    Cinnamon bun, tuna sandwich

Simon's Place is sort of a second incarnation of the much-loved Marks Bros cafe which used to operate a little further down George's St in the 80's and 90's. See this Irish Times article for a bit of that history: https://www.irishtimes.com/news/simon-s-back-1.128155 . Simon's food remains the best cafe fare in Dublin, in my opinion - fresh, delicious, and outstanding value. I highly recommend the sandwiches - on huge slabs of super-fresh half-wheat bread, generously packed with various fillings, lettuce, tomato slices, and cucumber - unchanged since Marks Bros days. The cinnamon buns are also stupendously delicious - soft and buttery, generously flavored with cinnamon, and with a delicious sticky caramelized base. This is food of uncompromising quality, made with love. To top it all, prices are very reasonable - my sandwich and bun cost me only 9 euros, which is a bargain for such good food.

With just a few small tables and chairs outside, the standing room only interior is a picture of economy. These were my first impressions as customers steadily streamed inside to place orders and then leave to wait for their sandwich or sit a bit. My eyes locked into the pastrami melt sandwich on the menu and I waited my turn, albeit a bit nervously, to place my order with one of the three gents who were slinging the sandwiches. All the ingredients in the deli case looked fresh, from the lettuce, meats, cheese, etc, to the types of bead on top of the case, like the focaccia. Each sandwich is made fresh, and once assembled, is pressed to warm the roll and melt the cheese. My pastrami melt arrived loaded with the meat, and all the ingredients enhanced by the deli mustard made for a great tasting sandwich. It's probably the best pastrami sandwich I've tasted in a long while. Every employee was patient and helpful, and I found this to be quite an effort since customers kept placing orders without much of a break. The Pig & Heifer is definitely worth a repeat visit.

Outside was as mess, there were no chairs at some tables and other had to many with dirty dishes on them. So we decided to go in. There was no hostess nor any wait staff so we stood there like stooges. Finally ,two of the wait staff walked right by and just ignored us so we decided to take a seat. Now they want to come talk to us! I asked if this seat was ok and got the reply "I guess it will have to be as you already sat down". Should have got up then but the wife was tired so decided to stay. It was crazy warm in there with little air flow. I liked the atmosphere and ambience. Guess they wanted to make a point as we sat there for 15 mins without water or anybody coming by. Had to flag down what appeared to be a bus boy to get water. Finally had order taken by male bus boy who seemed he wanted to be anywhere else and said "I am waiting". We ordered two "specials" and the bœuf bourguignon. Two separate couples came in and were served before we received our food. So hard to eat as it was 80-85 degrees in there. The beef was good and would recommend. The two specials were chicken and very very dry. To wrap it up we had to hunt down the wait staff to get the ticket as they actively avoided eye contact. Fairly expensive for just ok food and horrible service. Customer service is not hard. A "Welcome" or "Glad you came in" goes a long way.
