off a few things from my bucket list. I wasn't sure what to expect considering it was a Monday and AMATEUR night, but I was actually surprised that the Silverado was fairly clean and low key. We ordered a round of drinks from the half naked bartenders and waited for the show to start. The music blared as we hung out with our cocktails and although it wasn't very busy, there were a decent number of people in the room. One thing to note is that there's absolutely no photography, no screaming, and no bachelorette parties allowed. I found this to be extremely interesting because this obviously changes the entire energy of the evening. The bartender, who also happened to be the emcee, announced the contestants for the evening and ten man-boys paraded out onto the stage half dressed in jeans and underwear. Most of them looked liked teenagers and that made the entire situation oddly uncomfortable. Sad to say I personally wasn't impressed and decided that it was time to turn in for the night. Frankly, I was disappointed. I'm not sure what I was expecting and maybe it was a slow night (Thursday) but there wasn't a whole lot going on. I'm used to straight strip bars where glowering men stare at naked women with bouncers ready to crack some heads if anyone gets out of line. Larry Miller once compared a guy at a strip bar to a leopard casing a herd of gazelles. Then there's the Chippendale's experience, which is like Gulliver in Lilliput. The guys have to be muscle bound to tear themselves free of the grasps of dozens of middle aged housewives. I guess I expected something in between. This was more like strippers as smooth jazz. That is, it's in the background and people mostly don't pay attention. Occasionally someone would go up and a stripper would come to the front of the stage and money would go into fancy skivvies. A petting zoo! That's what it reminded me of. With penises instead of animals and dollar bills instead of carrots. Thursdays are "Thirsty Thursdays", $2 cover, $2 wells. What's there to say? Guys in manties (and sometimes less) shakin' their booty for your pleasure. Many are good looking, most at least have quite decent bodies. It's very much a gay bar but as a straight woman I've never had any problems in there. Know that you are not their number one priority, and all will be ok. Be polite, tip, don't act like a novice at a bachelorette party, and I'm sure you will be able to make friends and have a great time. They also have a bar in a second room if you want to get a little less penis with your drink. There's still usually a guy dancing there, but only one as opposed to 3 or 4. I've always had a great time here, but go with good friends and an open mind. I'm not much of a strip club person (straight strip clubs filled with girls who do the "stripper walk" around the stage and expect to get tipped for just having an uncovered vagina) but these boys will dance, they'll show off their muscles, even do tricks upon occasion. Five stars for a gay strip club? Ha! Ha! Ha! All will come together by the end of the review. Steve and I have a policy that while we are monogamous and married and will remain so it is ok to look at hotties and comment on how they look but touching is not allowed! I find the Silverado a bar that offers something that the many, many gay bars I have been to that the others don't. Good old fashioned stripping or thereabouts. I remember my first 'strip club' was a dive called The Brig in Denver. At first I thought the dancers were strippers but they really weren't. They came out scantily clad and danced and went back scantily clad. The Brig was not good as getting as attractive dancers as The Silverado. After a couple visits there and seeing friends and going on trips to Chicago, Houston, Kansas City, MO and Boston I just did not come across strippers instead of go go boys which is actually what those characters were at The Brig. Some of these guys at The Silverado would tease with quick views of full frontal nudity which as far as I was concerned made them strippers at that point. Other dancers here seemed liked go go boys too. It was quite apparent that several of these guys were straight that were dancing and I think many of the patrons knew that but that did not stop them from getting free drinks by patrons and getting felt up when they were not dancing. Those dancers were probably so drunk by the end of the night that they probably had a hangover for a week. Some of our bonafide strippers knew the art of teasing. Others seem to perform strange gymnastics on stage and others just shook their booty. While I maybe terribly naive coming from the states of Wyoming and Colorado there may be plenty of more clubs like this out there. When visiting, even if your friends are gay it does not normally dawn on them to take you to a full frontal strip bar when you are going about town. But I am not so sure it is just that either. Seattle has no such bars. The alcohol board in Washington does not approve the selling of alcohol in gay strip clubs. In the past gay strip clubs tried to open in Seattle without the alcohol and nearly all of those establishments were short lived. People suggest up here that if you are looking for such a club you should go to The Silverado in Portland. Even after examining other reviews for the bar many reviewers mention that there are no such bars in San Francisco either. Probably the best chance you could see such things but feel the risk of being intimidated or even threatened would be to go to gay bathouses in the big cities. There is a element of danger in those places since I had a friend that got raped in one. Definitely not something for Steven and myself to get mixed up with. So that kind of makes The Silverado a special place, being the only bonafide strip club either of us have been to without getting too creeped out. P.S. The drag queens that showed up the night we went looked fantastic! Especially the zombiesque looking ones. Whether that was their intention or not I do not know. read more

