Disappointing beyond belief! We're a maintained middle aged couple; not high maintenance and have joyfully experienced many Eagle type bars around the country. After repeated visits this summer, we're not be returning and here's why. DJ's are totally out of touch; music sucks! Small oddly configured dance floor area with very few people ever dancing. No gogo's/dancers/strippers. Lack of staff; two bartenders on prime nights with lines 20 deep? Not the frisky environment that you'd associate with an Eagle. Clientele generally not friendly nor looking to meet new people. Inside is hot and stuffy. A lot of overly effeminate guys, actual females & unidentifiable genders. We want to support it but every time we leave disappointed; no more. read more

Really long lines and it appears that Rico the bartender either lets his friends cut line or doesn't have the balls to do his job and tell the customer(s) they need to go to the end of the line; which makes it take even longer. And when I said something about it I get yelled at. He told me to shut up! The guy that was cutting said he was just closing out his tab. I was standing in line to close out my tab and there were many people behind me....that the Bartender didn't seem to care one way or the other about. And he started teasing me about, "oh you have to wait a little longer." I was not the only one having to wait longer there's a lot of people behind me that we're going to have to wait longer because of him allowing people to cut line. Don't attend if you're disabled, diabetic, etc.. I have a lot of stuff I have to carry with me due to disabilities of mine (diabetes, fibromyalgia, etc..) as well as my mom's belongings after she was admitted to a psychiatric hospital. Got kicked out for it before I could even pay cover charge. Way to welcome a young gay man wanting to relax and meet people. I'm going to pursue remediation cause it's medical discrimination. Let's start with this. I love the Eagle and really like the people that work there. Dan is a great boss, takes care of his employees and really tries to make going to the Eagle fun with lots of regular events. Recently, I decided to go to one of the underwear nights and really get my groove on. The music was great, DJ really knew what he was doing. I decided to dance near the DJ Booth under the speakers. Well, the DJ didn't seem to like that as I turned around while dancing and noticed him making fun of me - mimicking me. That killed my vibe so I just left. The Eagle really isn't the best place to dance anyway. But I am disappointed that an otherwise awesome DJ turned out to be an asshole. I guess Badlands is where I'll need to go to get my groove on in this town - or just wait for a dance party. Still love the Eagle - just not for dancing. read more

Such a great space. Was in from out of town and walked in not knowing anyone. Had a ton of folks making eye contact yet no one really said hi. Wasn't until I made the first move to say hi to a group and I made some friends that night. The drinks were strong yet some of the bartenders give a lot of issues when ordering for a group. (More then 2 drinks at a time) With that being the only negative I would very much go back. Also I thought it was very cool That they had one sight rapid HIV tests. Last night I went to this amazing gay bar, and honestly, it was one of the best nights I've had in ages. The energy was electric -- everyone was so open, welcoming, and just there to have a good time. The music was nonstop bangers, the drinks were strong but delicious, and the drag performances absolutely slayed. What I loved most was how easy it was to just be -- no judgment, just joy. On the northern outskirts of Portland, Eagle reminds me of the Hole In the Wall Saloon in San Francisco...not so much for the bizarre, surrealistic, Churrigueresque alternate reality, but for the really laid back, laissez faire attitude permeating both. I remember seeing a gentleman totally bareass naked at the Hole, and that didn't surprise me since San Francisco hosts the Bay to Breakers Run where groups of people can run without a stitch of clothing. We went on a Wednesday afternoon, saw a sign at the front door stating, "Do not enter if you are offended by nudity. We are a proudly Gay Bar." Well, to me this felt like Oregon balls out where people feel they have the right to do whatever they want as long as they don't directly hurt anyone. Hear! Hear! And right on cue when we entered, there was a gentleman from San Diego who was walking around nekkid as a jaybird and appeared right happy strutting about the bar & small, pleasant back patio which sported a large mirror which, I assume, is used for "wardrobe adjustments". There are even cubby hole lockers provided for people to stow their clothes as long as they bring your own lock. Full bar, plus good local micro brewery craft beers on tap. Since we didn't go at peak night time, weekend hours, I can't vouch for the clientele, but our furry, Smokey the Bear type Beared Bartender was helpful & friendly. It's a dive, which to me makes it even more appealing. It's the only Bear-Leather-Levi-Fetish cruise bar in all of Portland since the Eagle PDX is long gone so it deserves a 4 Yelp rating. PS The cute puddy cat is a roamer so you won't see her all the time. Also, she apparently comes on really friendly, but pet her for a while, and she turns paranoid and bites hard as related by a local patron who had put his hand too long on that furry, wild pussy. read more