What's not to love? Dive bar! Cute dancers! Men certainly have it good because they sure don't do the stunts and acrobatics that women have to, but then again, maybe they have stunt night. Haha! I'm only giving it three because I'm going to start by saying that this isn't the place for everybody. Seriously. It's smoky, it's divey, you're gonna see a lot of things you wish you didn't, and I'm not just talking about on stage. There aren't separate bathrooms, so if you're a lady, and you're shy, stay clear of this place. Many times they're out of TP as well as paper towels in the bathroom. Bring your Purell! Also, this is a GAY mens bar, so be respectful of that. The guys are up there dancing for free, so if you plan to gawk, get out your dollars and show some appreciation. This new location is cleaner, but for me, just doesn't have the same feel that the old place had. I feel sad whenever I'm at Jake's and look at the old building. I think I will always miss it. That's just the way it goes. Phew! Now that I have that out of the way, this is one of my regular places. I know. I'm a girl and all, but I've been coming here for 11 years with my boys, that's quite a testament. We have a great time! we love it! This place takes drinking to a whole other level. It's amazing what those cheap drinks can do to you. Also, the dancers are a mixed bag. You will see some you like, and some you don't. It's a matter of taste. Just keep the drinks going and you won't even notice after a while if you don't like it, lol. They are leery of female patrons, since it is a gay establishment, so keep that in mind ladies and you should be fine. Stan, the tall MC with a shaved head and glasses is hilarious. He really throws some zingers out there. Iran is great as MC AND performer. DJ Snow is up stairs mixing the tunes. The bartenders are all good, and can mix a stiff (I know) drink, no pun intended. Sundays they have beer bust. One dollar beer all evening. Thirsty Thursdays are a steal at $1.75 for well drinks. They are doing some new numbers with new choreography, so if you haven't been for a while, take another look. Last but not least, bring cash. They don't take cards, but do have an ATM. I am mixed from my experience, but for different reasons. Allow me to list and explain: Pro v. Con Pro 1) Hot naked men parading about and wiggling their butts around, I was surprised to find out from several that they are in fact straight or bisexual, which means the chance is there! Con 1) Several people making barfing noises when I slid my dollar into the underpants.. come on people, straight women should be allowed to enjoy the goods too! Pro 2) Drinks are surprisingly strong, and *okay* with price. The "real man" is deliciously fun. Con 2) Weird drunk people that wander in and actually try to converse with me... really? I am not able to talk when there is a penis swinging around on stage and some guys starts doing upside-down one-handed push ups while staring out at the stage. Pro 3) Often, there are people who hang out who will literally give you dollars and ask you to go up and give it to the strippers, I don't know why, but this happened all night while I was there. Con 3) The dancing isn't really dancing... so much as swinging and posing, and then bending over and spreading butt cheeks. It works for the general crowd I assume.. but hairy manbutt isn't my idea of sexy nor delicious... ick. Conclusion: I wish there was a place with the idea of Silverado's but that would have the same sexuality as a female strip joint- meaning, talented dancers who could actually give lap dances to both male and females. p.s. The bar tenders are great and friendly, we loved the nachos. but... the door staff was HORRIBLE. How can I paint this picture... So we had a party of close to 10 people enjoying drinks and food, and two of us step out to drop off some items at the car. We come back and are asked to pay cover. Speechless yet? We hadn't even paid our check, and our entire party was still inside the bar in the middle of their meal. Needless to say we explained our situation and yet the blank mindless stare of the self important mini me bouncer produced no comprehension of the situation. We even asked the members of our table to escort us back in. At that point, mr earphones bouncer man decided to give the entire party a hard time and tried to boot us all out. I used to come here all the time when I was single and always loved it! Now I don't get to come so often but when I do I'm reminded of crazy awesome times. The bartenders all have rockin' bodies! They poor stif drinks for minimal cash. Silverado - not the place you want to start your night but for sure where you want to finish it! The strippers are ok. Some better than others. But there is a little of each flavor (bear, twink, gym bunnies) and to each his own. Sunday is by far the best day! Mostly locals (out of towners on the weekends) and drink specials. Go! Church of Poison Waters... A great drag queen! I think it's a regular bar 9am-9pm 7 days with $2 wells this whole time. If you go before 9 on a non-Sunday you'll be disappointed. My friends and I are frequenters of the boy bars in Montreal which are a bit infamous for their "back rooms," so I was mildly titillated to learn that the laws in Oregon are such that full frontal male nudity is allowed in bars here. I managed to persuade a female friend (though really it didn't require that much arm-pulling) to come with me, and we actually had quite a good time. First of all, this was hardly the dumpy dive that I was expecting based on some of the other reviews here. The place is dark, it's true, perhaps a touch shabby, and certainly lacking any sort of expensive furniture or finishes, but it's clean and well-maintained--I've been in far, far worse places. I was particularly tickled by how enthusiastically it had been decorated for Halloween, which shows that the owners/managers do care what it looks like. The dancers are on stage two at a time, with one additional fellow in a little cage thingy in the back. All of them are super friendly, though most seem to be straight, but I suppose you have to have a certain level of self-confidence in order to not mind being pawed by pervy gays like me. There are a couple of drawbacks. There is a cover charge at the door, photos are strictly prohibited (though I did manage to sneak an iPhone video of the go-go boy in the back... shh, don't tell!), and drinks are cash only. There is an ATM machine available, though, so... that's something, at least. Overall we had a great time and I'd love to come back! read more