I stumbled upon this bar not knowing a difference between anything here or anything. People are nice, but especially nice here. When it finally (I'm the last one to know,!) downed on me where I was at and then I started to gay-math and I was oh my g-damn! I'm probably somewhere where I wouldn't normally choose. Now, such kind people and I was just this close to karaoke. Thats's how cools the gents are. I wouldn't ever give a a glance. Never. NEVER! But a friendlier, nicer set of men, you'd be hard pressed to find. And I was way out of my element, not at all knowing where I was or anything like that. I'm a truck driver from Oakland and was stuck on an layover in Portland Dec 27-Jan 3. I'm a bit of an introvert, have never gone to a bar by myself, but was so bored and lonely that I decided to give the Eagle a shot. Went there three times and each time found the staff and fellow patrons to be friendly and welcoming. Went there on a Sunday afternoon and they were doing a bbq, giving away hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad etc for free. Yes there is such thing as a free lunch! The drinks were well made and fairly priced. It has a comfortable dive bar feel with a back patio and pool table. My only caution is to not go there if you're bothered by gay porn, because that's what's playing in the monitors. I'm looking forward to my next Portland layover so I can hang out at the Eagle. read more

AVOID! Even if you have grey hair, they make you turn over your driver's license to scan. They keep your name, address and birthdate on file. It's a violation of privacy. They told me they were required to scan the drivers's license by law. That is a lie. They are stealing your data. When I said they were welcome to look at my license, they told me to leave. This is a perfect bar for guys who identify as bears, chubs, Chasers, leather, etc. They have a lot of themed events but you are not required to dress them. You can go in jeans and t shirt. Everyone is very nice. Bartenders constantly make sure your drinking needs are met. They do play X rated movies so if that bothers you then this may not be the place for you. I had to check out Portland Eagle on my way to a great restaurant by the airport. They are literally on the same street so I stopped in. Earlier a gay friend of mine who I have known for 30 + years told me about it. Another told me to stay away so for $10 I checked it out. Outside the front door was the senior manager. He oversees 4 or 5 of the properties owned by the same guy. I had a good conversation with him about his duties and the various businesses he works at and future expansion plans as well as overall business plan changes. He has his act together. Not only was he on spot when it came to know what he was doing he also had a good sense of humor as well. This morning he was bartending as he opened. After he finished his smoke we both went into the place. It was about 3:00 PM on a Sat afternoon. There were two patrons in the place. One was at the bar on his laptop the other was outside on the deck somewhere. They have a great selection of beers. I chose one then looked around the place. Lots of gay porn-as expected-and fairly excellent quality. Certainly, the production quality was excellent. Then I walked out on the deck and saw the other patron. He was butt naked with a ring in every conceivable place, and then some for sure! He had rainbow colored hair and immediately was reminded of the joke about the old sailor on leave in Hong Kong... Despite appearances he was a fairly friendly guy. Then another patron or two stopped in. One went to the bathroom...screaming...like a syphilis infected pain while urinating...one of the more bizarre things I have experienced. The manager did not blink an eye. When the guy was done he left. No purchase, just a scream, a pee and he left! Even for a straight guy this could be a fun bar, but definitely on the cutting edge! I have nothing bad to say about the place and can only imagine how lively it gets at night, but this place is obviously not for the weak... I used to live in Portland when all the gay bars were down on "Vaseline Alley" (aka, SW Stark Street). Since the scourge known as the "Pearl District" has jumped Burnside and spread to the now former gay ghetto, most of the action has been established in either Old Town, Downtown or elsewhere. There was a different Eagle that was formerly located in Vaseline Alley -- it closed, and the owner of this bar assumed the Eagle name for his bar in North Portland. The Eagle is Portland's only gay leather/levi bar, but it's a good one, by God! Thursday nights is "naked pool night", but I was there on a Saturday night and saw some penis. Lot's of draft beers that would make any bear happy, and a full bar with any booze you choose. Also, check out the vending machine.....need some smokes? They sell cigarettes at the vending machine. Snacks? check. How about a bottle of poppers, lube or even a DILDO!? Yup, you can get all of those at the vending machine! Also: nice partially-enclosed back patio for all you smokers, complete with a flat screen TV playing hard core porn. Hmm what I can say. It's not like there are overwhelming options as far as bear-bars go. I seem to have good luck meeting new people here, and usually find someone attractive to cuddle with. Maybe not the best place to go if you are trying to find someone special, 'cause the vibe is hyper-sexual with porn grinding away on 10 different screens throughout the place. If you can manage to endure the aggressive groping, you still might find a meaningful date or 2 with a little time and effort, I know I have. I like the atmosphere(aside from being blasted with porn.) The lighting and the ambiance is comfortable and inviting, and usually not too loud to have a nice conversation. Being the only real bear-bar in Portland, it's a great place to go if you like fuzzy man creatures. It is positively packed with bears, cubs and their admirers on the weekends. There are themed and rotating events here nearly every day, and I have to say these are a stroke of genius that continuously attracts a varied crowd of fuzzy men for different reasons. On the not awesome side. At some time, some years ago, they quit serving good cocktails. No longer is one allowed to purchase AMFs, Long Islands, or the like. I mean, how dare one try to get drunk at a bar!? Also, I'm 386 lbs, so that's just a nice way to start my evening adventures -- I am quite bitter about the absence of such beverages. You know you're going for the raunchy darkness so embrace it. The only thing that might be questionable for me are the drink specials. They just don't seem to measure up. That is, the "cost to play" doesn't equal the drink specials being very special. $1 off isn't my idea of a steal of a deal. But still, you can get your drink on pretty well here. I like that there is a front bar and a back patio bar. Plenty of room for all things naughty. There are options to play some classic bar games like billiards and darts. It's got an old and cozy wood feel to it. No doubt in my mind - I would go back again. If visiting Portland or just in the mood to walk on the wild side, this is a good place to go. read more

Going to the Eagle Portland is like scraping the bird poop off your car, and then having the feeling like it's really never going to be clean again. It's like a bunch of hippies all vomited up a campground and added flat screen bareback porn for amusement, but even the adult entertainment was a little too aggressive. The help actually seemed friendly. There's a full bar, but there seems like little else to do. It's completely unsanitary, and I wouldn't touch a buffet item on a club/event night even if they paid me. I also expect a "leather" or "eagle" bar to be sexy, provocative and intriguing. This Eagle had none of those qualities, and seeing naked guys twirl around the bar only adds to the unsavory aspects that I have previously mentioned. This is clearly a hole. The Eagle Portland is the best gay bar in Portland. Within a couple blocks of I-15 and on the Yellow MAX line, it is readily accessible. Unlike other Eagle bars in the country, this one has no dress code and is casual and friendly. There are good events on weekends and regular events nearly every night. Favorites are Undergear (3rd Saturdays, where you can get it without a cover charge by getting down to your undies--or less--at the clothes check provided), Bear it All (1st Saturdays, sponsored by the Oregon Bears, again with a clothes check), and LURE (Leather, Uniform, Rubber, Etc., 4th Saturdays, the monthly fetish party. It is a gross dive, lots of poker machines, beer advertisements, filthy appearance, smelly bathroom, etc. The bar selection is pretty weak too, but they have a dark beer on tap, so I am set. That said, it is really the only gay bar of it's kind (does not idealize youth) in Portland currently, and I find myself there week after week, if only for woof and potential hookup factor. This place can be either a ton of fun or really just a drag. It all depends on the vibe. Their events often bring out literally droves of people, crammed into the relatively-small space. That can be a lot of fun, though. Their patio is pretty nice, although the recent expansion/remodel is more than a little obvious as a means of building "quiet corners" for more intimate encounters (which do occur there now and then). The biggest problem with this place is that the staff can easily get overwhelmed by the crowds, resulting in ridiculous lines to get another beer. Unnecessarily long. One other note: They don't take cards, and the ATM machine in the bar is frequently out of order. Make sure you have some cash when you show up. Another annoying quality: think twice on hot nights whether you're up for going, because the folks that hang out here sometimes seem to be less eager to put on some Right Guard in the morning... which makes for an unexpectedly fragrant night out. And enough with the name changes already: you should have stayed "Porky's". Changing it to "Urge" was just ridiculous, as was the name-grabbing stunt that ultimately yielded "Eagle". So, lots of people I know just wrap them all into one and affectionately call it "Purgle". read more