Throughout the lands of the Pacific Northwest and especially in the smaller gay bars there are stories of a fabled location in Portland that has so much more than drinks... it has STRIPPERS, and not just your run of the mill kind, but the FULL MONTY kind! That fabled place is The Silverado! What can I say? I love this place. I feel totally trashy when I leave after hours of watching naked men and "boys" parade around showing me the entirety of their bodies for a few dollars, but I can't help but enjoy myself! Washington, The Nanny State, just won't let me have this kind of fun! Of note --- in the last three years, I've noticed that A LOT more women have discovered this place. Straight women BEWARE: They do not like us here. The problems started at the door, when three guys had to review my ID before they'd let me in. The bouncer threatened to not let us back in because we responded to the homeless kid who said something funny when we were outside the doors (what he said was not in any way related to the bar or it's patrons. He just made a funny comment). They were digging for any reason to throw us out of there. We were even told by a few of the straight dancers that they could get fired for talking with us so they had to keep moving. I don't get it, I LOVE gay guys! We were not drunk or loud or obnoxious. I was spending as much as any other person in there... what gives? The patrons were all super nice to us, but the staff would obviously much rather we weren't there. Thank you trusty yelp app for locating The Silverado Bar. If you're looking for a divey gay bar in the middle of Portland, this is your place. Our bartender wore a beard and little else. The $2 wells during happy hour were pretty much all booze (no complaints there), and they even had $4 mimosas. All the patrons were super nice, and even for it being the middle of the afternoon on a Saturday this place wasn't empty. Silverado recently moved to a new location. I never went to the old venue, but I checked out the new one recently with some friends. The bar is really big: one giant room with a mezzanine, and another couple of small rooms. It was a Monday night when I went, and they had karaoke night. It was pleasantly crowded for a Monday (in fact, quite a bit more crowded that most NYC bars on Monday...), and we all had a good time. I'm guess it's yet more happening on weekend nights. The drinks are reasonably priced and they have a generous pour. I'm not too sure about the 4th of July theme they had when we went: the whole place was entirely covered with American flags... it was almost creepy. read more

Pros: - Hawt, muscular, young men getting undressed on stage. Always two strippers on the main stage and one in the back. They have around 60 strippers total, with about 12 in rotation on any given evening. Most are in their early 20s. We talked to most, and on the night we were there we found that about half of them were straight. - Bar tenders walk around in their underwear too, which I especially appreciated since I found one of them more attractive than the strippers (probably because he's a little older). - $1 Jello Shots! - Everyone was super friendly, from the bar tenders and bouncers to the strippers. I saw that some other women had negative experiences here, but maybe that's more of a matter of groups of bachelorettes or something coming in, I was the only girl in my group. I certainly had a very positive experience. Everyone was respectful, kind and friendly to me. I never went up to the stage to talk to the strippers, I'd rather stay a little more low key since I'm not the intended audience for this bar, but many of the strippers would stop for a moment, acknowledge me, say hi, put a hand on my arm, etc. (well, at least the straight ones did haha). They did that to many people, nothing special, but I just mean to say that I in no way felt ignored or unwelcome, quite the opposite! - The strippers aren't supposed to be completely naked, but they have plenty of freedom to cross the lines now and then. They have different outfits and underwear for each hour or so that they re-appear on stage, to keep things fresh and new. - The strippers welcome people coming up to the stage. You'll usually get a hug or a kiss and a moment to talk to them. They're happy to answer your questions. None of them seem to mind being touched. I didn't try it myself, but enjoyed watching my friend molest all his favorite strippers haha. - Silverado's makes a concerted effort to get strippers that appeal to different people. Very masculine, very effeminate, straight, gay, blond, dark, hispanic, etc. Cons: - Cash only - Very limited seating, more limited than I expected. - They do lap dances, but they involve no additional nudity. There's no "back room". - This is really just a personal preference, but for my taste the strippers were all a little bit on the young side. Every single one we asked was between 20 and 25. Also, most were muscular but very thin. They really meet the stereotypical gay male aesthetic of thin, young, muscular abs, and hairless. I would love to see more strippers in their 30s or even early 40s, maybe built a little bit bigger too, less boyish. I know they try to appeal to many different types, but this was a distinct gap in their range. - I've often heard people say stripping is "degrading to women". Can't say I ever felt the same way until I saw male strippers... hmm... I know most are just doing it for a few months or years, to pay off loans or save up some money, but it did feel a little bit sad to see men pimp off their bodies like this. (I keep accidentally thinking that this place is called Desperado's) Oh well. They're here by choice, and they seem to enjoy the job. That's the important part. In short: I had a much more positive experience than some of the other women describe here on Yelp. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, and the strippers were diverse, polite, attractive, and could keep up a decent conversation too! I would go back here again. read more

Muscle-guy strippers with a few spindly-cute twinks thrown in for good measure, all of them inked. No shortage of cock, unless the stripper's straight and totally uncomfortable being there. Proliferation of boa-adorned and feather-festooned drag queens, pretty boy jocks, lumberjacks, leatherdaddies, and tittering bachelorettes. Gay-cliche techno and disco balls. SIlverado is a gay bar that features male strippers who are not shy about showing all of their goods. If anything, they suffer from being too popular on busy nights, as droves of wedding party women flock in and elbow the gay regulars out of their way. Their food is not good, but their bar service is great. The decor is non-existant, but you probably don't go there to look at the walls anyway.... ;) If you can avoid it, don't use the bathrooms in the front.... use the ones behind the dance stage. they are cleaner. In the same town that has more adult video stores per capita than any other city in the world including Vegas and Amsterdam; one must remember the great time they had here with the genuine smile that no one could fake sliced their face from ear to ear at the sight of Portland's little hotties dancing around nervously up on stage to ear numbing, excessively loud thudding beats that would benefit everyone to be just slightly lower. And how can anyone deny the uniqueness of Mondays "Amateur Night" which showcases anyone who dares sign up. While asking "Blade" - a homeless skater who without the drudges of his vices could probably be a million dollar model - about the ins and outs of working amateur nights here, "I, personally, have a good time when I work Monday nights here. Not only do I get to be off the streets for a few hours and indoors if it's cold or raining." Just then, from behind him pops up a fellow patron and stuffed a dollar bill down the front of his bikini shorts. "And you get to meet alot of nice people." He continued. Definitely a Portland original. This is not your Chippendale's by far. A must see for anyone in the gay scene or it's enthusiasts. read more

A gay bar like no other. Not your average stip club. Go here after 9pm for great scenery :)

I love them because they always play Nicki Minaj and I'm her biggest fan ! But besides playing Nicki they actually play good club music, the drinks are cheap and good, the staff is nice. Great place read more

It was Thursday evening, or was it Wednesday?, bascially it was one of those weekdays when things weren't popping. Still it wasn't so bad for the night we came in. My friend and I just got done having ice cream and eating at the food carts so it just made sense to go in for some drinks. We saw the sign for silverado's and went in. My friend went there before . She looked around and was confused because she remembered it looked differently and the guy a the bar was like, you probably have the wrong place you are at a gay bar haha. The customers who looked at us probably thought we were lost too, but I knew in my friends mind she was thinking Where are those "dancers" haha. Turns out we were still early for all that, but on the plus side they had great drink specials! Down side they only took cash, so we ended up getting one drink each and then headed out to find the nearest atm. Then we got to go into the actual stage area. People were friendly, prices were great. We even got a picture since we were early, but once the dancers come on stage picture-taking isn't allowed. Got some jello shots for cheap and yea, just a good night. As far as dancers go. We are in our mid twenties and the guys seemed a bit older and just not to our liking. Either they are old, have tattoos or whatever, we weren't too impressed. We did however did like this one dude that was dancing in the bar area when we first walked in. He was our type, the rest no so much haha. Still it made for a great time. Not so bad for a weekday night. read more
